Ryan Mallett

I think he's suggesting that when your defense gets beat it could use an opportunity to get its collective crap together and when the offense doesn't at the very least do better than a three and out then sending that defense back out there right away doesn't help.

That quarter was IMO just a perfect example of What happens when the O and the D **** the bed at the exact same time.

At least someone gets it....

I'll speak slower.

I don't agree with anyone who thinks Fitzpatrick gives us the best chance to win now.

If O'Brien thinks the offense will progress faster with Fitzpatrick it makes sense.

Those are not contradictory statements.

Type slower next time to allow your brain to catch up to your fingers. Might help you in the long run.

Agree with every word.
I, too, see more similarities than differences.

I still hold hope that when this roster knows this offense as well as they knew the previous one, we will be a very tough out... for anybody.

Now there are two ways of looking at similarities. One is that they are both bad. The other is that they are both good. I'll go with the latter. While it might not have been a perfect storm of events, it was a pretty bad set of circumstances which conspired to produce last seasons debacle.

I have indicated several times I don't think we are nearly as bad last year as our record indicated nor are we that different this year. But we'll see.

Anyone still remotely believe Mallet would be any worse than this?

Strangely, some will keep defending Fitzpatrick.

Because of where I live, I haven't been able to see the Texans on TV much this year. I did watch most of the game tonight, and I can plainly see that Fitzpatrick is not very good. His arm is not very strong and he doesn't make good decisions. For the life of me, I don't understand why they don't give Mallett a chance. Anybody can see that Fitz is not the future of this team. Not that Mallett or Savage is, but jeez, at least try something else.

I would start Ryan Mallett at Tennessee next Sunday and for the rest of the season. Let's see what he can do. If he struggles then we can draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2015 draft.

I think the Fitzy defenders are going to say it is not his fault for all the mental lapses. I think Ob is not going to make a switch until we are out of contention. I would like him to switch, but don't think it will happen.

We need to see what Ryan Mallett can do. We already know what Ryan Fitzpatrick can do and it pretty much sucks. It's doubtful that Mallett would play any worse than this. Odds are Mallett would play much better and if not then so be it. We go into the 2015 draft with a quarterback need high on our priority list, whether it be free agency or a first-round pick. Or both. Either way I do not want Fitzpatrick back next season.

Fans wanted this exact same thing with keenum last year citing "he'll give us a spark!" You guys are not getting it. This overall team just isn't good. Doesnt matter who we have back there.

At 3-4 we are pretty much on the brink of being out of contention because the Bengals are 3-2-1 and the Steelers and Bills are 4-3. Just too many teams to leap frog for that final wild card spot. If we start Ryan Mallett next Sunday at Tennessee, Bill O'Brien would be saying to the fan base that we haven't given up yet and are going to give it one last shot. Who knows, we could ride a little winning streak with Ryan Mallett and have that Patriots magic rub off on his. We'll be here a month from now tied for the final wild-card spot.

Lol, the "odds" say the direct opposite.

We'd be 7-0 or 6-1 right now with just a decent quarterback. Not 3-4.

I would start mallet against Philly

BOb will prob start mallet after the bye

and once we lose a couple more games I would start savage the last 3 weeks when we are out of contention :kitten:

Ryan Fitzpatrick is a turnover machine. Yeah he can play okay at times when we fall behind by two scores or more. By then it's too late to complete a comeback. Another one score loss. Had we recovered that onside kick I bet Fitzpatrick would have thrown his 8th INT or fumbled for the what, 3rd time this year?

Like i posed to someone in the game thread...how's that decent qb play working out for ATL and now the saints?

The team is not good...stop o'ding on the kool-aid
The Falcons and Saints don't have J.J. Watt. Playing at an MVP type of level. The defensive player of the year for sure. Well now I doubt it with a 3-4 losing record. The Texans could have won these past three games with a good quarterback. What part of that can't you comprehend? Ryan Fitzpatrick is pathetic.

I agree that Fitzpatrick is costing this team games. I am just not sure that Mallett or Savage are going to be any better. I think Mallet has the arm strength but not the talent between his ears. And Savage looked terrible when he got more playing time. My guess is that the starting QB next year is not on the roster right now. I'm happy to have Mallett and / or Savage get some playing time and find out though.

