Texans 2014 Training Camp

Per Brian Smith re. AJ:

This early in the game, you certainly don't want to be seeing hamstring issues of any sort......especially in AJ or Arian.

Keep in mind that Grade 2 (partial tears) and Grade 3 (complete tears) are pretty easy to spot.......there's a whole lot of pain and significant limping going on. But in the case of the more common Grade 1 (micro tears), It can be harder to recognise, these are tricky little buggers in that it can almost feel like a small cramp that can come on during a run, you can continue to run although it will cause a diffuse soreness behind your leg that can settle very quickly once you have stopped, so leading you to think you have not torn anything especially as you won’t see any bruising or feel any heat or swelling and feel nothing in normal day to day activities except maybe a twinge on getting up out of chairs or up/down stairs, most of these class of tears need to be properly managed and normally its at least 1-2 weeks of physio treatment. A seeming "tweak" recognized as only a cramp in some cases may actually end up being a 3 month rehab if it is not properly diagnosed and treated.

The reason is due to a couple of reasons first and most obviously with a Grade 1 tear players can continue to run, and tend to do so, even in pain.
But limping is not a hallmark of a Grade I tear. Continued pay disrupts the healing processes and prevents the tear from healing, secondly it can depend on where the tear is located, if more in the tendon it heals slower than if in the muscle belly, all due to the differing bloody supply. Finally they are commonly misdiagnosed as just a cramp and so again back to the same issue of allowing the player to continue to run or even doing inappropriate rehab such as stretching the hamstrings in the early stages and so not allowing the tear to heal.

Well its simple if you’re a professional football player, you err on the side of precaution, especially an elite one like AJ and AR where there is no room for misdiagnosis. Both should be undergoing MRI in my opinion. Certainly nothing lost, In my experience dealing with them like this, being cautious may take a little longer and may be frustrating at the start, but it will mean in the long run you won’t be back to see the physio a few weeks later with same problem. You do not want to return too quickly if you are indeed dealing with a Grade I tear instead of a simple cramp, since you do not want to stretch your hamstrings......they must be given time to let the scar tissue lay down over the tear without disrupting it.
I know you follow this stuff outside of the Texans players, but I don't know to what extent.

Are you aware of what's going on with Odell Beckham and, if so, do you believe this might be the case with his hamstring issues?

Has anyone noticed Alfred Blue in TC? I'm really hoping he can make an impact with the Texans. There really hasn't been any mention of the RB's except AF, and that's been less than good news.

Yes, reports are Blue looks very good catching the ball out of the backfield and is picking up the protections, which is a must. Blue & Brown getting extra reps with Arian on the sidelines -- should hear more about them after today's practice.

AJ is out for today's practice, as well.

NFL AM's Molly Qerim is at practice today, so that's pretty much all that matters.

Wouldn't be surprised if AJ Bouye was the 3rd CB coming out of training camp. -JMcC

Clowney was dominating in 1-on-1 drills, driving guys 5-10 yards into the backfield, almost picked up a TE and slammed him into the ground... I have no doubt that Jadeveon Clowney can succeed standing up/playing in space -- Willie McGinest at Texan training camp this morning with NFL AM

Dale Robertson @sportywineguy
Case Keenum and C James Ferentz misconnected on a snap today and they got sent off to run. Same rules apply for everybody.

BOB dropped his water bottle and said, "Fumble! I got to go run a lap." Anybody who fumbles in practice has to do one.

BOB on the kickers: I think they've both kicked well. Boz (Chris Boswell) has been good for Randy.

BOB: Posey is a guy who really wants to be good. He's really working at it. His big thing is staying healthy, staying out there.

BOB: Tom Savage doing a good job of coming in early and staying late. Hard worker.

BOB: We have a high standard here. We expect to perform well. I.e., no excuses for mistakes accepted.

BOB: Defense had the upper hand today.

BOB: Think these guys worked hard today. Still learning how we practice. Very enjoyable guys to coach.

Waiting for BOB. Day 4 is in the books. There were some rough patches. We'll what the coach has to say.
Dave Zangaro @DZangaro
Not going to be a whole lot of clarity around injuries during the O'Brien Era with #Texans "Not life-threatening" is a common phrase.

OB: says B. Brooks is getting "closer" and doesn't think Andre Johnson's, Arian Foster's or Ballentine's injuries are "life threatening."

O'Brien says officials will be in camp next week. #Texans

O'Brien says Ben Jones has had a really good offseason. Can see him getting better day-by-day. #Texans

O'Brien says Tuggle is an instinctive guy, came back in good shape.

