**Official Game-Day Thread** Texans at Saints, Saturday August 26, 2017!!

Mancz subbed for XSF on the 2nd series & played the rest of the way with the "1st team." X came back in with the second team & had some pretty bad moments.

Fuller played RG for a series or two & made Allen look like our best option at RG.

Time to trade with the Pats for an OL or 2.

Offense was absent again. Might have been a good game to show up to uplift the mood at home with a win. :D

I don't know.

They shift formation and the ball goes to the most obvious guy. They try to be tricky after a shift and they look like they haven't practice the play at all. TBH this look like the same game plan we took against the Patriots in the playoffs last year.

Only we have worst O-line this year.

I think OB needs to take a page out of Lombardi's handbook... if you can do one thing better than anyone else....

Find one play that works and go with it... everything else will follow along

Even then it would be a monumental accomplishment with an OL as "challenged" as ours.

No QB could have done much against that Saints defense. Those mothers came to play.

Two shutouts for us in a row, last week vs. Chargers before this one. There is more confidence among fellow Saints fans re: this defense than one in a long, long time. The injury to Nick Fairley was significant, but the front 7 looks very different from last year - the CB depth is lacking, with Breaux hurt our CBs will be tested. But we've got a couple of young players in the defensive backfield who really seem to be strong, in Lattimore and Williams

With this much youth, I expect growing pains. But they did come to play tonight.

I am writing this season off, let Watson sit behind Savage until he gets hurt. I don't give up on him yet. It ia a shame that we are wasting the best years of our defense. It is beginning to look like we will have one or the other. We will always be a mid tier team for a long time in the future. Sad but true. Bob has run out of excuses and needs to go after this season. It is going to be a pathetic offense this year. DHop has absolutely no reason to stick around.

Addressing only your last sentence, Hopkins should play well looking for a contract..somewhere.

O'Brien has failed to learn since Game 1 of year 1 in Houston that O-linemen need to settle in and develop chemistry. He brought from New England this dogma that he can move linemen around and expect them to still function optimally. It doesn't work that way. Let people learn their position, or remain ideological as your offense fails to function. If the line continues to suck this season, he needs to go. He should have learned his lessons already.

Oh but it doesn't matter Brisco because two time divisional champion or some ****, Brisco.

I didn't watch the game tonight but I will Monday. Sounds like we sucked. I have to imagine the weather in Houston is mentally affecting the team. I would be more focused on my family then a stupid pre season game.

The offense regressed big time from last week.

Not like there's any news here. O'Brien sucks. We need an offensive coordinator with imagination and touch. Savage looked better than last week, but he's a slow motion QB. I swear every play took ages to get off. But--the good news--seems like his accuracy on most not long passes is pretty good. The offensive line is well-named. The D did not look frightening (to competitors). Watson looks like he's going to be good, eventually. Lots of advantages with him on broken plays. Accuracy improving some. This was the worst Texans game this off-season I think, though I don't really remember the other two. But this was really kind of terrible, beyond terrible, stinking up the joint, to put a point on it. I put it at O'Brien's feet. He's gotta coach better. Maybe he should retire? Injured reserve? Nevermind. We'll all watch them anyway and maybe they'll look OK sometimes. By mid-season it'll be Watson running things and that might help, just because he'll run around and sling the ball to people and . . . oh, never mind.

Rick has to go too.

He and Bill agreed on all the offensive moves.
Smith did okay getting the defensive guys to make it top ten.
if your head offensive "chef" can't cook up a good offense (like the defensive chef did) do you blame the delivery boy or the cook?

Well, if our GM is just the delivery guy, which I think he is, even more reason he should be gone. Our GM should do more than just sign off on anything the coach wants.

He didn't stop the Osweiler contract and trading away all these picks for mediocre offensive players or dismantling the good OL Kubiak had. He's part of the problem.

