The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

I keep seeing that Johnny just needs to work on his attitude...

I don't know.

He doesn't seem to be all that talented to me to begin with.

I think preparing better and being humbled will go a long way, but I'll be surprised if he's ever a special player in the nfl. I just don't see it.

If you want to say JFF doesn't have the physical ability to be an NFL player then do so. Not where I would go but hey...

Otherwise the discussion is about his attitude.

He seems to have the apologizing down pretty good, it's the screwing up in the first place that he needs to work on.

I'm talking just how he plays. I don't think physical ability has anything to do with it. Guys with lesser physical tools have done well.

I don't think he reads defenses well. I think he tries to rely on physical ability that's negated in the nfl. Shanahans system should actually cater to his skillset, but he doesn't seem to do the little things that make the system successful.

He's still got a long way to go, and I'm not sure just an attitude adjustment makes him a star. Would likely help. But attitude aside, I'm not a fan of how he plays qb.

Unfortunate for him........he is........:chef:

What are the Browns going to do if Connor Shaw shines on Sunday? It would be a funny dilemma that I could see happening.

i'm going to do my best to wait until the end of 2015 before quoting the **** out of myself with i told you so's. should be interesting to see if he actually grows up in the next 6 months.

Yeah. I thought Connor Shaw was looking good in the preseason. Much better than JFF. Hopefully, I was right and he was the best QB on that team.

And I always liked Chase Daniels when he was with the Saints. I wanted us to bring him in somehow. Hopefully, he'll pull it out, too.

I would say that he has as much chance of growing up mentally anymore as he does growing up physically any more.

I would say that he has as much chance of growing up mentally anymore as he does growing up physically any more.

A new British study reveals that men have an 11 year lag behind women when it comes to maturing. According to the study, commissioned by Nickelodeon UK, the average man doesn't reach full emotional maturity until age 43, while women mature by age 32.

You're just going to have to patiently wait a bit longer before you and Johnny Money will be hanging like him and LeBron do now.

I would say that he has as much chance of growing up mentally anymore as he does growing up physically any more.

yeah i dont see it happening either, but i had someone lump him in with the other rookie quarterbacks using the argument "it's too early to know how they'll turn out". which is right, even though i knew how johnny would turn out before he declared for the draft. so i'll wait, and probably laugh.

I'm told Johnny Manziel and Josh Gordon were both absent from the Browns' walkthrough today.

They're both in Las Vegas............Gordon with a reefer in his hand.......Manziel with a Hurricane cocktail in his hand..........

#Browns Manziel fined for being late for treatment today. On IR and didn't need to participate in walk-through.

Going to take this really seriously now (after this last little incident.) :kitten:

Possibly a woman, but I would wager it is 56 year old dudes putting out maturity reports. Who has the time, resources and want to evangelize the duh?

Just saw a story that Maziiel and Gordon were late because Manziel had a party at his place Friday night.

Lol. This guy doesn't get it.

Manziel is on injured reserve, so he wasn’t going to play today anyway, but the fact that he’s showing up late for work - and that his party is leading other players to be late to work - is extremely alarming behavior for a franchise quarterback. Have you ever heard of Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees or Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson hosting a late-night party that resulted in themselves and teammates showing up late to work the next morning?

Manziel claims he’s taking his work seriously, but talk is cheap. Manziel’s actions suggest that he just doesn’t get it.

Browns first 1st round pick, CB Justin Gilbert, was also caught up in this Manziel mess missing Saturday's team meeting resulting in his being suspended from play this week. Johnny Money is costing the franchise players.

Just saw a story that Manziel and Gordon were late because Manziel had a party at his place Friday night.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/12/johnny_manziel_and_josh_gordon.html

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johnny Manziel threw a big party Friday night that resulted in his fine for being late for treatment Saturday morning and Josh Gordon suspended for missing the Saturday walk-through, several sources told cleveland.com.

