Week 6 Gameday Thread: New England, not your father's Patriots

welsh texan

You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one
Ok, so we haven’t been winning clean games of football but we have been winning.

This next week we travel to New England, we sit #4 in the nfl.com power rankings, which shows that in the realm of NFL media, we are there or thereabouts with some of the best teams in the league for how we’ve begun the season.

3rd overall pick, Drake Maye is slated to get his debut start at QB for a Patriots team who sit 1-4, after a surprise win vs the Bengals in week 1, followed by a 4 game losing streak, head coach Jerod Mayo is looking to kick start their season.

Travelling to Foxboro always brings back bad memories from that one time our team began to believe that they were one of the best in the league and got stomped on.

What do we need to look out for? Did the swap from Howard to Fisher at RT give any signs of improvement on the OL? Will we have anything more consistent in the running game? Can our D put up some stats against the rookie QB?

Texans have never won in Foxborough (0-7). Of course all 7 of those were coached by Belichick and 6 of the 7 had some guy named Brady at QB. Brissett the other, beat them 27-0.

Haven’t checked but the Texans should be favored. This can’t be one of those games like Carolina or Atlanta last year. Gotta take care of bidness.

As soon as I saw we were playing NE I immediately thought of the game at Carolina last year. We have to play clean ball and take everything seriously. Especially with Nico being day to day. Guys just need to line up and play sound ball.

The Texans defense is going to make Maye look bad.

The Texans were pretenders and got the light shone upon them. So the memories weren't that bad because they were to be expected.

Fortunately this Texans team aren't pretenders.

I hope.

I'm wondering if our DEs aren't racking up sacks because they have been corralling these mobile QBs. I'm starting to think not since when it's crucial to get pressure we're having to blitz. If Maye is going to have success it will be mostly on the move.

The backend is going to have to cover & confuse long enough for the pass rush to get home & they've got to get home.

Nicco is not day today. He is on IR for his recurrent hamstring.
I feel like in some ways this is positive, they are actually committing to holding him out for a period of time that will hopefully allow him to heal up, rather than rushing him back. Hope Hutchinson can step up to keep Slowick’s playbook open rather than requiring Dell & Diggs to change roles.

I see Hutchinson as Nico Lite. His recent showings have been good.

Point spread currently @ Texans by 7 which seems a lot. Turnovers could make or break that number.

I’ll feel better when Mixon comes back. Being down your clear top two weapons sucks donkey balls.

Nico was playing like the best WR in the league…better than Jefferson and anyone else.

Mixon had a brilliant opening game, then had an illegal tackle take him out for a month or so. Now Nico is out for a month…hopefully no more.

We have guys…but who is the deep threat?

It's a positive that it removes all temptations.

I dont know either, but I'm just glad WA got pressure on Allen in the endzone last week, forcing the punt that setup the winning FG.

Texans are favored by 7.

Houston Texans (-7) at New England Patriots (+7)

The Texans got plenty of trouble from a visiting Bills team that was without Khalil Shakir (ankle) and also lost Nico Collins following a long touchdown catch on which he sustained a hamstring injury. However, Houston managed to escape with a 23-20 win while holding Josh Allen to only nine completions on 30 attempts. The Patriots came close to securing their second victory against the visiting Dolphins but ultimately came up short by a 15-10 score. Rhamondre Stevenson began the game demoted to the No. 2 running back role but had taken the lead job back by game’s end. The Pats may get a jolt on offense this Sunday as they plan on starting rookie QB Drake Maye. The betting over under for this game opened at 38 points.

Houston Texans at New England Patriots: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 6 game

The Houston Texans (4-1) and New England Patriots (1-4) are trending in opposite directions and they'll meet in a Week 6 matchup Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

In the Stefon Diggs revenge game, the Texans receiver got the last laugh against his former team, the Buffalo Bills. Despite the Texans blowing a big lead, kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn saved the day to move Houston to its best start since 2012.
Nothing seems to be going right in New England. After opening the season with a win, the Patriots have now lost four in a row, the latest defeat coming at the hands of the short-handed Miami Dolphins. This season is looking like a waste, and the questions on if first-round pick Drake Maye gets to start will continue to build.

Carolina and our rookie HC, OC, & QB are all a year older and a year wiser since that
loss to the Panthers and Bryce Young which should give us some comfort.
But I know virtually nothing about the Pats rookie QB ?
For example does he have any mobility or is he primarily a pocket-passer ?

I saw some stats earlier this week that really highlighted to me that last season there were several ‘bad’ teams who played great defence and they accounted for a number of our losses.

As good as Stroud’s rookie season was, a few DC’s did manage to slow down our O and that took the pressure off their own bad QBs and allowed them to win. Who knows what combo of QB, OC, running game led to those issues. I’d bet we look back on the Vikings loss from this season in a similar vein once Darnold has his usual regression as the season wears on.

NE don’t look exceptional in any statistical category on D, and our Stroud led offence tends to perform well in those situations. So even if Maye does cause some miracle turn around in their woeful offensive rankings, this is the type of game we should win as long as nothing goes wrong.

I think when Autry joins the rotation those pressures from Anderson/Hunter will start turning into sacks. Autry will bring another level of pass rush from the interior. And also have the flexibility to kick outside to spell the edge rushers so they are more fresh late in the game to finish plays.

One more game and Ryans will have the DL he envisioned this offseason.

Hopefully Barnett's shoulder heals up before the end of the season.

I'm not particularly concerned about Lassiter's absence this Sunday.
Patriots are giving up tons of pressures and Texans D are getting tons of pressures so Maye is not going to get much time out there to pick apart our Secondary whoever Lassiter's replacement is.
That's not Tom Brady out there.

Fortunately this Texans team aren't pretenders.

Maye doesn’t stand a chance. Demeco single high safety, coverage 1 and 2 can be frustrating for opposing QBs. More complex than it sounds

A.R fluke game - 47%, 212yds, 2tds 1int
Caleb - 174yds, 2 ints
Darnold - 181yds, 4tds (more so coaching)
Trevor - 169yds, 2tds
Josh - 9/30, 131 yds, 1 td, 1 concussion

Notice the trend here. Besides week 1, more of a preseason game, opposing qbs have struggled to touch 200 yds in a pass friendly league. It helps having good lock down corners and a great D line who pressures the qb into throwing a bad ball incase a receiver gets separation. This defense will continue to get better. I still believe we will finish between 5-8 in total defense

Both teams will have to overcome key losses in the secondary.

Texans will likely be without Ward and Lassiter. I am particularly concerned about Lassiter being out. Who will step up at outside CB? Bullock played every snap on defense last week, encouraging to see the rookie continue to gain trust from DeMeco.

Patriots will be without defensive captain and safety Jabrill Peppers (commissioner exempt list domestic violence arrest).

Peppers is a chess piece and one of the better safeties in the league. Dolphins didn’t have the QB to expose this loss last week, but the Texans do… also Kyle Dugger missed last week’s game. If he misses this week as well then that really puts the Pats defense in a bind.

IMO this is the kind of game a serious contender is expected to win because there are other games, ( like the following week in Green Bay), which are much more challenging than even
good teams/contenders aren't necessarily counting as wins.
