Ryan Mallett traded to Texans

Is a backpedal to me. I think your initial assessment (Mallet starts Washington game) is off and then goes into believable territory (Fitzpatrick gets a few starts and then gets analyzed). I think it'd be fairly shocking to see Mallet get any snaps while the Washington game is still in question since he's so new to the rest of the team. I think the only reason there is any buzz to Mallet is because he was drafted by the Patriots. If he was a Jaguars player that we traded for I think a lot less forum posters would be as high on him as to claim that it would not be a big deal if he just happened to start the season as QB1.

Well, you're misunderstanding what I'm saying then.

There's a HUGE difference between saying that you wouldn't be surprised by something to actively expecting something. It's about possibilities. The expectation has a high probability while not being surprised by something means that it's not out of the realm of possibility. Two totally different things.

My "assessment" was never that Mallett would definitely start Game 1. I never, ever said that and if you think I did, then you're reading it wrong.

Mallett ready to play if needed? "Yeah, I think so. I’ve been preparing hard like I always do & if something happens, I’ll be ready to go."

Lemme condense the two statements for y'all.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Mallet trots out as the starter in the Washington game, HOWEVER, I expect Fitzpatrick to start".

IMO, there is no backpedaling going on. It's a pretty clear statement to me.

You have to present the appearance of other options when you go into a negotiation, and that we were even asking around was indicative of the fact we had one QB on the roster who could execute most of our offense from the LOS. Belichick had the option of rostering Mallett, which doesn't look like such a bad option with Brady already missing practice with a calf injury.

If I were BB, I would have held out to see if Texans go 1-3, then squeeze them for a higher/nearer pick. But, that's why he gets paid the big bucks and not me. :fingergun:

Belecheat had to feel the third backup who wouldn't be there next season isn't worth his 53rd man who would.

If that were to happen, I suspect it will be because of some phantom injury that hinders, not prevents Fitz from starting. Saves face and value.

Oops. Fitzpatrick was accidentally poked in the eye by JJ Watt at the last practice: Mallet gets the start.

Yeah, I can see that.

One tidbit i hadn't seen posted is that the Patriots actually had Mallett as the #1 QB on their draft board way back in the 2011 draft. It's obvious they saw something they liked about him.

Surely he'll be better than Gabbert and Ponder from that draft at least right?

At first glance, I thought you were a Hogs fan that just joined when Mallett was acquired due to only 19 posts, but noticed your join date of April '13.
Interesting. Seems like there might be a Hogs-related reason for you joining a year ago, but I can't figure out what.
I would say welcome aboard but your a virtual old timer, almost...

Yeah, I can see that.

I could see that too, but more likely that he could suffer and real injury during the game that thrusts Mallett into the game.

The kind that would like to see that in person, if it ever actually occurred... I think you pretty much nailed it when you said sicko.

I'm the guy that doesn't like the blood and gore, or the crashes. But I do love a good mystery.

To this day, I haven't watched the Everett injury or Theisman injury. If they are bad, I don't want to see them. But I am not squeamish if called upon to deal with it in real life. You do what you have to do and place your emotional response in check until later. I would have fit in well at NASA. Work the problem.

I feel the exact opposite of you. I like that they didn't rush out and overspend for a QB like those dumpster diving Franchises. I like that they knew what they wanted in a Coach. I like how they brought in bigger core players. I like how they committed to a strong D and core players with this Mgmt teams first draft. I can be patient as a fan and not have to have some bs move to appease instant gratification.

The only thing I didn't like was retaining Rick Smith. Otherwise I think I feel better about this franchise than I have been feeling for what is going on years now.
Suppose it was Rick Smith's idea to wait until the "price dropped"?

Suppose Rick talked O'Brien out of spending a 3rd during the draft because he figured Mallett would be available cheaper as the regular season drew near?

Would you still like the idea?

I'm trying to discern if this is a "Billy is my sweetie" feeling or you like the idea no matter it's originator.
:)

For me, it's the negotiation I like. It also put's me firmly in Rick's corner since I don't really care as much about the football choices as much as I do about how we handle those choices after they are made.

I think it just as likely that they had to prove to McNair that Keenum would never be the guy...

i think we need to sign mallett to a 2-3 year performance incentive contract with as little guaranteed money as possible before we trot him out there.

if he goes out there and looks great, we will be paying big time IF we can keep him next year.

If he's willing to sign a contract like that now, it's proof he's too stupid to play QB in the NFL.

I went to the Cowboys training camp years ago and they had a scrimmage against the raiders. A raider got poked in the eye and his eyeball came out of the socket (it was gruesome) they threw a towel over his head and carted him off the field.. He went right passed us screaming. Im pretty sure it ended his career. I'll never forget that.

Would be a better story if it was a Cowgirl. My $0.02. :kitten:

Lol, and before anybody gets the wrong impression. We weren't there to see the Cowboys. I was on vacation with my friend and his dad who's a huge raiders fan. This was back during the time when the Cowboys were wining superbowls though, so yeah.. it was a long time ago.

Yeah... likely story.

It is, I wasn't even into football then (just a kid) back in those days I was all about the Rockets (who also were winning the last titles and level of success they sniffed :( )

I did get Nate Newton's autograph though (cool dude.. Only guy who stayed hours after practice and signed for everyone.. And I mean pretty much everyone)

Right. & I don't mind paying someone after 2 or three years of exemplary performance, Arian, Jj... but after one season.. not so much.

well, if mallett or his agent didn't agree to it, I'd just sit him the entire year.

right now the Texans have leverage, but if we let him start without signing an extension and mallet goes out there and looks like nick foles the Texans are screwed.