Just remember, O'Brien got full control of the final 53 as part of his contract. Apparently, zone blocking OL guys weren't part of his grand plan. I just can't see how a screw up GM can only screw up one side of the ball. And then there's the little matter of some of our OLinemen being snapped up by other teams after our coaches let them walk.

He does, whatever McNair wants him to do he does, to McNair's great satisfaction.

It was simple tonight...the OL dictated what the offense could do tonight. Oh, that was nothing!!! I'm going to properly put this disaster of an OL at the feet of the individual who should 100% bear the blame...please stand up RS and tell the folks how it was so important to make a move up and draft a QB who was going to sit for 2017 versus addressing the biggest need, getting an OL that could not only protect the QB under center but allow this offense to operate with some type of confidence.

:goodpost:

I know we've been talking about it for years, but it's still too early this season to start talking about chopping heads. We don't know how things are going to go. It doesn't look good, I admit.

But if nothing else, the coaches got a clearer picture of what they have to work with last night. It's on them to win with what they got. If O'Brien does that, ain't nobody going nowhere.

NEW ORLEANS -- Jadeveon Clowney rejoined J.J. Watt on the field Saturday night against the New Orleans Saints as the Texans' ultra-dangerous pass-rushing tandem got their final work of the preseason.

It didn't last long as the Texans' Pro Bowl bookends only made a cameo appearance in the third preseason game.

Clowney and Watt played just four snaps before leaving the game, their work done for the night. Neither defensive standout registered any defensive statistics against the Saints.

In limited action, Clowney got eluded by speedy Saints wide receiver Ted Ginnon on an end around that was called back due to a block in the back. Clowney missed the Texans' preseason game against the New England Patriots, returning to practice Thursday after dealing with leg soreness for roughly two weeks.

Watt donned a baseball cap on the sidelines, his preseason over since starters don't traditionally play in the fourth and final preseason game.

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year emerged unscathed from the preseason having made a sound recovery from a pair of microdiscetomy surgeries last year to repair a herniated disk. link

Another fluff media piece. Neither looked good last night. Watt missed the RB and seemed to be taken out of the plays he was in. Same with Clowney.

Was it 2015 when OB/RC held most of the star defensive players out of any extended preseason play and the defense started out very slow?

Texans' offensive line porous in preseason loss to Saints
By Aaron Wilson

August 26, 2017 Updated: August 27, 2017 1:56am

EW ORLEANS – Sheldon Rankins busted up the middle with a classic rip move, slamming his right arm underneath the left armpit of Texans right offensive guard Jeff Allen to create strong leverage.

The New Orleans Saints' 6-2, 305-pound defensive tackle outmuscled Allen to penetrate the backfield and slammed running back Tyler Ervin to the turf for a loss of three yards.

It was emblematic of an extremely rough night for the Texans' offensive line Saturday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, regressing markedly in pass protection and as run blockers during a 13-0 shutout loss.

Texans starting quarterback Tom Savage wasn't sacked, but was under plenty of duress. He had little time to pick out his targets as he completed 10 of 16 passes for 79 yards.

And the running game grinded to a halt as the Texans gained only 34 yards on the ground in the first half on 10 carries as a shorthanded group of running backs didn't have adequate holes to run through.

There were far too many penalties as the Texans' offense looked somewhat disorganized at times, including one for having 12 men in the huddle. It was a rough game generally for the entire offense.

"Obviously not good," Texans tight end Ryan Griffin said. "You don't put any points on the board. We were sloppy, too many penalties. It wasn't a good night for us. Anytime we take the field we want to perform well and we didn't do that.

"Whether it's the first preseason game or the fourth, we got to pick it up. The regular season is around the corner. So, we got to pick it up soon. We've got to be more focused. We'll get it going."

For the game, the Texans allowed four sacks and nine quarterback hits. They rushed for just 57 yards on 21 carries, an average of 2.7 yards per run.

