Texans random thought of the day

We'll see how many of these offensive team weaknesses they address in this draft over the next couple of days.We need a QB. RB. TE.

Don't know that this has been posted yet.

Reed joined JJ up in Wisconsin to workout in the offseason.

If the Texans are going to get their best players on the field at the same time, Brooks Reed finally may have to move to inside linebacker in their base 3-4 defense.

Reed, a starter on the strong side for three seasons, may have to move inside next to Brian Cushing to make room for J.D. Clowney, the first overall pick in the draft.

Whitney Mercilus, who registered seven sacks in his first season as a starter, could replace Reed. The easiest transition for Clowney in the base defense would be on the weak side, where he’d have limited coverage responsibilities before dropping and rushing in passing situations.

“They have for the past three years,” Reed said on Monday about the coaches talking to him about the possibility of moving inside. “Obviously, we drafted some talent. The coaches will adapt, switching the players as need be.”

Last year, outside linebackers Sam Montgomery (third round) and Trevardo Williams (fourth) were selected with the hope that one would eventually be able to start, allowing Reed to move inside.

Montgomery was waived midway through his rookie year, and Williams spent the season on injured reserve.

“From the beginning, I’ve been preparing to play inside ‘backer if I had to,” Reed said. “I’m ready if they do (move him).

“It’s a little different. They’re different positions in a 3-4. It’s something I’ve done in the past, minimally. It’s something I’m up for if it happens.”

To prepare for the season, Reed went to Wisconsin to work out with J.J. Watt in February and March.

“I was there for a couple of months training with J.J. and maybe more after OTAs,” he said. “You can imagine what it’s like. It’s tough. I’m looking to raise my game this year and help this team.

“Me and J.J. talked about it before the season ended. We talked about how we wanted to get better. I wanted to get to a different environment, get in the cold. I thought it was kind of fun.”

Watt wanted to rough it. Training back home in Wisconsin, he said he slept on a mattress he placed on a friend’s floor.

So where did Reed sleep?

“Uh, I was in a hotel room,” he said.

Interesting. Maybe because they bought used and we bought new, and still have the same amount of Super Bowls. It still surprised me to see that, but it feels even better that we get under their skin.

i mentioned this in the other thread, but id like to see chita johnson snapping the ball from center. oh boy. oh, and i want to play qb.:kingkong:

Opposing teams are going to blitz the crap out of the Texans until whomever is playing the QB position proves that they can beat it. I don't think we have a QB on the roster that can do that right now.

My random thought of the day...

Looks like Tennessee and Kentucky hates the Texans the most

Pretty self-explanatory why Tennessee hates the Texans.

As for Kentucky, NFL fans of that state are likely to be fans of the 3 closest NFL markets: Nashville, Indy and Cincy. 2 of those are division foes of the Texans, and the other is the only team that the Texans have ever beaten in the playoffs.........and twice at that!

Just using Mallet as an example, if NE were to waive Mallet in the final cut, how does this work as regard to his signing with a new team? Is it under his old contract? Or is a new contract negotiated? What if the two parties are unable to come to an agreement? Does he become a free agent, or does the second team get their chance at signing him? What time periods are in place for negotiations and coming to an agreement?

If a player is just released, as opposed to being waived, does he become a free agent? For the original team holding the player's contract, what is the difference in choosing one option over the other?

First of all, Mallet is going nowhere. But if he were to be "released," NE would hold no rights to him at all......and he would essentially be a FA, fre to negotiate with any team.

It depends on how many years the player has been in the NFL. I'm not the expert on this but my understanding is that if the player has been in the league less than 4 years and they are released, they go onto the waiver wire. Then teams are able to claim that player depending on the rank of their finish the previous season. If multiple teams put in a claim, the team who finished the worst gets him. This year, we trump everyone. If we want a waived player, we've got him... and I think we've got him at his original contract.

If we want to renegotiate a player's contract, I think we've got to let them clear waivers and then pick them up as a free agent (which is risky if we want them)... but don't quote me on that. I could have that part wrong. (EDIT: I originally had "don't want to renegotiate" and I think that's wrong.)

If a player has 4 or more years in the NFL (which is calculated by percentage of time spent on the 53 man roster, iirc), then they become a free agent and are willing to negotiate a new contract with whomever they please.

