Week 5 Gameday Thread: Buffalo the Bills

Slowik isn't really running a Shannahan offense. It has elements of it, but it's not featuring TEs or FBs. It's actually more of a spread offense. I think he was chosen too soon as an OC and Stroud keeps bailing him out. You can't live in 3rd & long and succeed for long. I don't really know what Slowik's philosophy is after 24 games. He's all over the place and doesn't seem to know who does what well. Today Akers got a few carries for very good YPC. Ogumbowele got a lot of carries for 2.0 ypc. WTF? Ogumbowole did some good things towards the end of the game, but what could Akers have done? Slowik tries to be too cute for me. I attribute it to a lack of experience and arrogance.
He didn't have his weapons available this game. Although he did have the WR's minus Nico and the TE's.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm waiting until 2-3 games with a healthy Mixon back and hopefully Collins before I start to pass judgement. I dont think many realize how good Mixon really is.

I gotta a question. Now that we've seen the new H-Town uniforms, what did yall think of them? They were kinda of meh to me. I really like that helmet, always have since I first saw it. But the uniforms were nothing special. I thought the H-Town logo in the middle of the field looked good.

Seeing pictures of them before today, I was sorta meh…but after seeing them in living live play, I really like ‘em.

The real question is on the day the Texans had a nice win, why are they spending more time on Watson than on the Texans win? I see some posters in here are routinely posting more about Watson than they do about Stroud. The obsession is flat out weird. To each his own. Carry on folks. LMAO.
Also, it wasn’t a nice win. Buffalo’s coaches displayed more stupidity (Barely) than Houston’s. I don’t give a damn about beating Buffalo. Beat Mahomes AND Lamar when it counts.

It will be great to have Autry and Mixon back soon and still be winning games while they are out.

Gotta win these games to get that chance. And I’m not talking about the games on the schedule with them. I’m talking about playing them in January.

I expected Allen to destroy the Texans secondary. That didn’t happen. Sure, the Texans had their flaws in the 2nd half, but they still put one in the W column. There’s something to be said about that.

And FWIW the Chiefs haven’t looked all that sharp so far. They do however have Swift and the refs in their back pocket, so that will be almost impossible for anyone to beat.

What were the expectations?

It takes time to build a team. They've still got time.
The expectation we and the media built for them was that they offense will be unstoppable with all the new weapons that were added. How are they going to cover Nico, Diggs, Tank, and Schultz. Impossible. TD on every play! This scenario is obviously unrealistic. But I feel like there's room for improvement, and the fact they're winning tough games is a good sign.

Close up they're probably fine. On TV the red bleeds into the black borders on the jersey, and they don't look crisp, just a lot of dark colors, like someone put their finger on each player and smeared the colors. You can't makeout the H-town on the helmets, on TV anyway. They need to re-think those colors, maybe get some white involved.
Yeah, they looked very dark and lacked detail on TV. The red numbers and names need brightening. They should have been blue like the mouthpieces, shoes, and sleeves. The helmet was OK closeup, but on TV it just dark bleh. Disappointed honestly.

The offensive line is good on paper. On the field it isn’t. If that doesn’t explain everything, it should.

Ogunbowale excels at pass protection. During the Colts game, there was a play where Tunsil passed off a rusher to him and he picked it up like a seasoned guard. He's also a good receiver. Both of these abilities open up the playbook even more. If he could improve at running the ball, it would keep defenses guessing.
He’s also really, really good when they manage to pass the ball to him with a bit of space to get going.

Whilst it can be frustrating when they hand it off to him attempting to run between the Tackles and he seems to get nowhere more often than not, he seems to then come up big on those other plays and it evens itself out. Cam Akers offers a great change of pace, but they clearly don’t trust him to be a bell cow, and why should they risk it given his injury history?

The sooner they get Mixon back the better, and those guys can come in situationally and stick to the plays they are good at.

It’s important that Slowick remembers he needs to let Stroud throw the damn ball on early downs, this establish the run to open up the play action and the passing lanes later is idealist fantasy when you are relying on 3rd, 4th string running backs/special teamers.

Once Mixon is back you might be able to run it down their throats again.

It's not so much about the individual personnel to me as it is the overall philosophy.

I get this and tend to agree. He needs this 2024 version of the Texans to all be on the field working consistently together in order for any of us to be able to judge the results fairly and I'm not usually reasonable, rational, or objective so "fairly" is a fairly flexible word for me but it's just true. Lots of changes this year. Lots of changes over the course of last season too. If we can get/stay healthy we might actually see what he's cooking up and whether it's going to work.

Let's get the weapons healthy and see what the philosophy looks like. I'm sure with Mixon and Collins in the game the offense will look much different.

So will the defense when Autry/Harris/Okudah make it back.

The Texans are 4-1 and playing with one hand behind their back. Their depth is being tested and while there have been issues the team has done a great job working through those issues. IMHO

I still think the H logo looks like hot garbage. I can't help it. I'm never going to warm up to that thing. Also I don't like the "H-Town Blue" and don't want that color anywhere near a team I am cheering for.
I think it looks cool.

How did the McNair's get around Amy Skunk's trademark BS?

The bye week for Texans is week 14. While it might be handy right now, I think it might be even better late in the season when we may need it for a playoff push or even to help get guys healthy for the playoffs.
Yes, I said playoffs baby!

I completely understand. After last years roll out of the old Oiler uniforms by the tits, I completely had a change of heart on the Oiler blue. I guess I’m more liking the dark blue and red pop, not so much the H.

Valid point. I'd rather give the players a chance to get healthy and playing their best ball in December and January. Winning in the NFL is hard enough and the Texans are doing it with key players injured/suspended.

The pessimist in me is worried as hell that this is a house of cards, or like the 3 little pigs that built their house out of straw. Yes they find ways to win at the end, but water finds its level and these things will even out if they don’t drastically improve.

But the optimist in me says look they are 4-1 and seem to find ways to win. Something a little different each week. This can be character building. And if they improve, the sky is the limit.

I remember an Oilers team…very early 90’s. They started kinda shaky. Someone can help me here, but they were something like 2-3 and just didn’t look great doing it. Then they got their **** together and reeled off 11 straight. Numbers may be a shade off…but close.

Point is…this team has that kind of ability. 11 straight ability? I doubt that…but they could do something special this year IF they just stop beating themselves, and if the coaches learn to put them into the best position to succeed.

Getting Mixon and Autry will help.
