Because they train the FB position as part of the TE group, so Schultz is the next man up to play FB, not the backup RB.

Is there anything Schultz can do that Pierce or Mixon can't? Why would you ever go with Schultz in the back field?

TK m, it’s just gone 9pm on a Saturday night here, 3 of the kids I foster are in bed, the eldest is on her way back (late) from a first date with a boyfriend, Mrs Welsh Texan is out on the town, I’m 4 beers deep and revved up for this game. And here you are playing Jedi mind tricks. What is your answer dude?

No Schultz isn’t as good as Pierce or Mixon in the backfield, I actually think Pierce is a great idea as a lead blocker, the man is a violent runner. But there is a clear reason why Schultz subs in to that role due to the way the team prepare for games.
 
We had a fullback .... within the last two years, a big white boy, powerful .... always did his job and then some. Threw him a pass over on the right side .... someone lost coverage. He had big, soft hands & sucked it in .... hauled ass down the sideline and none on the DBs, .... no one gained on him. CRS - can't remember his name .... but I can still him flying down the field ,,,, I loved it !

Right now as we get ready to play the Chargers I'd prefer to have the version of CJ we had a
year ago today vs the current version, but I'm sorry I think we are a long ways from just
a couple of tweaks from being truly competitive with the big boys in the AFC.
However you are certainly accurate to say we had a tougher schedule this past season.

Schultz has a bigger catch radius and knows more routes...but he is very limited athletically and should be upgraded.
 
Why defer? Id rather have an extra possession in the first half since we don't make half time adjustments
