Here are two things that tell me this was a good move:
1.) Mallett automatically gives OB another option at QB and has improved the whole QB group. I wanted Case to succeed here, but it's pretty obvious this offensive scheme does not suit him at all. We know Fitz in a best case scenario is going to an average QB. I'm sure if we put OB on truth serum, he would probably say that all of our QBs stink or aren't ready for primetime. OB is trying his best, without gambling too much by mortgaging his future, to "get better than we were yesterday." I think he did that. And still leaves the door open to draft a QB if all the QBs are ultimately unsuccessful. For all you crybabies that have whined in excruciating fashion about the QB position, despite not realizing that good QBs don't fall out of the sky into your lap, THEY DID SOMETHING and they gave up next to nothing in the process. Are you happy? Probably not because you are the part of the fan base that enjoys the negative aspects of following a team more than being rational about the situation and realizing that if you can't fix the QB position right away, you should improve every other position you can.
2.) Mallett doesn't have to be Joe Montana to be successful here. I'm sure it would be a huge help if we had one of the "elite" QBs that can put his team on his back and lead them to victory. Most teams do not have that luxury, Texans included. Mallett just needs to play smart, move the chains (and occasionally take the top off the defense), and not turn the ball over. I believe our defense will be much improved this year, and our ST are light years ahead of where they have been for several years. Outside of Brady, Gronk (when healthy), RT and maybe another spot on the OL, the Texans have superior talent at all the other positions of the Pats. We have more big play guys than they do, so Mallett doesn't have to be as good as Tom Brady is, he just needs to be Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer or Russell Wilson. This may be the reason that BB traded him because he knew he needs a better QB because the Pats do not have outstanding talent, and the QB has to be 'the man' to make them win.
This is a win-win-win situation. Possible scenarios:
A.) Fitz plays better than he ever has before and we have a QB that is adequate for this year, Mallett is a backup who is comfortable in the offensive and gives Savage time to develop;
B.) Fitz sucks it up and Mallett does a good job and the Texans have our QB for the foreseeable future that can throw the deep ball to our star receivers; or
C.) Fitz blows, Mallett is hot garbage, the Texans take a look at Savage later in the year when we're already out of the playoff hunt and he's either good or not and plan accordingly.
If Savage is good, we don't need to find/draft another QB, and if he's not, the Texans are one of the worst teams in the league and will spend our first pick on a QB in the draft. That sounds like a plan.
