A team-by-team 2018 scouting report for the AFC South:
JAGUARS
2017 record: 10-6
Key additions: OG Andrew Norwell, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, WR Donte Moncrief, DL Taven Bryan.
Key losses: CB Aaron Colvin, WR Allen Hurns, TE Mercedes Lewis, LB Paul Posluszny, WR Allen Robinson.
Outlook: With the NFL’s best defense to go with a physical, productive and consistent running game featuring Leonard Fournette, the Jaguars should have a ball-control offense that can wear down defenses. Quarterback Blake Bortles must be a more consistent passer. An improved offensive line should benefit Bortles. The defense recorded 55 sacks, forced 33 turnovers and scored seven touchdowns in 2017. It might be difficult to match that performance. They feature the league’s premier starting cornerbacks in Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye. Their ferocious pass rush begins up front with Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, Dante Fowler and Malik Jackson. They have terrific linebackers in Myles Jack and Telvin Smith. Barring devastating injuries they avoided last season, they can defend their AFC South title and make another run at the Super Bowl.
Projected record: 11-5
TEXANS
2017 record: 4-12
Key additions: S Tyrann Mathieu, CB Aaron Colvin, RT Seantrel Henderson, RG Zach Fulton, LG Senio Kelemete, S Justin Reid, TE Jordan Akins.
Key losses: ILB Brian Cushing, QB Tom Savage, TE C.J. Fiedorowicz, G Xavier Su’a-Filo, OT Breno Giacomini, G Jeff Allen.
Outlook: To win their fifth AFC South title in eight years and their third under Bill O’Brien, the Texans must stay healthy. Another outbreak of injuries like last season when they had 23 players on injured reserve, including 13 starters, will be disastrous. The key is keeping quarterback Deshaun Watson healthy. The coaches and players believe with Watson they’re capable of winning anywhere. They hope to avoid an 0-2 start with road losses against New England and Tennessee. They play division opponents on the road early. Watson should have an improved offensive line and a decent running game led by Lamar Miller. The offensive strength will be the passing game with Watson throwing to DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller. J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus, D.J. Reader and Benardrick McKinney give them a splendid front seven. Cornerback Aaron Colvin and safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid have bolstered the secondary.
Projected record: 10-6
