The Mock Draft thread - 2023

1679410714264.png

Tried another without trades and considering more what I think the Texans might do

2: CJ Stroud - QB - Don't think the Texans mess around with trading back and pick Stroud after Young is picked #1

12: Jaxon Smith Njigba - WR - Texans pair Njigba with Stroud to try to capture crazy connection the pair had in 2021. Says alot that Njigba was more producive for Buckeyes than both Olave and Wilson in 2021

33: Felix Anudike-Uzomah - ED - Uzomah might be best pure edge rusher in draft. Good value if Texans can land him in 2nd

65: Luke Wypler - C - Since 90% of drafts on here have Texans taking Wypler at 65 it must already be decided. Also good to already have C-QB exchange be comfortable

73: Blake Freeland - OT - Athletic long swing tackle with potential to replace Tunsil at LT in 3 years

104: Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomilson - CB - Very athletic aggressive slot corner. Only dig is penalties but that was only concern on Sauce.

161: Dorian Williams - LB - Smaller LB with play style, production and traits that compare to Fred Warner

188: Zack Kuntz - TE - Long fast TE prospect

201: Keaton Mitchell - RB - Would add another dynamic to offense to pair lightning with Pierce thunder

203: Jake Bobo - WR - Large target possession receiver

230: Mohamed Ibrahim - RB - Similar aggressive hard hitting back as Pierce backup

260: Cory Trice - CB - Long corner with good production and athleticism. Could also play free safety.

The chemistry angle is one I have pumped for.

Mock Draft 03-21-23.png

2. Stroud - either Stroud or Young. Whoever falls to us.

20. Van Ness - I'm not sure about Van Ness, but he's got a lot of tools and Ryans should be able to coach him up. He was the best value available at 20.

33. Jones - he is going to be a nice RT at the next level. Let him play behind Howard for a year and then insert him into the starting lineup.

37. Campbell - LB was a weakness last year and it didn't really get addressed in free agency. That makes me think the team uses an early pick at LB. Campbell is big, smart, and physical.

65. Wypler - he is one of the best Centers in the draft. If he doesn't earn the starting role immediately, it will probably happen sooner rather than later. Bonus if paired with Stroud.

73. Perry - he seems a good fit for the WCO. Not flashy, but he gets the job done. Sitting behind Woods should help him develop.

161. Kuntz - he is a big, athletic, pass catching TE. He's got good potential and he wouldn't need to start because we've got Schultz. He'll be a solid red zone threat.

188. Blackmon - good value at this spot. Solid coverage skills and good anticipation on jump balls. He should provide good depth at CB.

201. Rodriguez - strong, punishing back with pretty good vision. He should be able to adapt well to a WCO and move the chains on short yardage situations as well.

203. Diabate - good size and speed with decent bend as a pass rusher. Should at least be a pretty good special teamer.

213. Higgins - big, very strong, and a good route runner. He's on the slow side, but he may be a good fit for the WCO.

Unfortunately, I did a PFF Draft from the comfort of my bed….so I used my phone and cannot get a copy to paste.

What this draft yielded might have DeMeco feeling like his coffee was roofied with 2 Viagra.

1-008: DE- Tyree Wilson (Texas Tech)
1-015: DE- Lukas Van Ness (Iowa)

2-033: LB- Jack Campbell (Iowa)
2-035: WR- Jalin Hyatt (Tennessee)
2-044: OC- John Michael-Schmitz (Minnesota)
2-045: QB- Hendon Hooker (Tennessee)
2-048: OG- Cody Mauch (North Dakota State)
2-055: SS- JL Skinner (Boise State)

3-065: RB- Devon Archane (Texas A&M)

6-197: FB- Hunter Luepke (North Dakota State)
6-203: TE- Davis Allen (Clemson)

7-260: LB- Truman Jones (Harvard)

TRADES:

1. Texans Get:
WR- Denzel Mims
2024 RD5

1. Jets Get:
WR- Nico Collins

2. Texans Get:
2024 RD1 (2023 RD1-004 / RD2-035)

2. Colts Get:
2023 RD1-002

Based on recent signings…..this draft would fill holes while developing rookies to compete for starting jobs next season or in season this year.