O'Brien said the defense had the upper hand over the offense today. #Texans

O'Brien says they did some more situational stuff today. #Texans Overall, O'Brien says it was a good day.
Deepi Sidhu @DeepSlant
Case Keenum on learning a new offense: Playing experience is priceless in this league. #Texans

Clowney looks like a blur on film according to D.J. Swearinger. #Texans
Houston Texans @HoustonTexans
O'Brien: "We will have officials here next week and obviously for (practices with) Atlanta." #Texans #NFLTrainingCamp

"I think Ben Jones has had a very, very good offseason. I can see his improvement day to day." #Texans #NFLTrainingCamp

O'Brien on Tom Savage: "When you're a rookie QB, it's difficult/ He's doing a good job of coming in for extra help/ He's a talented passer."

O'Brien on if he expects sloppiness at the begining of training camp. "No. We have a high standard here." #Texans #NFLTrainingCamp

O'Brien says team did situational drills/ no huddle drills today. "It's a very enjoyable group of guys to coach." #Texans #NFLTrainingCamp

Don't know how much he has left in the tank. It's early but Tyson Clabo is way behind at the moment. #Texans

Kicker Chris Boswell looks healthy and kicks the ball with ease. Ball jumps off his foot. Solid in FG duty today. #Texans

Dennis Johnson's struggles continued today. Rough two days for the second year back. #Texans

Ricardo Mathews provides some interior pass rush. Looked solid in 1on1s today. Good mix of power and quickness. #Texans

Totally agree with @taniaganguli. Tuggle could be pushing for bigger things when the season opens. #Texans

One of the biggest jumps from last year to this year is ILB Justin Tuggle. 2 days of contact he has impressed. #Texans

Jerrel Powe said he has one job when he lines up, to "Eat up blockers." #Texans

Powe called Kendrick Lewis a "field general." Lewis has had a solid start to camp. #Texans

Jerrell Powe said of Kendrick Lewis. "I can't get rid of him." Played with Lewis at Ole Miss and with the Chiefs. #Texans

Farrell spent time with O'Brien at Penn State. #Texans

Newly signed Mike Farrell is a 6-6 and 303 lbs. Offensive tackle from Penn. State. #Texans

It's competition. You just don't ever want to lose a 1-on-1 battle with no Tight End at any time in this league... I'm learning how to use my hands... I'm ready to line up wherever RAC wants me. -- JdC

#Texanstrianingcamp was closed today so we can’t tweet specifics. But Jadeveon Clowney (who’s not 100%) was moving folks in 1v1s. #beast

Talked to the always entertaining D.J. Swearinger about his pick today and looking good while doing it. Also said Clowney is a blur on film
Tania Ganguli @taniaganguli
Two new players at camp today. OT Mike Farrell and RB Tim Cornett. Cornett stood out when he trucked a DB during a team drill. #Texans

Tuggle has played such little linebacker that he has so much room to grow. Made a smart decision to switch positions in college. #Texans

Been thinking this since OTAs. I wouldn't bet against Tuggle as the starter next to Cushing this year with Reed back outside. #Texans

She is just plum good lookin!

That JJ interception looked like a very ill-advised pass by Fitz........an example of his dreaded specialty.

To me, that looks more like a bad through than an ill-advised pass. It looked to me like AJ was open as long as the QB led him and in this case, the QB threw behind him... right to JJ.

I thought I'd heard about him making a lot of great catches and running hard inside?

I know you follow this stuff outside of the Texans players, but I don't know to what extent.

Are you aware of what's going on with Odell Beckham and, if so, do you believe this might be the case with his hamstring issues?

Can be exactly what's going on. But in his case there may be an underlying factor that has led to the hamstring injury. He was plagued with back injuries throughout his college career. Either of these injuries can feed on each other in a vicious circle due to their complimentary effects on mechanics. They better at least carefully revisit his back status (as well as his hamstring status) as he is showing continued hamstring problems.

I re-emphasize, Grade I tears do not necessarily show up by observation of the player.

Beckham has yet to be cleared for practice, the National Football Post reports. Speaking of the rookie wideout, coach Tom Coughlin stated, "He actually looks pretty good out there, moving around, catching the ball. He doesn't favor anything. I'm just hoping it's a real short amount of time."

I think we're essentially saying the same thing.

To me, there's a difference.

