BTW I am definitely NOT in favor of starting a rookie CB next year. Find a way to make sure this does NOT happen!!!!!:kubepalm::mariopalm:
Jjo is under contract. If we don't sign Kj, we've still got Darryl Morris & Aj Bouye. If we draft a CB, there should be no reason to start him unless we have catastrophic injuries in the off season.

So you're all for drafting a CB in the first or second and have him sitting a year?
Whoever is 3rd will play about 60% of snaps.
So you're all for drafting a CB in the first or second and have him sitting a year?
Or if he's a better player.
For him to sit the whole year, our other CBs would have to play extremely well. Much better than expected otherwise I'd question the wisdom in drafting a DB that high we didn't need.
Like XSF. I'm not upset at all that he didn't play much in 2014 because I don't think anyone expected Ben Jones to hold on to his spot all year. I'm one of the few (if not the only one) who thinks Jones played well enough to start all year. If I were one of the Ben Jones haters, I'd definitely be peeved that we spent a 2nd round pick on a guard.
But as many times as we have 3 & 4 CBs on the field, I'd be upset if our 1st round CB couldn't work his way up to at least #3. & while I'm ok starting the season with Morris or Bouye as the #2, I look at it as an opportunity for them to earn the job.
Exactly.
Building thru the draft only works if you keep your good players
If we have to draft a CB in the first round because we let our first round CB (who was just coming into his prime) leave, I'll be upset. We have too many other areas that have holes or no depth, we don't need to create more.

Ok... I didn't know you were going for that angle.
So how much do you want to give Kj to keep him. Surely there's a number that's too high.
I think he's worth between $5 & $7 million. If we have to pay more than that to keep him, then I'll get on the fire Rick Smith wagon... I'll get firmly on the fire Rick Smith wagon.
If we loose him because some other team wants to pay him $8M... c'est la vie. If Rick can't get Jjo to restructure, or we end up cutting him for the cap savings, then I'll be firmly affixed on the fire Rick Smith wagon.
On one hand, we're kissing Pete Caroll's butt because he found Richard Sherman in the 5th round, on the other we're saying we have to draft a first round corner if we lose Kareem Jackson.
Kareem is good... but I wouldn't put it past Dmo & Bouye to successfully replace him.
can KJ be franchised and if so, how hard would that hit the salary cap?

chris culliver is going somewhere.I'd rather pay the money for a known commodity than roll the dice for maybe
Vet FA + rookie is going to eat up most of what we'd have to pay KJ

chris culliver is going somewhere.
No, someone will OVERPAY him, and we won't.
If he was really interested in re-signing, he would have done it already. He remembers full well how badly the fanbase treated him the first two years he was here. I'm not going to speculate on how much that will factor into his decision, as it will be the $$$ that does most of the talking. But I'm a good reader of body language. On a recent radio interview, they asked him point blank if he wanted to remain a Texan. He hemmed and hawed around it so much that the interviewer had to ask him again, "do you want to remain a Texan?" After a pause, he finally said yes, but anyone listening could tell that he really doesn't.
That's why I made my earlier post, saying that they should rename this thread to "improbable re-signing" because that interview convinced me that he is gone, gone, GONE.
"To see where weve grown as an organization and me as a player, I guess its just a testament to how hard the coaching staff and the GM and how hard Bob and Cal have worked to get the right people here, to get the team going in the right direction, as well as me," Jackson said. "For them to get the right coaches in to help me progress my game.
link"Theyve always been in my corner," Jackson said. "Its always been positive from them and from me. its just one of those things. You have growing pains, but at the end of the day, you get to a point and youre comfortable."
That will factor into Jackson's thinking this offseason. So will what he saw during the 2014 season, in which new Texans head coach Bill O'Brien, new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel and the staff helped Houston rise from 2-14 to 9-7, on the brink of a playoff berth.
"Id love to be back here," Jackson said. "What Coach O'Brien has brought here with the coaches and stuff like that, with the system and stuff like that, I definitely want to be a part of whats starting to happen last year and progressing into the future."