Lol...:swatter: he's just 1 guy in a team of 53.

So if Bob and Rick Smith would have signed Peyton Manning when he wanted to come to Houston instead of staying loyal to their man in Schaub the Texans would still be 3-4?

As terrible as Fitz is, he is not the only reason the Texans lost tonight.

Might as well see what Mallet can do though. There is nothing Fitz can do to help this team.

The difference is that ATL/NO know that if they can correct their other issues, they have a QB that they can depend on. Here, even if we fix the other problems on the team, we already know Fitzpatrick isn't our ultimate QB solution.

I rather see what we have in Mallet and how badly we need to draft a QB, than watch Fitz play another down. Just saying...

#1, No evidence that he was coming....

#2, he's an all time great...hardly on par with any option we had access to last year

#3, even he would need some help to win games....

I rather see what we have in Mallet and how badly we need to draft a QB, than watch Fitz play another down. Just saying...

That's different than saying mallet is pretty much guaranteed to play better...which is what many are saying in here....in a roundabout way. Many Redskin fans were starting to tnink like you guys after watching RG3 pretty much stink it up for a year and a half. 5 games into the season, they're ready for him to come back b/c cousins has been worse after an initial decent little showing.

Im not defending Fitz...im just saying what good does it do to put a great engine in your car when you've got no tires to drive on?

True, because the Texans had no interest in signing him despite him openly saying the Texans were at the top of his list. That was my mostly my point.

Just about every team had interest and who cares what he said...did he choose to visit us like he did SF, denver and Tenn? Nope. And please, explain to me how you definitively know that kubiak and co. Said "nope, i dont want him". You cant b/c You're just speculating....unless you're rick smith, gary kubiak and/or mcnair. And have 1st hand knowledge of the conversations on kirby.

Well you mean nothing except a high draft pick, because he is definately helping with that. Why can't we suck when there are some decent QB's available in the draft. Wondering if we will ever have a franchise QB in Houston.

I really don't consider myself a Fitzpatrick defender, but damn... he played well. I didn't like his decision to tuck & run it when we were out of timeouts. But other than that... I blame the play calling.

For whatever reason, whenever we found something that was working we went away from it. Runs to the right look good, let's run the next three plays to the left. DeAndre is catching everything, let's force a couple to Dre... heck, that don't look too bad, let's throw it to a TE.

Then we come out in the 2nd half & we're going to do exactly what they expect us to do... they overload the box, but we still try to run right at it.

Then when you look at the plays they score on... for whatever reason they know they have red zone issues & they come up with something no one has ever seen & we forget how to contain, how to cover, how to jam...

Gruden said he didn't understand the low percentage throw Ben made to the end zone instead of running out the clock... we'll it was that aggressive attitude that turned the game for them. We get a turnover, score a field goal... they build confidence. They get a turnover, attack the end zone, score a TD & mentally tear us apart.

You can wish for Mallett all you want, but until we stop coaching scared, it won't make any difference.

We're not better than the Colts, the Steelers, or even the Browns. Coaching like we are... we'll come up short every time. 3 points, 7, next time might be 30. The guys are out there leaving it all on the field, it's time OB did the same.

Fine the team sucks. Part of that is the QB. It unlike other positions is one we have untested players who may be better. You're fighting so hard to say the team sucks that your QB argument makes no sense.

You put Brees/Ryan on this team and a healthy Clowney and you have a playoff team. IMHO

Rick Smith should be out on the practice field tomorrow looking ay LB's that can cover. I really wanted Christian Jones in last yrs draft. Went to Chicago as a FA and is doing well covering RB's/TE's. Oh well, guess he wasn't Texan worthy.

I certainly didn't realize how bad Morris injury would hurt the secondary.

Mallett's problem is he's got slow feet and that's not a good combination with an avg OL.

And you're fighting so hard to pin it all on fitz, you're oblivious to the rest of the suck..so we're in the same boat.

Ryan is dealing with many of the same team issues...and getting alot of the same results..

I'm Going to have to say that Newton has played up to his 2013 season par. He was continually getting beat. I was starting to get on his side but the old habits starting showing up again.

This among other problems reared their ugly head. Once you hit the Texans with a round house they don't seem to be able to recover. Most teams take the hit, clinch, and then regroup. I am frustrated with the play they have been exhibiting.

