2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
Steelb….you need to let all these crazy arse thoughts regarding Watson go, since it clouds just about all your post(s).

I was good with the drafting of Watson but not what RS paid to move up to get him. I still say the only man in that War Room that was happy with the Watson pick was RS….not b/c of Watson but b/c of the cost.

Talent wise…Watson was easily the most gifted QB the Texans had ever had wearing their uniform. You didn’t know jack shite about Watson “the man” when he was drafted. You just didn’t like Watson the player b/c you viewed him as a selfish player.

Anybody with a set of neutral eyes could see what you perceived as selfish play as a QB who spent his entire career with the Texans running for his life and extending plays.

For this level of stupidity, I put it at the feet of RS, OB primarily, and then Cal for keeping a bad GM too long, hiring an idiot as a GM, keeping an idiot HC too long, holding onto an imbecile OL Coach, and keeping 2 idiots as OC’s way past their “fired dates”. With these facts, you have only chose to glaze over them so you could hold RS and Watson accountable exclusively. That’s what’s mind-numbing.

As mentioned, the only reason I wanted to move on from Watson instead of re-signing him was b/c the Texans failed to properly build a team around him before his rookie contract expired. I also mentioned that getting rid of OB and his staff would be every bit as important as trading Watson to create a chance of drafting Herbert so the organization could reboot with a new rookie “Franchise QB” and keep the cap in good working order.

What “none” of us (including you steelb) could’ve predicted was Watson’s current legal situation and his demands to be traded. I’m still waiting for the judicial system to determine Watson’s fate but the thing that irked me, was his trade demand after signing a new and high earnings contract. I’ve come to terms as to why this probably happened but it’s his responsibility to honor the contract. For this, I want him gone…not in a noose and swinging from the nearest tree…but for the biggest return in draft picks the Texans can get under the circumstances.

Easterby wasn't hired in New England until after Hernandez was arrested. If you're going to spate your hate, at least get your facts straight
You are right! I just meant as a whole where people were in the structure of New England. We do not have a Brady or Belichick. Wasn't just trying to be an Easterbby hater but perception is reality and I think for all the reasons you have to bang on him you also can't just absolve him from everything as well.

Long post, but fact is he never should have been drafted in the 1st place and I said as much at the time. The man that drafted him put this franchise in the place it's in today. Those are facts.

It didn't surprise me at all that Derrick pulled the trade crap, selfish people do what selfish people do.

If convicted I don't care about what Caserio gets in a trade for him. I want him to do atleast 5 years in prison. Maybe then this selfish prick will have time to sit and reflect on what kind of person he is and improve himself. Maybe then he might be able to become humble. One thing is for sure he's dumb as a box of rocks. I look at Derrick like a lotto winner that blows all of their money due to their upbringing. You can bet if there's a bad decision to be made they will make the wrong one every time. And to think Cal gave this guy almost 160 mil. Cal is no smarter than Derrick.

31 other owners would have done the exact same thing in Cal's place. Only thing I disagree with about the contract, not using hindsight, is the no trade clause. You should never give that to a player.

Conspiracy theory - Since OB was writing contracts do you think he gave that to Watson to keep him happy and ensure Watson’s support for keeping OB as coach?
No that was the market rate for an elite QB at the time. Everyone knew that the only person that was going to make more than Watson was Mahomes. When its a contract as large as that one the owner is very involved in it and has the final say.

I agree many would not have given him the NTC but at the same time it could have been that was the only way he would sign and if they had let him walk over that then they would have been crucified.
You make him play out his 5th yr option. Then either trade him (What I would've done) or buy him off of the NTC. Like give him an extra 10 mil to not put the NTC in his contract.

Running a business isn't easy, sometimes you have to make hard decisions that are unpopular because it's the right thing to do for your business.

Wilbon is so wrong on this it's actually hard to believe.

However, one of the replies to that video, I think, is spot on...

