Texans random thought of the day

Maybe we should trade picks and players for cap space again?

Ugh, just kidding.

For some cap space and draft picks are more important than players. Even though teams like the Bucs/Rams have proven this to be a fallacy. This narrative has been put out there by the owners who put profits over winning. (Looking at you Calhoun) Unfortunately a lot of fans have bought into this theory, because that's the way business had always been done until recently.

If they can’t move WD40 prior to the draft I would target future picks in trade down. Less money needed to spend on this year’s rookie class.

I'm thinking the exact same. More rookie deals and less 1-2 year prove it contracts.

There's a very good case to be made for this way of thinking, especially with the depth in this draft.

I get it and was referencing the worst deal in Texans history (Brock trade-imo.) That better not be their solution. There's always room to restructure and maneuver. My 1st thoughts when reading those #'s was:

- this is what happens when you sign half the team to 1 year deals.

- we're going to trade back in the draft. A lot.

Trust me, I have no sympathy for ownership.

SMDH

2020 Bucs
2012 - Lavonte David
2014 - Mike Evans
2015 - Ali Marpet, Donovan Smith
2017 - Chris Godwin
2018 - Vita Vea, Ronald Jones, Carlton Davis, Alex Cappa
2019 - Devin White, Sean Murphy-Bunting, Scotty Miller
2020 - Tristan Wirfs, Antoine Winfield Jr.

All draft picks. That was the core of the team. That is the talent that drew the GOAT to Tampa in the first place.

2021 Rams - 12 starters that were homegrown. Including a 3X DPOY and the 2021 Offensive POY and Super Bowl LVI MVP Cooper Kupp. Without that core, there was no point in adding Stafford, Miller, and Ramsey.

You have to build a core in the draft. Everyone knows that (everyone except you). Then, you can add the finishing touches in free agency and trades. The Texans are years and years away from that point.

They did add Brady/Gronk/Fournette/AB etc... in FA. You know top tier type FA's.

I do agree that the foundation needs to be built through the draft and I hope Caserio spends the next couple of seasons building the foundation. Then I hope Calhoun spends the money in FA to make HIS team a true championship contender. He's going to have to let Caserio do his job and do away with the Not Texans Worthy motto.

Were Gronk, Fournette, and AB considered top tier FAs?

To me they were.

Gronk/AB were top 5 at their positions. Fournette while not top 5 at his position he was a very solid FA pickup. Certainly he was a top 5 player at his position in that FA class.

Weren’t they both basically out of football? Gronk was retired & AB was AB.

And then they weren't.

Regardless, they were top 5 at their positions and the Bucs spent the money to get them. Like the Rams did, except they spen their money through trades.

They wanted to play with Tom Brady and Brady wanted AB.. Without Brady you weren't getting either.

And where our team is and has been the last few seasons I don't want a malcontent like Antonio Brown anywhere near the facility

Agreed about AB. Unless he's the last piece you need to win a ring like he was with Brady. This isn't a problem the Calhoun's have to worry about but if they rebuild the team and are contenders in 3-4 yrs then I hope they would take chances on guys to put them over the top like the Chiefs/Bucs did. Unfortunately I dont think this will ever happen with the religious cult down on Kirby.

I don't know what they paid Gronk, but they obviously low balled AB & prevented him from reaching the escalator in his contract that would have meant another $1M

How many snaps during that period?
Sure, JD was on the field more, but if Martin is the better pass rusher, why is he not on the field?

And though the number of snaps may have Martin edging out JD in sack percentage, JD still had a better percentage of QBH and TFL. Negligible differences if nothing else, but not enough to say one was clearly better than the other ... in that time period, of course.

So you'd be cool with adding a guy like Brown who has been accused of rape and sexual assault, to get over the hump to win a Super Bowl. Interesting...

If he was found not guilty or had the charges dropped, then no I wouldn't have a problem with this. Now if he had charges pending and was still out there stalking the internet for new victims I would have a problem with that.

With this said I don't want AB on the team because I think he's crazy.

Clowney - 12 sacks, 38 QBH
Martin - 10.5 sacks, 16 QBH

Are those numbers SINCE the trade? or just one year? I just never really liked Clowney as a pass rusher. One trick pony bull rusher. Very good run stopper though.
