NFL Random Thought of the Day

49ers MLB Reuben Foster was arrested Sunday morning in Santa Clara (CA) on charges "related to domestic violence," and for possessing an assault rifle.

He's being held on $75,000 bail, $50,000 for domestic violence and $25,000 for the assault weapon. It's Foster's second arrest in the last month; he was popped for marijuana possession in Alabama on January 12. Foster also failed a drug test at the 2017 Combine and was kicked out of the Combine after an altercation with a hospital employee. When healthy, Foster proved a difference-making run defender as a rookie. He now risks missing significant time due to a string of off-field incidents.

ESPN and FOX are supposedly trying to sign Peyton Manning as their prime time analyst..............such a waste.

I can see it as a part time gig until the right position becomes available. Manning’s mind shouldn’t be away from this game. Between the ears few, if any, have been better than Peyton.

It's been reported that Ex-Cowboy Greg Hardy won an MMA fight in 14.53 seconds. Looks like this sociopath has found his niche. The quick knockout, it should be mentioned was against an opponent half his size and strength.........but at least this time his helpless opponent was not a female. BTW, for those who may not know, he tried to return to the NFL by participating in the newly formed Spring League last year............didn't help his cause.

The Browns have $110 million in 2018 salary cap space...............and, if that wasn't enough, they hold the the 1st overall pick, the 4th overall pick, as well as picks No. 33, 35, 64 and 65. It would take even more incompetence than they've ever shown in the past to blow the offseason. With new management, hopefully the owner keeps his cotton pickin' hands off the process

Saints, Bills, Rams among NFL's 10 best offensive line units

The offensive line remains one of the most difficult aspects of football to evaluate. So much of what makes a blocking unit great is immeasurable, including chemistry, familiarity and cohesion. Even some of the most astute film-watching analysts would admit that they aren't always sure what to look for when tracking an individual lineman's success or failure.

Using the unique Next Gen Stats tracking data provided by the microchips in every player's shoulder pads, we're looking to take another step in evaluating the performance of the offensive line. The rankings for this list were created using a 1-32 listing of both pressures allowed (pass blocking) and average rushing yards gained before close (run blocking) for every team. The rankings were then finalized with the lowest composite score coming out ahead.

NOTES: Next Gen Stats defines a "pressure" as a pass-rushing play in which a defender gets within 2 yards of the opposing quarterback at the time of the throw or sack. Other outlets collect pressures using different methods, and these have value. What is and is not a pressure will always carry some level of debate, but NGS provides us a unique advantage in that the numbers rely not on the subjective eye test, but rather on objective results that are consistent across all plays.

"Yards gained before close" (YGBC) measures the amount of rushing yards a running back gains before opposing defenders come within 1 yard of the player. In addition to making sense intuitively, this metric correlates with other measures of run blocking success. The league average is 0.29 YGBC.

RANK

1

SAINTS

Pressures allowed: 137 (first). Average YGBC: 0.87 (first).

Score: 2.

The Saints led the NFL in yards per carry, as both of their outstanding running backs, Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara, took the league by storm. As is always the case, the backs got the credit, with both Ingram and Kamara making the initial Pro Bowl roster, while not a single offensive lineman got an initial nod. That was a miss by the voting collective. The Next Gen Stats data helps show that the front five was dominant. Saints running backs gained an average of 0.87 yards before defenders closed within 1 yard of them in 2017. New Orleans led the NFL in that category by a decent gap, with the second-place team (Buffalo Bills) checking in at 0.69. Additionally, the Saints gave up the fewest (137) total quarterback pressures this season, showing out as dominant producers in both phases of the game.

THE REST OF THE STORY

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Wondering how much validity this "pressure" definition holds. Can see some scenarios that would make it questionable.

Rae Carruth apologizes to family of woman he conspired to kill
Posted by Darin Gantt on February 19, 2018, 12:20 PM EST

Former Panthers first-round pick Rae Carruth, months away from his release from prison for conspiring to kill the mother of his son, sent an open letter to the child’s family apologizing for his role in the death of Cherica Adams.

Carruth was arrested in 1999, after he was charged with masterminding a plot to murder Adams. She was shot multiple times and died in the hospital, after giving birth to a son named Chancellor, who now suffers from cerebral palsy.

The boy is cared for by his grandmother Saundra Adams, and Carruth told WBTV that since she hasn’t returned messages he’s tried to relay to her while he’s in prison, he wanted to make his feelings public. He was convicted in 2001 of conspiracy to commit murder, and is schedule for release later this year.

“I feel like if I did it in the open, it would put an end to the lies. If I say publicly, ‘Ms. Adams, I apologize, Ms. Adams, I take responsibility for what happened,’ that she can no longer get on television and do an interview and say Rae has never apologized to me,” Carruth said.

