Texans Player Transaction DISCUSSION Thread

The Texans have been awarded OT Zachary Thomas off waivers from the Patriots.
Thomas, 26, had been claimed from the Los Angeles Rams following the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound San Diego State product went on to appear in eight games this fall, working between left tackle and left guard while totaling 84 snaps on offense and 24 snaps on special teams.

Originally selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft at No. 186 overall, Thomas began his rookie year on the practice squad before heading to the NFC West for a spot on the active roster. From there, he saw action in three games over the previous two campaigns.

A corresponding move loomed after head coach Jerod Mayo’s side reportedly signed guard Tyrese Robinson, a 2022 undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma, off the practice squad of the Minnesota Vikings.

Overview

Tackle-to-guard prospect with run-blocking talent to work with, Thomas is a fit for zone-scheme teams as a sticky move blocker with the ability to shift and stay connected while continuing to keep his feet moving. He lacks the desired mass and power to generate much downhill push, but improved hand placement could help. His play strength, in general, needs an upgrade, as does his protection posture, to prevent defenders from exploiting certain flaws. Thomas has late-round potential and could find a place on an NFL roster as a guard with emergency tackle flexibility.

DT Tommy Togiai elevated from PS

WR Nico Collins and DE Jerry Hughes activated off IR.

CB D’angelo Ross cut to make room for Collins.

Since Togiai was bumped up and Foley is out I suspect they want Autry mainly at DE covering Will Anderson’s spot opposite Hunter.

With no Khalil Davis and one more week without Mario Edwards I suspect its going to be the Settle/Hinish show at DT tomorrow.

Yeah not optimal but Schultz got banged up a bit last game and Stover is out again. So I believe that leaves Irv Smith and Beck as backups/TE2.
Beck's blocking is on a par with Schultz's... hopefully Bobby doesn't fall back into the trap of having him out there as much as he did last year

Diontae Johnson? This may be deleted as it’s merely speculation. Just makes sense that a team in need would claim him. He’s polarizing to say the least. Talented basket case.
I dont think he falls to the Texans on the WW, but if he does he should become a Texan, I was hoping Caserio would trade for him, because I was afraid Dell would get hurt again, after Diggs went down.

In case anyone is wondering, the Texans are 22nd in priority on the waiver wire. So even if they file a claim, if any of the 21 teams ahead file a claim they are out. And both the Chargers and Bucs need help and have a higher waiver priority. It’s a longshot, but if I am NIck I file the claim and hope.

J Alexander in the Chronic also posited Richie James as a possible. OBJ is an obvious short term rental option as well.

Any of these 3 can work out of the slot. Johnson is the most talented at this point of the 3 but the least likely to be here.

Did they put J Wayne back on the practice squad after taking out tank Dale with a knee injury? Seems unlikely that they would remove him from active roster Saturday to go back to the practice squad ? That would seem like they were punishing him in my opinion.
Practice squad players can be elevated to the active roster 3 times during the season before needing to be signed to the active roster. They revert back to the practice squad after each game.

Wayne was a practice squad elevation against KC. He is a practice squad elevation again today.

I knew that but did not know that a player activated from the practice squad automatically returns to the practice squad after that game.

I am glad that deculus was moved on to the active roster. He was a long time starter on the offensive line and college. Also wide receiver Jahnkey could be helpful.

If we sign him off someone's practice squad we have to activate him, don't we?

He made a mistake that a lot of young guys make. Probably wont happen again. He was in great position and played well on ST's so there were positives for the young man.
Curious as to what he could have done better? I wondered if he should have advanced into the ball but was not sure if that would have been an interception. I thought at the time at least he could have knocked it down if he had stepped up.

Try to high point the ball instead of waiting on it. If he gets the int great if not the pass is broken up.

What in the hell is going on? We're already thin at WR. Stover goes on IR & still we cut Dionte Johnson... dude must have some serious issues.
I’ve seen some people saying that there were local media rumblings that he was upset after the Chargers game about lack of targets.

Can anyone provide anything more firm than this?

I saw a reel but can’t remember where showing him looking very open repeatedly against the Chargers, I mean 8-10 routes looking very open without CJ looking his way.

Then I see rumours he doesn’t like to practice while CJ is a QB who builds that trust and understanding by cramming reps.

How big of a nightmare is DJ when he’s ‘upset’? Building a picture that he might be a real locker room cancer and he’s been through 4 teams in a contract year where he could have shut up and bagged a fortune.

KPRC in Houston reported his tantrum.

It clearly violated his agreement with Ryans and Caserio that he wouldn't pull the same crap he did with previous teams.

I've seen the video of him getting open against the Chargers. It doesn't matter. Having his history, he can't walk into an organization and expect to instantly become the #1 or #2. He's gotta work his way up to that. He has to earn it. That's the part he doesn't get.

This is good for the league. It sends the right message to players.

& it's not like we weren't moving the chains & scoring. If someone else gets the ball & score, what's to complain about? That's the goal everytime they step on the field.

Now if they're going somewhere else with the ball & they're not catching it & we're not scoring I can understand a competitor getting upset, but that's not the case here.

Yep, and we've seen this happen in the NFL. I suspect maybe it's happening right now with Marvin Harrison Jr.

But if you've been on a team for a minute and already throwing a "What about ME?!" hissy fit after a big win, then you need to take a break from team sports and talk to a hypnotherapist about your childhood.

Well, I will go back to my original thoughts on this. Nothing ventured-nothing gained. In the worst case, he's cut, and that's that. Which is exactly what happened.

I did not expect him to be cut until we were booted from the playoffs though. That part surprises me.

So, now we're down to Nico and nobody. It's basically a one-man show on Kirby at WR. Metche is terrible with poor hands. Hutch doesn't get open. Woods can still make some hay underneath and is durable with good hands, but he doesn't scare anyone.

86 can sometimes find a spot underneath but he's inconsistent in all facets. Stover is also now gone.

It's really Nico and Mixon. They need to increase Mixon's role in the pass game, and also make usage of CJ's new found wheels.

If the Texans win on Saturday, it's got to be (again) on the backs of the defense.

If they lose, I'm sure it will be Slowik's fault.

Johnson was claimed off waivers by the Ravens on Wednesday, per the transactions wire (h/t ESPN’s Adam Schefter). To be clear, this is merely a procedural move; he will not suit up for Baltimore over the remainder of the postseason. Like all waived players at this time of year, Johnson will not formally be awarded to the team until after the Super Bowl.

By virtue of being a Raven once the league year ends, Johnson departing on the open market could put Baltimore in line for a 2026 compensatory pick. More immediately, this move prevents the 28-year-old from becoming a free agent amongst the eight remaining playoff team. Had Johnson cleared waivers, an interested suitor could have brought him in as depth option on offense.

It should have been obvious that Johnson was a chronic malcontent................something that you don't want to insert as an "experiment".............especially during the playoffs.

Unless you have a situation where you saw the obvious lack of offensive skill players. Can’t be complaining about Hutch, Metchie, & Schultz then act like you don’t know why the Texans are letting their desperation show.

Desperation should not lead to entirely predicable poor outcome.
