The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

Yup lock this thread up before the Texan Die Hards have to deal with more cold, hard facts about their beloved.

Everything that needed to be seen and heard, has been seen and heard.

Good luck to JD. For a guy with a supposed poor work ethic - to come back from micro fracture and become a force was amazing. Will always remain a fan.

So rolled out of the sack this morning and turned on ESPN and caught a sight of Clowney wearing #91 with the Seahawks logo while going thru his first practice with new teammates in Seattle.
Brief presser and JD was classy in his comments as I figured he'd be, and he said all of the right things with his perfunctory comments but still seemed sincere and relaxed
and affable and said he was glad everything had been resolved.
In the presser he began his comments by saying he was grateful to Houston for drafting him #1 overall and giving him the opportunity in the NFL and he was very gracious in saying they had a great staff down there and he had great teammates. Clowney said he was just playing the cards he was dealt.
I'm happy for him, actually kind of proud of him and I've already practically got Oct 3 circled on my calendar which is the first nationally televised Seattle game.
Still definitely disappointed and a little pizzed we didn't work this thing out with Clowney but time to move on and get with the 2019 regular NFL season.
Still a strong Texans fan with or without Clowney. Always !

It is possible this lopsided trade was for exactly that reason. Has it crossed anyone's mind that after JD refused to sign his contract and be traded to Miami, that Houston took the loss and traded him to Seattle instead where he wanted to go and where he also received a guarantee he would not be tagged again next year all in an effort to show JD and everyone in that locker room that the Texans will not just blindly screw over their careers? Houston completely blundered their contract negotiation with JD, waited much too long to get good value, and after ultimately deciding they wanted Tunsil from Miami, decided to receive pretty much nothing in return for allowing JD to continue his career somewhere of his choosing.

Seems to me other stars on this team may see that as the team decidedly having their interests at heart even at a huge cost.

I can't see the the players in that locker room being too upset that OB is trying to protect their QB and trying to leverage one of his stars as trade bait. I can also see how they would appreciate OB making a fool on himself in the national football media for such a crappy trade, all to allow JD a fresh chance on a team he was interested in.

You realize that JD was all set to come to work after the Cowboys game, right?

The only thing the Texans did right in this whole mess was franchise tag him. Everything else would have been just fine, but OB just had to interject.

Tweet from @StephStradley: If I were a #Texans player, I’d be wondering about a culture that runs off best players with no equivalent replacements or plan. How do you get buy-in for that or that it’s best for team? The culture seems like it’s driven by the seat of O’Brien’s pants fueled by ego and anger. https://twitter.com/chronbriansmith/status/1168163820084310018

Yes, but we needed a LT and tried to trade him to Miami. Once JD got word of this, he was reasonably upset...and at that point willing to miss game checks. The front office fumbled.....and we moved on the best way we could without holding JD back further.

It’s all the Texan own doing is my point. They didn’t have to do jack with Clowney. If he wanted to miss game checks, that’s money they save. The only way it hurts is that he’s not on the field. Instead, they decide to get rid of him so he’s still not on the field, they get 2 replacement players and a 3rd AND pay $7M.

You realize Duane Brown called the owner a racist and the Texans got a 2nd and 3rd, right?

craziest thing is that the Seahawks can get their 3rd rounder back if he leaves next year. LOL so they basically rented a top 10 edge for 2 backup LBs and only pay him 10Ms while his ex team pays the rest and never lose draft capital in the process.

See what a good GM can do for you?

Which actually, is also the point I was trying to convey as well in response to the post I originally quoted that asked "If I were a #Texans player, I’d be wondering about a culture that runs off best players with no equivalent replacements or plan".

Carroll and Clowney press conference:

Pete Carroll:

-Rare football player
-Special skills
-He's pretty much got what you're looking for
-No question he's in good shape, we'll see how he responds
-(Having Duane here) We communicate with these guys & no doubt he helped through the process
-(Work ethic?) I watched him come out of college. That's just a young player to me. We'll see what happens. He's in our program now. I don't care what happened before.
-(Duane) He's a great worker, extraordinary habits, good communicator, he's a special guy delivering the message about what we may be getting.
-(Rental?) I don't know. Just trying to get to Wednesday. We'll see what happens. His excitement coming here, ready to take advantage of this opportunity, he won't let this go by. We'll see what happens in the long haul.
-Everything we talked about was forward thinking & being on a team he was excited about. He received a lot of information from Duane that this would be a fun place. Excited & positive about it. What more can I ask for?
-(Agree not to franchise him?) Yeah, part of the negotiation.

Clowney says he started having conversations with Duane Brown a month ago about coming to Seattle.

Clowney said he’s been talking to Duane Brown for a while and said he first asked him about Seattle about a month ago. Duane said “you need to come play with us. You’ll love it here.” Clowney then said he’d try to look into it and see if he could find a way up here.

Jadeveon Clowney said former Texans teammate Duane Brown played a big role in him seeking a trade to the #Seahawks.

Clowney on Seattle: “You have great weather and fan support. It’s not hot like Houston”

Jadeveon Clowney on what he remembers most about playing in Seattle: "This fanbase - this fanbase is probably the craziest I've ever played in front of. Now I'm glad I get to be on the opposite side...I'm looking forward to being a part of that."

Clowney says looking forward to playing in a 4-3 defense and just going forward. Says had to drop in coverage a lot in Houston.