He didn’t go into detail about his own role in the death of Cherica Adams, but took a measure of responsibility.

“I’m apologizing for the loss of her daughter. I’m apologizing for the impairment of my son,” Carruth said. “I feel responsible for everything that happened. And I just want her to know that truly I am sorry for everything, . . .

“If I could change anything, I’d change the whole situation. His mother would still be here and I wouldn’t be where I’m at. So that’s what I’d want to change. I want the incident to never have happened at all,” he said.

Carruth said he hoped to be able to be a father to his son once he’s out of prison, though he accepts that he’ll be a “social pariah.”

“I let him down as he came into this world and the only way that I can make that right and the only way I can work out my relationship with my son is to be there for him,” he said.

Whether that ever happens — or whether Chancellor’s family allows it — remains to be seen. But Carruth is clearly setting the stage for his release in October, and his first steps into freedom after nearly 20 years behind bars.

Report: Jonathan Martin taken into custody
Posted by Charean Williams on February 23, 2018, 3:36 PM EST

Authorities have taken former Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin into custody, Matt Stone of ABC News reports.

Martin’s former high school, Harvard-Westlake High School in California, closed for the day after it became aware of a social media post from Martin’s private Instagram account.

The post included the words, “When you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.” It had the hashtags #MiamiDolphins and #HarvardWestlake. It also included an image of a shotgun and shells.

Martin tagged Mike Pouncey and Richie Incognito in the post. He accused his former Dolphins teammates of bullying him when the three played together in Miami.

The Jags are reported as looking at the possibility of obtaining a FA QB. There may be a hooker in all this as far as releasing Bortles if they so choose.

Per PFT:
Bortles is under contract for 2018 at a fifth-year option amount of $19 million. The payment becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the league year. The sole caveat comes from wrist surgery Bortles had after the team’s playoff run ended. If he can’t pass a physical before March 14, he can’t be released before his salary (guaranteed for injury only for now) becomes fully guaranteed.

Police questioned Jonathan Martin, do not believe his school is threatened

Police questioned former Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin on Friday as he was seeking treatment at a hospital, and do not believe a chilling social media post from Martin represents a real threat to his high school.

Martin posted a picture of a gun, a message about getting revenge on bullies, and the names of his high school, the Miami Dolphins, two Dolphins teammates and two high school classmates. His high school closed for the day out of concern that it could be a threat about a school shooting.

“The individual believed to be responsible for the social media post is being detained, however he is not in police custody,” Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Tony Im told USA Today. “The investigation is continuing, but rest assured we believe there is no threat to any school in the LA area.”

Martin was reportedly at a Los Angeles-area hospital seeking treatment.

INDIANAPOLIS -- In the wake of a devastating spinal injury, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier won't play football next season.

Shazier has said he hopes to resume his career, but he's still not walking on his own after undergoing spinal stabilization surgery in December. He was shifted to an outpatient therapy program after being discharged from a rehabilitation center at the start of February.

"Ryan Shazier won't play in 2018," Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine. "He knows that and we know that. We're going to continue to support him in his recovery. So we know going into the season that he won't play. He'll go on a different type of list once we get the determination and once the league year starts, we'll figure out where he'll end up because we'll be at 89 players.

"Fortunately for Ryan, he's covered in that manner and he will be part of our team officially and really unofficially. He's still with us day to day as he rehabs. He involves himself with the team and in team issues and will be a formidable member in 2018." link

Hope is very important in recovery from such an injury. A touch of reality is just as important.

NFL competition committee overturns non catch calls stating should have been catches
I had always considered those plays to be great catches as soon as they happened. And it's still a catch today, and apparently, will be in the future. I never bought into the "but it's a non catch by rule." They were dumb rules to begin with. So I'm glad the NFL committee will finally change the definition of what is a catch.

Just sucks the Dez Bryant play came in a huge divisional round playoff game at Lambeau Field. It might have cost the Cowboys a trip to the NFC Championship game. They still had time to win that game and I don't want to make excuses, but that would have been a huge momentum swing for them.

It would have been cool to see a class act like Tony Romo play in an NFC Championship game and maybe the Super Bowl. His career never materialized like I thought it would due to injuries and some unfortunate bad luck.

Agreed 100% with what you said Bull the only question unanswered is does
Dallas go on to win that game? Personally, I say NO, idiotic "Cowboys fans"
will say yes

NCAA considers new rule to reduce kickoff returns, which will get the NFL’s attention
Posted by Michael David Smith PFT on March 3, 2018, 2:04 PM EST

The NFL has already followed the NCAA’s lead in changing a kickoff rule once, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it happen again.