That's a solid injection of talent.

What's comical, the PFF site gave this draft a solid C- grade. I can't help but laugh b/c the site would've drafted these guys way out of order as well. In my view, the players were roughly drafted in location on my board....and a few of the picks would make the Texans pretty lucky if they were still on the board at those spots.

That's crazy. A draft like that would bring in a lot of quality prospects.

Would set up the offense nicely.

2) Young
12) Hyatt
33) Schmitz

Yeah I reckon it would.
Just wish we had a couple of decent pass rushers. I know it was better than the eye test would suggest last season, but it would be nice to have a premier rusher on this team to force some double teams.

I swapped positions in early RD2. Took TE- Michael Mayer b/c he’s the most complete and NFL ready TE in the draft.

Got ILB- Campbell with the 2nd pick in RD2.

Kept the RD5 pick and selected WR- Bryce Ford-Wheaton to pair with WR- Denzel Mims (via trade). Texans have plenty of possession and slot receivers but seriously lack speed to stretch defenses. DM and BFW are both tall receivers and can blow through the 40 in 4.38 seconds. That speed will keep defenses honest.

Have you ever done a mock draft this year without taking Hendon Hooker?

No.....and why should I if that's my QB target? Have you done a 2023 Mock Draft and selected QB- Hendon Hooker?

No, but I’ve only mocked twice. One was a mock mock.

I don’t get mocking multiple times just to get the same players. I just hope Hooker goes to a team you like to follow. You seem really into him.

So your only response to the players selected in my Mock is to ask why I selected Hooker again. Player rankings are changing daily or weekly after Pro Days go into the books.

If you had noticed, I traded down in RD1 and actually selected Hooker with the 29th pick as I’m suddenly feeling Hooker may not make it out of RD1. You have to adjust your strategy to ensure your targets are selected.

Made (9) picks that fill areas of need with players that could really push for starting jobs.

Pretty good draft. I would take Wypler at 71 and play Schmitz at guard unless he beat out Wypler at OC. Wypler shorter which helps QB. I'm still not as sure as you are about Stromberg.

Even though Stromberg primarily played Center, it was nice to see that he has also played LG and RG. Stromberg is athletic with a really strong upper body and is strong as a run blocker. I still would’ve selected Cody Mauch who could play both T and G but he was selected earlier than expected.

Hooker has some tools but he has a long way to go not to mention the ACL. I seriously doubt he comes to a true QB needy team, but I could see him going to GB as some Love insurance, or even Dallas as a possible Dak replacement down the road, Miami is another idea in case concussion boy can’t continue much longer. I’m guessing 3rd rd but anywhere 2nd-4th seems logical to me.

I don't know, he could prove me wrong and I wish him success, but the list of QBs who were 26 or older as rookies is not an impressive list of names.

Did you know that Hooker was in the same HS class as Tua and Davis Mills? Najee Harris, Chase Young, and Tee Higgins were also in that class. Hooker is 25, but probably won't play his 1st NFL game until he's 26. Brandon Weeden was a 29 year old rookie QB, having played minor league baseball for several years prior to returning to college. Of course, Roger Staubach was 27 when he played in his 1st NFL game

C-19 really screwed things up for some of these athletes.

I hear Hookers stock is rising. Who the hell knows maybe he does go back half of the first. Personally I’m not taking a 26 yr old guy coming off an ACL and who wasn’t asked to make pro reads that high. I like him but don’t love him and his upside is mid pack starter to me. I’d take him early 3rd. I could be wrong as always!

Hooker would be 25 years old until 13 Jan….or he would still be 25 before the 2023 regular season was completed.

You know, A-A-Ron Rodgers was 25 years old when he made his first start…..didn’t seem to hold him or GB back at all.

