Texans random thought of the day

Q: John, relating to tight ends, is a play call issue or do you believe our tightnends are not worth catching a pass? It seems game plans change every week, wouldn't they involve them more? Do you believe they'll make changes in the off season with our tightends as far as bringing on new ones?

A: Tight ends dropped four passes in one game. I think they were so surprised to have the ball come to them they couldn't handle it. I've never seen a team throw to a tight end less. That's play calling and game planning. Garrett Graham played well under the previous regime. Everyone had high hopes for Ryan Griffin until he got hurt. Now he's back. We'll see if he gets some passes thrown his way.
John McClain

Is Joseph actually having a resurgent season?

Haven't been able to see whole games the last few weeks, but he seems to be making some plays and playing with more energy.

Patrick Starr writes about the impact of some of our FA acquisitions. Buried in his review of Vince Wilfork, I find an interesting observation that I have commented on in numerous posts during the off season/pre season.
Vince Wilfork
The first half of 2015 has been a mixed bag for the big nose tackle, but it finally looks like the Texans have figured out how to use Wilfork as the season has gone on. He can be a force to deal with when he is fresh and ready to go. Early in the season, he was getting zoned off easily while the center created running lanes against him. The lack of preseason play for Wilfork and other veterans might have been part of the slow start but he has evened out his play as the season has moved on.

The Texans had Wilfork on the field for way too many plays to start the season and by the fourth quarter he was gassed, struggling to make an impact. When he is able to control two offensive lineman at the same time, the team's linebackers have looked better than expected. The defense is built around Wilfork eating up blockers and it is slowly coming together for the veteran.

Read a telling statistic............the Bengals have 41 players on their team that have only played for the Bengals.

Marvin Lewis has been their HC since 2003, & they've never won a playoff game. They've won the division three times, been to the playoffs six times.

It's funny how some will point to the Bengals as the model for success, but 8 years is too long for a HC without a Super Bowl appearance, or 10 years is too long for a GM... unless you're the Bengals.

Even funnier if you compare the Texans and Bengals W - L record for the last 8 years.

This is also known as building thru the draft, a process the Houston Texans are not familiar.
Well do you really want to build a team that doesn't know how to win a playoff game? Even the "poorly built" Texans have won two playoff games... and I don't even have to mention against who.

Do you really want to build a team who can only go to the playoffs twice in 13 years and their only two playoffs wins are against the Bengals????

I don't want to build either. I'm simply commenting on your post that's referring to the Bengals "knowing" how to build a team through the draft and the Texans don't.

I'm curious about what some of you guys think of Colt McCoy (QB) in general & as a possible good fit for us?? I watched all his games for Longhorns as I'm sure a lot of you did & I've seen most of the pro games he's started. One of the most recent ones that stands out is when he beat Cowboys last season At Dallas. I know his college stats well, he was as good as it gets but I don't know his pro stats off top of my head. But he's a real quality kid. Great head on his shoulders, team guy, very coachable, good athlete, good arm.....I don't think he's ever really landed w/the right team & coaches. Don't think he's ever "really" got a good chance. I'n going to check out his contract situation out of curiosity. I'm sure he would come at a discount if he thought he had a real chance to start for a team. This is a guy I can see Obrien really liking........................ Any opinions out there??
Any thoughts??
Any McCoy Pro statisticians out there??

I like Colt, and I'd like him in a Texans uniform. But I wouldn't like for that to be in any role more than a good backup and an occasional spot starter.

I see him as better than Hoyer & w/higher ceiling w/the right coach....What do you think? Also we know McNair hasn't ever paid big $$ for QB's in the last 12 yrs so that's not going to chang & McCoy would come at a good price.

I'm sorry you missed the point, Building thru the draft = better consistency. Better?

I think he's limited tool-wise, but he brings a bunch of intangible stuff that go hand in hand with the position. Maybe better than Hoyer, ok. I don't think his ceiling is floors above a Hoyer or Fitzy though. But that's just me.