An ill-advised throw is one that you shouldn't make because the receiver is covered and you don't have a window. You can't complete it even if you make a good throw. The defender has to make a mistake or your receiver has to turn into a defensive back and take the ball away from the defender in order to complete it. It's a bad decision.

A bad throw is not necessarily an ill-advised one. You can make the perfect decision and then just not make the throw. In that case, it's a matter of execution or timing.

Since this throw is behind AJ and it looks like he would have been open if the throw was ahead of him, it looks more like a bad throw to me than a bad decision.

You are absolutely correct in assigning the different definitions. I will definitely defer to your differentiation.......I originally meant to point out that this was a bad throw, not one that shouldn't have been thrown.

True that. It's his accuracy that has plagued him in his NFL career not so much his decision making. A smart game manager does not completely eliminate lack of natural ability to target tight windows in motion.

Asked about people questioning Clowney’s dedication, Duane Brown said, “I don’t see that at all. He’s come to me on a number of occasions asking for pointers and just talking to him I can tell he wants to be great. Like I said, he comes in here every day and works, doesn’t complain, and that’s all you can ask for.

He’s a heck of an athlete (and) very hungry to learn, to be a good player. I really like to see that. He comes in here, he works his tail off. He’s new, he’s fresh and it’s still early, but I think he’s going to be as good as he wants to be.

Brown said Clowney working with J.J. Watt on the same side “is really going to cause problems for defenses once they get in sync. Just taking on one of them at a time is a battle.

So, uhhhh... anything from camp today? It's a slow day at work...

Look up..... post #252.

Ah, alright. My bad.

No worries. I'm always adding content to that main daily camp post. (Just added some more).

Otherwise, I'd be spamming the thread with too many posts. Trying to keep each day's info localized in one/two posts. Easier access.

Hrm.

It might be easier access but without separate posts, I have no way of knowing that you've added more stuff. So when you update like that, I'll never see anything past the first time I saw the message.

I'd prefer you slamming the thread with posts, personally. That way I don't miss anything.

Yes I agree.

I didn't know you (Playoffs) added more content to the original post until you replied to 281. Anyway, appreciate all the updates!

I know how to tell if you've updated.

The problem is that I will never, ever see that you've updated. I don't go back through every post you've made searching for updates; I click on threads that have new information and click on the button to take me to the first unread message. Updates don't register in that, they don't show up as new information, they don't show up as unread messages.

So I read a message you've posted, it gets marked as read. You update it. It's still marked as read. I never see your update.

If someone has a problem with your volume of posting, I'd tell them to take a hike or change from e-mail notification to one of the summary methods. You're doing a great service to all of us by making these posts but you're just running around in circles if most of us never actually see what you've posted.

Basically, my friend, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. :)

Pfft! Like PN said, who cares about the people that get pissed. As long as they're updates you can post 20 in a row if you want.

The only multiple posts that bother me are the one's that don't use the multi-quote feature and end up quoting 5 individual posts.

Keep on keepin on, Playoffs

From the first link :

-Free Safety Jawanza Starling is slowly making progress and is turning into a better fit for what this team might need. There is the idea of a true free and strong safety and Starling is the next best free safety after Kendrick Lewis. Starling has nice instincts and a good grasp of this new defense and he has quietly put together a solid camp.

I was a little annoyed last year when we cut him and he went to NY, but I was happy we got him back. I thought we should have carried him instead of Keo.

He and Grimes are two UDFA guys I like. But Grimes is going to have to get healthy or he won't be around much longer.

Keep posting playoffs.

With you and CND I'm always trying to give rep to random posts because of the volume of quality contributions, but you're both always MSR.

Sooooo, just want to say we all appreciate it (apart from the post count nazis)

Really looking forward to seeing footage of Prosch blowing guys up in the hole.

Hopefully when they have some of these full speed, full contact practices OB has talked about we'll get to see that.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock
After Keith Browner was stuffed twice, he took Kollar's words to heart. He came out violent vs Witzmann & I believe still has him on skates

Maybe the most lopsided 1 on 1 was Xavier Su'a-Filo vs David Hunter. Hunter destroyed XSF on both reps. D...stroyed.

By "wiggle" I mean a package where they ask the NT not to hold the point, but instead penetrate. That's his strength, moving 300lbs quick.

Austin Brown is an agility / size player. His agility is his strength, only makes sense there, if they'll have inside "wiggle" package

Great leverage in 1 vs 1 on Clabo. Played in scheme at Bama. Limited time, due to missing offseason RT >>>How is Pagan?

ILB: could still see Brooks inside with Cushing, but Tuggle is really making a push, so much so that Brooks may stay outside.

