Texans random thought of the day

And I think most teams look at that way.

Which is why I think someone like British Brooks is an easy PS stash.
I’m not quite sure what to think of this. I think this is a chance for some GM’s to improve their roster looking intuitively at upside primarily in a rookie (including undrafted) player that has flashed in preseason at a deep position on a team. I would guess this is about the only option for teams like the Texans who are higher on the waiver claim list but want to take a shot at improving a roster position. I think releases have plenty of film so you know what you are getting so they tend more to be stopgap. Before we cut a young player we better be prepared to lose somebody we really don’t want to. As the wicked witch of the west said…”these things must be done delicately”.

It is pretty rare for undrafted rookies who get cut to then be claimed on waivers to my knowledge.

Yeah I know but NC really went far out of his way to sign BB and everything they threw at him, all at needed positions, he’s shown he could more than handle and with some sexy flashes. Patterson was a late rounder who can backup three positions like BB ( four counting ST) so I know this is highly valued for the Texans. Why not for the Ravens or Niners?

It's not that it's not valued it's more that they have their guys for that.

And there's guys like Carson Steele who are doing the same just better and louder.

The minute BB proved he could play FB is the minute he made this team. He could be a true weapon.

On a side note I notice that Siaki Ika got cut. Give me this guy over Hinish.

All three Texans 7th round picks were cut. One UDFA made the team.

The Texans did the 6th for player + 7th pick swap for Skowronek and cut him.

Noah Brown got 3 million guaranteed to sit in the training room most of camp.

Draft picks do not automatically make the team. And vets traded for draft picks don’t get a guaranteed spot either. And neither does a boat load of guaranteed money grant a vet a roster spot.

This is a deep roster!

I see Case is still technically on the team but he is not likely to play - leastwise until his injury is healed.
So, that leaves Stroud and Mills as the only two other QBs on this roster.
Is two enough?
I guess they could always send out an SOS to Boyle if he is available. Unless they intend to bring him back on the PS.
Any thoughts out there?

Oh well. At least they will be playing against 31 other teams that are thin at certain positions.
Other than DT, this team is set.
Of course an injury at any time can throw a cat among the pigeons, but this is also true of all the other teams.
The only other spot I see that may need close monitoring is the Online.
It would not surprise me if they bring in one of each before all the dust is settled.

The Texans can pay Boyle over the practice squad salary, if they wish. That would be effectively 3 QBs.

Due to injuries and a suspension, this team is razor thin at LB, OT, and DE. They do not have a FB that has played the position in college or the NFL.

Nick still has work to be done.
At DE they've got WA, Hunter, Hughes, Barnett with Gaye on the PS.

At OT they've got Fisher backing up Tunsil and Howard with Broeker in reserve. I would say they're deeper at this position than most. Having 3 starting quality OT's is a luxury most teams don't have.

Agreed about LB, hopefully Too Too has improved but I haven't seen it this preseason.

That's mostly true. But the Texans have a legit shot at winning the Super Bowl. They need to dot the i's and cross the t's to make that happen.
I’m just wondering if there is anyone after these cuts and waiver claims that are difference-making better than players we cut?

More wondering if these difference makers fall to 27th in the waiver queue. Better chance to get vet cuts than via waiver wire, if only because (miraculously) Houston is seen as a place where vets want to go to chase a ring.

I'm concerned with Anderson's ability to take a significant number of snaps out of the gate. I'm not a guy that was calling for the Hughes re-signing.

Everything is fine as long as Tunsil and Howard are standing. Tunsil didn't play a down in preseason or even training camp. Howard played maybe 2 series before hitting the blue tent. But hey, I'm just being paranoid. No big deal. Just the edge protectors.

I guess I trust Ryans being able to get a young player at LB up to speed. One more injury at LB, at the Texans are in a bad place.

The Texans are a very deep team. Except for the positions where they're not deep.

DE room is probably deepest in the league. OT room same. LB thin on paper sure but DeMeco hasn’t had LB units since he’s been coaching.

FB is a part time position and BB has looked the part in part time action. Every team is going to have warts in the salary cap era.

I repeat: This is a deep roster!

The sky is not falling.

ESPN ranks NFL coaching staffs, Texans come in at #6.

6. Houston Texans
Head coach: DeMeco Ryans
Offensive coordinator: Bobby Slowik
Defensive coordinator: Matt Burke

When Chip Kelly was still a coach in the league, he was asked which of his ex-players would be a future head coach, and he said Ryans. Then, a few years later, he said, "It wouldn't surprise me if DeMeco became president." I think about that line a lot, because it wouldn't surprise me if Ryans was the best head coach in football in, like, 10 years.

