Texans random thought of the day

Saw that later. You must have posted that while I was writing. BTW the Texans full PS was filled by players they had in camp. In his presser today NC was discussing his roster philosophy and said he values PS players as much as the 53 because all 65 or so are fungible and will be activated for game day variously according to matchups they individually provide according to the opponent. obviously a benefit to filling your PS with camp players is because they are known commodities and two PS players can be activated each game.
Some of the 2021 practice squad rules.

1. Expansion of practice squads to 16 players, including up to six who have more than two accrued seasons.
2. The ability to protect up to four practice squad players per week from being signed by other teams.
3. Elevation of up to two practice squad players to the active roster, without removing any current players, before 4 p.m. ET the day before a game.
4. Elevation of an additional practice squad player within 90 minutes before kickoff in the event of a late COVID-19 positive test result.

Does the highlighted mean we can carry 55 players on the roster for the game or am I misreading it?

------------------------------------------

IR for 2021.

1. Players placed on injured reserve can return after three weeks, rather than six as in normal seasons.
2. Removal of the limit for how many players can be activated from injured reserve.

TBH for some reason I didn’t even think we carried 53 For the game? Seems there is always several players not active on game day even if not injured.

You are correct. On game day you have 46 active & 7 inactive players. If I'm reading it right now you would have 46 active & 9 inactive.

What happens on Monday to the 2 players you brought up from the practice squad? Do they just go back on the practice squad like nothing happened? In the past didn't they have to be active for 2 games.

The way I read this (I could be wrong) you could just activate 2 people every game. So instead of being limited to the 5 receivers on the roster you can also count the receivers on your practice squad almost the same way as if they are on your roster.

I think so??? Both NC and DC express the setup as (my word)..fungible. But in DC’s presser (and c’mon folks, I’m loving the transparency this team is showing) he seemed to indicate you can only bring up players from the PS just so many times. NC indicated theyplan to use the 52and 16 looking for those players that best match up with that week’s opponent. BTW Texans canceled the afternoon practice for a BBQ/bonding afternoon. Would LOVE to know who catered it and, lol, what flavor tofu NC opted for. Any bets on the caterer?

Two things I have noticed. 1. People hate the “ I want to be the best teammate” comment. 2. People like Burkhead and Burkheads game. Today Burkhead made the comment that the trait he most likes getting complimented on is that he is a good teammate. Lolololol. Conundrum...no?

Would’ve been nice if it could’ve been me. Lol

You know Baller. I thought of you whenI posted that
And you know, we out here in the Hill Countrythink we individually are the best at smoking the classic Texas Trio, Brisket, Ribs and Sausage. But we got sun burned one foot noses. I took one of my best takes from Franklin BBQ in Austin. Wrap the brisket in butcher paper. Forget aluminum foil. HEB sells it. It breathes and that brisket pulls off, forget the knife.

Cal's signed off on a BBQ instead of practice, that's a tacit tank season green light to me. Plus a potential Deshaun Watson trade, I'm turning into a telescope thinking about how the Texans could possibly screw up having that many first round draft picks.
So all this came out of one afternoon BBQ? Hate to ruin your theory but teams regularly give breaks in the middle of grinding practice periods.

If this is routine for so many teams, it should not be hard for you to find news articles to verify it, especially just days before the start of a season.

I looked and couldn't find any, btw. I'm not arguing, but rather curious if it is as routine as Texans fan believes.

It’s a first time two week period before the first game. One afternoon practice forgone for players to bond after the cuts is a green light tacit tank indicator and a trade indicator for DW? Wow. I remember the last regime would give surprise days off even cancelling practices if a certain FG was made As an incentive. I would rather see an explanation how three hours over two weeks is a problem? From interviews a lot of these players are actually putting in significant overtime hours.

Bum would invite the families and pets to Friday practices. He was the real deal.

The Killens in Pearland is right down the street from my dad's house. On Saturday (pre-covid) there would be a line around the building with signs up saying "Serving while meat lasts".
Not been to Killens so I dunno how good their steaks are ? How do you rate them ?

I've never had one of their steaks.

For what it is worth my brother went to their steakhouse in the Woodlands & had a dry aged Wagyu rib-eye that cost $160. It was a business lunch so he did not pay for it. When I asked was it worth the money he said no.

Does the POS show up?

Jalen Camp WR signed to practice squad. Was incredibly athletic size/speed/strength prospect. Played in Georgia Tech run heavy offense. I wonder if he could be developed into a TE someday?

Camps has great athletic ability,

Would rather take a chance on a guy like this than Vyncient Smith/Erickson/Coutee.

Just curious does anyone know if the Texans are not allowed to eat on the days they practice? In other words practice then eat? I personally do not care whether they had the barbecue or practice.

Texans counting on Desmond King as veteran nickel
By Aaron WilsonSep 4, 2021

The way that Texans cornerback Desmond King sees the game is simplistic: Find the football, and take it away from the offense.

The veteran nickel and former All-Pro defensive back and returner uses his instincts to carry out what defensive coordinator Lovie Smith wants: create lots of turnovers.

“Absolutely, coach Lovie, he's a turnover mindset guy, takeaway mindset guy,” King said. “His defense is built on having eyes on the quarterback, having those zone instincts. So, what we want to do is be able to play fast out there on the field and get the ball.

“Just the takeaways. He wants his players to go out there and be comfortable playing. That's what we're doing. He wants us to play fast, play smart, and play physical. That's how we're going to play.”
King has built a reputation for his opportunistic style.

King anticipates throws adeptly, jumping into passing lanes for interceptions.
In 2018 with the Los Angeles Chargers, King had a career-high three interceptions.
King is also an explosive returner who had a 43-yard punt return and a 29-yard kickoff return during the preseason in relief of Pro Bowl return specialist Andre Roberts.

Texans' line flexibility increases with Marcus Cannon, Lane Taylor
Sep 3, 2021

Texans offensive line coach James Campen has more options now that Marcus Cannon and Lane Taylor are healthier and able to practice.

The Texans can use Cannon's veteran presence at right tackle behind new starter Charlie Heck, perhaps as soon as the season-opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, after activating him this week from the active-physically unable to perform list.

Cannon started practicing and has made significant progress from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery and a strained calf, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

Taylor, cut by the Texans with a failed physical designation and then signed to the practice squad, is also slated to start practicing. Taylor could eventually help the Texans at right offensive guard, his primary position playing for Campen with the Green Bay Packers. For now, Max Scharping is the starter.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Depends on how well Heck plays.

If Heck plays well I could see Cannon moving in to RG.
A lot depends on the progress Lane Taylor makes returning to practice. This may be as soon as this coming week. He currently is signed to the PS, but could move up as soon as he is ready.

Haven't really heard anything positive about Scharping, but also nothing negative. For now, he seems to have solidified his starting position as the RG, so I take this to mean he hasn't played himself out of the job.

We need Heck and Scharping to take that next step.

Culley said he was pleased with Scharping's progress.

Said he's gotten a lot stronger.

Anthony Miller was at practice for the first time since he dislocated his shoulder in the Green Bay game. With his history, he will likely try to make it through this season with a harness, but chances are high that he re dislocates his shoulder once again. Surgery is again in his future.