Hooker’s stock is rising b/c his name would’ve been at the top of the board with the other QB’s had he not suffered his non-contact ACL injury. Hooker can make any of the required NFL throws, has a beautiful short compact throwing motion that offers plenty of heat, and he can hurt defenses when he tucks the ball and runs.

Not quite the same thing, cause you know Aaron did sit and learned behind a hof. Hooker won’t have that.

Unfortunately that’s going to be the case for any QB coming to the Texans. I actually like Hookers chances of making it happen quicker b/c he’s more mature and every bit as talented.

That's the best mock so far.
The only outliers are Wypler and Henley going that late.

Will McDonald
EDGE Iowa State
What's your opinion of McDonald's fit in the Texans defense? At 239 lbs, he doesn't fit the profile of a 43 DE. And McDonald will be 24 by the start of training camp. It's not like he's going to put on a lot of weight. I think Okoronkwo's lack of size kept the Texans from retaining him in free agency.

DeMeco had Samson Ebukam starting at DE the past two seasons opposite Bosa. The Texans got outbid for Ebukam in FA.

Ebukam is 6’2” 240 with 32.5” arms.

Mcdonald is 6’3 1/2” 239 with 34 7/8” arms. The extra 2” arm length in particular is more important for him
than adding say another 10 lbs or so.

Van Ness has 34” arms. Myles Murphy has 33.75” arms. Keion White 34” arms. Mcdonald’s extra length is going to compensate for him being a little lighter. The only day 1/2 edge rushing prospect with longer arm length is Tyree Wilson at 35 5/8” which is freakish.

I would love to see him available at 33. If he were somehow there at 65 I would be over the moon! With the way this mock fell i’d have Van Ness as starting base DE opposite Greenard. And have Mcdonald in Ogbo’s role as designated pass rusher. That would be a formidable four deep DE rotation with Hughes as the mentor.

But if I could only get one DE and it’s Mcdonald i’m fine with his outlook as the starting base DE and a solid three deep DE rotation. But he was my BPA at 65 the way this board fell which just so happened to elevate this defense into the next level. I’d consider DE solved for the foreseeable future if I came out of the draft with both Van Ness and Mcdonald!

Thanks, but I thought it was easier to count the ones who aren’t outliers and go about where they’re expected. Young, Van Ness, Riley Moss, maybe Jay Ward and Deuce Vaughn.

If the draft falls this way its a Seahawks-esque haul with franchise cornerstones galore. But I wont get my hopes up.

Did a late night PFN Mock that got me 11 picks inside the first 201. Got there by making (3) trades.

MOCK
1-002: DE- Will Anderson Jr (Alabama)
1-019: QB- Hendon Hooker (Tennessee)

2-033: WR- Jalin Hyatt (Tennessee)
2-050: OC- John Michael-Schmitz (Minnesota)

3-065: LB- Noah Sewell (Oregon)
3-073: RB- Devon Achane (Texas A&M)

4-104: OL- Ricky Stromberg (Arkansas)

5-168: SS- Gervarrius Owens (Houston)

6-180: DL- Habakkuk Baldonado (Pitt)
6-188: FB- Hunter Luepke (North Dakota State)
6-201: CB- Latavious Brini (Arkansas)

I would still offer the Jets Nico Collins straight up for WR- Denzel Mims.

The goal is speed. Mims, Hyatt, and Metchie could offer that. Achane would be another high end speed option on 3rd downs.

Luepke could be the Texans new Tom Rathman at FB. HL can do it all.

The simulator took the TE’s between 105 and 167. There’ll be UDFA and TE’s released in camp(s) to find another serviceable body. Maybe even Luepke could slide out to TE or H-Back on some downs.

You might wonder about (2) OC’s….both can play OG. The competition for the starting job at C would be good for the OL. I believe both are smart and athletic enough to be solid wherever they wind up at on the line.

When did Metchie become fast?
