Texans random thought of the day

That's the question which I just posed to you ?

The money side is one side.

I'm more of the best GM's are the ones that know personnel. Ricky was below avg. Imagine how bad his drafts would've looked if he didn't hit on most of his 1st rd picks.

I liked Gaine's draft this yr even though he was drafting with his hands tied behind his back.

Look at Gaine's 1st draft vs Ricky's draft history and you can easily see the difference between a personnel guy vs a yes man.

So if an organisation makes money, they are unsuccessful?

Not saying what you're inferring.

Ricky was successful making McNair $$$$ which is why he was there so long. As far as putting a team on the field this city could be proud of he was an abject failure. # The letterman jacket crew was embarrassing to this city. Sophmoric kind of crap under Ricky's leadership

There is ZERO chance that Kubiak (or dang near any coach) approved the letter jackets. That came from management.

Don't agree at all. But in this instance I don't think there was an approval, only an acquiescence. As I recall, 2 of the players went out and bought them as a surprise. Nobody HC or GM objected after the fact.

Yeah no. I'm still at absolute zero. There's nothing in Kubiak's history that even hints that he'd allow extra curricular like that, and not ignorant of the team he said 'no' when he found out. Somebody above him said 'what's the harm' while thinking 'we can sell this'. And then we lost, and then 2013 followed.

Drunk posting, I have no idea if I'm reading things correctly.

They will probably be worth money in the near future.

I don't think anyone is arguing for it to be the cause of losing a football game so much as a symptom of something that should have been cleaned up in preparation for trying to win a football game.

It was a sign of the culture of the team. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the type of culture that Kubiak was trying to promote.

The truth is we don't know if it was any of that. We just know it was bad optics, so if it had been "Letterman jackets benefiting X children's charity" we wouldn't even be talking about it right now.

Scouting report: AFC South

John McClain , Houston Chronicle Aug. 20, 2018 Updated: Aug. 20, 2018 8 a.m.

A team-by-team 2018 scouting report for the AFC South:

JAGUARS

2017 record: 10-6

Key additions: OG Andrew Norwell, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, WR Donte Moncrief, DL Taven Bryan.

Key losses: CB Aaron Colvin, WR Allen Hurns, TE Mercedes Lewis, LB Paul Posluszny, WR Allen Robinson.

Outlook: With the NFL’s best defense to go with a physical, productive and consistent running game featuring Leonard Fournette, the Jaguars should have a ball-control offense that can wear down defenses. Quarterback Blake Bortles must be a more consistent passer. An improved offensive line should benefit Bortles. The defense recorded 55 sacks, forced 33 turnovers and scored seven touchdowns in 2017. It might be difficult to match that performance. They feature the league’s premier starting cornerbacks in Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye. Their ferocious pass rush begins up front with Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, Dante Fowler and Malik Jackson. They have terrific linebackers in Myles Jack and Telvin Smith. Barring devastating injuries they avoided last season, they can defend their AFC South title and make another run at the Super Bowl.

Projected record: 11-5

TEXANS

2017 record: 4-12

Key additions: S Tyrann Mathieu, CB Aaron Colvin, RT Seantrel Henderson, RG Zach Fulton, LG Senio Kelemete, S Justin Reid, TE Jordan Akins.

Key losses: ILB Brian Cushing, QB Tom Savage, TE C.J. Fiedorowicz, G Xavier Su’a-Filo, OT Breno Giacomini, G Jeff Allen.

Outlook: To win their fifth AFC South title in eight years and their third under Bill O’Brien, the Texans must stay healthy. Another outbreak of injuries like last season when they had 23 players on injured reserve, including 13 starters, will be disastrous. The key is keeping quarterback Deshaun Watson healthy. The coaches and players believe with Watson they’re capable of winning anywhere. They hope to avoid an 0-2 start with road losses against New England and Tennessee. They play division opponents on the road early. Watson should have an improved offensive line and a decent running game led by Lamar Miller. The offensive strength will be the passing game with Watson throwing to DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller. J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus, D.J. Reader and Benardrick McKinney give them a splendid front seven. Cornerback Aaron Colvin and safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid have bolstered the secondary.

Projected record: 10-6

I say let this season play out first before declaring this draft a success. TT has been plenty excited about RS drafts before the season even started.

For the record I dont think this was a world beating draft. I wish Gaine would've drafted another OT.

With that said, from reports the draft has yielded upgrades at TE/S. Which is all you can expect from a draft lacking picks in rds 1-2.

Reid/Akins/Thomas should become solid players for the next 5 yrs. Coutee is a wildcard. This dude has the ability to do some special things. The draft accomplished what Gaine/BOB wanted, giving Watson more playmakers.

But you're right, we need to let things play out before making judgements. I just like to predict what I think draft classes are going to look like 5 yrs from now. My prediction is this is a solid draft class.

Regarding 2018 Draft. Have to include Watson in any discussion/success. If they hit on just one 3rd rd. pick (Akins) that would be a bonus. Gaine rolled the dice on this past years tackle class and missed, hey it happens with this organization. Culture is we can homeschool this position into more value. Taking wild stabs with receiver/returner/athlete prospects have already taken its toll and inversely affects lack of talent on the offensive line.

