Texans random thought of the day

Was reading this article on Bleacher about FA still available and which team should pick up which player. Decent enough read.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...17-one-bargain-player-each-team-should-pursue

T.J. McDonald, S

When free agency began, young safety T.J. McDonald wouldn't have been a name listed among bargain-bin options. Yet here we are, nearly a month into free agency, and the 26-year-old is still looking for a new home.

The wait isn't going to do McDonald's bank account any favors, but it could be a godsend for the Houston Texans—especially after veteran Quintin Demps bolted in free agency.

For as well as Houston's league-leading defense played in 2016, the safety spots were arguably the weak link. Demps was easily the best of the bunch, ranking 12th at the position per Pro Football Focus in 2016.

McDonald didn't fare quite that well for the Los Angeles Rams, but he was a top-25 safety in pass coverage en route to 64 tackles, a sack and two interceptions.

That was something of a down season for the four-year veteran. Back in 2014 (he missed five games in 2015), McDonald topped 80 solos and 100 total tackles for the Rams, demonstrating his willingness to get dirty in run support.

In all honesty, the Texans aren't apt to do much of anything in free agency until the fate of a certain veteran quarterback is decided.

However, if Houston wants to avoid opening the year with a huge question mark at the tail end of a defense that carried the club in 2016, checking out the menu at Mickey D's isn't a bad idea.

I'll have a Big Mac and a medium fry, please.

They also have Ryan Clady as someone that should be picked up by the OT needy Panthers. Well hell we have a gapping hole at RT. He was IR'd last year with a torn rotator cuff and his second year option was not picked up. Sounds like the type of prove it deals we should be looking into.

T.J. McDonald has been suspended without pay for the first eight games of the 2017 regular season.

McDonald, 26, violated the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

In an email to ESPN, his agent Andrew Kessler wrote: "It is very unfortunate that T.J. will miss the first eight games this season, but he and I are both looking forward to him returning to regular-season action when eligible."

Other than that 2-14, the last 6 years have seen winning seasons. The previous 4 years before that, you could criticise him but he has been better than the majority since then.
9-7 is better than most - if Osweiler was even 25% better than the unexpected dumpster fire he turned out to be we could very likely have been 11-5.
And quit comparing Texans to the Patriots - they have a goat qb and hc. Every other team in the league is behind them too.
Like I said, you are a hoot.

Who should I compare them too?

Where I come from is you have to beat the best to be the best and that includes outworking them in the offseason. Do you really think Ricky has outworked BB this offseason?

If they even played the Pats competitively with Jacoby Freaking Brissett playing QB you're argument may have carried more weight.

You probably just got finished with your last glass of Texans red Kool-Aid during lunch. Lay down and take a nap, all of this hard thinking appears to be taxing you. I'm sure that Bob/Cal/Ricky McNair are doing the same right about now so y'all have something in common. What I know Little Ricky isn't doing right now is scouring the FA market like BB has been known to do.

And you know that how?
And who might he find?
If you beat the Patriots, there's a real good chance you win the SB.
As has been shown, that is easier said than done.
They are going to be tough to toss for the next three years while Brady is there - even Rodgers and the Packers can't win - or the Falcons with a 25 point lead with 17 minutes to go.
Keep smoking that stuff whatever it is if you think any other team than the Pats will make it to the SB on the AFC side for the next few years.
Oh, and if you come up with some SB caliber players in FA, let us know.

They lost to JACOBY FREAKING BRISSETT.

To answer your question, Gilmore/Ealy/Burkhead/Cooks etc... have been added to the Pats. Who have the Texans added?

Who won the SB 2 yrs ago? I'm pretty sure it wasn't the Pats. The fact that the Pats have 2 QB's better than any Texans QB and the Texans lost to the Pats with their 3rd string QB in embarrassing fashion should speak plenty to you about the Texans FO and the state of the franchise and how far they have to go to catch up. (Which they will never do with Rick Smith in charge as long as BB is in Foxboro)

Using Brady is just a losers excuse. Is Ricky not even supposed to try to catch up? Because that's what he's been doing this offseason. Do you think if Ricky gets Romo he stays healthy and lets say generously they add 3 starters in the draft (And I don't mean Ricky's XSF type starters) that the Texans will have enough to beat the Pats. I don't. That's why instead of losing starters in FA they should've been adding starters.

