I always thought the Broncos decision to nab Kubiak had more to do with Osweiler than with Peyton.
Not that I've got any opinion about Osweiler one way or the other. It's just that Kubiak & Peyton never really made much sense.
Now, maybe this is McNair's way of atoning for trumping OB on the Hard Knocks thing.... but we're so stacked at QB I can't see this actually happening.

My guess is that JJo would have been a cap casualty and AJ would have been designated June 1 cut. I buy this story mainly because Kubiak and Manning teaming up didn't make sense to me.

So now are we throwing out the rumor that Manning wanted to come to the Texans before going to the Broncos? Because if you don't throw out that story, this makes absolutely zero freaking sense.
1) preconceived notions aside Manning clearly does not object to Kubiak.
2) OB's system/personality make as little sense for Manning as Kubiak's appeared to.
3) Manning would just retire if he didn't like the trade and why would he?
4) We passed on him for free with 3+ years in the tank and now would trade for him with 1 ?+ year(s) in the tank.
5) If this was more than a drunken joke on the phone the Texans wouldn't have been signing people with roster bonuses.
6) The conversation with AJ would have been - "will you take a pay cut to have Peyton as your QB?"

I looks like PM will be a June cut from the Broncos anyway, so why should the Texans trade to get him? It's doubtful if anybody will sign him at his present salary now that he's older that dirt.
When the Dolts released him would have been the time for the Texans to sign him. Now it's too late. He's over the hill and much too expensive for us.

I thought it was too risky when the shoes released him, and the last thing I would do is help Kubes out by taking the absurd contract that he has now besides the fact he is breaking down more and more every minute. It made more sense three years ago than it does now. I think this is just some wanna be journalist throwing something against the wall to get listens to his podcast.

With considerably more than four years of service, if cut between now and the trade deadline, Manning wouldn't go through waivers. His contract would immediately be terminated, and he would become an unrestricted free agent.
Besides, the idea that the Broncos are going to cut Manning before the season starts is lunacy.
It was risky when the Colts released him because he hadn't thrown a football in over 18 months. The question was if he'll ever be able to throw a football again, much less with the precision & velocity that he's shown capable of doing over the last two seasons... & he recently passed another medical check up.
I'm not arguing one way or the other as far as acquiring Peyton Manning or not, just saying there's a lot less uncertainty, a lot less risk to Peyton Manning now, than there was when the Broncos signed him.

Well, he agreed to take a pay cut to stay on the team. But that was before the guy that would be watching his back (Ryan Clady) blew his ACL and is done the season. If he's having second thoughts, I couldn't really blame him.

To paraphrase Terrell Owens' agent, Peyton has 15 Million reasons (likely 20 Million when you include what I'm guessing is a refundable restructure bonus) to continue playing football.

I don't think you have to throw out the rumor. It makes it stronger in my mind. The team didn't pass on him. I've always believed it was Kubiak's interfering with Smith and McNair that kept Manning from donning a Texans jersey. He had Schaub and that was his guy. It didn't matter that Schaub was coming back from a lisfranc injury which can be career threatening to someone needing to stand and move around. Now Manning finds himself in a situation where he's playing in a offense that isn't designed for him with a coach notorious for being unwilling to allow his QBs to make their own decisions, even if those QBs actually played significant snaps in the NFL rather than washing Elway's jocks. I think Manning would rather be in our offense especially with Andre (I think he takes a pay cut if that trade was made). Manning would be a fine fit for this offense. He can make pre-snap reads better than anyone. He gets the ball out of his hands quickly and doesn't need to be mobile. Just because Manning is playing doesn't mean he doesn't object to Kubiak. He doesn't want to walk away yet and he signed the contract. He could ask to be traded, but that's not his way.
It never would have happened, though. The Broncos would have been asking for too much (1st or 2nd rounder) to have made it worth making the move. It should have been done 3 years ago and Kubiak and Schaub shown the door. Right now this team would have a Lombardi.

