Texans roster moves

Wow. I can't remember us ever making this many moves during the season. It's like having tryouts all year long.

It's called a coaching staff evaluating talent and getting the best players on the team. We haven't seen that in Houston before. I'm liking OB and his staff more and more every week...

I listen to random fantasy football podcasts when I exercise and today there was a gal who was the show's "injury expert" they went to for updated injury reports/explanations and their fantasy impact for this week...

When they got to the Texans she was all confused about Arian Foster's injury/playing status saying, "There's something funny going on there between Head Coach Bill O'Brien and Foster, I can't figure it out...

"With Kubiak he told us exactly what the injury situation was so we knew what to expect. With O'Brien... not so much."

I like that. (Although I know it steams Dr. CND.)

I doubt this is going to be the norm... OB's only had one off-season to get "his guys" in here & he's realizing that this isn't a 2-14 team... not with Andre Johnson & Jj Watt on the Roster.

Two, maybe three years from now, when this is truly "his team" he'll be as attached to his players as the other more established coaches are attached to theirs.

Yep. Fans should not get too attached to any player in the middle- or low-tiers of this roster. I think we're looking at two solid years of strong churn at the bottom of the roster in order for O'Brien to really get the players he wants and the team he wants.

Having said that, O'Brien gives the impression that even when he gets "his guys" in here, they'll still have to perform.

I hope this means Arian is 100% & we can reasonably expect him to play out the rest of the season.

Texans Sign CB Jumal Rolle away from Packers' Practice Squad
Despite having a roster spot still open, the Packers have reportedly lost one of their most promising practice squad players to another team on Wednesday.

The Packers have been carrying 52 players on the active roster since linebacker Andy Mulumba went on injured reserve a few weeks ago. Despite having the ability to promote one of their ten practice squad players to the active roster, they have chosen not to do so. Apparently, that decision has come back to bite general manager Ted Thompson, who just lost one of the more promising players to another NFL team:

Frankly, I'm stumped by this move. With an open spot, Thompson could have certainly extended Rolle a contract offer matching that of the Texans in an effort to keep him in Green Bay. The fact that Rolle signed with the Texans means one of two things:

1. Thompson did not think highly enough of Rolle to offer him the last open roster spot; or
2. Thompson did offer Rolle a matching contract, but Rolle declined and preferred to take the job in Houston.

After the impressive camp he had, many (APC included) expected Rolle to make the team ahead of fellow corner Demetri Goodson, though Goodson suffered a concussion late in training camp which may have contributed to the decision. Still, even with six corners on the roster, if Thompson thought highly of Rolle it would make little sense to save that roster spot for some other reason.

That brings me to scenario number two. It's possible that Rolle did get an offer from both teams, and chose the Texans instead. It's also possible that money could be a factor and that the Texans gave him more than the league minimum (though that seems unlikely)...

CB Jumal Rolle

Catawba College

6' - 188 lbs

40 - 4.52

Bills signed him as an UDFA in 13. Bills waived him and the Saints picked him up. Saints waived him and the Pack signed him to the PS. He was activated once in 13

Green Bay --- After seeing Jumal Rolle practice for the first time last year, Joe Whitt went back and watched his tape from the Buffalo Bills preseason.

And the cornerbacks coach was surprised that Rolle was cut. He was a player.

I wouldn't go on to read this move as anything but that Brown was useless and only taking up a roster spot needlessly.........and that we needed help, especially this week, from a good fast cover CB. With Murray being such a threat, you want your CBs to be able to cover one-on-one so that more personel can be devoted to Murray.

Not just the Cowboys but with Indy, Steelers and Eagles also coming up we need all the help we can get in the secondary against those passing offenses.

Agreed on Brown. Foster was clearly less than 100% this past weekend, but even at that, neither Brown nor Grimes was in for a single offensive snap. Perhaps it might mean that they're more comfortable with Blue's pass protection, although I'm not even sure about that.

Interesting... the Texans were very interested in Demitri Goodson, possibly with a late pick but certainly as an UDFA. They brought him here for a pre-draft visit, really liked him on and off the field. But the Packers jump up and grab him in the 6th Round. Many felt Goodson deserved the spot on the 53 man roster that Goodson got... had the Packers waived Goodson we certainly would have claimed him(injured or not)... and now we end up with the guy on the other side of that equation.

I think you've nailed, as Brown was brought in for pass pro right after DJ let Savage get his bell rung in the end zone for a safety.

Texans Sign CB Jumal Rolle away from Packers' Practice Squad

Found this Cheese Head piece:

It's difficult to understand the rationale for allowing Rolle to sign with the Texans given that the Packers had a spot open on their 53-man roster after placing linebacker Andy Mulumba on injured reserve Sept. 19. The team has yet to make a corresponding move since that date.

There are a couple reasons why a team like the Packers might be hesitant to fill the roster spot:

They are leaving open the possibility of claiming a player they like on waivers.
They are waiting for an injured player to get healthy, such as Jermichael Finley or Johnny Jolly.
They are waiting for J.C. Tretter to come off short-term injured reserve Week 8 at the earliest.
They are leaving open the possibility of promoting a player from the practice squad if another team wants to sign him.

It's Rolle's decision to leave. We may never know if the Packers offered Rolle an opportunity to be promoted, unless the media asks and the Packers answer truthfully.

If they did, however, it's clear they didn't make much of an effort to sign Rolle by either waiting to do so after placing Mulumba on I.R., offering him more money than the Texans or promising the possibility of playing time.

This was likely before the Jumal signing, but is there an issue with our DBs that we don't know about? Injury?

These are all DBs

The Texans (and most teams I believe) workout players every Tuesday just to keep an up to date rolodex of potential FA replacements. They schedule those by position group, and I'm guessing yesterday was simply D-Back day. Perhaps they intentionally made it D-back day since they knew they were getting rid of Brown and wanted a CB to take his roster spot, but Tuesday tryouts are definitely the norm.

That's a lot to ask of a guy you just signed off of another teams practice squad.

At this stage, we don't even know if he's a good teammate ...:sarcasm:

Playing Dallas this week and Indy the next. Need more cornerbacks because we will be running a lot of nickel and dime. Nothing more, nothing less IMO

Agree. The Texans are just going out and getting what they need for the coming weeks. It's just unusual to see them doing that. It's not how they've traditionally approached things (even when they really needed to).

I take that last part back. They've always been good at churning the bottom of the roster and finding impact practice squad/street free agent guys late in the year when it no longer mattered. It's just really nice to see them being proactive about it while the season still matters.

Well, there is one haunting my brain anyway; how badly hurt is A.J. Bouye? ...and is this why we needed to sign another CB?

...okay, that's two questions.

Darryl Morris was hurt on his game ending INT. Maybe something to do with that?

If anything for the Dallas game I would expect them to bring in another DL or ILB to help shore up the run defense.

I suspect that man coverage doesn't take long to implement. It's the zone responsibilities and mixed coverages which would take time.

But correct me if I'm wrong.

That was back in the old days. You know, when we had to walk to school in three foot of snow and all that. Modern technology has given us portable vaporizers now. It was kind of hard to disguise that pipe when going to the mall.
