The #Texans have agreed to terms with QB Ryan Mallett, source said. So itll be Hoyer & Mallett in Houston.

Ex-#Browns QB Brian Hoyer plans to sign a multi-year deal with the #Texans, likely three years, Im told. They plan to have Hoyer & Mallett
Maybe it'll happen this time
So, Mallett, Hoyer and Savage battling it out in camp? No QB in the draft... The good thing is, we save a lot of cap space by having a cheap QB by committee system... I don't know what to think, new probably didn't have another choice. I am still mad we didn't get bridgewater...
Yep, Rapoport is saying we got Mallett signed.
Hopefully Hoyer is just unnecessary insurance in case Mallett falls flat on his face.

NFL sources confirm Ryan Mallett has agreed to a contract with the Texans. It's a 2-year deal.
Hoyer's deal said to be three years.Tania Ganguli @taniaganguli · 4m 4 minutes ago
Ryan Mallett's deal with the #Texans is a 2 year deal worth $7 million. Expecting Hoyer's to be bigger.

As I reported yesterday, Texans have signed Ryan Mallett. Mallett left "significant" money on the table. Wanted to be back in Houston.
so I guess an open competition between mallett and hoyer for the starting job?

Mallett gets 1 year to prove he can be the franchise QB. Hoyer is just insurance in case Mallett sucks.

Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer will have an open QB competition to decide the starting QB. Both guys fully expect to win the job.
I'm expecting to hear Fitz traded to Jets soon. If that turns out to be correct, it will be interesting to see what they get for him.

So trading/releasing Fitz basically makes Mallett contract a SAVINGS. Unreal job. Credit to Rick Smith on this one. #Texans

The comparison should be among backups in which case they save $3.25 on Fitz and spend $4-4.3 on Hoyer. Not going to credit Smith for that (and doubt that was his call anyway).

Can confirm @caplannfl report that Brian Hoyer's camp is still expecting another call from the #Jets this morning.

Hoyer still waiting on another offer from Jets
Hoyer's deal said to be three years.
Will be interesting if they can trade him
But if Hoyer actually gets to compete and wins the starting job, then you are talking the Mallett contract as the comparison, which is better right?
And honestly, as far as I'm concerned they can have him. I'd rather roll into the season starting Mallet with Savage and Fitz (or even Savage and Keenum) backing him up than bring Hoyer here.
I've just never understood the appeal plus now he's got Cleveland Brown all over him. He tracks that **** into our locker room and who knows what could happen to our 2015 season!
I can just see the love Matrix is giving the Texans org this morning.
Looks like he may have to find another team to root for.
Wilfork you're up next, come on down.

Cognitive dissonance is making my head vibrate. So general board opinion is O'Brien is brilliant for getting Mallett but dumb for getting (if he does) Hoyer?
If that happens we may as well start talking about FA QBs and the draft next year.

And Fitzy > Hoyer?
I don't get it

Rivers and Rodgers were first round picks. Savage went much later.I'm still trying to figure out what's what.
I thought maybe Savage was part of the plan, but two years on the bench... I know Rivers sat three years & Rodgers sat three years, but they were both the #2 guy in their second year & waiting for an injury. Looks like we want to make sure Savage doesn't see the field & I don't get that.
I also don't get a 2 year deal with Mallett. Cheaper than I expected, sure. But all we've got is the franchise tag if he blows up, to keep him here, or leverage a long term deal. I suppose that's "normal" but I expected a built in team option so we're not paying Andy Dalton $100M three years from now.
If Hoyer grows a beard, I guess I could get behind him.

WTH? We're cutting AJ and Myers, then wasting $$$ on this guy? That would get a LB, or a FS, a lot of players. Stunned.Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
Brian Hoyer's contract is expected to be 3 years and in the range of $12-14 million. Getting more due to playing experience.
Please, make a better offer, Jets. Please.Hoyer still waiting on another offer from Jets

#Texans RT @AlbertBreer: Jets showed interest in Hoyer, but I'm told they're higher on \Fitzpatrick. fit w/Geno, cheaper, history w/Gailey.
Does that say "starter" to you? If you look at those numbers & think he's being brought in to compete with Manziel for the starting position, then expect Mallett's numbers to be higher.
If you look at those numbers & think, "Damn, Manziel got beat out of the starting job before FA even started." Then expect Mallett's numbers to be similar.
I think that's the low end of starter money. $5.25M guaranteed in year 1 with the possibility of making $7.25M... (I know it's a long shot for the Browns to make the play offs, so realistically may not be a word used here). But still...
I'm expecting Ryan Mallett to get somewhere around $6~$7M in year one. A prorated bonus of $5M/yr & a $2M salary or something like that.
I think I disagree, his two game resume doesn't garner "starters money," we'll have to have a gentleman's bet.
I just hope Savage gets a legitimate chance at the backup job. Hard for me to believe he won't be at least as good after another offseason and camp as Hoyer, and for less money.I sure hope Mallett pans out. Otherwise, it's another year down the drain
Mallett was always going to sign a very short 'prove it' deal. Don't know why this would surprise anyone.
To re-sign Mallett, 26, the Texans gradually increased their offer to the soon-to-be fifth-year QB, who had never started before 2014.
I'm grateful we were able to land both for what appears to be back up/prove it type contracts. I don't know why, but I thought we'd have to over pay for Mallett to come back. We can whack either next year without major repercussions.
I sure hope Mallett pans out. Otherwise, it's another year down the drain