I think you nailed TPN. That's the way I've heard it as well.

Earlier this evening I watched the Texans Huddle on Fox Southwest (a treat here in A-town). Thirty minute show and about half was actually about the team.

I'm all for the good things done in the community, but half? Probably won't rush to see another edition since I can come here for 15 minutes and learn twice as much about the team.

How many redzone TOs has our defense gotten?

I recall 2 from Washington
(missed the raiders game)
1 from the Giants
1 from the Bills

I get Texans huddle here in Houston. I like the show. I didn't mind the story on DeAndre. It was interesting and shows a different side of players. Not every week is going to be jammed with game analysis.

Agreed. Should be, but isn't. Anyway, it's a show I can see or not. Boring commercialism more than anything else.

Just reading the Bills gameday thread. They thought Watt was deliberately trying to hurt EJ. To their credit, the sentiment wasn't unanimous but it was overwhelming nonetheless.

I would like to riddle them this.....Why would the Texans want to get EJ out of the game?? Stupid Yanks.

Hopkins has scored more than J.J.

Yes.

:pop:

He has.

I blame profootballreference.com. I think it took them a while to update their site and I saw the overall Texans' scoring stats after they updated Watt's stats but before they updated Deandre's... because I swear it was Bullock and then Watt when I wrote that.

Jerry Jones was brought to tears in 2002 when the Texans won 19-10

Pats vs Bills was on Fox today, Titans vs Texans will be, too. I'm guessing this has something to do with all the Thursday night games being on CBS.

Tennessee Titans @TennesseeTitans
The Oct. 26 #Titans-#Texans game will now be televised on FOX instead of CBS as part of #NFL's "cross-flexing." Kickoff remains at noon CT.

I live in Austin so I always have to check the Cowboys schedule when the Texans are playing on Fox. The Boys play the Skins on MNF that week so no worries.. The Eagles game, on the other hand, the Cowboys are playing a noon games. I'm hoping the Cowboys or Texans get flexed to 3:25 that week.

Boy, I bet they're excited to get that game.

No kidding. I'm guessing CBS had an option to protect some of their games, and Fox gets to pick from the leftovers.

Edit: Actually I have no idea what's going on with that because Seattle-Carolina is on CBS that same week.

There is no team in sports I despise more than this weeks opponent .... Hated them as long as I can remember. I hope they never win another game .... unless they play the Tinbreds.

I still cringe with hatred when I see or hear Rod Woodson. I literally had to change the channel when he'd appear on NFLN. Can't stand that dude

As much as I once despised the Steelers, I now despise the Colts.

Eh, it's hard for me to despise a team that has Luck as their QB. He's just one of those guys that's almost impossible to dislike.

The titans and their 'Deliverance' type fan base, on the other hand, can chew ass.

I find it strange that he would say he doesn't have time for a girlfriend. This is no biggie, to each his own.

But am I wrong to think it's possible that JJ Watt is on steroids or HGH?
Is he too good to be true as far as being a clean athlete with no PED's?

If the Colts were continually knocking Houston out of the play-offs, I could see it. As it stands, the only reason to hate them now, is because we've never been as good as them. They win the division because they win more games than we do... can't fault them for that when we make it so easy.

That's why I can't even call Texans/Colts a true rivalry, because they never beat us in a game that meant anything, largely because we rarely won enough games to have any of them mean anything.

Cincy should be hating us, but looks like they're having the last laugh right now.

I don't see the Texans/Colts as a rivalry. I don't give a rat's ass about "rivalry."

I hate them because they had Peyton Manning for so long and we couldn't beat them and then they sucked and got Luck and instead of being a bust, Luck is turning into another top level franchise QB.

I hate them because they have totally dominated us for the entire course of our existence.

Saying that we shouldn't hate the Colts because it's not a rivalry is like saying the slave shouldn't hate his master because of the power differential. That's EXACTLY who we should hate.

I don't care as much about the Jags or even the Titans anymore because we have a much better track record against them. It's the Colts I want to drag down off their throne and dominate for the next century.

Repped. Instead of just beating them I want the Texans to ******* rub the victories in their faces the way Peyton Manning did to us all those years..
