It would seem to me that their complaints, and the police reports, may have been so weak the GJ felt no need to call them for further testimony, except for the one. What was to be gained from their testimony, except emotion, which is not legally relevant?

This seems more likely to be the case, than any other explanation or charge.

Buzbee said Watson deleted some of the messages, expressing confidence that his clients will get a favorable decision.

“He told us that he took it upon himself to delete them. He wouldn’t tell me when he deleted them. It comes down to credibility and I feel quite confident that the plaintiffs in this case are credible, they’re confident, they’re courageous, and I’m proud to represent them.”

Whether or not those were the 9 strongest cases, not all of the evidence was presented to the GJ. Case and point, the women’s testimony. The GJ did not ask all of the women questions, they didn’t even allow them to take the stand. That looks prejudicial as if a decision was already made not to question them. If you point to the videos with HPD, that is not in person testimony. To be thorough, you call them all to the stand.
 
Buzbee is now saying that no interested team contacted him about these cases and says the backlash will come back to haunt them.
Who does he think he is? Does he think he is the only person who can understand all this? Or that none else has lawyers to consult?
Perhaps he just thinks that all other lawyers are morons...

I really like this post. Just feels genuine and relatable. That said, I'm probably on the other side of the fence. While I have said some things and taken a victory lap of my own, I have different reasons. I'm not a fan boy of Dw. I didnt and don't think he's innocent because of his performance on the field.

I have the same expectations for a player as I do a plumber or a poster. Innocent till proven guilty and everyone deserves their day in court. Forgetting that feels excused and overlooked to me. That amazes me. Lot of folks here assigned guilt well before last Friday.

I was willing to wait for evidence. We didn't get it so he's innocent. It doesn't mean he's a great person. I think we can all agree on that.

As far as going to jail, yes.

But you're taking it a little too far when you're saying we can't form an opinion about him until he has his day in court. I know he doesn't act like a guy I want as the starting QB for the team I root for. Seems Cal feels the same way.

Good thing that there are people out there that don't care. That way the Texans aren't at a total loss. But yes, it's that they don't care. Not that they think he's innocent. They don't care about what has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. That he has a habit of asking for one thing & expecting something else.
 
The Texas GJ made it’s decision…..there wasn’t enough evidence for Deshaun Watson to indicted. Pretty much end of story.

I don’t think Buzbee and his clients stand a great chance at getting their desired settlements. If the GJ didn’t see enough evidence to indict Watson….the same could be said in regards to Buzbee trying to present his in Civil Court case as well. Where’s the evidence?

The only one we as fans are really waiting on….what’s the NFL’s stance? Can they really go after Watson based on accusations since a GJ refused to indict based on a lack of evidence? The NFL certainly can’t used that they’re embarrassed as a league…..probably the most embarrassed person in this whole mess is Watson. You know everyone in the locker room is going to give him shite.

I think any team can trade for Watson knowing they have him as starting QB1 for the entirety of his contract.

I get, and respect, where you're coming from, but at the same time, Jeffrey Epstein never had his day in court and I have no doubt that he was guilty as ****.

Humans blindly make judgement calls every single day, most likely a vestige of our ancient survival instincts. Sometimes your gut just tells you something and you listen to it.

But, it is what it is and I'm not losing any sleep over this mess. It's interesting from a sociological standpoint and obviously how it impacts our football team, but beyond that I'm just not that invested in it.

Yeah, I will never understand why a current member of the Calhoun's team got moved to this section to be begin with. Unless my reading comprehension isn't what it used to be. Which is a distinct possibility.

You don't know what the DA asked the women. The DA obviously heard all their stories and didn't think any of the cases were strong. Just because Lawsuits layout what the victims said, doesn't make them believable in a court of law.

I don’t know about that. I’m one who is convinced he is guilty, but I also understand the difficulty trying to prove something of this nature in a criminal court.

