Brock Osweiler: “I don’t feel like a marked man.” But Broncos “want to kill him”

Former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler says leaving Denver was “the hardest decision of my life”

Monday night’s game against Houston has been circled on the calendars of several Broncos defenders since the schedule was released in April. It doesn’t take much motivation for this proud defense.

But Denver is riding a two-game losing streak into a prime-time contest with many challenging the defense’s status as an elite group. For added incentive, the game marks the return to Denver for quarterback Brock Osweiler, who turned down a chance to lead the Broncos after quarterback Peyton Manning’s retirement. Osweiler instead chose the riches offered him by the Texans.

“He definitely left us for a reason,” linebacker Todd Davis said. “So I’m sure he’ll have some extra oomph coming in. And I’m sure we will, too. There will be some extra oomph from everybody.”

There’s no animosity toward the 25-year-old quarterback for leaving the defending Super Bowl champions. But the Broncos are salivating at the thought of getting after a former teammate who caught many by surprise when he signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Texans on March 9.

“I can completely understand why everybody was extremely surprised and shocked at the time,” said Osweiler, who led the Broncos to a 5-2 record in his seven starts last season. “It was the hardest decision of my life.”

For the better part of four years, Osweiler ran the Broncos’ scout team against an emerging defense that learned his tendencies and intercepted his passes. They know him. Now they can’t wait to make plays against him.

Broncos pass rushers couldn’t hide their smiles this week when asked about Osweiler’s tendency to hold onto the ball in the pocket. That’s a big mistake going against Von Miller, Shane Ray, Derek Wolfe and the rest of the Broncos’ sack-hungry defenders. Osweiler has been sacked 12 times this season.

“Nobody has any ill will toward Brock, but at the same time it’s a competition and we want to shut him down,” Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall said. “Just because it’s Brock, we know Brock. He came from here, and we want to kill him. That’s just what we want to do.”

The taste of a reputation tarnished by two sluggish performances in five days has the Broncos’ defense eager to get back to its brand of football. The Broncos sacked opponents 17 times over their first four games, but only twice in each of the past two games.

Playing a quarterback with shaky pocket presence might be one of the reasons for the smiles by the Broncos defenders.

“Tendencies don’t typically change. They just try to disguise them. But you are who you are, and you play how you play,” Ray said. “Different offense, different guys to throw the ball to, but quarterbacking don’t change. We just know him. I don’t have anything against Brock. Hopefully he’ll fall down easy for me.”

The defensive secondary also wants in on this. Cornerback Chris Harris noted Osweiler’s gunslinger mentality this season. Osweiler has thrown eight interceptions, tied for second worst in the NFL, which means there likely will be plenty of opportunities to make a play on the ball. Osweiler has struggled with intermediate routes, thrown 11-20 yards down field, completing just 47.9 percent, with two touchdown passes and five interceptions on 48 attempts.

Osweiler said it was the quarterback-friendly system run by Texans coach Bill O’Brien that played a part in him signing with Houston. He said being benched by Broncos coach Gary Kubiak in the Broncos’ regular season finale last season was frustrating, but had nothing to do with his decision to leave.

Another big factor in Osweiler’s decision to leave Denver was money. The Broncos were interested in retaining Osweiler but not giving him the huge deal Houston dangled. The Broncos spent much of the month after winning Super Bowl 50 and Osweiler’s departure waiting for Manning’s retirement decision.

“Denver had the opportunity to extend an offer,” Osweiler said. “In fact, they had a great, very long period of time to extend an offer.”
Osweiler faces the perils of his decision Monday night against a swarming Denver defense. The Broncos want to prove that it was the wrong choice.

“I don’t feel like a marked man, whether that’s how they feel or not,” Osweiler said. “I have nothing but love and respect for everybody in that organization, and especially the players.”

A significant portion of the crowd in Denver will boo Osweiler. And Broncos defenders will have “some extra oomph” as they look to make plays and punish him.

They don’t hate him, but it may seem like it come Monday night.

IMO heat is on Denver as they are expected to beat Houston. I and most others had this penciled in as a loss preseason. Os will have to poop his britches to be taken out of game so go have fun, each player do what he is supposed with no heroics using solid blocking and tackling. If we lose we are in first place and looking at picking up three wins. IF we win..we better make sure the team doesn't start looking for those letter jackets; confidence will be at an all time high this year.

I think Texas A&M has opportunity to upset #1 machine Alabama tomorrow; two days later Texans have same opportunity to shake up NFL. 'Bama and the Bronks could be looking for excuses soon.

This time is the opportunity which gives us the best chance of beating the Broncos..............their run game lately has been so close to life support that, if Kubiak wasn't coming off the Injury Report himself, you would probably be seeing him carrying the ball Monday night.

I agree and we need to come out first minute ready to play and get down the field. I want to see better game plan Monday.

I don't get it.