Jamison and Ricardo both could see equal time opposite of JJ. Different looks vs down / distance, groupings

As of today only: Derek Newton at RT, Powe is our starting NT, Brooks/Whitney/Clowney are all starters at OLB, just depends how they're lined up & what they're facing.

Ricardo vs Kupper: Moving on...You all know how this ended. Destroyed him on first rep, followed up w/ stick step outside, spin back in.

Jerrell Powe vs Chris Myers: Powe won 2-0. Used underarm rip first rep. Followed up by pushing Myers out of anchor & re-anchors.

Tim Jamison vs Ben Jones: Jamison won 2-0. Wasn't even close.

The added weight definitely seemed to assist in Brown's strength vs JJ.

Finally got to watch some 1 on 1 OL vs DL: Duane Brown vs JJ Watt - Brown won 2-0. Drove him past pocket once, anchored the other.

Texans offense was sloppy today and the defense was much better IMO. Asked O'Brien what he thought: "I'd say the defense had the upper hand"

For the fans of the feet, I had a tough vantage point, but this is what I saw on Chris Boswell to end practice...Boswell attempted FGs of 35, 40, 45, 48, 50, & 50 (from the best I could see). Kicked from different angles and made all 6 (from my view).

Not a bad bet RT >>>putting my money on Alfred Blue to back up Foster in 2014!

Max Bullough was good and bad. Good: seemed comfortable QBing the D & controlling shifts. Bad: I saw zero instincts today. Several times.

AJ Bouye had a couple of moments today, where the mental side of zone coverage got to him.

Hands were an issue Sunday. Cuts nice, needs lanes RT >>>>>any thoughts on how Dennis Johnson has looked

If the offensive line was a hand, then Alex Kupper stuck out like the sore thumb.

Andre Brown had an easy underneath route clank off his hands and later fumbled the ball.

On the flip side: Tyson Clabo looked like a man who didn't want to be out there, today. Stiff, is putting it nicely.

Justin Tuggle had the best day out of all the LBs. Solid day, love the way he plugs a hole, good technique as well.

Ricardo wasn't the only player on the line impressing. It was almost impossible for the OL to anchor vs David Hunter.

Ricardo Mathews was a beast in 1 on 1s and 2 man stunts. Versatility is definitely there.

Ryan Griffin has been impressive as a complete tight end. They could lean on him in the passing game or as an inline blocker.

Duane Brown had a very nice day. More on this in a minute.

Alfred Blue burst thru the line today & rattled off a nice run today. He's looking good, but his upright style thru the hole concerns me.

Tim Jamison has been more impressive than Jared Crick since training camp has opened. Jamison playing very well.

C James Ferentz doesn't look like much & I'm guilty of judging a book by it's cover, but he impressed me today. Great leverage, technique.

Didn't get a chance to release some notes from the #TexanTC today. Been tied up since this morning, so here goes.

Boswell attempted FGs of 35, 40, 45, 48, 50, & 50 (from the best I could see). Kicked from different angles and made all 6 (from my view).

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 19s

For the fans of the feet, I had a tough vantage point, but this is what I saw on Chris Boswell to end practice...

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 21s

Not a bad bet RT @joeo1s: putting my money on Alfred Blue to back up Foster in 2014!

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 37s

Max Bullough was good and bad. Good: seemed comfortable QBing the D & controlling shifts. Bad: I saw zero instincts today. Several times.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 1m

RT @SportsTalk790: @JaysonBraddock caught up with @WillieMcGinest for a few questions at Texans camp http://www.sports790.com/onair/koch-and-kalu-48158/willie-mcginest-stops-by-texans-camp-12616175/ …

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 2m

AJ Bouye had a couple of moments today, where the mental side of zone coverage got to him.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 3m

Hands were an issue Sun. Cuts nice, needs lanes RT @barney71229096: any thoughts on how Dennis Johnson has looked and possible fit in new O

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 6m

Yes sir, day 3 RT @flsnupe: this cant be true, i mean he was drafted in 2013 wasnt he?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 11m

If the offensive line was a hand, then Alex Kupper stuck out like the sore thumb.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 12m

Andre Brown had an easy underneath route clank off his hands and later fumbled the ball.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 13m

On the flip side: Tyson Clabo looked like a man who didn't want to be out there, today. Stiff, is putting it nicely.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 14m

Justin Tuggle had the best day out of all the LBs. Solid day, love the way he plugs a hole, good technique as well.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 15m

Ricardo wasn't the only player on the line impressing. It was almost impossible for the OL to anchor vs David Hunter.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 16m

Ricardo Mathews was a beast in 1 on 1s and 2 man stunts. Versatility is definitely there.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 17m

Ryan Griffin has been impressive as a complete tight end. They could lean on him in the passing game or as an inline blocker.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 18m

Duane Brown had a very nice day. More on this in a minute.