This is probably too high for the Texans to be ranked, but I cannot overstate my belief in Ryans. Kelly isn't the only guy to tag Ryans as a future head coach; Kyle Shanahan predicted it when he made Ryans a defensive coordinator in 2021 despite Ryans' measly four years of coaching experience. Ryans' teammates at Alabama just straight called him "Coach." This guy has had it since Day 1, and everyone who meets him feels it and believes it. Just watch the effort with which a Ryans-coached defense plays, and you'll get it, too.

His Year 1 impact on the team was immediate. Young players everywhere got better: Nico Collins, Derek Stingley Jr., Jonathan Greenard, Blake Cashman. Rookies found early success: C.J. Stroud, Tank Dell, Christian Harris, Will Anderson Jr. First-year offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik found success as well, deploying a traditional Shanahan-inspired passing attack that succeeded despite a lackluster running game and a devastating injury carousel along the offensive line.

Slowik's Year 2 improvements are important. He's a good offensive coordinator, but teams will be preparing for Stroud a little differently this season, and the running game must be more reliable to keep Stroud's downfield, play-action dominance where it was last season. But even in 2023, the Texans started to ramp up the early-down-pass heaviness as Stroud proved he could handle it. I'm confident this is a smart staff deserving of a lofty ranking.

I would take Zappe over Boyle but doubt he makes it this far. He will be claimed. But let’s face it, if we are down to #3 getting significant time…this ship has sunk. I’m fine with Boyle in that 3rd role.

I’d say we are deep at WR, RB, Safety. Maybe TE as far as 3 deep. And when fully healthy…DE.

I’m most worried at LB and DT. Corner after the starters is poor to mediocre. OT could use a legit 4th guy. Broeker can play in a pinch but he screams guard to me. I’d like a longer armed guy with better feet. Oh well. People in hell want ice water! We are way down the waiver list, so not sure who we can pick up, but depth at any of these spots would be nice!

That said, every single team has trouble spots. Who does the best job covering up for weaknesses will be in the best position to take the Lombardi.

I think Gaye has been scooped up on waivers by the Titans. Wouldn't surprise me if Gaye ends up back here at some point but I'm pretty sure a waiver claim
means they have to keep him on the active for 4 weeks minimum.

Zappe has been signed to the Chiefs practice squad to my knowledge.

how did zappe make it all the way to the chiefs claim on the waiver wire??? how did we not put in for that one??? ugh.

He wasn't claimed by anyone at all. They simply signed him to the practice squad.

If someone had that strong of a conviction for Zappe any team could sign him to the main roster right now. I just don't think anyone is that high on Zappe.
oh ok, thought it was off the wire

Fisher will step in and do a good job at OT.

Case is on season ending IR. Healed or not, he’s not playing in 2024.

Isn’t there a rule where the 3rd QB can’t go back and forth to and from the practice squad? Or did I make that up?

Not that it matters much other than Boyle did at least know the playbook, but whoever comes in at QB3 will need to be somebody familiar with the system. Not that we’re going very far if QB3 is playing. Hell, I don’t think we’re going very far if QB2 is playing.

Owners passed a rule that the 3rd QB could be on the PS and promoted as many times as needed. The NFLPA nixed it. The emergency (3rd) QB has to be part of the 53-man roster.

You could still elevate a PS QB if you really wanted, but they'd still have to be part of the gameday 48

As for a QB3, I’d be interested in Nate Sudfield (DET) b/c he has some experience in the 49’ers system. I’d also take a look at CJ Beathard (JAX) b/c he to had some time in the 49’ers system. The Jaguars gave an injury buyout but it seems he was getting his work in while dealing with a groin issue. Both veteran QB’s are free agents and either could be a cheap insurance signing.

Beathard, that's 76's guy.

Whatever happened to 76.

Developing a young QB during the season is incredibly difficult.

During the season the week is dedicated to gameplanning for the opposition. Not for learning the system or for personal development - that's more a training camp thing. I'm also not sure what their snap share is and how they use their scout team but more often than not the 3rd QB barely gets many practice snaps.

It's why I think when Mills leaves next year I think they'll likely opt for a vet backup who has experience in the system rather than going with a developmental rookie.

Developing a young QB is not the same as teaching him the system. If he's a rookie he can learn a lot. Playing under center, timing, routes, reading defenses, etc.. he'll also be in the QB room as they go over film & dissect the decisions they made & should have made.

Trouble is Sweech, if you bring in a better backup, your gonna pay. It's still a bit of a gamble plus he is gonna have to learn our system and verbiage.
If you can get one.
