Ryan Mallett

Maybe this was mentioned, but he was with the team at Texas Childrens today.

That tells me all I need to know.

He has a deal in place or is RCH close ...

Well he currently is still under contract, and has team public obligations that were already agreed upon on his current contract.

Thought that as well but ted Johnson on 610 shot it down. Stated that it is not typical for an upcoming free agent to make these appearances if he does not have a contract ready

That would be great if true, surprised it hasn't been announced if that is case.

Prediction- Mallett will be a top 12 QB next yr.
Based on which metric?

Shouldn't we aim a little higher? :fingergun:

Top 12 - a little above average. I thought the Texans would try to get away from that trend with the new regime.

Tough to predict higher. Once he gets there we can talk about ceiling and if it's good enough. As a 1st year starter* that would be very good.

* This will be akin to Schaub's 2007 - he came in 13th in QB rating.

Mallett would "love to be here" in 2015
Posted Feb 25, 2015
Drew Dougherty

Six days after Rick Smith and Bill O'Brien said they'd like to have Ryan Mallett back with the Texans in 2015, the quarterback echoed their sentiments.

"I'd love to be here," the free agent said. "Hopefully we can get something worked out."

Mallett, O'Brien and several other Texans were at a Texas Children's Hospital appearance on Wednesday afternoon, and he took time out from mingling with the kids to meet with the media. He was pleased to hear the team's general manager and head coach wanted him to remain a Texan.

"It feels good that you're wanted. It's better than being not wanted," Mallett said.

As a starter in 2014, Mallett and the Texans went 1-1. He was victorious on the road in his debut at Cleveland, and then struggled as Houston lost at home the next week to the Bengals. After being acquired in a trade with the Patriots at the end of August, Mallett watched from the sidelines for the first nine weeks of the season.

Even though his season ended when he was placed on the injured reserve in late November, Mallett was still around the team and NRG Stadium on a regular basis. With his arm in a sling, he was a constant presence on the sidelines at practice. Since the season ended, he's been at the facilities rehabbing.

Without a sling on his arm, and nearly three months after the surgery, Mallett was optimistic about his return from the injury.

"I'm getting close," Mallett said. "It's a day-by-day process. So we'll see how it goes."

As far as throwing, Mallett mentioned that he'd "tossed it around a few times".

Last Thursday at Lucas Oil Stadium, O'Brien detailed the commitment Mallett's shown to the team.

"Since the day after the Cincinnati game, he’s been diligent in his pre-surgery, post-surgery," O'Brien said. "He was in all the meetings after he was hurt. He tried to help Fitzy when he went back in there. Savage. He tried to help Case the last two weeks. He’s been around. He loves football."

I heard TD say it, as well, and he said you never see pending FA players sporting full team gear at charity events just days before free agency begins.

That was my sign when they posted that picture that Mallett will be our starting QB in 2015.

I noticed none of the actual Texans were wearing any Texans gear at all. That told me Ryan Mallett packed light for his little stay in Texas.

This should clarify:

This one helps, too:

Putting Mallett in as starter just to satisfy the curiosity of a fickle and impatient fan base isn't a recipe for winning. If Mallett was doing enough in practice he'd be starting right now. Obviously he isn't so he's not.

You might as well get comfy with being disappointed this year if you're already upset with O'Brien for not making a QB change. I firmly believe Fitzpatrick, unless injured will remain starter for the year.

Less than three weeks later Mallett was named starting QB.

We get it, dude doesn't like Ryan Mallett but feels the need to regurgitate it every once in awhile.

3 posts in 6 months about him. Wow, I'm a hardcore hater. LOL So my opinion about the guy differs from you.

I also like how you conveniently left out the post I was replying to when I wrote about getting comfortable with Fitzpatrick. It was at a time when the Texans were doing OK but people were bashing O'Brien for not making the change at QB. But whatever fits your narrative, I guess.

The reply was to explain your cryptic post, not TK's perspective.

I do not have a "narrative" (what a trendy word!). I'm just a Texans fan hoping for the best in 2015.

The problem isn't that your opinion differs; It's that you can't support it.

Bingo. Bring valid analysis to the thread instead of drive-by drivel. Criticize his mechanics, leadership, or other QB qualities, and it gives us something to discuss.

It's not about all being in agreement. The forum thrives on our different opinions. But, you have to present one other than some five year old story about his college days, especially when his four years as a pro has revealed that he's been a solid dude.

[Josh McCown's] three-year deal, agreed upon on Friday night, is worth $14 million, with incentives that could max the deal out at $20 million, a league source told Northeast

It includes $6.25 million in fully guaranteed money, including $5.25 million in year one.

His $4.66 million average is in line with other "bridge'' quarterbacks who come in and start for a team for a year or two while they find their quarterback of the future.

His signing likely means the end in Cleveland for hometown favorite Brian Hoyer.

McCown's $6 million in incentives are tied to playing time and the team reaching the playoffs, meaning year one could top out at $7.25 million

In the OLD DAYS, we called it a preconceived notion and it was to be avoided.

Does that say "starter" to you? If you look at those numbers & think he's being brought in to compete with Manziel for the starting position, then expect Mallett's numbers to be higher.

If you look at those numbers & think, "Damn, Manziel got beat out of the starting job before FA even started." Then expect Mallett's numbers to be similar.

I think that's the low end of starter money. $5.25M guaranteed in year 1 with the possibility of making $7.25M... (I know it's a long shot for the Browns to make the play offs, so realistically may not be a word used here). But still...

I'm expecting Ryan Mallett to get somewhere around $6~$7M in year one. A prorated bonus of $5M/yr & a $2M salary or something like that.

The ball park is right, but McGown has many more actual starts under his belt so the comparison may be a ceiling rather than a floor. And this would be in line with my guesses. I like the incentives portion of the contract, but I don't think we get a three plus year deal out of Mallet without some sort of early out clause.

McCown's deal is essentially a one year prove it deal, leaving maybe $1 million in dead money in 2016.

I think Mallett gets more than McCown on a per year average.

I think I disagree, his two game resume doesn't garner "starters money," we'll have to have a gentleman's bet.

Nothing wrong with disagreeing. You think he'll get less than $5.25M....

I know we signed Schaub to $6M/yr eight years ago having one start his rookie year, one start his sophomore year, no starts his third year in the league & having absolutely no connections with our coaching staff at that time.

At least Godsey has been with Mallett for four years. OB was the offensive coordinator when New England drafted him & he spent a whole season coaching him last year.

"We" (guys like you & me) would like to see more before we accept him as the starter of our team, but OB had made that decision last year after watching him in practice for ten weeks.

OB wants him back, he's said as much. He wants him as our starter. How much is starter money?
