Save us Savage!!!!!!!

Savage became the starter in the middle of practice on Thursday? Not much time to prepare at all. A full week of practice with the 1s, and a game plan suited for him, should help out tremendously. That’s at least what I’m telling myself.

Watson came in at halftime against the Jags. Looked pretty good for a minute. Then kinda eh... he didn't display mastery of the offense on the short week against the Bengals on the road in his first start, but he didn't look like dog poo either. After a full week with a customized offense... kid looked like the future of the league.

Maybe Tom will have similar growth after a couple of weeks... Or another season ending injury.

Good point. Savage hasn't QB'd (as QB1) in back to back games during his entire NFL career. He gets a game here, a game there or a half at best. I'd just keep him under center and let the chips fall where they fall. If anything...the Texans lose out but us fans and maybe RS can thank him for helping to secure a good placement, pick wise, in the 2018 NFL Draft. Maybe along the way he gets to improve his value so he gets another chance elsewhere.

How in the world did we have this guy slotted as our starter all off-season? How has he made it on our roster 4 years?

Good in practice is one thing, good in a game is another.

Yes.

Aside. Keenum is 4-2 230 ypg 88.8 rating backing up Teddy in Minny. He couldn't buy a roster spot from OB.

In fairness, sometimes it just depends. Kurt Warner was MVP with the Rams, then sucked with the Giants, then played at MVP level again with the Cardinals.

It really looked like he was on a muscle relaxer, thinking slow and moving slow. Did he take one before the game to calm his nerves?

Case Keenum over Savage any day. Savage NEVER did anything in college. Keenum has gotten better. He is a pro. Savage just gets worse. Not Savage fault but BOB for keeping him over Keenum. We have no chance with Savage. Keenum we would still be fighting but he would have to overcome BOB's shortcomings. Time management, philosophy of not trying to win games but depend on our defense to stop them, and play calling. Maybe let Watson be offensive play caller while he is rehabbing. Too bad it won't matter because Savage is our savior. Again not Savage's fault, he is what he is. This is all on BOB and brain trust.

As an avid supporter of Savage, I'm here to eat my crow. Dude definitely doesn't have it. I don't think i've ever seen a qb fumble the ball after he's been hit as much as Savage has done in his 2.5 games as a starter.

I wouldn't describe myself as a Savage supporter but I did have hope that he would develop into a serviceable NFL quarterback.

That hope has disappeared.

Savage, Yates and Johnson. Roster building at its finest. :(

I felt like after all this time there must have been a reason why O'Brien was holding on to Savage and not diving right in with Watson to get his new first round QB ready to start on day one.

There apparently was not.

Whatever prep Watson got was obviously not a deterrent. He played very well.

Why they’ve kept Savage for so long, I don’t know. Probably because he’s way better in practice than in the game. I could see that, because it’s pressure that undoes Savage. I doubt he’s getting the type of pressure in practice as he does in game.

I realize that NFL starter level QB's don't grow on trees, but what did McNair, Smith, O'Brien ever see in Savage for the last 3 yrs. to indicate that he's worthy of being on a roster?

All I can deduce from the above is that Savage never seemed to be able to stay on the field long enough to make a judgement. There is only much that you can tell from practice.

Those who did play more or less played themselves off the team.

Now we see what we have in Savage and it is not encouraging.

I don't blame Obrien, he works with what he is presented.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Obrien in NY next year. Family rules at NRG.

Obrien released for Giants first rd pick? Stranger things have happened.

Welcome aboard cousin Lovie.

Agreed. We cut Louis Nix III, a third-round pick in that same 2014 draft class, a lot faster for doing nothing. We selected Tom Savage a round later and he's still here doing, well, doing a little something I guess. If sucking is something. I'll be eager to see if we re-sign Tom Savage this off-season.

Could we not have selected better players with those third and fourth-round picks? For that matter we drafted Sam Montgomery in the third round of the 2013 draft. Seems like we wasted a lot of draft picks in Rick Smith's tenure as GM Here. A lot of 2nd, 3rd and 4ths down the garbage bin, in particular. And we don't have a 1st or 2nd in the next draft. So it's important we hit a home run with our 3rd and 4th-round selections.

It's like, jeez, what the heck are the Texans scouts seeing?

This is the answer for why this team has no depth/turned into one of the worst teams in the NFL once the injury bug hit.

O'Brien inherited Keenum and Yates. Just another of many areas he could've kept a strong team together and built from within the framework. Keenum is looking good in Minny and Yates is back again. Instead, O'Brien has gone through more quarterbacks than the Browns, and has only stuck by one guy, the only quarterback to be groomed by this coaching staff - Tom Savage.

I have no animosity for Savage. None at all. I wanted to believe he was being held on to for a reason and that didn't work out but still, I don't like kicking guys while they're down because they're not up to the challenge of excelling at one of the hardest jobs on the planet.

Having said that I do think that we need to part ways with Tom Savage and we need to do so not out of animosity but just because he's a bad fit for what we are doing here. He's so far removed from the kind of player we're going to be starting at his position that there's no point in his staying on the roster at all. Maybe not immediately but when the season is over Tom should not be brought back. He needs to go look at trying to resurrect his career on a team that features a solid offensive line and that can consistently build a pocket around their QB. It's the only kind of situation he's going to be able to have any success at all in and I wish him whatever amount of success he's able to find going forward. I really do.

We just need a mobile QB who is ready to break out of the pocket when he senses pressure. I know those aren't easy to come by and the backup may be more of a "busting out of the pocket to run" than a "busting out of the pocket to extend the play and find an open receiver" kind of guy but if that's what it takes then so be it.

I know it's kind of crazy but has anyone considered looking at Greg Ward as a possible backup QB? He's small no doubt but I can't imagine he would be less effective today in our offense than Tom Savage has been. If not Ward then there must be a number of mobile but maybe not ideal college guys out there who would fit the mold of backup to DW4 better than the dudes we have on our roster right now.

Steelbtexan the Cowboys lost their stud LT and his replacement gave up 6 sacks.

I pointed that out to say depth is an issue to practically every NFL team. Not just the Texans

Garrett is a dumba** for not giving Green some help. Even Gruden spoke about this last night. Otherwise I agree with your post.