...but it's probably just me.
You've got to be familiar with the lyrics to get it..........this should give you better context.:
:

How It's Going to Be
Third Eye Blind
I'm only pretty sure
that I can't take anymore
Before you take a swing
I wonder what are we fighting for
When I say out loud
I want to get out of this
I wonder is there anything
I'm going to miss
I wonder how it's going to be
When you don't know me
How's it going to be
When you're sure I'm not there
How's it going to be
When there's no one there to talk to
Between you and me
Cause I don't care
How's it going to be
How's it going to be
Where we used to laugh
There's a shouting match
Sharp as a thumbnail scratch
A silence I can't ignore
Like the hammock by the
Doorway we spent time in swings empty
Don't see lightning like last fall
When it was always about to hit me
I wonder how's it going to be
When it goes down
How's it going to be
When you're not around
How's it going to be

I don't get it.

...but it's probably just me.

You're probably too emotionally invested.

It doesn't matter how right or wrong the media got the story. This thing just plays on the perception.

Imagine how that perception will flip if Osweiler is able to do what he's being paid to do... including a win Monday. Imagine if we're winning the AFCSouth every year for the next four to six years & we beat them every year we play them, maybe three or four times over the next four to six years. Imagine we beat them a couple of times in the playoffs.

But it all depends on Brock & Monday would be a good day to start.

Guess this is a breakup song, huh.

Makes a bit more sense seeing the lyrics.

Too much drama.

A Shakespearean Drama to be sure!

Why Brock Osweiler spurned Denver to sign with Houston

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Sticks and stones are fine. Whatever.

Signing bonuses, guaranteed money and the chase of the almighty dollar? Business is business.

But when sifting through quarterback Brock Osweiler’s departure from the Denver Broncos to greener financial pastures with the Houston Texans, it’s the words, spoken and unspoken, that make the decision sting.

“It is what it is, man,” Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. said. “Everybody likes Brock, but guys do what they think is best; they go to whatever situation they think is best. Those are personal decisions. Maybe he didn’t like what it was going to be here and the expectations and all that.”

Osweiler, who signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Texans in March, returns to Denver for the first time Monday night since leaving in free agency. Osweiler was a second-round draft pick in 2012, the same year the Broncos signed Peyton Manning in free agency.

Osweiler was the heir apparent, the one who was groomed to take over for Manning. And then he left, just like that, weeks after the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 victory and days after Manning retired.

And then the words came, the ones that are still ringing in many ears around the Broncos’ complex. When Osweiler was introduced by the Texans in March, he was asked why he left Denver.

"I'm very thankful, I'm very appreciative for everything that the Denver Broncos organization has done for me,” he said. “However, in saying that, at this point in time in my career, I feel like the Houston Texans give me the best opportunity to be successful.”

Those words – “the best opportunity to be successful” -- left a mark. After all, the Broncos won four division titles and 50 regular-season games in Osweiler’s four seasons. They also made two Super Bowl trips and won one Lombardi Trophy.

“We didn’t take leaving personally,” Harris said. “That’s the league.”

But the Texans giving Osweiler a better opportunity to be successful?

“Yeah, we probably did take that personally,” Harris said.

Broncos executive vice president of football operations and general manager John Elway had his own reaction after Osweiler left. He said the team would continue to succeed “with players who want to be Denver Broncos and want to be here.”

Osweiler also was a no-show for Manning’s retirement news conference and the Broncos’ White House trip and ring ceremony to celebrate the Super Bowl.

He explained those absences last week. A vacation -- “my only vacation with my family” -- kept him away from Manning’s presser. And the Texans’ OTAs, and being with his new team, were a bigger priority than the White House and ring ceremony.

“We didn’t really hang out off the field or anything,” Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib said. “So, I don’t really know how he feels and all that. I don’t know if he has hard feelings about business or not. Everybody saw what he said, but everybody says things when they sign in the new place.”

Brock Osweiler was complimentary of Broncos coach Gary Kubiak's offense this week but said he believed Bill O'Brien's system in Houston was a better fit. Charles LeClaire/USA Today
Osweiler also explained what he meant by his words -- “the best opportunity to be successful” – last week. He said he was referring to Bill O’Brien’s offense, which he liked more than what Gary Kubiak and the Broncos run.

“There were a number of things that went into this decision,” Osweiler said. “It wasn’t a decision that was made overnight; it was a decision that took up weeks post-Super Bowl, as we were heading into free agency. I don’t know if that was the correct thing for me to say because, bottom line, there’s so many things that went into it.

“I feel like I had great success playing in [Kubiak’s] system, and I really enjoyed playing in that system. But what Coach O’Brien is doing down here in Houston, at the time when I was doing my research on the Texans, it seemed like a phenomenal opportunity as a quarterback to play in a system like this.”

There was also the matter of the 2015 regular-season finale. The Broncos were 5-2 in games Osweiler started for the injured Manning last season.

But with Manning healthy enough to return in the regular season’s final week, Kubiak made the move early in the third quarter against the San Diego Chargers. Osweiler had thrown for 232 yards, but the Broncos also had five turnovers and needed to win to secure home-field advantage for the postseason.

