Texans random thought of the day

I predicted the Texans will go 12-4 in 2018 but am I underselling how great this team actually is with a healthy Deshaun Watson? What if they go 15-1, 14-2 or 13-3? I feel like I'm slighting them at 12 wins.

Have the Texans signed a RB in the last week. I have not followed. They need help there and I am afraid they don't see it. Just saw West signed by Chiefs. I think Foreman will be a non factor this year due to injury. Just my feeling.

Beginning to think the Texans will only sign a RB from the camp cuts if they feel he can contribute on ST. They have hitched their wagon in Lamar Miller as the feature back and believe Foreman will return this season without a significant drop off in ability (whether right or wrong).

The question is… at this point in time, are the Texans legitimate SB contenders for this upcoming season? I say yes.

"Experts" not associated with the Texans are picking us. Vegas has us as the 3rd favorite to win the AFC championship.

So I say currently, this franchise is fielding a team that has a decent chance.
Aren't you forgetting that BOB is the coach? Just being realistic.

No one realistically should be putting the Texans in the SB this season. No way that these talking heads predicting a Texans SB would be putting their own real money where their mouths are..................as an all or none, which is what they are doing when they are predicting the top spot for the Texans.

So you're saying the Texans have NO shot...?

you've been hanging around steelb too much.

I go with that. I mean I'm hard-core Texans fan, I'm totally invested in the team but my hope for this year record-wise is that we win enough games to somehow get into the play-offs and I sure don't expect that, it's just the best I think realistically we can hope for. Now if one wants to be downright silly, OK talk SB.

No one realistically was putting the Eagles in the SB last season. But it happened.

That's not what I said in my post. Being realistic is different than giving the Texans "NO shot." You couldn't say the Bills or the Browns have NO shot, but realistically they have much less chance of reaching the Big Game than the Texans.

The Texans were 4-12 last year, but this isn't a 4-12 team in 2018. Outside of New England, every team in the AFC has question marks. I don't know how you are defining realistic. The Bills, Browns, Jets, and Dolphins going to the superb owl is unrealistic. The Pats going would be filed under the very realistic to likely columns. Any other team could catch lightning in a bottle. And if all goes well, the Texans have as much lightning to bottle as any other AFC team.

I was just messing with you. I do think (if healthy - which should go w/o saying) we're much closer to the Steelers/Patriots than the Bills/Browns.

Speaking of random thoughts. Suppose the Jets hitch their star to Darnell and put Bridgewater on the trading block.

Would y'all give him a shot to battle Weeden for the back up QB spot and how much would you give up to get him?

Bridgewater is only on a 1 year deal. Not a lot of value for a player you hope won't play. If something happens to Deshaun though, I would give up a 3rd day pick.

Teddy has been very accurate prior to injury and is long ways past his surgery. His injury sounds much as did Jaryd Jones-Smith whom the Texans have gambled on. Bridgewater's deal ($5 m) is way too much too risk IMO. Jets need to cut him as if traded his contract is guaranteed game one. If we can get him to sign our deal if he falls to us I would risk a lesser deal.

You think 4-5 mil is too much to pay for a quality backup? Isn't that Nick Foles salary range.
I know Weeden is making about 800-900K. But you get what you're willing to pay for.

Jones-Smith is on a $1.7 million dollar 3 year contract............as you implied................low risk (for good reason)..............the contrast to Bridgewater is night and day. IMO, Bridgewater, because of his build (and his previous injury) is a high risk for another major injury.

Not for healthy, solid QB but we don't know if he is. Weeden has not done anything. Foles has.

Nothing in the preseason so far has either excited me or depressed me.

Ejifore looks promising though, he seems a high value pick considering he's a 6th rounder.

Nothing to do now but wait for the Patsies game and see what's what.

17 observations: Texans fall to Rams
John Harris
Texans Analyst

The bad news is that the Texans took an 'L' on Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum in Los Angeles, but there was plenty of good news as well.

Here are my observations from the 21-20 defeat at the hands of the LA Rams.

1. The majority of the first defense made its way on the field for the first time in, well, a long dadgum time. That unit needed to be dominant with the Rams offensive starters getting the day off. It was and it forced a turnover, something it failed to do consistently last season.

2. Kareem Jackson started the game at safety then moved to cornerback for the following two series. It was when he was aligned at corner that he got the pick that led to the Texans first touchdown. The Texans were short a few corners today so Kareem slid over and played it well.

3. I’ve seen J.J. Watt in training camp every single day so I wasn’t surprised that he went out and shined right away. He shook a little rust off and made a few plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

4. Who we hadn’t seen much of in training camp outside of this week, though, was Jadeveon Clowney. He batted a pass that nearly became an interception and was seemingly his natural menace-self throughout his two series in the game.

5. Safety Tyrann Mathieu was as excited as I’ve seen anyone for a preseason game. Prior to the game, an NFL Films camera got in his face and he told everyone “I’M PLAYING TODAY!” I love having that guy on this defense and it’s just scratching the surface of what it can do. Next stop: Foxboro September 9th and a date with Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr.

