Texans random thought of the day

One area of concern I have coming out of the bye is the Texans red zone efficiency. Their current red zone TD conversion rate is 38.1% which is 27th in the league. The have 21 trips to the red zone (tied with the Lions and Titans for 11th in the NFL) & have scored only 8 TDs. If they can get this number up they really could have a chance to make the playoffs.
This is just off the top of my head and I don't have any numbers to actually support this but it really feels like penalties have been the main culprit in our red zone woes. Too many red zone trips have had penalties completely stall and/or kill drives.

Some of that was on CJ who struggled early with situational blitz recognition and hot reads which seems to have improved as time has gone on so hopefully that helps while hopefully other things like the holds get cleaned up as well. Plus I seem to recall some of those calls were on the referees as even though I'm biased some of them looked like extremely ticky tack calls.

It doesn’t help that we have no run game either. In the red zone the Texans are averaging 1.7 YPC. Pierce is averaging less than a foot per carry, 5 yards on 16 touches.

Someone on reddit posited that we should trade Stingley for Young this week and it really had me laughing. If we're going to have a talented young defender who is unable to stay on the field on our roster it may as well be one on a rookie deal.
I can readily see stingly being a trade package but not for this guy.

I think it depends on how the rest of the season plays out. We know Nick Caserio likes to move around the draft. And if Meco and the staff feel a better CB could be found via draft. I can see a move near the draft. However, if Stingley comes back playing like a Pro Bowl player. I can see the FO giving him 1 more season in a make or break type situation.

I know it’s become a bit of a running joke but in all seriousness does anyone understand the Derek Rivers situation? The dude has never shown anything on the field as far as I can remember and he has been cut and re-signed a ridiculous amount of times. Just a strange deal

At times a player is kept around on a low money deal. Most of the time they are practice squad or camp bodies. During the season, it's almost always practice squad. Basically, he is just good enough to be annoying as he pretends to be a player on the weeks opponent. Now Derek Rivers is a little different. He was an OK DE coming out of school. However, that was I think 20017. His career is one of opportunity that was slammed shut due to an injury. For example, he was drafted by NE in 2017 in training camp he tore his ACL. He missed the season. In 2018- 2019 he was with NE again in spot duty playing 6 games. In 2019-2020 He was hurt again (knee injury) and NE let him go to clear roster space. He did play briefly. The Rams picked him up in 2020 and played in 2 games. Both post season and they were eliminated by GB after 2 games. Either GB let him go or he was a FA I forget in 2021 and the Texans signed him to a 1yr prove it type deal of 1mil. In 2022 he hurt his bicep and went on IR again. Then, I'll cut and paste this because it is very weird and doesn't really say why he was released last.

FROM HIS WIKI PAGE:

Rivers re-signed with the Texans on March 16, 2023.[28] On August 30, he was both released from the active roster and signed to the practice squad.[29]

In a flurry of moves over the course of three weeks, Rivers was shifted between being promoted to the active roster,[30] being released,[31] and being re-signed to the practice squad, starting with his promotion to the active roster on September 21 and ending as a member of the practice squad on October 7.

Why does Nick continually give Derek Rivers NFL contracts? 16 career tackles since 2018.
Is there a fanbase out there that gets as negative about camp bodies as ours?

We're Texan fans. Griping is in our DNA. It's usually all we have to do is gripe. Even when times are good we are so used to griping, we just can't stop.

Why are people so desperate to get out from under Stingley but equally desperate to go trade for Chase Young?

I haven't seen trade for Young. I have seen take a high 2nd or a package deal for a 1st or 2 high 2nds for Stingley. Because IF he can only get past 10-12 games a year, upper 2nd round CBs are no question able to stay healthy for 17+ games. They would be cheap in a season or 2 and honestly if all the QBs go in the 1st a bunch of 1st round grade/ability CBs are going to be available at say pics 33 to 45.

It takes two to tango. I doubt any GM would be willing to give up anything to trade for an IR queen. I wouldn't give a plugged nickel for him.

I’d give up a pack of wrigley chewing gum and a 1972 deck of playing cards with topless girls for the Queens for Sting and Green.

From article:

Watson already has decided in the not-too-distant past that he didn’t want to play for the team with which he had signed a major contract. He sat out a full year while awaiting his ticket out of Houston. And even with the 20-plus lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct during massage-therapy sessions, he got what he wanted.

Pierce elaborated on that level of precision, embracing the challenge.

“We’re a lot more detailed than last year, two different offenses,” Pierce continued. “It comes from the 49ers, those guys got a winning tradition, those guys know how to win, they know how to run the ball. They know exactly what they want, they know how they want it.”

Semantics, I know... but he didn't really elaborate on anything.

I understand there's a new offense & it's going to take time to adjust to it. But last year the OL wasn't opening holes for him & he just looked better. Very violent & punishing at the LOS. IMO the difference in the OL does not account for the difference we're seeing in DP31.

Be careful, you're liable to get a scathing dressing down for using that word

Just heard an interesting tidbit on 610. The Titans will be wearing their Oiler throwback uniforms today - and Billy White Shoes will be inducted into their Wall of Honor.

A disagreeing comment was thrown out, what relationship does Billy Johnson have with Tennessee?

Now the interesting part which was new to me. When Adams left and took his team to Tennessee, he had included in the legal paperwork a clause which stated that all Oiler history would follow the team to Tennessee. This is the reason the Texans are unable to honor Houston's Oiler past.

Good for Billy to get recognition from somewhere cause he's certainly not getting it from the Texans. Even though Nashville has no idea who he is.

It's not just White Shoes. Are any of the Oilers being recognized by the Texans? They are legally prohibited from doing so by that legal clause.

I don't know about all of that. I do know that Curtis Duncan, Bubba McDowell and Haywood Jeffires were apart of some kind of Texans Ambassador thing they were doing a while back. I personally ran into Jeffires a couple of times in the Yellow Lot while tailgating.

That is correct info. there was a clause in the agreement for Bud Adams to take the colors and the name to Tennessee with him.

The Texans also honored Bum at a game. Can't remember what year that was. Pretty sure Bum never went to Nashville to let the Titans honor him.