None of which makes sense. Manning has twice proven, once beyond any shadow of a doubt by not retiring this year and taking a paycut, that he has ZERO problems with Kubiak. You don't think in the discussions among Elway, Kubiak and Manning prior to Kubiak getting hired that the topic of whether Kubiak squashed any Texans' interest in Manning came up? Yeah right. The Manning Kubiak relationship was the key element to this deal.
People can keep harping on theoretical problems between Manning and Kubiak - Manning has demonstrated y'all are wrong (and back when it was guesswork I was one of them so I was wrong too).
Absolutely nothing about the rumor of this thread makes any sense.

I'm wondering if Manning hasn't come to the conclusion that he has difficulty getting it done in the postseason when everything rests on him. Maybe he has enough intelligence to recognize it and enough humility to swallow his pride and embrace a system that's different. One that puts more emphasis on the run game, allowing that to set him up for success rather than a system that forces him to create his own success. All of this is specific to the playoffs, though. He obviously has the ability to carry a team through the regular season.
All Manning has to do is look at his boss' career. As good as Elway was he didn't win his rings until T.Davis helped carry that offense. And Kubiak comes in fresh off of making Justin WhatsHisName a 1200+ yd rusher and helping Flacco to get the highest TD and yardage totals of his career.
And I felt that Manning not coming here was a pure and simple arithmetic thing. We couldn't get him under the cap without depleting the talent on the team.
Except that Rick Smith hasn't acted on it yet. I can see that sucker now... corn cob pipe in one hand, a glass of Kraken in the other.... laughing, thinking he'll bend Elway over the way he did Belichick when he negotiated the Mallett trade.
Mark my words, a week before the season starts, Manning will be a Texans.

You sit here and talk with complete certainties that the Texans and the Colts would have been just happy go lucky to do business together. What on earth makes you think the Colts would have traded him to us while we're in their division? Teams don't like to do that typically. They might have, but the price tag would have likely been higher, and we didn't have a ton of money to take on his contract. We would have had to make a move or two and letting go of some contracts to make the room at that time in the off season. I'm not saying we couldn't have done it. We likely could have, and maybe if we were persistent enough, we could have gotten Manning.
The other thing in this is you saying we would have had a Lombardi. How is that some guarantee to you, when Manning is 1 for 3 in SB's, and has a losing record in the playoffs? Manning was just in the most perfect situation the last two years, and still couldn't get it done. His body wore down last season. It is very possible that we could have been a top contending team with Manning for sure. Whether we would have won it all is just fun speculation.
I'd rather focus on what the new regime is doing now though. Those are old mistakes that we can't change. I'm a lot more concerned with what we are needing to do right now to find a franchise QB if Mallet/Hoyer isn't a success.

(a) Manning didn't bring a Lombardi to Denver. And the only reason he got one in Indy is because he went up against Rex Grossman.
(b) We finally are at a point where all three of our QBs actually know this offense (more or less). Now you want to bring in someone who doesn't?
(c) And I totally agree that the Colts would not have traded Manning within the division.

Unfortunately, it's hard to tell when it's sarcasm because the reality of many posts looks like sarcasm when it is not intended to be.

Teams find a way to make it work all the time by restructuring contracts and releasing guys. When Peyton Manning had interest in signing with the Texans as a free agent many years ago, back when Kubiak was here and Schaub was coming off the foot injury, we should have pounced on him back then even though Manning was an unknown at the time with his neck surgery and rehab. Big rewards often come with big risks.
The Texans always seem to be a day late and a dollar short. That's just the stigma and bad luck this organization has seemingly had since their expansion draft back in 2002. Especially when it comes to landing an elite quarterback. I never considered Matt Schaub as elite even when he led the league in passing yardage that one year (over 4,700 in 2009 I believe). We likely should have won at least one Super Bowl by now. We have the best player in the game in J.J. Watt but can't advance past the divisional round two straight years and no playoffs the past two seasons. Four seasons with Watt dominating and it seems like the team success isn't where it should be. In large part because of our big question marks at the quarterback position.