What about him competing for starting role next yr???

Wouldn't be terrible if the idea is that we have a fresh, young, loaded prospect (early 2016 draft pick) learning and gnawing away right behind him.

I don't believe my team is competing for a trophy if Colt McCoy is competing to be the starting QB of the future for my team.

McNair spent real big money on Carr then 2 big money contracts for Schaub. It's only the last 2 years we've had bargain basement QBs.

McCoy hasn't been able to stay healthy.

McCoy is on a 1 year $1.5 mil contract so he will be available again next year as he was this.

Thanks for info on Mc Coy contract that's interesting he's free next yr.....would mind seeing him on our team competing next yr...he's a no drama guy too

Yea I like your idea about fresh young QB & McCoy....

I think like you...he brings some good intangibles....the kid has always been a winner w/great character....maybe I'm just ready to clean house this off season & start over w/entire team.....I'm through bitching about owner & coaches...just burned out on that...McNair Obrien Romeo aren't going anywhere....We just have to accept that & work w/what we have. I've been right there w/a lot of you on slamming this staff and I believe they deserve it but truth is we're all fans or we wouldnt be on this MB so (IMO) it's time for us to suck it up a little talk about what WOULD Possibly work here for us. IMO maybe we should "sip" the koolade w/ a equale amount of truth serum....I aiming for a reasonable balance

Forgive me if I err, but isn't his biggest problem a HISTORY of concussions which makes him a very high risk of recurrence?

Would you rather be in the Bengals position now or in the Texans position now?

The unofficial depth chart has Moore starting at safety again?

From healthy scratch back to starter?

I smell something fishy.....
I think GB has maybe 3-4 players that was not drafted by GB...amazing stat.
Watching a GB game early in the season, maybe week 1 or two, the broadcast showed a team photo and highlighted 2 players on the 53 not drafted by the Packers. I'm sure as the season has drawn on and injuries occur, the number has gone up. But even so, impressive.

Obrien stated on radio that this week begins a whole new season. He's putting first half of season behind them and starting fresh new season.
Any predictions on 2nd half of season record???

I'm guessing 3 wins out of 8

I wouldn't be surprised if we lost every game. I see 2 possibilities at the very end.

Mike Mohamed was released by the Saints. Looking at the bylaws the texans still have to wait to sign him, even though it signed with another team.

I will belly-laugh if this "whole new season" starts with Hoyer getting benched after 3Q
for Yates instead of Mallet.

Last time BoB substituted a Kubiak QB for his guy we won two games
in a row.. So there's that bit of sunshine still left in the pump..

And by substituted, you mean all three QB's on the roster had season ending injuries and they desperately called the one guy not on an active NFL roster who had been in TC that year and somewhat knew the playbook.

Not really surprising. Probably Mohamed being unrealistic about his status and the Saints desperate to find a viable MLB, back on the field too soon. Calf injuries are stubborn and not truly tested until in real game play. With three linebackers out due to injury, Mohamed was active immediately after only 5 days. He played STs last Sunday with 1 tackle in 12 plays. The Saints evidently also figured out that he was not ready.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole would expect the Texans, 49ers, Browns, and Jets to have interest in Matthew Stafford should he be made available in the offseason.

In a poll of five league GMs by Cole, they expect at least "3-4 teams" to have interest in Stafford because he's "too talented," while one GM said it would be "insanity" for the Lions to deal Stafford. He doesn't turn 28 until February and will be entering the theoretical "prime" of his career. Any of the four teams above would seem to make sense as a landing spot if the Lions want to move on. Stafford's base salaries in 2016 and 2017 of $17 million and $16.5 million respectively are more than affordable for a young-ish, above-average starter loaded with arm talent.

Just like coming back in the 2nd half of decided games, we'll come back in the 2nd half of the "fresh new season" once playoff seeings have been determined
