Texans Training Camp 2016

Yes.

Kickers are fickle beast though.

At this point I'd go with Novak. Not in love with him but that rookie could be spraying balls all over the place.

I will take the rookie, he has a leg on him and he will improve.

Fairbairn 3-6 pulled two left one to the right. Novak 5-6 left it short on 50 yard attempt but hit 55

That's the first time I've seen anything negative about Fairbairn. Until now I thought he had the inside track to the Kicker job, especially after he nailed that 45 yarder in the game against SF. The only thing I thought was a negative, and it was a negative for both Kickers, was the Kickoffs. Neither one really put it out of the endzone that I recall and most seem to come up short of the endzone.

He has missed quite a few FG's in TC... and I think they are wanting them to kick short of the endzone because of the new rule

Re. Martin's ankle/foot injury:
"I don't think it's serious," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "It's not a knee, so I think he'll be all right."

What kind of sound logic is that? Don't expect Martin to be out there Sunday

Yup, plus the new kickoff rule actually helps the weaker Novak.

Not really. He needs to get more air under it... more hang time. If he's going to kick it short, our guys need more time to get down field.

Interesting...Vrabel was the DC preseason week 1.

I was wondering why they never showed or mentioned Romeo. Vrabel is going to be a DC somewhere next year. Betcha

I believe he has already turned down one DC job offer since being here memory is hazy on that will look it up later.

Your right but I forget which team offered it to him

I would love to see him as our next DC...........Romeo is going to have to retire before too long. Imagine how big he'll get when he's not walking the sidelines. He'll pass Vince's butt up! Haha

I think you'll find he'll be the Texans DC next year. I feel he has a promise in place and that's what is keeping him here.

Tbh, I can't see that....the promise being in place....

If he wasn't interested, then why take interviews? And OB could bottom out and get fired.

I think if the right situation comes along, if he's not been promoted, he's gone.

Hasn’t been said enough. Lamar Miller is having a good camp. Don’t give him daylight, he will find it and go. Saints found out today

Also, Osweiler is getting comfortable with Miller in the passing game and figuring out linebackers have no chance in coverage.

Scarlett has not played one season since the beginning of HS through college without his season being cut short by injury, except for last year. He was signed by the Texans as an OLB, despite the fact that he has never played with his hand in the dirt.
perhaps Texans think he got injuries out of his system or "shook them off"? I would put either of the Millers against LBs every chance I got. Having Fuller, Strong and Hopkins on field also makes me smile...

That could be a big advantage Texans if BO learns his height could be difference maker when that back comes outta the backfield.

34 observations from Texans-Saints joint practice
Posted 4 hours ago

John Harris Texans Analyst

The Saints came marching in on Thursday and that’s... yes, I know that was cheesy. I’m sorry, but it’s that time in training camp when I’m ready for September 11th to get here, if you catch my drift. Regardless of my Groundhog Day implications, the Texans got plenty of work done against Drew Brees and company on Thursday morning.

Here are my observations.

1. One of my favorite things during these joint practices is seeing the players congregate afterward to see who knows who, figuring out how they know each other. I’m struck by this every Sunday during the regular season when I see players, coaches and staff meet, hug and laugh with those they know from the other team. Coach O’Brien made his way over to chat with Saints linebacker Michael Mauti before the practice started. Coach has said numerous times how valuable Mauti and his Penn State senior class was to that program when he coached there. The Ohio State guys all got together to talk after the workout.
Eddie Pleasant went looking for his Oregon peeps on the sideline after the workout. Stephen Anderson waited after to see his former Cal teammate and The Woodlands resident Daniel Lasco, a rookie running back for the Saints. I always say that there’s a definite brotherhood in this game and then I see those reunions. It does nothing but confirm that feeling.

2. The first joint drill was between the Saints tight ends and the Texans outside linebackers in a run blocking drill. Two years ago, the Texans might’ve struggled in that drill, still acclimating to what linebackers coach Mike Vrabel truly wanted from them. But, after two plus seasons of coaching and seasoning, the Texans outside guys didn’t budge.

3. The first rep I saw was Whitney Mercilus against former Colts tight end Coby Fleener. Whitney has improved immensely against the run and maintaining the edge. He can hold it down and showed Fleener exactly how it was done.