6. The defense wasn’t at 100% on the day without Aaron Colvin, Dylan Cole and, of course, Whitney Mercilus. Those three should be ready to roll on September 9th and hopefully Kevin Johnson can get well and back on the field sooner than later. When this defense gets full attendance, it could be a scary group.

7. Offensive lineman Martinas Rankin was activated off the PUP list this week and he was a much needed shot in the arm for the offensive line unit. He came into the game at left tackle and also played guard, logging a significant number of plays for his first contact since the 2017 Tax Slayer Bowl on December 30th. He’s going to be a massively important piece for this offensive line and he’s going to find his way onto the field at some point, as long as he can stay healthy.

8. On the first play after Kareem Jackson’s interception, running back Alfred Blue ran right behind right guard Chad Slade and right tackle Kendall Lamm, powering into the end zone for the first points of the game.

9. The run game did have some pop to it in the first quarter as Blue ran into the end zone, relatively unscathed and as he reeled off a 36-yard run late off the left side behind Rankin and left guard David Quessenberry.

10. Deshaun Watson threw an interception down the field in the first quarter, yet I’m convinced that he wouldn’t try to get greedy, if you will, in a regular season situation. I’ve seen him do that in practice too, especially when he knows that his reps are nearing an end. So, yes, the turnover isn’t a great look, but I’m not completely worried that will happen once the season begins in earnest in Foxboro.

11. Quarterback Brandon Weeden had some up and down moments. The end of the first half drive, after a fortuitous pass interference call on 3rd and 19, was outstanding. The interception earlier at the end of the first quarter was not so outstanding. Something was off about that play because no one blocked defensive end Ethan Westbrooks, who had a free shot on Weeden.

12. After the 3rd and 19 pass interference near the end of the half, Weeden and his receivers clicked. He hit Sammie Coates on a deep sideline route for 32 yards. He then hit Braxton Miller for 16 yards down to the two. Two plays later, he found Braxton again for the touchdown.
THE REST OF THE STORY

We had him in 2014......but let him go when he developed appendicitis just before TC began................

I thought it was a "TC battle" that Boswell had actually outperformed Fat Randy, but in typical Texans fashion, they went with the incumbent draft pick instead and cut Bos...

My memory of it is a bit hazy, but sounds like how they woulda handled it

Both were sort of inconsistent in accuracy in TC. Where Bullock had the edge was kicking it into the EZ........Bozwell was still feeling the effects of the cut into his belly.

I am excited to see all of our injured players from last year get on the field again.

Watt, Watson, Merciless, and the other 49 players I can’t think of right now.

I’m hoping the Texans find themselves in a position in the 2019 draft to get a young QB to groom as a viable backup to Watson. The offense w/o Watson is completely inept.

The problem with having a really good backup QB is someone is always going to be trying to steal him. And really good QBs usually like to be the starter. We have absolutely no need for a good backup QB.

Signed,
Bill O'Brien

But on a serious note, I'd have been happy signing Colin Kaepernick but you guys were right. Bob McNair was never going to okay such a signing. Even though he shook Kaep's hand at that collusion deposition here in Houston earlier this year. Back in March.

We could have brought in a decent backup QB before training camp and OTAs. They could have already been somewhat acclimated to Bill O'Brien's offensive system. Weeden and Webb aren't the answer. They're both horrible.

If Deshaun is hurt again we're unlikely to win more than a game or two.

Landry Jones? the only guy in the league who can stop Antonio Brown? I dont know much about Dobbs other than he is the rocket scientist from Tennessee. Lynch has looked awful for 3 years now
A mobile QB with good running skills.........but with poor footwork leading to poor accuracy and repeated high WTF interception rate.

so he hasnt really progressed from college. I dont see any potential QB cuts that really make me all to excited. Maybe RG3 since he has looked decent, but I don't see the ravens letting him go with how raw Jackson looks

I am setting up a product distributorship prior to the beginning of the season in order to fill a great need here in Houston. It's difficult to place a price on happiness. So going on the premise that money can't bring you happiness, I figure to make a fortune (an introductory offer of a meager $50/for 1 month supply, followed by a very reasonable $100/month thereafter) on fans, players and coaches.............. If successfull, I will continue to offer it throughout the regular season, playoffs, and subsequent offseasons and preseasons and regular seasons...........with a generous 0.001% discount for annual contracting with autoship..........

I still would take Dobbs over Webb if Dobbs cut.
2016 stats at U. Tennessee: 225/357 2,946 yds. 63.3% @8.26 per pass. 27 TDs. -12 INTs which is above 2:1 ratio. 12 TD rushing.
2015: 208/344 2291 59.6 %@ 6.6 per. 15 Yrs -5 It's. 11 TDs rushing. Rookie year he played behind Roethlisberger.
