What to do in 1st round?

Out of position for top 3 QB's, what should be 1st round strategy now?

I'd think long and hard about that one. If we didn't have as many holes to fill I'd be on board. But I really want a young QB, stud RB, and a speedy WR in this draft.

Yeah I figure we can get either Elliot or Henry in the first and then it's a crapshoot... may take some wheeling and dealing

Well maybe we could offer them a package of our 3 QBs. They did after all go 8-4 this year. That's a pretty incredible stat with this group that we have no matter who it was they beat. Obviously I'm joking, but the Saints have so many problems they're a long way away from being a contender again.

2nd and a fourth for Brees? Shhh..don't let other teams needing a QB find out cause they might offer the same

I would offer our first and fourth round pick to new Orleans for drew Brees .
SI is reporting that Sean Payton will be returning to New Orleans in 2016. Assuming this is true, I'd guess the probability of the Saints being willing to trade him is significantly reduced.

I thought it was the cap hit spreading the rumor of NO letting Brees go; coach leaving only made it more likely, coach staying signals little.

Well, if Brees is traded, he'd have to restructure - if not outright reduce his salary amount anywhere he goes. As it stands now, his cap hit for 2016 is $30 Million, and there's no team in the NFL who's going to take that on "as is". Perhaps even more importantly, I don't think the Saints and Payton are going to agree to anything that doesn't involve at least making an all-out effort to bring Brees back next season. And as far as the contract negotiations, given his relation with the city and with Payton, I've got to believe Brees would much prefer staying in New Orleans - even if it means getting a little less than he could somewhere else.

I hate you right now.

It's a combination of measurables and O'Brien's proven inclination for being biased. If we're picking in the 20's, he won't wait until the low 2nd round for his guy.

And if that Michigan TE is there in the 2nd, he'll snag him too.

You understand I consider 800m a close shot?

With the bow?

Jake Butt (Michigan TE) is returning for his senior year.

And that's good enough to be an automatic contender every year while you pick a young QB, wisely, to learn behind Brees. Hell, there's an outside chance he has more than that in the tank. He's still rockin' like he was 3-5 years ago.

This is what successful franchises do. Brees probably isn't going anywhere with Payton staying put.

I would do that in a heartbeat. Get an elite QB like Brees and this could be a Super Bowl caliber team. That's definitely worth a 2nd & 4th.

A Rick Smith 2nd and 4th for sure.

I would give up a 1st and 3rd because how would you feel about the Texans chances of winning Saturday if Brees was under center for the Texans?

Only if he's willing to restructure his contract

It aint my $$$$ and they would have the cap room after cutting Foster combined with the estimated 27 mil in cap space. Heck they could do a deal with cutting Graham's $$$$.

It was posted somewhere here that he is due $30million, that is just too much

I think that was probably me, and I just double-checked it. $30 Million is his cap hit next season not his base salary. It looks like his base and workout bonus would be $20 Million, so not as bad as my incorrect initial number looked.

A 30 million cap is is just not justifiable if it is even doable. Salary is ok...

IIRC, a new team only responsible for base ($19.75 m) rest of it remains with Saints. Of course, offering him a new adjusted deal he would accept for next 2-3 year. He turns 37 in 11 days.

Edit: info was already presented.

You know, I said (and still say) "Best Player Available" but I just can't quit thinking of what this team (even with its warts and Brian Hoyer at QB most of the time) would look like if we had vintage Arian Foster on the field or some current version of that guy.

A beast RB completely changes this teams game on offense. It's a crying shame we lost him so early and then lost him again.

I dunno. What does Brees know about this offense??

After a full season I can rest assure you he would be better than Hoyer. Weeden looked better than Hoyer after taking one snap in practice before the Indy game and with a full week of practice against the Tacks.

So you tell me how you think Brees would look? It's time for this franchise to start taking risks and if a QB of Brees abilities becomes available getting him should be a no brainer.

And Brees has come back saying he only wants to play for the Saints. How much of that will shake out in the off season, I don't know, but it would make sense for Brees to stay put.

Since NO is my 2nd fave team since 1983 or so, I guess I can always still root for them (unless they are playing the Texans).

I guess it then goes back to my original premise: draft a QB high, expect Savage to really compete, and hang on to Hoyer or Weeden for vet bench experience. I would expect Weeden, because he comes cheaper than Hoyer.

I never thought Brees was an option to begin with .... the Aints aint gonna take the cap hit for cutting or trading him .... just makes no sense and no team is going to pony up a pile of draft picks for a guy that age with that base salary.

As for the last paragraph .... I don't know what the hell they do in the draft. So many QB needy teams up top that there is no telling who's going to be left when the Texans get around to picking.

Goff should be gone by the second pick to Cleveland.
Paxton Lynch could go 3rd to SD as Rivers is aging or 7th to SF .....

Chicago , Philly , St Louis , Detroit and maybe even the Jets could be a landing spot for Connor Cook or Carson Wentz.

Taking Hackenberg , Prescott or C.Jones in the first and you leave better players on the board at other positions .... and those QB needy teams pick ahead of you in round two.

Hogan has fallen off the face of the earth among most scouts .... when they had him ranked fairly high this time last year. An option ??

I just don't know if they can draft a QB early unless they make a significant move up - at least to 14 ahead of STL where you'd be taking whoever is left among Cook & Wentz who had a pretty serious injury.

Best case .... one of Lynch or Goff falls like Rodgers did but I just don't see that happening with so many teams with a need at the position.

Worst case .... they bunt again and don't draft a QB at all .... we get Hoyer or someone similar.

Risks? Weren't you the one on your soapbox when they extended lis-franc Schaub?

And there's the rub, right? You cannot force a QB pick and you had better be damn sure that he's your guy if you trade up for one. Or, as you mentioned above, one falls into your lap like Rodgers did for GB.

Up until today I was harping on how poor of a decision OB made by not taking any of the more sexy QB names in his first draft. But then I realized, hey, what if Savage really and truly was the target, and OB believes in Savage more than anyone? Who are we to say any different? We haven't seen a body of work from Tom?

Were they protecting Savage by putting him on IR and not IR Designated to Return?

And why did Rick Smith contridict Bob McNair about not taking a QB in the draft? (There could be many reasons for this.)

The way I see it, they either expect Savage to start in 2016 or they already know he's a bust, and OB will have to eat that one.

Because the way I see it, if you give OB credit for anything, he has taken several trash QBs and made them serviceable. If he can't come anywhere close to that trick with Savage, then it's known for sure that the FO made a collosal mistake at QB in year-one, by drafting a QB high in year-three.

If they don't take a QB high in year-three then either a.) They've had a sneaky scheme with Savage, all along, or b.) They are the biggest dumbasses on the planet.

That's your nutshell.

Best player available, regardless of position should've been a choice. That's mine. If it's a position of need, then great. If it's a close call, take the best player at a position of need. Even if it's a kicker in the 1st round. HA!

No QB in 1st round. The best will be gone. Get Hack in the 2nd and build from there. Too many holes to fill.

Just a rough far outside view of the draft at this point......

I would be happy with Wentz at our pick.

I like Wentz .... but that injury is concerning. Wrist & hand injuries are a big deal for guys who handle the ball ... and no one will handle it more than a QB.

Is that you Al?

I'd have to get CND's opinion on it.

Pretty sad that I trust CND's thoughts on injuries more than I trust the team.