Kareem Jackson (@ReemBoi25): I rather not have the franchise tag & rather be locked in long term. Haven't put much thought into it. #Texans

#Texans CB Kareem Jackson (@ReemBoi25): Very anxious but Rick Smith has been in contact with my agent & they want to get it done before FA.
@SiriusXMNFL: Free Agent CB Kareem Jackson: I'm looking for a team that has a great HC/DC and that is making strides towards winning.
@SiriusXMNFL: Free Agent Kareem Jackson Money isn't the top priority for me but I want to compensated. You work for that 2nd contract
The key word is compensated and at which high level.
Kind of a nicer way to say pay me Rick.
Bottom line is unless KJ gets what he want he will go to FA. If he gets to FA he's a goner. If I'm a betting man KJ's a goner.
Does this mean no Joseph?
I don't know. He's made a few comments about coaching and direction of the team. I think he really likes playing for Crennel and OB. I'm hoping a deal gets done

I thought it was pay one or the other not enough for both.
I thought it was pay one or the other not enough for both.
Jonathan Joseph is all accounted & paid for. However, many believe he isn't worth what we'll be paying him & what his cap will be. Asking him to take a pay cut is about not over paying for the production.
He's still one of the top corners and replacing him wouldn't be easy. I don't think any of the young guys is ready to step up and be the #1 corner yet.
Not sure why everyone wants to get more cap space to spend more of someone else's money they ain't got no control over.
Yep,
With Rick Smith calling the shots I agree with keeping what you know vs what you don't know philosophy. If Rick was a competent GM he should let KJ walk add a WR like Randall Cobb in FA (His starting out asking price is 9 mil per.) and let him be the dynamic slot WR/KR/PR weapon he is.
Then draft a PJ Williams/Waynes in the 1st rd. But since we're talking about Rick Smith status quo is fine.
This would add much needed speed to the Texans roster.
I don't think GB let's Cobb walk.
He just made GB's job in that easier essentially saying he'd take the same contract as Jordy Nelson. Unlesss
They are philosophically against paying a slot that much odds are he re-signs with them. And why not, Rodgers as QB and a SB challenging team?
I don't think GB let's Cobb walk.
I'm hoping we keep KJ and JJo, and then get either Shelton/Brown or Williams/Waynes in the first. Either way is fine with me, a run stopping pocket pusher or a cover guy with ball skills.
Agree we need to add speed, just don't think Cobb will be the guy
I agree with you about KJ.
Malcolm Brown is my guy. He should be there at 16. He doesn't take plays off.
http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexan...e-franchise-tag-on-kareem-jackson/#30530101=0At 26, hes a five-year starter whos been paired with Johnathan Joseph for the last four seasons. The Texans have every intention of keeping them together. But there are teams such as Oakland, Jacksonville, Tennessee and the New York Jets not to mention playoff teams like Cincinnati and Indianapolis whose cap cups runneth over with tens of millions to spend.
If the Texans are unable to keep Jackson, replacing him will become their top priority in free agency or the draft.
Other than signing Jackson to a new deal, the only way to keep him would be to use the franchise tag on him, guaranteeing him a one-year deal for $13.05 million. Thats not going to happen, though.
Its deal or no deal.
If the salary cap is at least $142 million, as most project, the Texans will be about $10 million under.
NFL rules allow for a three-day window, beginning March 7, for agents to negotiate with other teams. For instance, Tony Fleming, who represents Jackson, can talk to as many teams as he wants during that period, but no deal can be reached with another club before free agency begins.
A lot of teams will be interested in Jackson if hes available. For instance, Cincinnatis secondary coach is Vance Joseph. He coached Jackson for three seasons with the Texans. Jackson matured and developed under Joseph.
The Bengals, who are coming off another one-and-done in the playoffs, are flush with cap dollars. Again. Do you think theyd be interested in Jackson to replace, say, Adam Pacman Jones?
Jackson prefers to stay in Houston. He likes his coaches. He played well last season for a defense that set a franchise record by forcing 34 turnovers.
The Texans tried to sign Jackson before the season, but he banked on the team improving and him playing a significant role in that improvement. He banked correctly.
Now Jacksons going to laugh all the way to the bank. The Texans just hope its Bob McNairs account.

My argument is that we can keep both. Why would we need one of the young guys to be the #1 corner?

May I remind you of how ~easy~ that transition from college to pro was for KJ? And you want to go through that cycle again with PJ? See you in 2018.
Welker would be another guy that could fill the WR/KR/PR role on the cheap and is probably the way that I would go on a short term deal.
So signing a 33 year old WR is cool but extending a CB to 32 is not.
Yep,
Because
1. Welker fills a huge need on this team and you could probably sign him for 2 yrs 6 mill.
2.Where as Joseph will cost much more $$$$.
Welker is one concussion away from retirement, if not already there.
Past that, realistically...