The source told told cleveland.com that Josh Gordon, who's suspended for today's game against the Ravens, attended Manziel's party along with other members of the team.
...
By Saturday morning, team security was sent to Manziel's apartment to try to find him, because he failed to show up for treatment on the hamstring, and he wasn't answering his phone, a source told cleveland.com on Saturday. The source also said he was fined for being tardy.
...
The fact that Manziel threw a party the night before the Browns left for Baltimore is a huge concern, because the rookie quarterback was reprimanded last month for being involved in a fight at his downtown apartment, The 9, the night before the Browns left for Atlanta. The 9 is also one of the hottest spots in town with a number of popular bars and restaurants.

Manziel's Friday night party may have been thrown at a local bar. Gordon's suspension followed a series of incidents in which he had been late for team meetings and fined.

Both players have vowed this season to get their act together and grow up. Manziel said on Tuesday that he matured throughout the season and realized he needed to take his job seriously.

So the Browns actually have a "franchise QB" that makes everyone around him worse...

Yep, sounds like the Browns.

I know he doesn't have that much power, but...

I wonder how much "multiple Browns players" drinking & dancing & whatever else until 2:00/3:00/4:00AM Saturday morning at JohnnyParty™ took its toll on Cleveland's Sunday performance as the 4th quarter approached?

Missing Gilbert had to hurt no matter what effect it had on others

Yep, sounds like the Browns.

Sounds like that is happening. I for one have been irritated with all of the extra criticism that Manziel receives as far as his lifestyle goes off the field, but hearing this kind of stuff makes it more relevant to criticize him for. It is almost funny that a brand new first round QB is potentially causing off the field problems that are becoming internal problems for multiple team members at the QB position and a bad rookie at that. Manziel is likely to go down as one of the worst Heisman busts in history.

Sounds like the Browns are having buyers remorse.

edit/update:

Johnny Manziel says he didn't throw a party, but admits he needs to stop 'looking like a jacka$$'
Johnny Manziel apologized Monday to his teammates for being a distraction and took full responsibility for partying too late and oversleeping for his Saturday morning treatment.

He said "it's 100 percent false'' that he had a party Friday night and that it led to Josh Gordon also missing the walk-through, but he acknowledged that he has to learn from his mistakes or he's going to be out of the league...

Browns general manager Ray Farmer stressed Tuesday in his wrap-up press conference that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam did not pull the trigger on drafting Johnny Manziel, who's showing strong signs that he might not cut it with the Browns.

"He did not,'' said Farmer. "At the end of the day, Jimmy did not make the call. I know a lot of people want to stick that on Jimmy. But for the world to hear, Jimmy Haslam did not make that call. He didn't try to influence the decision, he didn't try to push it in a different direction, he did none of those things.''

The impression that Haslam made the call came from the infamous post-draft radio interview with quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains, but a source said Loggains never meant to give that impression during the interview and that it was clearly Farmer's decision.

"We're sitting there and they keep showing Johnny on T.V. and Johnny and I are texting and he shoots me a text and he says, 'I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to be there. I want to wreck this league together.'

"When I got that text, I forwarded it to the owner and to the head coach (Mike Pettine),'' Loggains said on Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly on Arkansas ESPN. "I'm like 'this guy wants to be here. He wants to be part of it.' As soon as that happened, Mr. Haslam said, 'pull the trigger. We're trading up to go get this guy.'''

Farmer noted things didn't transpire exactly like that.

"Again, I can say wit 100 percent certainty, Dowell Loggains was not in the room when that discussion happened,'' said Farmer.

Haslam said during a Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon in May that Farmer not only made the decision to draft Manziel, but to trade up from No. 26 to No. 22 to take him, surrendering a third-round pick in the process.

"Ray's the one that picked Johnny Manziel," Haslam said. "We took the top-rated quarterback on our board when he was available. That was solely Ray's call, not my call."

He added, however, that "Ray gets a lot of input, Ray's the one that decided to make the trade, Ray's the one that picked Johnny Manziel, Ray's the one that made those calls and that's his job. I want to make that very clear.''

So either Farmer has agreed to fall on the Manziel grenade for Haslam or it was Farmer on his own who traded up for and drafted Manziel. I think it was Haslam, and all of these protestations just highlight that.

Wow ... that's crazy that they are already deflecting blame for drafting Manziel. It doesn't look good right now however I think it's still a little early for that.