So much potential, so wasted!

So if Bob and Rick Smith would have signed Peyton Manning when he wanted to come to Houston instead of staying loyal to their man in Schaub the Texans would still be 3-4?

Don't put that one on Smith. McNair yes for siding with the coach in that dispute, but Smith wanted Manning. At least that's what the rumors say. It could be his one good decision.

Fitzpatrick costs this team. You can't put the blame on his shoulder's alone, but his failure to mount a drive with 3 minutes left in the 1st half gave the Steelers the opportunity. If he puts together a decent drive and either gets us points or at least moves the ball enough and burns some clock then Pittsburgh doesn't have the points explosion. His decisions when under pressure don't always lead to turnovers, but they never result in positives for the Texans.

He's good enough to help the Texans go 8-8 at the best. I'm sure the other QBs on the roster aren't necessarily better, but they can't be that much worse. Every other QB in the league (well, not all of them) would have taken advantage of Brice McCain trying to cover Andre.

Gruden made a point about how smart Fitzpatrick was and the fact that he has started for so many teams as some kind of proof of that. I think the fact that he has started for 5 different teams means he isn't a good QB and would be better served as a backup. Name me one good QB that has played on that many teams.

The coaching left a lot to be desired. But 2 of the 3 biggest plays of the game were on Fitz. The int and missing AJ on the TD pass were huge plays. (Foster's fumble was the other play.)

Man the defense could use a LB or 2 that could cover. The overall team speed is atrocious.

And you're fighting so hard to pin it all on fitz, you're oblivious to the rest of the suck..so we're in the same boat.

Sorry, nope. Name the other positions we have backups who are potentially better than the starters. Maybe LG. Name the other positions with critical draft decisions against players not getting substantial playing time. Not the same boat at all.

I've been saying for a while now that Ryan Fitzpatrick is probably the 3rd...maybe even the 2nd best quarterback to ever play the game.

I mean, the stats are all there. His comeback wins are second to none. He's very smart, too.

I know it must be frustrating for him to come into Houston and expect a good football team around him, only to be let down by the players and coaches. But let's face it, Fitzpatrick, if he only had a little more support from this regime we would probably be 10-1 right now.

All this talk about Mallett just pisses me off...and I wouldn't be surprised if it pisses of Fitzpatrick, as well. Nobody deserves that...especially a future Hall of Famer.

C'mon guys; let's be right about this and not put the blame on our quarterback.

The Bolded and underlines is key to me.

They hardly ever lead to positives, so teams can pin their ears back and come at him all game long not ever really fearing that one short quick read that will tear them up play after play.

Fitz will just hold it and throw it away or throw a poor pass or run it.

as much as I'd like to see Mallet, Dhop and Foster shouldn't have fumbles. Yeah, that Fitz interception was bad but our other guys need to step it up. There's a reason why he's not out there right now. His time is coming at this rate.

How can anyone defend Fitz anymore?

We don't run all the plays available because the mother****er CAN NOT throw a damn good ball. PERIOD.

The other players, the o line, he wasn't that bad, it wasn't just him.....I want to punch everyone who says this squarely in the face

Huh? I don't get what you're saying? So everyone played great besides Fitz? The Foster fumble was on Fitz? The Hopkins fumble was on Fitz? The defense's inability to cover Bell was on Fitz? Manning's muff was on Fitz? I'm on the Mallet train too, but let's not act like Fitz is losing these games on his own.

I guess you didn't see Manning botch a kickoff , Foster & Hopkins fumble , Cushing get beat badly and run away from , Demaris Johnson drop a critical 3rd down catch that hit him in the hands , Swearinger forget to cover a guy , Simon give away a first down with a stupid penalty or ..... Derek Newton play "Matador" all night.

Nope , that was all Fitz doing ....

You may punt now.

(Fitz does suck :polevault:)

Oh , be careful who you take a swing at ..... the bigger they are the harder they fall .... but that's IF you can knock the mother *@#*er down ....

He cant throw anything but short routes.
he doesn't challenge a defense
He only makes quick drops which gives the o line no damn time
Defenses stack the box because they KNOW he will not challenge them deep.

So yes it is pretty much all on Fitz.