Jadeveon Clowney is excited to be back as a 4-3 DE and get after the quarterback. He plans on spending much less time in coverage with the #Seahawks

“In a 4, you are going forward. When you are going forward, you aren’t thinking” you just go."

Jadevon Clowney on Seattle's system:

"I can get back to going vertical, not dropping. Just really putting my head down and grinding. When you're going forward you don't think about a lot. So that's the best thing about this defense."

-(Work ethic?) I watched him come out of college. That's just a young player to me. We'll see what happens. He's in our program now. I don't care what happened before.

This is what players like Cecil Shorts have been saying. Clowney had issues his rookie year with work ethic but not anymore. But O'Brien never adjusted.

Will Carroll be able to get longevity out of Clowney? That’s been the concern and big question around him.

At this point it's a 1 year rental at $8 million that if he leaves he gets the 3rd rounder back next year.

But will be interesting to see his extension.

Yup.

Frank Clark posted 13 sacks and 10 TFL's last year for SEA...
Ansah posted 12 & 15 for DET the last year he was reasonably healthy

Clowney is thought to be so much more talented than these guys & he will be the focal point on that front 7, so he's gonna have to post at a minumum what those guys put up.

We will see. I see him finally breaking the double digit sack barrier, but Seattle's defense not being all that much better than they were last year.

Actually he got word we were trying to trade him to Miami for peanuts. It wasn't until later BO'b realized he needed a LT.

Supposedly we had a deal in place all Clowney had to do was sign his tender & we'd have got two thirds. Thankfully Clowney was adamant about not going to Miami.

I thought it was gonna be clowney and high picks for tunsil

Before that. When Clowney first said he wasn't going to play after the third preseason game. At that time O'Brien was still saying Kalil was going to start & barking at reporters.

Tunsil got thrown in the conversation after that.

Since 2016 - Clowney has missed a total of 3 regular season games. Now multiply that number by 8 and that'll give you the total for games Watt has missed in the same time period.

In Clowney’s first five years in the NFL he has missed 18 games. Take that number and multiply by 0 and that is how many games Watt missed in his first 5 years in the NFL.

What number did you get? Hint - the number is in the question. 0.

Don’t you ever compare a great HOFer like Watt to someone like Clowney trying to make a name for himself. GTFO with that nonsense.

Is it possible our run defense won't be good this year?

Tweet from @LandryLocker: #Texans run defense rank in O’Brien’s 5 years:

2014: 10th (Watt led league w/29
2015: 11th (Mercilus 6th w/19)
2016: 11th (Clowney led league w/16)
2017: 12th (Clowney 2nd in league w/21)
2018: 4th (Watt 5th w/19, Clowney 11th w/16)

Clowney was HUGE part of run D last 3 years.

Big topic on 610 today. I think the lunch pail crew and Mercilus keep us in top half or better. Naybe we were so good at stopping the run because it was easier to throw a 5 yard gain with our cushions so people did not run as much or try as long. Indeed I expect a dip, but I think the key is more will the offense climb this year as I expect the defense to dip some. Say the offense gets to 6 or so, and defense slips to 8 or so, that is still a team to go to battle with. I still say the identity of the team is changing, moving from Watt and the defense to DW4 and the offense. Scary I know, but one is starting to decline and DW4 should just be getting started. Two wildcards for me are QB and OC changes. Does Time Kelley call the plays and do a good job, and does Tater get Dw4 coached up to take what is given and still get his shots in.

If the questions is "Will our run defense be AS good" I'd say definitely not.

I think it'll still be good...just not great

And now watt is gonna hit 30 and see double and triple teams again. I hope he holds up.

Seth Payne said on the radio this morning that Clowney faced more double teams than J.J. did last season.

If Someone else doesn’t step up into a legit force it could get ugly.

But they have some guys with potential.

Come on Monday.

All I care about his OB when its nutt cutting time. Or when we need to call timeout. Or if he knows what his job is at any given moment.

The offense looks good on paper. Need to see it consistently.

The defense will drop off, and we will still suffer from not getting pressure on qbs. Gotta realize we are playing real offenses this year. Dont care where defense ranks. They ain't gonna be top 10. But can they get the stop when it matters. If they are winded in 4th then they will fail.

People are still picking indi to win the division for a reason.

Yeah clowney was a sexy NT. Never get due credit for dirty work done. If no one steps up, expect watt to be normal. I mean come on, with watt and clowney on the field none of the other guys made noise.

Early this morning I was looking at collection of predictions, division winners, wildcards, superbowl. At least a third still had colts winning division but texans as a wild card. Was thinking maybe some of these before luck retired. Then heard McClain say dame on loop. He was amazed how many people still picking colts to win division with luck retired.

That's all I got, cant find what i was looking at earlier.

The only reason that happened was b/c JJ was largely kept outside where it’s hard to get doubled while Clowney floated a lot from the edge to the middle....which if you’re being real, makes Clowney look a little worse considering he got the advantage of being the backside rusher to most right handed qbs and also got to pick his matchups against slower guards.

Clowney is a good player running a 4.5 at 6'5 255 lbs but he doesn't have what Terrell Suggs at 6'3 260 lbs running a 4.84 forty has . I guess it's first step and bend but one has 132 career sacks and the other might get half that . I know I know he's a great run stopper in a passing league which puts value on the sack .

Clowney has 18.5 sacks the last two years, he'll probably get more than 66 for his career though probably not more than suggs