The NCAA is currently exploring a rule change that would allow the receiving team to fair catch a kickoff inside the 25-yard line and have it treated as a touchback. The idea behind the rule is that it would reduce the number of kickoff returns, and therefore the number of collisions on kickoff returns, and therefore the number of injuries on kickoff returns.

It was college football that led the way on the rule that moved touchbacks on kickoffs out to the 25-yard line, rather than the 20-yard line. The NFL followed suit and adopted the 25-yard line rule.

If college football also adopts this new touchback rule, and it seems to work well, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the NFL do it as well. The NFL has said that its injury data shows that kickoffs result in more head and neck injuries per play than any other play in football, and the league wants to reduce those injuries. Touchbacks aren’t as exciting as kickoff returns, so not all fans would be on board, but the league will surely keep an eye on this NCAA proposal.

Never thought I'd say it, but football is really starting to turn into a borefest. And with all the CTE mess and more and more parents keeping their kids out of football because of it, it's only going to get worse. This sport will be unrecognizable in 20 years.

What difference does it make now ? Lots of stuff changes going forward but not retroactively.
What is that play involving the old Oilers and their arch-rival Steelers, another pass reception in but in the EZ by an Oilers receiver which was ruled incomplete but was actually a compelsion and would have been reversed had there been replay back then ?
It happened before I arrived on the Houston scene but I hear old Oilers fans talk about it now and then.

'79 AFC Championship game. Mike Renfro, both feet in, control of the ball all the way to the ground, should have been a TD under any catch rule the NFL has had.

Still the worst call I've ever seen.

Steelers went on to win 27-13, but that would have tied it at 17 in the 4th quarter. Who knows how that would have effected the game from that point.

When the refs had their conference, they talked about if they would leave Pittsburgh alive if they ruled it a TD

Three years, $91 million fully guaranteed for Kirk Cousins is a stretch
March 7, 2018, 11:26 AM EST

With free agency a week away, it’s important to separate the wheat from the crap. And there’s one specific report that seems more like crap than wheat.

Via KFAN, former Washington tight end Chris Cooley (who now has a radio show in D.C.) says that an agent told Cooley the Vikings will offer quarterback Kirk Cousins a fully-guaranteed three-year, $91 million contract. I quickly dismissed it when Paul Allen of KFAN asked about it during a Tuesday chat on his weekday radio show. But given that it keeps popping up, the time is right to point out the flaws.

First, the Vikings seem to be very sensitive about the importance of keeping enough cash and cap space available to retain as many of their other great players as possible. Committing $91 million fully guaranteed over the next three years will complicate that objective, dramatically.

Second, the current high-water mark for quarterbacks sits at $27.5 million annually. $30.33 million per year would represent an implausible spike, skipping over a slower progression of $28 million, $28.5 million, $29 million, $29.5 million, and $30 million.

Third, if the $91 million will be fully guaranteed, the Vikings would have to put the bulk of that money in escrow right now. For that reason, most teams resist fully guaranteed payments beyond two years. Only one — the Dolphins — have fully guaranteed the first three years of a contract, giving Ndamukong Suh $60 million at signing to cover 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Fourth, if the Vikings were to offer that much over three years, the Vikings would surely want more years on the back end, both for cap purposes (allowing the signing bonus to be spread over a longer period of time) and to give the Vikings the opportunity to keep Cousins under contract longer, if they choose to keep him beyond the guaranteed years.

Fifth, given that the Vikings have a better team than the Jets, the Vikings should be able to get Cousins for less than what the Jets would pay. And the Jets surely aren’t willing to fork over $91 million over three years, either.

While Cousins will indeed get paid, it would be a surprise if he hits an average of $30 million per year. If would be a shock if he gets to $30.33 million per year, fully guaranteed, on a contract that covers only three years.

If the Vikings sign Cousins, they will be in no position to franchise tag Keenum or Bridgewater....they can only hope that one would be willing to sign and be a backup for the duration of Cousins time in Minnesota.

If I were Gaine and O'Brien, a contract to Keenum would be expedited in the hopes he would like to return home with a better than expected contract to wear a cap on Sunday's...I mean be a tremendous insurance policy in the event Watson were to go down. I'd also be fine with the continued development of Heinicke as QB3 under this scenario. I wonder if Keenum would have any interest in returning to Houston?

Damn! The trade market is picking up...Rams traded LB Alec Ogletree to Giants for two (4th and 6th round), 2018 picks. The Rams are players

Bucs re-signed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

It's a one-year contract. 35-year-old Fitzpatrick made six appearances, including three starts, in place of Jameis Winston last season. Always a bit overextended as a starter, Fitz is one of the league's top backups.