I was under the impression that Michael Lombardi was anything but a Texans fan ? Maybe I've got him confused with somebody else ?
Anyway I just finished watching him on Rich Eisen's show this morning and Lombardi is a huge D.Watson fan, so much so he's got Watson and the
Texans going to the SB.

So does this make us a legit SB contender? I know a lot of people in here complain that this franchise has never been a legitimate SB contender... even though in the past, other “experts” has picked us as well.

Nope, if the Texans are one of the teams that make it to the AFCCG then they were contenders. Or if they play the Pats to a nail biting game and lose around earlier they were contenders. IMHO

A talking head saying you're a contender in the preseason doesn't make you a contender.

The question is… at this point in time, are the Texans legitimate SB contenders for this upcoming season? I say yes.

"Experts" not associated with the Texans are picking us. Vegas has us as the 3rd favorite to win the AFC championship.

So I say currently, this franchise is fielding a team that has a decent chance.

They should be a contender if everybody stays healthy. (A big IF)

We wont know how healthy they will be until the playoffs start.

But as of right now they along with every other team is 0-0 so I guess they're all contenders.

I'm wanting to watch the 1st part of the season to declare them contenders. Beating the Pats/Tacks to start the season on the road would be a great start.

We have reached a point where we could contend - if we stay healthy. We’re not a top contender because of depth. But on paper, I’m liking our starting 22.

The OL still has to prove themselves, but should be improved over last season. Although not what OB would like, because the strength in our offensive talent lies in our receivers, we’re going to be a pass oriented offense, which will in turn help our weaker running game. Defensively, with Crennel at the helm, we’re going to be dominate.

He’s a smart man. Nobody’s perfect but always worth listen.
He also talked about the AFC South in general and how it's become a relatively strong division of late and shown improvement.
While he complimented the Jags on their defense he was crititical of the Jags though for having what he called an "endowment attitue" about Bortles which I took to be a criticism of the organizations all-in attitude on Bortles.

You didn't even list the guy who has been the best player so far from this draft. Duke Ejiofor has looked like a top 1st round defensive draft pick out there so far...and it hasn't been against backups either.

He's making it look easy and is owning starting offensive lineman on the field. Mitchell Schwartz was named 2nd team All Pro last season and he got his lunch ate by Ejiofor. The guy looks like a potential top tier starter this season for this defense.

This has been a excellent draft class so far with the potential to only get better, which is amazing considering that we didn't even have a 1st or 2nd round pick.

I'm not sure what thread is most appropriate for this, but it seems random enough to fit here. I'm a huge Watson fan, living just outside Clemson and having attended Clemson. I certainly hope we don't need a backup QB all year, except perhaps to rest Watson when we blow some people out. :cowboy1:

I also don't expect my house to burn down, but I still come out of my pocket for fire insurance.

Therefore, I am confused as to why we haven't spent more significant resources on a more significant backup QB.

Weeden looks ok, but I would much prefer someone that is more mobile in the pocket. And Joe Webb, bless his heart, is not the answer.

The Jets may want to deal Bridgewater. I realize he has had serious knee problems, but he is looking pretty good. The asking price may be too high for the risk, but his skill set is so close to Watson's, it seems it may not be quite so devastating should Watson go down again.

It's just hard for me to believe there are not better options out there than Weeden/Webb.

I dont really remember there being any decent back up QB free agents this offseason who fits the mobility bill. Well outside of the guy not allowed to play in the NFL, and rg3. While I would've been fine with rg3 as a camp arm I certainly wouldnt want to bank on him as my #2. Blaine gabbert maybe, idk I think Weeden is a decent back up I know he isnt mobile like Watson so you have to scratch that part of the game plan, but this is his 3rd offseason in the offense so we wont have to throw out to much of the playbook

Forgot to list him.

I didn't get to watch the game, but I'm going to watch the replay tomorrow. How did he look?

For me, the mobility part would be a preference, not a requirement. I would just like to see someone that was competent enough that we wouldn't lose all hope should Watson go down.

And I do realize finding a backup that would keep you competitive is no small thing.

And I do like Weeden's knowledge and experience, but let's face it, if he were capable of leading an NFL team, he wouldn't have been available.

Pittsburgh is going have to cut an intetesting QB. They have 4. There will be others cut. I know its hard to bring a qb in late.

I simply don't accept we currently have the best options available.

I mean I agree, but just from what i can remember i dont think Weeden was a bad choice for what was available given his time in our system. Normally if a good backup becomes available they go somewhere they have a chance to start

Injury history on our 2 recently worked out CBs (why I chose their monikers "Crash" and "Burn")

Teddy Williams sustained an Achilles rupture in 2013. He sustained a groin tear and a knee injury and was again placed on IR for the 2016 season. Williams didn't play for the Panthers in 2017 after being placed on IR due to a shoulder injury sustained during the last preseason game. In 7 years in the NFL, he has never started a game.

Zack Sanchez a 2016 UDFA was waived by the Panthers this past mid May with an injury designation for a significant quad tear. He did not play in 2017 due to several nagging injuries.
