2019 Texans free agency

Gonna watch some film on him now. I hope they bring him in if he’s as good in blocking as some say...

The biggest value would come in removing Ryan Griffin from the team. Fells is a Y TE and a different type of player than Griffin but I wouldn’t see them carrying 4 TEs and I definitely don’t see them keeping Griffin ahead of our promising young TEs from last draft.

Imagine having someone who knows how to block instead of Ryan Griffin...

I doubt it is about Davenport. Instead, I think their reluctance (if this story is accurate) to sign Penn and promise him a starting gig is about the likelihood they will draft an OT in the 1st or 2nd round.

Tell him he's the starter and draft a guy. Let Penn, Draft pick, Henderson fight it out for the two OT spots

Grif got more playing time because the coaches trusted him not to blow assignments.

It's the only explanation.

We actually have talent at te. Will he use it idk?

Ol is a dumpster fire.

Our TEs are talented receivers but (so far) have not been good blockers. So if we want to use them O'Brien probably has to build a much better OL.

Fells is a decent sign. Finally got someone for offense! Good blocker, and is enough of a two way threat to not totally tip off the play. Hopefully this spells the end of the Ryan Griffin tenure here in Houston.

I'd like Penn way over the kid from Buffalo who is a camp body to me. Penn is the best option in a very poor market right now. And yes I'm worried about age and the foot injury. But if he could play E. Salaam to a 2019 rookie's Duane Brown, he could be very valuable in the short term.

But personally, I wouldn't promise him a starting spot. I'd just say look, we'll have a highly drafted rookie here and we've got two existing journeyman here. You'll certainly get your chance to compete and possibly start part or even all of the season, but we plan to put the best two guys out there every week and your spot, like everyone else's is earned, and not granted. If you are not one of the two at the end of camp or later in the year, we expect you to be a good teammate and help out in the locker room, provide veteran leadership and backup the starters.

If he's like naw man, I want to be guaranteed to start, then it's sorry but don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Texans should sign both LT Penn and RT Mills then Draft a couple OLmen make all compete.

In his lone season in Cleveland, Fells appeared in all 16 games, but played on just 38.5% of the Browns’ offensive snaps and managed only 11 receptions. While he wasn’t given many opportunities behind starting tight end David Njoku, Fells was effective when targeted. Among tight ends with fewer than 25 catches, Fells finished third in Football Outsiders’ DVOA, meaning he was productive on a per-play basis.

While Fells has historically been praised as a blocking tight end, 2018 wasn’t a banner year for him in that regard, at least according to Pro Football Focus. PFF assigned Fells a 72.9 pass-blocking grade, which put him near the middle of the pack among his position group, but a 55.9 grade in the run game, a mark which ranked near the bottom of the league.

Freakin sad.

Sign him, bring him in and draft a guy. Start Penn and let him play so the new guy can learn under Penn until as CnD has said, Penn gets hurt again or Penn's play suffers because of the Lisfranc.

Geez this isn't brain surgery.

Davenport shouldn't be blocking any OL help. If he is then everybody in the Texans org should be fired.

Between his Lisfranc and severe groin tear injuries, he doesn't need to get injured any more to keep his downward spiral going. His 2018 PFF rating in the 4 games he managed to played was 47. Pushing off 315 lbs with a Lisfranc each and every play is not going to have him (or his groin) get better.

Maybe I have this take because I don't normally do brain surgery. :mcnugget:

Doc you have to understand some of us are very desperate right now.

Pretty much. I know some signings haven’t worked but Joseph was a big fish at the time. Manning was a nice piece too.

Sometimes you have to spend on FA to make a jump if you aren’t the patriots.

Texans also signed Miller, Colvin, Fulton, Jeff Allen and Osweiler as free agents under O'Brien. The problem is more that they've spent badly.

The guys who have turned out well are usually our own free agents we extend (like Hopkins, Mercilus, McKinney, Watt)

Yes as I said some signings haven’t worked out but the conversation I jumped in on was about not spending at all.

Hence why I mentioned that at times even the best teams go out and spend money in free agency.

But you are right in that it is more about who they are spending the money on rather than that they are spending money at all.

Agreed at times they need to go out in FA. They couldn't sign the big multi year deals this year (aside from hopefully Clowney) but I wish they would find more value guys. I suppose the new TE is not bad

I was discussing with a friend what a team needs to be successful. These are what I came up with and if the Texans have it. What did I miss?

Franchise QB check
Line Controlling OL nope
Bell Cow RB nope
Dominate WR check
Weapon at TE nope

Playmaker FS check
Shutdown CB nope
Run Stuffer NT nope
Dominate Pass Rush check
Coverage LB with Speed nope

Edit. Consistent K game check

If they can get 3 or 4 games out of Penn while a rookie is learning the ropes I would consider that a win and Penn could be a lockerroom presence in the OL room that was lacking last yr.

What I really hope they do is offer Miami who is starting their rebuild a 2019 1st and a 2020 2nd for Tunsil.

meh, it's a MB, probably not as good as this one. His opinion means squat... unless it'a also yours. And opinions all smell the same

He knows somebody on the inside.

He called this offseason like he was reading a playbook before the offseason even started.

Disagree on run stuffer NT. DJ Reader is one of the best in the business as our run defense has shown since he’s arrived.

Coverage LB with speed I think is Dylan Cole. He flashed as a rookie and was injured most of last season. Cunningham also has good speed but the coaches ask him to do more than he’s capable. Scheme weakness imo. Mckinney was the liability before they added Cunningham and put him in position to try and cover people like Gronk.

I could get behind Tunsil. He had a very good 2018 after a very bad 2017. But in 2016, he played LG, then in 2017 was placed in his natural position at LT. I hope and believe that his stinky 2017 was essentially the equivalent of a rookie year at LT.

We also have weapons at Tight end. Both Jordans are pretty darn good. They're not used right.

That what I was hoping since OB has little if anything to do with the salary cap.

Obrien is involved in free agency and trades which affect and are constrained by the salary cap. If he's not involved in knowing how much flexibility they have and how much they can create by cuts/trades, then he should be.