I unerstood completely from the start why Buzzbee pursued civil charges & not criminal.

I'm afraid this particular thread still has a lot of life left in it with 22 lawsuits still waiting to be resolved.

Because this thread is specifically about his lawsuits, and the Texans forum is for football-related topics only. The impact of this situation on the Texans is in the Watson trade thread.

Besides, this thread was eventually going to be moved after Watson is sent to another team. This thread would not stay in the Texans football section when he's on another team.
 
Possibility of Commissioner exempt list still looms for Deshaun Watson

Many assume that Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson eventually will be suspended for the civil and criminal allegations that have been made against him. The number — 22 civil complaints and two additional criminal complaints who did not sue Watson — is large enough to be troubling on its face. Whatever the critical mass of complaints that will naturally cause concern, 24 is on the wrong side of it.

The league knows this. Some have concluded that the failure of the league to take action against Watson means that the league won’t, at least not until the 22 civil cases are resolved. That’s possibly a misreading of the situation.

The league hasn’t placed Watson on the Commissioner exempt list (a fancy label for paid leave) because it hasn’t had to. He didn’t try to play for the Texans in 2021. He wasn’t traded to a new team that would have tried to put him on the field. Now with the Browns, he won’t play until August at the earliest.

The league has made the Personal Conduct Policy more than broad enough to permit paid leave, even in the absence of criminal charges. “When an investigation leads the Commissioner to believe that a player may have violated this Policy by committing any of the conduct identified above,” the Policy explains, “he may act where the circumstances and evidence warrant doing so. This decision will not reflect a finding of guilt or innocence and will not be guided by the same legal standards and considerations that would apply in a criminal trial.”

The key words are “may have violated.” With 24 people accusing Watson of sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions and Watson’s lawyer admitting that some massage therapy sessions did indeed become voluntary sexual encounters, there’s enough for the Commissioner to conclude that Watson “may have violated” the Personal Conduct Policy.

Remember, Ben Roethlisberger was suspended six games (reduced to four) in 2010 for two sexual misconduct allegations, neither of which resulted in criminal charges. In 2017, Ezekiel Elliott was suspended six games for domestic violence allegations that ended in neither criminal nor civil claims. The league can, and will, do whatever it chooses — and the decisions quite often will be driven not by notions of fairness and justice but by balancing the P.R. consequences of taking action and not taking action.

On Monday, I suggested that the league should tell Watson that he can either settle the cases and take an unpaid suspension to start the season or keep fighting the cases and be placed on paid leave until they are resolved. I now believe the league won’t do that. The league won’t do that because the league doesn’t do that. It doesn’t telegraph its plans or tip its hand.

The league has learned to keep its head low and its mouth shut in these matters, or as long as it can. The league will act when the time comes to act. And I’m currently confident that, if 22 civil cases remain pending against Watson when it’s time to play games, Watson won’t be playing in those games.

The league won’t tell Watson or the Browns that. The league will expect Watson and the Browns to figure it out on their own. And the league will shed no tears and make no apologies if/when they decide to place Watson on paid leave, if Watson fails to get the cases settled before football season rolls around.

Caserio played the game well, never putting the league in a position that they had to take action. They choked down $10 million to Watson in a wink/wink deal that never forced his hand to play, so a CEL ruling never impacted his trade value. It's very smart on Caserio's part to be patient, never tip his hand, and be ready to work a deal.

Now, however, Cleveland will plan to play him in 2022 and this will force the league to take a confirmed position. And with a growing groundswell of backlash starting to brew, there is the potential that he sits out 2022 on the CEL or settles all 22 cases before the season starts. All it takes is 1 of the plaintiffs to force it to court for this to really catch fire.

So glad it is no longer Houston's problem.

Why are you putting so much energy defending Watson if you actually believe he is innocent? He already has a defense attorney. Also, why are you following me? Watson has been traded so shouldn’t you be on the Browns’ board?