Manziel was out partying again after he commented on partying Friday lol

On the same day ESPN's Skip Bayless called him a "liar" and "an alcoholic," Johnny Manziel decided to stay home by himself and read a book.

Just kidding ... he totally went out and partied in Miami.

Manziel hit up FDR at the Delano Hotel where he clubbed alongside Victor Cruz, Ryan Phillippe, and Maverick Carter. We're told Manziel asked fellow partiers not to take any pics while he was kicking it in the club.

That didn't stop Miami club queen Julz from posting a vid of Johnny Football giving LeBron James a happy birthday shout out.

Odd that Johnny hit the club just hours after Bayless called him out -- and Johnny himself promised to be more responsible as a pro football player.

As we told you ... Manziel was out partying Friday night before he missed a team treatment session on Saturday.

Honey badger who?

JM don't care.

I actually like that he doesn't give two ****s. But if he sucks as a football player it won't matter. All they'll see is stuff like this.

I still don't see the allure of drafting players like Manziel and Young in the first place. High risk, low Pro Football ceilings.

Had I been in the room, I'd have started deflecting blame before the pick was even submitted. :)

You don't? Really?

Team president Alec Scheiner told ESPN’s Darren Rovell on Friday that the Browns have sold more than 2,000 season tickets in the time since Manziel was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the NFL draft. And according to Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer, 1,000 of those new customers and renewals came within an hour of the conclusion of the first round.

Remember when the combo of LeBron and Johnny Football had Cleveland on top of the Sports World?

Yes, I disregarded that angle though. It is very short term thinking.

As far as the Texans go though, they sell out all the games anyway AND they passed on Young. They got that right.

They're drafted high because half or a significant number of people think they are high risk, high ceiling.

I just don't get the high ceiling part. I'm no talent evaluator/draft expert though.

My guess is because despite his diminutive stature he looks like Russell Wilson. He may have similar measurables to smaller QB's. The problem is there is no way to measure or gauge Manziels desire to excel or willingness to curtail his partying. He clearly does not get it. As a QB in the NFL ability alone does not cut. I don't know if he'll turn it around or just continue to fizzle out, but it's not looking good him.

Perhaps we underestimated how bad Johnny was going to be.

Yep. I've never been so disappointed with a "football" player in my life. My arguments, at least for what was shown on game day in college, were completely valid. The guy screwed around in the offseason but NEVER did it effect his on field performance. I'm now beginning to believe the Aggies just did a hell of a job covering up for this jackass and a lot more went on than any of us were aware of. He got away with it in college because he was going up against college athletes. Now that he's playing against guys stronger and faster than he is while he continues to do the same things he did in college, and he is finding out that Johnny "Football" truly is little more than Johnny 8ball.

While I still think the Clowney pick was an atrocious decision, I am glad we didn't draft Johnny with 1-1. I'd much rather have gone Watkins or Mack, but Johnny has been possibly the greatest bust in NFL history. Pathetic....

If only the Vikings wouldn't have moved up right in front of the Texans to take Bridgewater the Clowney pick would not have been as disastrous. If the Texans had BW right now it wouldn't be as bad considering at one point during the off season many thought he could go #1 overall.

Cam Newton

Guys like that win when there's no reason for them to win. & for teams like the Browns, whatever it takes to get that winning culture started is an awful attractive lure.

Now, I'm not saying Cam Newton is a bad QB. Just that he had a lot more to learn than your traditional top 5 picked QB would (same as Mariotta). His athleticism & "plus" ability gives him a good chance to win, which buys him time to learn.

Just like Vince... only he never took the time to learn.

I can't even count how many people tried to argue with me that Manziel was the next Russell Wilson. Ridiculous.

I forgive the Aggies. They were blinded. But the rest...