"We shot ourselves in the foot," Allen said. "We had a lot of penalties. Anytime we had a positive play, it would be a negative one with a holding or formation or something self-inflicted. Obviously, you have to get it fixed. We'll look at the film. We have to hold each other accountable. We have to do our jobs. Those things shouldn't happen."
THE REST OF THE STORY

That was his first year, 2014. Not many starters played on either side of the ball & it showed when the regular season started. That was a major change though, new "systems" & "schemes" on both sides of the ball & a lot of new folks as well. Shouldn't hurt us so bad this year as most of the team are at least two years into what we're doing.

Smith did okay getting the defensive guys to make it top ten.

2006 core defensive players before Smith took the reign:
Mario (1), Weaver (a former 2nd rounder), Demeco (2) Greenwood (3rd), Dunta (1), Babin (1).
That was a good core to build around.

Ụnder Smith:
Okoye (1) Failed.
Bennett (4), Harrison (5), both Fs.
Molden (3) F,
Adibi (4) average.
Barber (6) nobody.
Cushing (1), not up to draft status.
Barwin (2) not bad, but gone
Quin (4) good, but was replaced by Ed Reed. Bad move.
McCain (6) OK for his draft position.
Jackson (1) unspectacular, a B.
Mitchell (3), average at best
Sharpton (4), average.
McManis (5), nobody.
Watt (1) , great, but more like a Wade's pick.
Reeds (2), not bad, but gone.
Harris (2) F
Carmichael (4), F
Kéo (5) OK, but gone
Merciless (1) Good, but now somewhat expensive.
Crick (4), not bad for his draft slot, but now gone. ( could sign for cheap)
DJS (2), headcase, Failed.
Montgomery (3), gone
T Williams (4) nobody
C Jones (6) PS player
Clowney (1), McNair's boy, and an obvious pick.
Nix (3) Gone
Pagan (6) jury still out
Kevin J (1) average at best for his spot.
McKinney (2) good downhill, suspect in coverage
Client (6) jury still out
Covington (6) not bad for his spot, jury still out for long term.
Dillon (5) Reader (5) jury still out

I don't see much result overall pertaining to Smith, do you?

Dud of a football game. At this point you have to hope O'Brien Is just not showing his hand. You have to hope that all the creative, and we'll timed playcalling is being reserved for the regular season.

Offense sucks. If the New Orleans defense smacked you around like that it's gonna be a long year. Got overly confident going against NE 3Rd stringers and a vanilla gameplan.

Deshaun just wasn't giving up on throwing that pick damn. Last night was an example on when to use your legs more. The online was getting driven back 2-3 yards routinely. 4 man pass rushing was creating pressure. Really inexcusable things happening up front.

It's funny how the Saints media is reporting how great their Dline performed and how well Brees was protected. Their D looked so good because our OL looked like crap. Their protection was so good because our D has such a pass rush. It's evident by both the local media that perspective/reporting is what you want it to be.

This picture exemplifies the great protection that was afforded.

For those who wanted Ryan Ramczyk. If you remember, I tried to discourage this pick because of his never ending history of injuries. Well, the reason he didn't play Saturday was because he sustained an undisclosed injury early during the Saints-Texans practice.

Not on Ramczyk bandwagon but those who were alert and in tune enough to know, this OL was desperately lacking NFL talent. Which makes turning a deaf ear to Brown all that more frustrating.

Really love game and upside Cunningham brings to LB position. Remember Texans traded up for McKinney just two drafts ago so Rick must feel this position (was) bigger need to fill than OL.

Having said that, Dion Dawkins would have been a more immediate, impactful need position selection. He can play OG but was projected RT by many. Now he has been asked to start @ LT for the Bills. Not because of LT holdout but injury.

Not that any of us could foresee Duane Browns holdout, but more his retirement and future replacement. Bookends of Dawkins and Davenport would have had a nice ring to it.

If Rick is nothing more than a delivery boy and had no intellectual capital than he needs to go.