I'm the same way. He can play for us, show us he's worth the money & get paid quite a bit in 2015 & 2016, then work out a more traditional starting QB contract for 2017.

Or.... he can sit, collect his pittence, sign a 1 year deal, compete for a starting job, hope that he's not competing against a teams new 1st round draft pick, or someone else they've invested more than a 1 year contract in... play for one season & get a contract like Josh McCown's glorified back up contract in 2016 & maybe earn a starting QB contract in 2018.

Ewwww, gross..... Cowboys practice.

I think Mallet will be the starter by game 7. Fitzmagic will struggle big time early on, but BoB will stick with him until Mallet has a complete grasp of the offense. Just my two cents.

If it takes 7 weeks to grasp an offense that he's been in for this long, something's wrong. I understand there's a slight difference in verbiage but it shouldn't take nearly two months I wouldn't think. If it does, then Ryan Mattet ain't the guy.

That was Don Mosebar, the Raiders center, I remember that the interior of their line was quite good.

After 7 games, we're going to be 7-0. Fitzpatrick won't be a big part of that, but he's going to be part of it. Just like with the Bills in 2011, except this time, his team isn't going to run out of gas.

As long as he doesn't feel like he's got to do it on his own, he's going to be fine. Better than fine.

Not really. Screwed is a relative term and a fleeting state of existence in the NFL. We were screwed, we're not at the moment, in another week we might be screwed again. 2 months later we might be playoff bound. Mallet produces one season looking like Nick Foles and we'll have some competition for his services but we'll be as likely to be able to sign him as anyone else. Hell, one season of looking like Nick Foles isn't exactly a guarantee of future performance. It remains to be seen whether or not Nick Foles looks like "Nick Foles" this year.

Mallet performing well in a system he knows well following years of study is I think an easier signing for us (where said system and open position are) than for someone else.

And if it doesn't work out we see where Doc Savage is on his development. If not we can always bundle some picks and trade up to get a top QB next year. Preferably not one who's a rapist or anything if possible.

Hey guys I'm new to this board Have never really followed the Texans until they signed Mallet, as of now the Texans are my new favorite team. I've watched Mallet in most all of his Collage games and wanted to give you an idea of what your getting. I think everyone knows he has a strong arm, in collage it was not uncommon to see him throw 60, 70 yard balls. But I think what most don't know about him is he has a very High Football IQ. HE is a student of the game ,loves watching film. Gruden raved about how well he did when he put him on the board explain plays. He's not perfect some of his con's would be he's not mobile,he can move in the pocket and can roll out in a practiced play but he wont win games with his feet. Another possible con or maybe Pro he has faith in his arm ,he believes he can put the ball in between 3 defenders to hit his target. The fact that he can do this means he will try to do it,sometime he makes it but sometimes he dose not.He did tend to over throw balls when he was under pressure. I feel Like HE never got a real shot in NE and I believe if he ever gets a chance to be in a offense that has at least a heartbeat of a running game and an Oline that can give him 5 to 6 sec on a regular bases that he can be one of the best QB in the NFL . If i was to describe him it would be like this he has the arm of Peyton, the Gunslinger attitude of Brett Favre, and the ability of Brady to pick apart a defense. HE just need a chance to get in a groove with core group of first stringers and I think the Texans Fans will come to love him.

Welcome to the board, I'm liking that name but to the bold AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN in the NFL.

.

I personally love it when a player brings his own fans into the family. Others don't really care for it. Welcome aboard & I hope you enjoy communing with us as we embark on what's surely going to be a bumpy ride.

However, just so you know, the next time the Texans OL provides 5 or 6 seconds of prot9, will be the first time they did. Not to worry though. We're going to dominate in the ground game & if Mallet's play fake is as sick as I've heard, he'll have plenty of time.

If it helps makes me a better fan I do have AF on my Fantasy Team,so I hope he kills it this year.:hurrah:

Holy crap, yep that had to be him..I looked up where the Cowboys held their camp that year and it was at St. Edward's University.. We were visiting my buddy's great grandmother in Fredericksburg at the time. (BTW, great little city, I recommend anybody to stop by if you're passing through the area)

AUSTIN, Texas - Veteran Raiders center Don Mosebar underwent emergency surgery Thursday to repair a badly damaged left eye incurred during the team's morning drills, and his future as a football player may be in doubt.

Mosebar, the only remaining Raider to have played on the team's last Super Bowl champion in 1984, was poked in the eye during a morning drill against the Dallas Cowboys at St. Edward's University. After Raiders head trainer Rod Martin and other team medical personnel attended to Mosebar for about 10 minutes, the player was taken off the field on a golf cart holding a towel against his eye and driven to Brackenridge Hospital, about three miles from the facility.

http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Mosebar-sustains-serious-eye-injury-3136112.php

When you're young some things are burned into your memory banks, that is one of mine. I haven't thought about it in years until the discussion of football players getting poked or bones stuck in their eye though. I did always feel bad for that guy. I wonder how often that type of injury has happened before on the football field, because I never saw it before that day and haven't heard about anything like it since. The guy lost his sight, so sad.
