Smith trying to stick it to elway again...
:hmmm:

Kinda reminds me of losing at blackjack
.and throwing more and more money in ao that you can win and break even, yet we will see if we lose again

Question for you draft guys - how many picks do we move up in the first by trading the newly acquired 4th round pick?

I'm curious to see if there are draft plans with this move and/or other FA moves besides Romo with the extra cash. Something is in the works.

If it's their original pick, about 3 or 4 spots. If it's their comp pick, a spot.

This is just according to the very ballpark-y draft value chart.

Report: Texans aren't willing to trade Cowboys to acquire Romo
Michael McClymont Mar 9, 2017 3:04 PM
The Houston Texans will not be trading for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo after reportedly sending quarterback Brock Osweiler and two draft picks to the Cleveland Browns, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Such a development doesn't mean the Texans would be opposed to signing Romo should he be released.

More to come.

I dont think you can trade comp picks, so it would have to be their original

Yes you can. Thank you Texian, Powda, and Wolf for the knowledge

This whole thing blows me away. It played out this way in my head...

Bob McNair: "Rick, we need a QB".

Rick Smith: "Well I have a plan. We sign the Broncos backup QB to a ridiculous contract but we give ourselves an out in case he sucks. If he's good then we keep him. If he sucks then we trade draft picks to get rid of him so another team can have our picks and then use the out we built into the contract to cut him. Then, wait for it Bob, then we throw money at a 36-year old who got injured 3 times behind the best O-Line in football. Either we do that or we draft Derek Carr. What do you think Bob?"

Bob McNair: "Another Carr? No way man, do the other thing."

Son of a ...

Hate giving up a 2nd in this.
Why? I love it. Look at our disappointing track record of second-round picks during Rick Smith's tenure as GM. I'd have tossed in a third or fourth-rounder if needed. The Browns could have gotten more from us to take on that huge guaranteed salary for 2017.

We had to pay a team our second round pick to get rid of our starting quarterback. Wait wait wait, we had to pay a team our second round pick to get rid of our starting quarterback. How do Rick Smith and Bill O'Brien still have jobs after the following statement ... we had to pay a team our second round pick to get rid of our starting quarterback?

LMAO WE SUCK!

This makes me hate him even more. Just because he came here and sucked ass now he's going to cry and whine like a little *****.

As far as a the trade, I'm glad Osweiler is gone. I'm going to wait and see what else happens before I make a final judgment on it. On the surface I'm not really a big fan of it though.

I really don't get it. This is 100% for cap THIS YEAR, because Brock was only going to cost us $6M against the cap next year. We only save $10M against the cap this year, although we don't have to worry about the $6M next year. I just don't understand.

Not only did the Texans sign Brock Osweiler as free agent, they just gave Cleveland a 2018 2nd rd draft pick to do so. And then they traded him to Cleveland for a 2017 4th rd draft pick. You can't make this **** up.
I think we got their 4th and they got out 6th...your point noted though

Because 2nd round picks can be of tremendous value. Ask Connor Barwin, Demeco Ryans, Benardrick McKinney, and soon to be Nick Martin.

I agree but we don't seem to make enough of them. Those guys are the rare exceptions. It's likely 50-50, maybe 40-60 with Rick Smith as GM. Remember in Jadeveon Clowney's draft we could have snagged Derek Carr in the second round but went O-Line instead.

I absolutely love it.
Move up 2 rounds this year ,give up next years 2nd ,gain cap room and most important "Get rid of Osweiler"

We traded them a qb so they wont draft one this year being rick figured we would lose a,2nd rounder anyway to move up..

I am jokingly brainstorming

I don't know when 50-50 or 40-60 became rare, but ok.

The trade pretty much means that the Texans were going to cut him this year anyways IMO.

I'm in the camp where this is genius.

Realised they stuffed up and have moved out from under the millstone they had gotten stuck with.

For me a second round pick to get back into a competitive cap space is totally worth it.

I don't know what is more ridiculous, the fact that you actually would call this bust of a move genius since we now lost picks after a bad signing, or the fact that other desperate Texans fans actually liked that comment.

I get it that people are glad Oz is gone. I am too. But calling this move genius? :mariopalm:

Slightly encouraging, Os sucked and his play last year was when the poor decision was realized, getting rid of him was a good move. I like having an earlier pick this year with this crop of players. Losing next year's second stings but if you believe this team can compete now it makes sense to have the extra dough to acquire pieces earlier, and with the salary cap inflation it makes even more sense. All in all, getting rid of Oz was the right move, it doesn't change how it was a bad move last year but it realizes the loss without it having a larger effect going forward.

My feelings exactly bro.
Yes we get no 2nd next year but you basically have to say that with that move we get a player in FA this year....Dontari Poe, a better OL, possibly another good receiver...or maybe AJ Bouye doesn't sign and comes back to us.
Now we can get a QB in the draft and maybe a veteran QB to float the boat.

I don't get it. At first, people were upset as of yesterday because Brock was on the roster taking up all this cap space. We remove Brock, get more cap space and people want to get pissed because we are losing a 2nd rounder next year. But man, if that cash we just got this year turns into a better young OL, I will not be upset at that.

They made a mistake and realized it. The alternative was keeping Brock on the team and his terrible contract. The 2nd rounder hurts, but Brock's contract is longer.

They built an out into the contract specifically in case he sucked. Instead of utilizing that out we are giving up picks and replacing him with a guy who will be injured by week 6.