4. Jadeveon Clowney, seeing the first action against a different colored jersey since December 2015, held up the same way as Mercilus and it didn’t even appear as if he had to exert too much energy to do so against a Saints tight end.

5. Speaking of outside linebackers, rookie Brennan Scarlett made his debut today after missing the first few weeks with an injury. He looked sharp throughout the practice. I wrote his name in my notes a couple of times. He’s an interesting story, having played for both Cal and Stanford during his career. As a frame of reference, that’s like playing for Texas and Texas A&M. Either way, he missed all of 2014 with a knee injury, graduated from Cal and then became the first ever graduate transfer to play ball at Stanford. He’s attempting to turn himself into an outside linebacker after playing a ton on the interior at Stanford, but he showed some pass rush ability and toughness throughout the workout. He’s definitely going to be a player to watch on Saturday night (No. 57).

6. During a 1-on-1 period with the Saints wide receivers versus Texans defensive backs, Kareem Jackson faced off with hulking Brandon Coleman, one of the biggest receivers in the league, and came away with a pass breakup to start the drill.

7. Safety Corey Moore was matched against tight end Coby Fleener and after the rep was over, I heard a couple of coaches lauding Moore for his tight coverage of the former Colts pass catcher. Why? Moore was in Fleener’s hip pocket the entire way. The former Georgia Bulldog safety has quietly done excellent work in this training camp and he played well out in Santa Clara last Sunday night versus the 49ers. Keep an eye on him on Saturday night.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Art Briles is not going to be the Texans head coach. Bill O'brien is. When RAC retires, there is a good chance that Vrable will be the DC of the Texans. He knows this defense inside and out. He knows how to use it aggressively. He'll be a great defensive coordinator. And he and O'brien are on the same page with the team. They could create incredibly aggressive game plans together. I think they'd be more "go for the throat" Then Belichick is. Never take that lead foot off the pedal. Get up on a team and never go vanilla or conservative. I'd love to see that from a Texans team. I always hated that "get ahead then take your foot off the pedal" mentality that Kubiak had.

Except 3-4 teams transitioning DEs to OLB obviously.

Yeah. Ok. He says we're trying a guy out at OLB who has never had his hand in the dirt. That should be fine. We're bringing in a real LB to play LB.

I'd be more worried about a guy who's never played standing up. Which, from what I gather, is what CnnD meant to say.

Thought he was an ILB transitioning to OLB. Hence why he's not been a hand in the dirt pass rusher??

You won't see them put it out of the end zone either. O'brien is trying to get the kickers to put it just shy of the end zone with high, directional kicks forcing a return. This will be emphasized with the kickers. Force a return and get the gunners down there to stop the return man inside of the 20. With the new rule, a touchback goes to the 25 automatically where the offense will start their drive.

I ******* hate the new rules.. they're taking the most exciting play in sports out of the game.
Brother, changing the rule could make it more exciting. Teams will be trying to get the kick offs in play, rather then kicking it deep into or out of the end zone, to force a return. Which would you prefer? The other team having to start their drive inside the 20 or at the 25?

Re. Martin's ankle/foot injury:

It's already reported that Martin's high ankle sprain may cause him to miss the season's opener, but the Chronicle is reporting that Martin will be replaced by Greg Mancz, who has been having an excellent camp. If Mancz continues to stay healthy, his signing last year as an UDFA will prove to be a gem.

The question is indeed, can his shoulder carry the heavy load required of a starter. He has only played sparsely in 3 regular games since his last major shoulder labrum surgery of Jan 2015.

Just to remind people of his shoulder injury history, from my May 4, 2015 post:

We've got a C that will squat high enough to save Mallet's back. I'm actually excited by his acquisition and hope he works out. But there can be no doubt that the shoulder is a major issue of concern. Not only did he undergo labrum repair surgery just this past mid January, and had repeated injuries to the shoulder in the past, but he has already undergone 2 previous additional surgeries to the shoulder prior to this one. The one good thing going for him is that he is an interior lineman, where as opposed to tackles, he does not usually have to leverage his opponents while his arm is outstretched to his side taking a lot of torque on that shoulder.
