2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
Steelb….you need to let all these crazy arse thoughts regarding Watson go, since it clouds just about all your post(s).
I was good with the drafting of Watson but not what RS paid to move up to get him. I still say the only man in that War Room that was happy with the Watson pick was RS….not b/c of Watson but b/c of the cost.
Talent wise…Watson was easily the most gifted QB the Texans had ever had wearing their uniform. You didn’t know jack shite about Watson “the man” when he was drafted. You just didn’t like Watson the player b/c you viewed him as a selfish player.
Anybody with a set of neutral eyes could see what you perceived as selfish play as a QB who spent his entire career with the Texans running for his life and extending plays.
For this level of stupidity, I put it at the feet of RS, OB primarily, and then Cal for keeping a bad GM too long, hiring an idiot as a GM, keeping an idiot HC too long, holding onto an imbecile OL Coach, and keeping 2 idiots as OC’s way past their “fired dates”. With these facts, you have only chose to glaze over them so you could hold RS and Watson accountable exclusively. That’s what’s mind-numbing.
As mentioned, the only reason I wanted to move on from Watson instead of re-signing him was b/c the Texans failed to properly build a team around him before his rookie contract expired. I also mentioned that getting rid of OB and his staff would be every bit as important as trading Watson to create a chance of drafting Herbert so the organization could reboot with a new rookie “Franchise QB” and keep the cap in good working order.
What “none” of us (including you steelb) could’ve predicted was Watson’s current legal situation and his demands to be traded. I’m still waiting for the judicial system to determine Watson’s fate but the thing that irked me, was his trade demand after signing a new and high earnings contract. I’ve come to terms as to why this probably happened but it’s his responsibility to honor the contract. For this, I want him gone…not in a noose and swinging from the nearest tree…but for the biggest return in draft picks the Texans can get under the circumstances.