Johnny Manziel not exactly off to sterling start in offseason
Again, Manziel is entitled to his time. But given the circumstances of his plaintive speech in the locker room on Monday and then this video -- FaceTime doesn’t work on iPhones anymore? -- it’s worth going through his chronology.
  • Feb. 14 -- Before the draft, in February, Manziel said many of the same things about Johnny Football being gone and taking his job seriously.
  • May 9 -- Manziel texted the Browns during the draft and urged the team to take him so they could “wreck this league” together. After being taken 22nd overall, Manziel did his “money” sign as he walked on stage.
  • May 10 -- After the draft, Manziel partied the night away with magnums of champagne and celebrities.
  • May 26 -- Manziel appeared in several online photos in Vegas during a down time in the team's offseason work.
  • June 10 -- The now infamous photo was taken of him on the floating swan with a bottle of champagne.
  • June 16 -- The “money phone” video appeared.
  • June 27 -- At the rookie symposium, Manziel spoke with the media and said he would not change his life for anybody.
  • July 4 -- A photo of Manziel rolling money into a small tube in a Vegas bathroom appeared.
  • July 25 -- The Browns admit they were “alarmed” by some of Manziel’s behavior.
  • July 26 -- The Browns called Manziel in the day before training camp and spoke pointedly to him about his off-field habits. Owner Jimmy Haslam said the team “expects better from him.”
  • Aug. 14 -- Manziel was late for a training camp meeting, saying he “misread the schedule.”
  • Aug. 18 -- Manziel extended his middle finger to the Redskins' bench in a nationally televised game, for which he was fined $12,500.
  • Aug. 20 -- Brian Hoyer was named the starter and Manziel admitted not being ready.
  • Nov. 22 -- There was a lobby incident/fight between Manziel, a friend and a fan Manziel described as aggressive and intoxicated. The Browns expressed disappointment at the timing of the incident, at 2:36 a.m. the morning the team was flying to Atlanta for a game.
  • Dec. 1 -- Manziel replaces Hoyer in Buffalo and runs for a touchdown to end his first drive.
  • Dec. 12 -- Yahoo! posts a story detailing the crazed lifestyle Manziel had in college, and how he went from being a college player "to Elvis."
  • Dec. 14 -- Manziel started his first game against Cincinnati and threw for 80 yards as the Browns lost 30-0.
  • Dec. 21 -- Manziel pulls his hamstring and leaves the game just before halftime in Carolina.
  • Dec. 23 -- Manziel says he intends to take his job more seriously, that “it’s a job for me now.”
  • Dec. 27 -- Manziel did not show up for a team walk-through and treatment, with Browns security going to his home to find him. He later admitted to being out the night before.
  • Dec. 29 -- Manziel says he can't say anything more to prove himself, that he has to put his words into action. The team agrees.
  • Dec. 30 -- The Instagram video appeared with Manziel wishing James happy birthday.

Do you think Bridgewater lived up to expectations, fell short, or exceeded expectations?

I think he's exactly who we thought he was going to be.

I also think he was drafted exactly where he should have been, bottom of the first. I was surprised he lasted as long as he did & while I'm not terribly upset, I would have liked to see the Texans to trade up to get him, especially after he fell past 25.

I saw him in person when they played the Bucs here. I would say he looked like a rookie however one that looks like he is going to "get it", unlike the rookie that this thread is based on.

I do know that there would be a lot more excitement in Houston if he were on the roster opposed to Clowney.

Completely agree. I was as ardent a supporter of Manziel as anyone, but I was PISSED when they didn't trade up for Bridgewater. When he fell that low, I felt like it was a classic buy low situation. And look at who we took at 2-1. Was he even active once this season?

I can't even count how many people tried to argue with me that Manziel was the next Russell Wilson. Ridiculous.

I forgive the Aggies. They were blinded. But the rest...

Because Manziel showed he had every bit the accuracy that Wilson showed in college, was called by the greatest college football mind possibly in history "the fiercest competitor" he'd ever gone up against, and was the most accurate deep ball QB in the college last season.

What us Manziel fans missed (and yes, I'm an Aggie too so thanks for your forgiveness) is that Russell Wilson is a true student of the game. The guy works harder than anyone else on the field, and this is precisely what the Mannings, Lucks, Bradys, etc of the world possess. To this point, Manziel hasn't shown even a sliver of that, and I honestly believed he'd take the NFL more seriously. To all of us that were fans of Manziel, he's been nothing more than a giant turd.
