Rumor + Pancake.McClain mentioned it on the radio when we were about to sign Hoyer.
Rumor is he wanted Jimmy G and Ricky outsmarted himself.
Rumor was Bill O'Brien thought Brian Hoyer could lead a team to the Super Bowl.

To me, it doesn't really matter who it comes from. An unsubstantiated rumor is an unsubstantiated rumor. If someone wants to keep brining up a "rumor" that O'Brien wanted Garropolo I'll remind him that O'Brien wanted Hoyer too.
Hoyer was meant to be a placeholder even if Jimmy G was drafted by the Texans.

They did not bring Hoyer in to be a placeholder. Stop pushing that silly narrative when you know darn well he was brought here to compete for the starting QB job.
That doesn't make sense, we already had two placeholders.
The starting QB as Mallett/Savage gained experience.
You know, kinda like BOB's doing with Watson.
I take that back, you dont know.
OB's statements on Hoyer before he was ever a Texan say your conjecture is wrong.
Link?
You really believe BOB thought Hoyer was the longterm answer at QB? Hoyer was just a JAG until he could find his QB.
SMH

The link and quotes are here in this MB several times. Not doing gopher work for you.
Yeah I believe that. Ooh a Belichick chosen and trained QB who just hadn't gotten a real chance. No reason to dump Fitz otherwise - serious flaw in your stack of guesses.
And this whole Garoppolo mythology you have created out of nothing. Texans most surely could have traded their 2017 1st for him. But they didn't. The obsession is yours, not theirs.
I can't imagine BOB stating Hoyer was capable of winning a SB. His actions certainly spoke differently. If he truly believed Hoyer was capable of winning a SB I don't believe he would have pulled him as quickly as he did.
IMHO, he viewed Hoyer as a better fit for his system than Fitzpatrick, given his time in NE.

The story, per McClain, O'Brien was being interviewed by another team for their HC position. They brought up their QB issues, not being able to find a guy to provide stability for their team & grow with. O'Brien suggested they go after Brian Hoyer, who was the backup in NE when he was the OC. He said, paraphrased by McClain, a "winner" who just needed a chance.
This was before Penn State, before Hoyer went to Pittsburgh, then Arizona, then Cleveland.
We got Hoyer after Garapolo was already drafted by NE. Doesn't make sense to bring a bridge QB in the year after you draft a QB, or the year after you didn't get your QB.
At the very least, had we drafted Garoppolo at the top of the 2nd, he'd have been competing with Fitz for the staring job. We wouldn't bring in a bridge QB for more money than Fitzpatrick was making.
I think O'Brien learned Hoyer was ruined between the time he left NE & the time he came to Houston.
I think there's quite a bit of difference between someone being called a "winner" that just needs a chance vs saying a guy can lead a team to a super bowl.
O'Brien is on record saying it was a quarterback competition. Are you calling him a liar Steelbtexan?
Nope
Doesn't mean Hoyer wasn't a bridge and not a longterm answer at QB.
The Pats wouldn't take Cleveland's first for him, why would they take the Texans?
Assuming Glaser correct (and he was talking after the draft so future instead of current pick) up the ante. There isn't even rumor the Texans made a serious run at Garoppolo.
Fire him. Now.
We are on our way.Not going to happen
Ricky McNair is family.
Best thing that could happen to the Texans org is back to back 2-14's. Then and only then we might see change.
I've said this a number of times. All you have to do is look at the numbers.
Smith has been GM since 2007. He has the following results:
82-79 Regular Season record
4 Division Championships
3-4 Playoff Record
0 Appearances in Conference Championship games
The 0 appearances in Conference Championship games really gets me. Maybe to some this is OK for a GM whose been on the job 10+ years. I'm not seeing it.
Good points.I would also add the number of QBs that have gone through here and the status of the o-line. RBs Miller and Blue have not been good.
If he is in charge of the players outside of deciding the final 53 (who the hell knows), wtf has he been adding to this team? Where is his responsibility?
He can't continue to say the coach tells me what to get and I go get. Not my fault.

Longest Tenured NFL GMs in NFL with their W/L records:
1. Jerry Jones - Dallas Cowboys (Owner, SB, QB) record doesn't matter, owner won't fire himself
2. Mike Brown - Cincinnati Bengals (Owner, QB) record doesn't matter owner won't fire himself
3. Bill Belichick - New England Patriots (SB, QB) 201-71
4. Mickey Loomis - New Orleans Saints (SB, QB) 129-111
5. Ozzie Newsome - Baltimore Ravens (SB, QB) 181-154
6. Ted Thompson - Green Bay Packers (SB, QB) 118-73-1
7. Rick Smith - Houston Texans () 88-88
SB = Super Bowl winner
QB = Had a franchise QB

No no no CND, that's not how you rate a GM. You have to look at his draft picks, and see how many games they started. It's a foolproof system of evaluation and assures us that Rick is a top 5 GM. Nevermind the reason that there are always multiple spots for subpar rookies to start games, all that matters is they started those games.
Sam Montgomery and Louis Nix III. And where the hell is Jeoffrey Pagan? Is he even playing football anymore? I know Nix and Montgomery are both out of the NFL, sitting on their couches. Along with Travardo Williams. DJ Swearinger is on his 4th team. Alan Bonner has yet to play a down in the NFL. Brenan Williams is a wrestler. That's all just 2 drafts, 2013 and 2014.

Doesn't matter if you fire BOB and Tricky Ricky is still the GM. As long as Rick has picked the players, the Texans have either suffered or been mediocre. It was that way for Kubiak, it has been that way for BOB, and it will be that way for Insert New Coach's Name Here.
- Who was it that let the best Texans OL go?
- Who was it that never drafted a development QB (that really had a chance of developing) behind Schaub?
- Who was it that passed on QB's to get Su'a Filo?
- Who is it that keeps drafting players that either are not healthy or need a minimum of a year on the bench before starting? How many Texans picks in the first three rounds have made an IMPACT their first year - compare this to other teams picks.
GM's like Rick Smith claim they pick the best player available. Unfortunately, the McNairs picked the first available Denver assistant GM that still needed to learn a LOT about player evaluation and selection. There is apparently a lot more to managing the Texan's roster than $$$ that Rick simply has not learned, despite having 10 years of unwavering support .
Does not make him a bad person, just makes him a flawed GM that will only hold the Texans back. Like a QB that cannot learn to read a defense, a GM in charge of player acquisition that fails to get it right needs to go. Fire Rick Smith, he needs to go.
What's worse is the number of drafts picks they traded away to move up to collect this heap of garbage.Sam Montgomery and Louis Nix III. And where the hell is Jeoffrey Pagan?
