Texans random thought of the day

I'm unaware of anyone thinking we were going to be a "primetime" team this season. The projections of a ten-win year is loosely based on a relatively weak schedule. By your own account the Texans were "competitive" against the Pats. Our last preseason game is against the Saints, another bottom half team and one we should be "competitive" with. If we are to win ten games, it is the Saints and the Pats which are the must wins, not teams like the Fins. I'd say the Texans have performed to expectation, so far.
Yes my premise is that some, a very few Texans fans which certainly does not include myself, think that we have a shot at competing with the Jags for the division title, and if these desperately optimistic individuals expectations were indeed satisfied then we'd be a primetime team.

All I keep thinking of on the Texans '23 Draft strategy is the proverbial remark about wanting one's cake while also consuming it immediately, you know no self constraint, no discipline: we've got a ways to go to complete this roster rebuild.
Yea I would have liked to have drafted CJ's teammate Buckeye teammate' 'cause we are hurting for a #1 WR.

But I doubt that the Eagles played all of their starters for an entire half against the 'Phins in last year PS ? But I think that half last night meant something between the teams because they scrimmaged each other twice during the week so they both had some "skin in the game".
We didn't play our starters this whole half either, at least on defense. Defense starters played 2 series with some of them playing about half of the third series from what I saw. But that's neither here nor there my point is that preseason just doesn't have any correlation with regular season success.

Last year we went 3-0 in the preseason and gave up about 60 rushing yards per game. We then went on to have the second worst record in the league with a historically bad rushing defense for the first 3/4th's of the season.

I definitely came out of the game with some questions I just think it's a little silly to come out of preseason games and draw any sort of conclusions.

Agreed

But I think the Saints are better than you think.

Well then I'm not as discouraged about the defenses performance vs the Phins if it wasn't our starters out there during most of the half so thanks for pointing that out to me.
And I'm going to turn over a new leaf in the future and try to be more serious and refrain from being so silly about preseason games, and I do seriously, actually even profoundly believe that generally speaking PS W-L records are meaningless.

I believe the defense drives had personnel setup like this

1st drive- Both first strings in ends in INT

2nd Drive- Both first strings in Dolphins TD

3rd Drive- Texans 1st string dolphins 2nd string ends in 3 and out

4th drive- Texans mixed first and second string at the beginning mostly second string by the end of the drive.

Definitely brought up some questions so not saying it means nothing however

Well Khelar looks like you were paying pretty close attention the other night and I'm wondering were you also watching the
Texans offense that closely, especially our OLine and in particular the play of our LG Kenyon Green ?

Unfortunately I was laid off last week, I have significant savings so I’m taking a month to rest before returning to the job search. But in the meantime I have wayyy too much time on my hands so I've gone back and watched the all 22 like 6 times lol

The first team Oline was nearly flawless in pass protection. Didn’t see anyone get beat one on one. The only pressure came from blitzes when protection slid the wrong way. Run game was iffy but needs to be better if we are going to have a successful offense this year. Frankly I’m not confident the oline will be able to repeat that performance consistently.

Kenyon Green basically same story, held up very well against the pass rush but inconsistent in the run game.

Now this is surprising and positive. The knock on Green is that he is solid in his run blocking but not so in his pass blocking. Now the Fins are a pretty good team, so if Green is showing improvement in his pass blocking against them, this is all for the good.

Appreciate your response to my football questions but mainly I wanted to express my sympathy to the news of your new employment status.
Ben there and done that more than once, and it's for sure a real bummer and I sincerely hope you find a new opportunity soon that suits you. Good luck !

Thank you! Not too worried about it, am fortunate to have been able to save a lot, a good severance, and a fiancée who is a nurse but it’s still not fun. On the bright side I hated the job and only stayed because I was overpaid so hopefully I’ll enjoy the next chapter more!

When I look back at the Dolphins 2nd series play for play, the Texans D with their starters in was not stopping either the run or the pass to any real effectiveness.

Yes the second drive is really the only thing saturday that gave me any significant concerns, first team D got worked.

The optimist in me found a few excuses but with the regular season coming closer and closer each day we’ll just have to wait and see

Not to take anything away from 1:2 Stroud, but looking at the total number of QBs (12) in the competition, and where they were drafted 2 [besides Stroud] in the 1st round, 1 in the 2nd round, 1 in the 3rd round, the rest in later rounds; and with Levis and Hendon not even playing.........I'm not really sure why any Texans media would focus any attention to this particular ranking.....It certainly is far from impressive.

Clint Stoerner on 610 repeatedly and insistently voiced that he doesn't for a minute believe that Tank is injured. He needs to zip it up. But I would not expect different from a former Cowboys QB who evidently never learned English grammar in HS.
Why does he believe Dell was out

Well... he does say 'scuse me when he belches Coors beer..
So that's something 🤔

Why does he believe Dell was out
He gave no solid reason other than it gives 1st team WRs the time...........which makes no sense for a whole game, when the starters played less than a half. But with a tight hamstring and back that has experienced spasms............let's throw him out there without adequate rest and rehab, and see what happens. :toropalm:

Are you keeping count of ACLs and hamstring injuries this season?

It needs more cowbell.
Look, I get why there's a sizeable contingent of Texans fans in the "I'll believe it when I see it" mode. Who can blame them? The highs have not been very high, and the lows have been very, very low. They need to see it first.

For me, it would be hypocritical to not be positive. I wanted Jack and Lovie fired, a new exciting head coach, and a new QB and defensive leader. And a pony. And I got them. It's like sending a Xmas list to Mr. and Mrs. Claus and getting everything but the pony. Unless Tank Dell is the pony? If I can't get excited this season, maybe I should just go back to freebasing. Wait, I meant base jumping.

Listen to old buddy in the orange. Spot on
So it's OK for old buddy in orange to say Stroud will struggle, but not ok for one of us to say he struggled in the 1st preseason game?

This time next year will it be OK for me to say, "yep, old buddy in orange was right." If Stroud does indeed struggle?

It’s a big difference and you know this. Y’all are overreacting and trying to say that small sample size validates what was said about him.

This is my attitude. It's an nice change to actually be hopeful for the Texans future instead of embarrassed that they are in this city.

If that hope is worth it only time will tell, but I'm not going to continue to pay attention to something that generates a negative energy in me. So I'm just choosing to be positive and enjoy the ride, wherever it takes us.

Thanks for the info Cloak. On top of it as always! Good job!

I am excited too.

I am just indifferent when Stroud starts. If he sits for a while won’t take away any excitement for me.

If the 49ers cut Trey Lance I would be cut Mills and sign Lance.

I have no allegiance to Mills. Just want Stroud to get the best opportunity. Rookie QB, Rookie OC and Rookie HC leaves opportunity for development errors.