"There’s got to be some unspoken elements within that organization that makes players question the leadership above the coaching staff. Star players walking when their contracts are up, or just out right refusing to play in general says a lot."

Culley's a good man. He's great with the players, from all that I've read and heard. He wasn't a good HC. That said, he never lost the locker room, or if he did it never showed up on the field. The Texans played hard until the very end.
IMO Culley did a pretty good job for a rookie HC. He made lemonade as best as could be made with a roster full of lemons. The biggest failure during the season was a Tim Kelly led offense that, when coupled to a roster with limited overall talent, was never going to consistently compete against average or better defenses. Not losing the locker room even after having to discipline some of his veteran players is a testament to Culley's abilities. I think he would've done fine as a HC if he'd been open to replacing Tim Kelly, the glaring weakness on the coaching staff.

The Rick Smith and @steelbtexan version of Kevin Bacon's six degrees of separation. If Bob McNair fired RS when he fired Kubiak he would not have brought Derrick to Kirby or if Kubiak never hired RS, he would not bring Derrick to Kirby or if Bob McNair never hired Kubiak and Kubiak never hired RS, Derrick would not be on Kirby.
Or, if Bob McNair had never sold Cogen Technologies to Enron in 1999 Watson might never had been in Houston...ever. That would have solved ALL our problems.

I don't know if that was the reason, or the only reason. I don't think Rick Smith could have ever done anything right in the eyes of some Texans fans. And I largely agreed. I was not a fan of Rick Smith. And I also wasn't a fan of the cost of acquiring Watson. That said, for a brief period of time (which ended during the 2021 offseason) I was pretty happy about the pick.

12 yrs of failure suggests he was never going to bring a championship to Kirby.

At 35 mil I still wasn't a fan of the pick. Why because every QB that's taken up that much cap space has never won a championship and I certainly didn't think Derrick would be the guy to break this trend. In other words there would be no championships throughout the life of Derrick's contract. Which is kinda bad to think as a fan that your team has no chance of winning a championship for the next 7 or so yrs.

Drew Brees, QB (Saints)
▪ Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, OL (Chiefs)
▪ Jimmy Garoppolo, QB (49ers)
▪ Jimmy Graham, TE (Bears)
▪ DeAndre Hopkins, WR (Cardinals)
▪ Patrick Mahomes, QB (Chiefs)
▪ Deshaun Watson, QB (Texans)
▪ J.J. Watt, DL (Cardinals)
▪ Russell Wilson, QB (Seahawks
The Texans did not know Watson was going to pull the crap that he pulled. But to say other teams wouldn’t have given him the no trade clause in his contract is per speculation on you part.
The Texans brass messed up a lot of things. But they did have a glimmer of hope there for a minute. They were winning their division. They had darn good players on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately injuries and power struggles struck them and hit them extremely hard. The passing of the late Mr. McNair was the biggest hit of them all.
Some of us are just being to emotional in our hot takes for specific people. Nobody but the people that were very close to Watson, knew of his wrong doings. Those jokers are enablers because they didn’t speak out and guess what, they will never will publicly speak out. And that’s for various reasons. We all know why.
Now we all know the professional sports arena is so darn forgiving. Even if Watson goes to jail, he will more and likely get a second chance with another fat contract. The media will hype him up as the comeback kid. Fans will go out and purchase his jersey. All will be forgiven.

I dont care

All I care about is that justice is served, be it guilty or not guilty and that Derrick never plays another down for the Texans.

Keep it Movin!
Yall wasting your time once Watson was interjected in the conversation with Steelbtexan. If Cal was an actual owner and running things , Esterby would've been fired with BOB and even under investigation, Watson would still be the qb until further notice. As I stated before, especially with having 3 daughters, sisters, and nieces, if he's guilty, I hope the victims get their justice.