Rick has always said that he likes to fill holes in FA so that he can go with BPA (A lie) in the draft. Why did his philosophy change? Could it be that he's trying to run BOB out of town like he did Kubiak?

Change? Don't we have this, "The Texans aren't doing anything in FA?" Discussion every year? Even the year we got Jjo & Manning we were complaining they were playing into Nnamdi's hand. That we should move on & go after Jjo several days before it happened.

Last season is the only season I remember the Texans doing anything the first week.

The Texans don't normally go after the big names, where teams often overpay & you're normally complaining about it.

The change isn't this year, so much as returning to the norm.

Jay Cutler: Won't necessarily play in 2017
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cutler (shoulder) may decide not to play in 2017, WGN's Adam Hoge reports.

There are only a few franchises still in the market for starting quarterbacks and most of those teams probably prefer to go in a younger direction. Cutler was scheduled to visit with the Jets before they signed Josh McCown, who was brought in to compete with Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. The Texans could be a fit if they don't acquire Tony Romo, but it was previously reported that Houston isn't interested in Cutler. With his 34th birthday coming up in April, the veteran signal-caller may ultimately decide to retire or take a year off. His shoulder likely will be healthy enough for him to pass a physical in the coming months, but his desire to play may be contingent upon having a clear path to a starting job.

Brian Cushing: We’re ready to take the next step
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/31/brian-cushing-were-ready-to-take-the-next-step/

The Texans have made the playoffs in four of the last six seasons and they’ve won a game in three of those appearances, but all of those wins have come in the Wild Card round.

The last of those wins came in January when they beat the Raiders before being outscored 17-3 in the second half of a 34-16 loss to the Patriots. The Texans lost a couple of defensive contributors in cornerback A.J. Bouye and safety Quintin Demps in free agency, but defensive end J.J. Watt should be back and linebacker Brian Cushing still believes the time has come for the Texans to win some games later in the postseason.

“Getting to the playoffs isn’t good enough for us anymore, and we understand that,” Cushing said, via the Houston Chronicle. “We’ve been in games and we were in a dogfight with New England until the third quarter and they go on to win the Super Bowl. I think it says a little bit about where we are and at the same time about how much further we have to go and we understand it. We’re close, but we have a way to go. We’re ready to take the next step.”

Tom Savage would be the starting if the season started today, something that Cushing said he’s not worrying about because he is “just playing defense and that’s it.” It’s probably fair to say that others will spend time worried about the situation under center because that’s been the biggest stumbling block in Houston for some time.

He needs to STFU & stop talking about things that have nothing to do with him. He already mentioned in his post season press conference that he's just the coach.

He should stick to his standard answer, "I really don't know." & defer the tough questions to the man in charge of FA & the draft. Ricky McNair
Orrrrr maybe Smith ISN'T totally in control of the draft like some would have you believe.

Maaaaybe O'Brien has something to say because the process is like exactly as McNair said, it's a collaborative effort where consensus is reached on who to draft.

Saying wrong sh!t, i.e., the draft is all on Smith and O'Brien has nothing to do with it, over and over a bunch of times doesn't magically make it become right.

oh and where is the link to that "I'm just the coach" quote.

Kubiak's greatest strength and greatest weakness with the Texans is that he was 'THE MAN'. He was obviously the smartest man in the room and given too many freedoms because of it - one of those being the approval of Rick Smith at GM. Other coaching options are certainly on the list as well.