With 8 minutes, 18 seconds left in the third quarter, Manning went back in the lineup and stayed there for the Super Bowl run. Many in and around the team said Osweiler and his family, in the stands as the move was made, were upset. Many with the Broncos have said Osweiler’s representatives told him at that time the best thing to do in free agency was to find an opportunity elsewhere.

Osweiler said being pulled had nothing to do with him leaving.

“It didn’t weigh in whatsoever," he said last week. “At the end of the day, I really do have nothing but respect for Coach Kubiak and how he runs that team.

“Any competitor would be frustrated in that moment … but it certainly made sense what Coach Kubiak did for the playoff run. I got replaced by Peyton Manning. … I think we all know who is going to play in the game.”

Moving On
Brock Osweiler's statistics when filling in as the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback last season, compared to this season as the Houston Texans' starter.

Year Team Games Comp% Yards TD INT QBR
2015 Broncos 8 61.8 1,967 10 6 86.4
2016 Texans 6 59.0 1,402 8 8 74.1

Still, at league meetings in March, Texans owner Bob McNair said Osweiler told him he was looking for a fresh start.

“And then of course he had played behind Peyton [Manning] and with John Elway there, their shadows were quite large,” McNair said then. “He was still going to be under that and compared to them. He has a chance to be a real hero in Houston. And we’ve got a good ballclub, so I think things entered into it.”

Osweiler has tried to rebuild bridges. He said he spoke to Elway when both were vacationing in Idaho this summer. Osweiler also reached out to Kubiak last week after he spent a night in the hospital.

Still, the echo of “the best opportunity to be successful” continues to bounce around the Broncos’ locker room.

“Nobody has any ill will toward Brock,” Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall said. “But at the same time, it’s a competition and we want to shut him down. He came from here and we want to kill him. That’s just what we want to do."

Osweiler said: “I can completely understand why everybody was completely surprised and shocked at the time. But, bottom line, it was an extremely difficult decision, and at the end of the day, it was a decision that was made based on what I thought was best for my family and myself.”

I never expected Texas A&M to beat Alabama. I am not sure there is any team I expect to beat them. However if there is one team that may give Alabama trouble it may well be the Auburn Tigers. Auburn at this time is no joke.

As far as our Texans go, the story will be how Trevor Siemian and the Broncos whitewashed our Texans. It will be a blowout by the Broncos and the main story will be how they brutalized Brock Osweiler and how poorly Brock played. Brock will throw three picks and be sacked a ton of times because he will not handle the pressure like he should.

Trevor Siemian will throw three touchdowns and run for another. Two of Brocks three picks will lead to Broncos touchdowns.

The Texans as a whole will do what they do best. Get manhandled in a nationally televised game!

Final Score Texans 0 @ Broncos 38

My buddy is a big UCLA fan, so he watches a ton of PAC-12. He also knows his football. I asked him about Osweiller. He told me, "He's one of those guys, no matter how much time is left, he tends to bring his team back. " I finally see what he's talking about.

Do you know that ASU went 6-7 the year Osweiler became the starter?
:bat:

So that's all on Brock or the entire team?

Osweiler spent just three years in Tempe, electing to declare for the NFL Draft after just one year as a starter in 2011. That season was a big one however, as he became the first ASU player to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season and also set school records for completions and completion percentage.

Well, not to rain on your parade or the Texans, because I see the rays of hope too... but, the throw to Strong was underthrown. Jaelen had to slow down for the ball which gave the defender a chance to catch up and contest the play. That catch was completely due to Strong, not to Osweiler. A "perfect" pass on that play would have been a TD.

Again, this is more a point of information, not saying Oz sucks. The first half was terrible and I was on the verge of just throwing in the towel, but then the 4th quarter happened. Like I said, glimmers of hope do exist! WooHoo! Go TEXANS!!!!

First half playcalling was atrocious, second half playcalling was creative. They were able to get Miller to the outside which they have sorely needed, and they even ran a successful screen pass.

At this point, OBrien should let Oz call the plays. Or, Oz could just shoot the bird at Obrien from the huddle and call the play he wants.

That particular pass we have to give credit to both Strong (for making the adjustment) (we've seen this happen a lot starting from the high school level all the way to the pros) and Brock for throwing it for one and two for trusting his receiver to make a play.

hahaha one of these days we will see a complete game from our offense. Hopefully it will be tonight against the Broncos.

Lets go Texans

Well...I've watched a lot of football in my life. I have seen terrible qb play ( Mark Malone, Craig Whelihan, Bubby Brister, etc )...I really hate to say it but I think Oz is just as garbage as the names above. ****.

That number dials straight to the Norg family reunion.

It'll get easier next week. Then we'll have the bye. I hope this coach stops trying to get too much out of this QB & start coaching to his strength. Start coaching towards Nuk's strength & all the other offensive weapons.

hopefully we can win 12 or 13 games, get an off week, then play a Wildcard team & hopefully get out of the divisional round.

the focus should be on getting better each week & we'll check in the playoffs if we've made any progress.