It's a culture of dysfunction. I used to think I was a football fan but over time I came to realize I was really just like the people watching Jerry Springer. I just have a particular fascination with this one guest named McNair and his extended family.....
I watch, simply because they're an NFL team, and they're from Houston. Well, mostly an NFL team.

Actually, the Texans being a real NFL team is kinda debatable.

Hervoyel

BUENO!
Altogether last year I watched maybe a half of football. I can't sit through it anymore and don't enjoy it. The game is broken for me. Not just because of the Texans inept "culture" but because it's like sitting through three hours of commercials while something vaguely interesting is taking place in the small spaces in between. It's not for me but watching the Texans screw things up time and again is like a guilty pleasure at this point. I don't know if I could name more than 3-4 of them right now. I know Mills and Cooks, The RB from the Patriots and Amendola. Don't know or care about any of the rest of them. Just watching the front office spaz out is entertainment enough for me.

If I could disassociate my loyalty from this debacle, it would be hilarious. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to. Maybe that tipping point is coming, though.
It’s like watching Homeland or Game of Thrones. Be ready for anything. Roll with it.

I'm so sick of the religious angle with Easterby and even before him on this franchise. If they want to have a fellowship on the team I support that. Cool. But don't force it and draft or pursue free agents with that as a top priority.

You find the best talents you can and mold young stupid men into better people if you can. Truth be told, the bad actors usually need more help then the good ones. Isn't that the Christian way?

Obviously, I'm not asking us to draft murderers and rapist (did I need to type that?)

At the end of the day, this is still a football team. We need talent to win. We need to win to establish a brand. With a brand, this team makes a bigger difference.

Maybe I'm jaded though, I once had a poster ask me to change my avatar because it offended his religious sensibilities.
Actually if you’re looking at it from the religious angle, shouldn’t they be against judging and wanting to give people second chances Who’ve made mistakes? This whole religious drama theme going about doesn’t make sense.

Change is hard, out with the old and in with the new. The media needs to learn to accept this. Just as they need to accept that their Easterby witch hunt lead by Mr. Rootes/Derrick/Palcic has failed and Jack is going nowhere in the near future.

I'm just going to be glad to see the GM/HC have the same philosophy when it comes to coaching and the types of players that will be needed to be successful. Caserio/Gannon both come from backgrounds that include scouting and coaching. They speak the same language, this should give both of them better odds of being successful. Also depending on how you see Mills, this is far from the worst job in the NFL.

This is the only team that has players consistently complaining about this organization. Both JJ and Whitney were big time leaders for this organization. With Watt being the face. That’s a big time problem. Had nothing to do with getting rid of the old and in with the new. I can’t not recall any other team getting rid of every big time player in a short time like this.

That is not even the point. The point is he had negative things to say about this franchise he once loved.

I’ve stated on here on several occasions Watt bounced on his own accord.

Dude you have a top notch franchise quarterback who refuses to play for this team.

They traded away one of the best receivers in the game for a broken down washed up running back. What do you mean.

Shoots they traded away Glover Quin for a broken down washed up Ed Reed.

Reader is in the Super Bowl game. Pretty darn good player we refuse to pay. .

Charles Omenihu was a young player with potential.

This list goes on.

I hear you. But I doubt it’s over.

The main reason for those guys being disgruntled is gone. David Culley didn’t fix it. & it’s possible that the players are just as upset about Easterby being here as the fans are.

It’s going to take a while to flush it all out. A bunch of players on one year deals & another HC in two years should help quicken the process

Most definitely.

We’re talking about the culture here over the past , let’s say 5 years or so. It has not been good. Especially the year O’Brien was fired. Thunder is was said O’Brien wasn’t approachable. And then when a player was able to talk to him, he would curse them out and kick them out of his office.

Players I believe were ticked off with Easterby because he was a spy. Then some thinks he stabbed O’Brien in the back. ( Karma for ole O’Brien). Not going to go into that because of a certain member.

Then looking back the culture wasn’t good when Rick and O’Brien were tripping with one another.