What the detractors such as your self will never realize is that without Kubiak, we don't spend a few years whining about mediocrity during the purge. We would spend 2006+ fantasizing about a 6-10 season instead of 'FIRE EVERYBODY!!!' that Kubiak regressed to. We would be looking up at the Browns. With almost anyone else, Capers gets fired and we have an experimental coach without a GM and a rookie Owner ... and that band of idiots has to replace 52 of our 53 players in 4 years (while dumping salary the first 3 years). Who is your coach through that (saddled to Carr and Sherman)? Who gets that impossibility past 4 wins? What coach has to pull to punt Sherman and tell McNair to get out of the way long enough to build a team capable of 12 wins and 9 probowlers in spite of management -- until the ceiling collapses on the one person who got us there. Kubiak is a horrible coach and stupidly loyal and too predictable ... and we would be worried about winning the draft instead of dominating the division without the insane amount of building he did that apparently goes unnoticed.
You make good points.

Brian Smith, writing in the Chronicle this morning, has it right. The Texans "like" Tom Savage, but they're not "excited" about him.

And there it is, excitement is what's driving this craving to draft a QB with our first pick, or at worst, our second pick. There just isn't excitement going with Savage and Weeden. There is excitement going with the unknown and new.

We have two veteran QB's would give us improved production from the most important position and would get us back into the post season. But this is not important. What is important is the excitement of new expectations.

Here's a thought: Not that I care a lot, but something tells me Brock Osweiler will stick with the Browns and do very well as their QB next year. Proving once again that our QB whisperer is, well . . .

Pro football reference has nada on Kevin Rodgers.
Very impressive predraft college numbers..........if it weren't in a small college league.

Henderson State University

Kevin Rodgers, QB, Henderson State
Particulars: 6-foot-3, 215 pounds
Buzz: Rodgers has been a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy -- which goes to the top player in Division II -- in each of the past two seasons. Last season, he threw for 4,807 yards with 40 TDs and 12 picks, and completed 68.95 percent of his passes. He threw for 4,002 yards and 41 TDs in 2012. He has thrown for at least 400 yards nine times in the past two seasons and has 18 300-yard games in that span. Rodgers, who already has graduated and is working on his MBA, holds school records for passing yards, touchdown passes and completions. Fans will get a chance to see Rodgers on the CBS Sports Network on Sept. 18, when Henderson State (which is located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas) plays host to Southeastern Oklahoma.

It's interesting to look back at this history.

7th Heaven: Texans history in Rd 7 of NFL Draft

We're three weeks away from the start of the NFL Draft.

Round 1 begins on Thursday, April 27 in Philadelphia, and the Texans own the 25th pick. Over the next week, we'll go round-by-round and examine all the Texans picked in the Draft.

The Texans also own the 25th pick of the 7th round, and that selection is 243rd overall.

Looking back over the 18 7th-rounders in team history, the Texans have been successful at plucking contributors over the last decade.

Colorado State wide receiver David Anderson was a 7th-rounder in 2006, and he wound up starting 10 games in six seasons with the club. He finished with 82 receptions for 895 yards as a Texan, and caught

A year after Anderson was selected, the Texans found a contributor again in linebacker Zac Diles out of Kansas State. With 30 starts at weakside linebacker in the 4-3 defense, Diles tallied 164 tackles as a Texan in five seasons with the club.

Troy Nolan was an Arizona State safety who would start seven times for Houston, and pick off three passes in a trio of seasons.

But the two most recent 7th-round success stories are still with the team: right tackle Derek Newton and safety Andre Hal. The former was picked in 2011, and became a starter in 2012. He's played in 82 games total, with 68 starts. The latter was a 2014 selection, and has started 22 times at safety. He's picked off six passes in his short career, and scored on a 31-yard interception return in 2015.

none of the texans players would have made the cowboys top 10 with their score

EDIT:

but honestly, I would like to see the numbers only from 2002 to now

I don't see an easy option to sort by era. Really interesting to see some of these numbers. I don't know how the other chart got some of the 200+ ones since the career chart tops out at Manning's 177. I started looking into this to kind of compare QBs.

Aikman was a career 97; AJ is a 95 and JJ is currently an 82. Longevity and productivity play into this

that's why the texans are starting at a disadvantage. of course if you compare the top ten in a 50 years old team with the top 10 of a 15 years old team, the oldest team is going to come out as the best one.

comparing from 2002 to now still would not be fair, since most teams playing in 2002 had a system already in place while the texans were born out of nowhere and needed some time to start clicking