Playoffs.............you beat me by 1 minute.............you're doing this on purpose to make me look bad!!!!!!!

You can tell if I've updated the main post by looking at the edit note timestamp at the very bottom of the post box.

People get pizzed when I post too often, so I try to use the community's resources fairly.
That only works if the revised post is on the same page you're looking at. I don't think - I could be wrong - that the "take me to the first unread post" button takes into account whether or not a post has been altered since you last read it.
Mods... what's the answer to that?

Bottom to top:

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 51s

Funniest moment for me: Mike Thomas did a double move on Kendrick Lewis that almost broke Lewis' ankles. Nasty!

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 21s

Joseph vs Hopkins: Joseph had Hopkins blanketed. Fitz put ball right on DeAndre & he uses all hands so that Johnathan couldn't break up.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 1m

1 on 1 WR vs CB: Lacoltan Bester had a step on Marcus Williams, Savage's throw was behind & Marcus got the PBU.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 37s

Not same as 11s. Wouldn't panic w/ OL. It's thin though RT @SotoTTU: lol so is this a good sign for our dline or bad sign for oline?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 18m

After Keith Browner was stuffed twice, he took Kollar's words to heart. He came out violent vs Witzmann & I believe still has him on skates

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 19m

Maybe the most lopsided 1 on 1 was Xavier Su'a-Filo vs David Hunter. Hunter destroyed XSF on both reps. D...stroyed.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 20m

By "wiggle" I mean a package where they ask the NT not to hold the point, but instead penetrate. That's his strength, moving 300lbs quick.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 21m

Austin Brown is an agility / size player. His agility is his strength, only makes sense there, if they'll have inside "wiggle" package

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 22m

Faced Crick today. They split 1 vs 1. He looks improved, so far RT @freakinfatvegan who is Newton Facing in the 1v1's

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 23m

Great leverage in 1 vs 1 on Clabo. Played in scheme at Bama. Limited time, due to missing offseason RT @freakinfatvegan: How is Pagan?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 25m

ILB: could still see Brooks inside with Cushing, but Tuggle is really making a push, so much so that Brooks may stay outside.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 26m

Couple great catches in a few practices. Dinged up today, minor RT @AsleepT: Anything on CJ Fiedorowicz yet, or head still spinning?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 27m

Jamison and Ricardo both could see equal time opposite of JJ. Different looks vs down / distance, groupings.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 28m

Brooks / Whitney / Clowney are all starters at OLB, just depends how they're lined up & what they're facing.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 29m

It's hard to list players as starters on defense. They're so multiple, different starters in different personnel groupings.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 29m

Yes RT @Red_DMartin: You think Powe is our starting NT come Week 1?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 29m

Derek Newton at RT RT @ChansFoote LB, DE, RT

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 31m

Could switch as players develop.... RT @ChansFoote: can you give your opinion on who wins some key battles in the dept chart? LB, DE, RT

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 32m

Ricardo vs Kupper: Moving on...You all know how this ended. Destroyed him on first rep, followed up w/ stick step outside, spin back in.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 33m

Health issues could lead to 5, want is probably 4. RT @texansinfo: they would carry 4 RBs ? 5 backs including Proche ?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 34m

Jerrell Powe vs Chris Myers: Powe won 2-0. Used underarm rip first rep. Followed up by pushing Myers out of anchor & re-anchors.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 35m

Tim Jamison vs Ben Jones: Jamison won 2-0. Wasn't even close.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 35m

OL issues, talent of D, chemistry, bad day RT @StrosRelegation: do you feel it is more talent on the D or just more rust for the O?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 36m

The added weight definitely seemed to assist in Brown's strength vs JJ.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 37m

Finally got to watch some 1 on 1 OL vs DL: Duane Brown vs JJ Watt - Brown won 2-0. Drove him past pocket once, anchored the other.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 38m

IF he becomes more consistent RT @texansinfo: you may have already answered this , but do you think Dennis Johnson makes the roster?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 38m

Texans offense was sloppy today and the defense was much better IMO. Asked O'Brien what he thought: "I'd say the defense had the upper hand"
