Ryan Mallett

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
Stay tuned RT @R_Crossingham==> Chance for a deal tonight?

It's a negotiation, major swing in it recently

Winding road takes a turn in the Texans' fans favor:

If Ryan Mallett stays in Houston, expect a hometown discount given. May not see Tues

Sincerely hoping you saw the post I made in response to this before it got deleted by the coolest lead moderator on the planet.

I didn't, but it's ok.

I don't get your dislike for BOB. I thought he did a good job last yr, especially for a rookie HC who lost all 3 QB's and won the last 2 games with an off the street FA QB.

You saw how the Cards did with a more talented team after losing 2 QB's as a comparison.

And I wasn't talking about OB. I was talking about what fans "we" want when we say get a QB.

OB got one free pass year trotting a placeholder out at QB at least in my book. I'm not fine with a 2nd. Hoyer or Fitz starting would be a 2nd IMO.

You expect him to pull a quality starting QB out of his rear? Neither the market nor the roster are saturated with them. Mallet and Hoyer are not only our best but they're our only options. Savage damn sure isn't ready. What do you pretend we do?

Then who is this greater starter he is supposed to get? Where? What us he supposed to pull one out from a genie bottle? He hasn't had a shot at one. You're just looking to have a reason to bash the HC knowing good and well this team really can't make itself a real contender until we find a QB.

Texans want to sign Mallett before he hits market, then try to sign Hoyer.

After day of negotiations Texans make progress with Mallett and could be closing in on deal.

Hearing both Mallett and Hoyer could be wrapped up. Sooner rather than later. #Texans

Tania Ganguli ‏@taniaganguli
The #Texans are indeed getting closer with Ryan Mallett. Hoyer is still in the works.

So someone from Mallett's team leaked this?
They don't reveal sources.

They don't reveal sources.

This makes me feel a little bit better.

I really want to lock Mallet down and roll the dice on him. He is all we got.

Landing Hoyer as a backup would be a really solid plan if we can pull it off though. If he is forced to start at any point he would be capable of winning games here. We wouldn't want that scenario, but I don't think that it would be as bad as what people think.

Never thought I'd agree that Mallett and Hoyer on the same team was a "solid plan" but the Texans pulled it off. This is the best case scenario.

Texans’ 2015 QB situation could include both Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer

Posted on March 8, 2015 | By John McClain

If their price is right, the Texans can have quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer competing for the starting job next season.

But interest from multiple teams might drive up Hoyer’s price too high for the Texans, who are trying to re-sign Mallett and outside linebacker Brooks Reed.

After re-signing right tackle Derek Newton and cornerback Kareem Jackson on Saturday, the Texans turned their attention to Mallett and Reed.

Coach Bill O’Brien is excited to have back Jackson and Newton.

“What we try to do is do the best we can to keep our core players together, and Kareem and Derek are two guys that are core players,” O’Brien said Sunday at the Sowciak Olympics of Houston annual fundraiser. “They’re agreat example of hard work and perseverance.

“Guys that come into this organization and are good citizens and play hard and do everything that they’re asked of, they’re going to get rewarded, and that’s what happened with Kareem and Derek.”

The Texans would like to get Mallett and Reed under contract before they hit the open market on Tuesday.

Josh McCown’s three-year, $14 million contract with Cleveland seems to be the starting point in negotiations for veteran quarterbacks.

Although free agency begins at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, teams can negotiate with agents for any player whose contract expires at the deadline that signals the start of the new league year.

They can sign their free agents anytime but can’t sign opposing free agents until the start of free agency.

It’s clear – but certainly not guaranteed – that second-year coach Bill O’Brien wants to have Mallett and Hoyer competing for the starting job.

Hoyer, 29, has at least four teams interested. The Texans and New York Jets would give him a chance to compete for the starting job. San Francisco and Buffalo would want him as a backup.

New Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan, who was the Texans’ director of college scouting, wants Hoyer to compete with Geno Smith. The Jets have more cap space than the Texans.

The Jets also like Mallett. Maccagnan could zero in on Hoyer or Mallett — the one who doesn’t sign first with the Texans.

If the Texans are able to sign Mallett and Hoyer, Ryan Fitzpatrick could be headed to the Jets. Maccagnan also is familiar with Fitzpatrick from last season.

Fitzpatrick has one year left on his contract at $3.25 million. If he is cut or traded, the Texans could add that total to their cap space.

If Hoyer comes to Houston, it would be like a family reunion.

In 2011, O’Brien was New England’s offensive coordinator. George Godsey, the Texans’ quarterbacks coach, was an offensive assistant with the Patriots. Hoyer was in his third season with O’Brien. Mallett was a rookie third-round draft choice.

In 2009 and 2010, Hoyer backed up Tom Brady.

In 2012, the Patriots kept Mallett over Hoyer, who went from New England to Pittsburgh to Arizona and to Cleveland in 2013. He played the last two seasons with the Browns.

Hoyer was 3-0 as a starter in 2013 before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. He was 7-6 last season, including 6-3 before he finished 1-3 and turned it over to rookie Johnny Manziel.

After beginning the season with seven touchdown passes and one interception during a 3-2 start, Hoyer finished with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Fitzpatrick is still recovering from the fractured fibula he suffered in the Dec. 14 loss at Indianapolis. He’s expected to make a complete recovery.

Fitzpatrick, 32, played one of his best seasons in 12 starts last season. He threw for 2,483 yards, completed 63.1 percent, had 17 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a career-best 95.3 rating.

Good lord guys, I've made real clear a potential long term starter. Mallett fits the bill and looks like the best option this year. Need to get it done.

I do think it is a mistake to bring in Hoyer if he costs any more than Fitz. But not a huge one.

There may be a dynamic between those two that O'Brien wants to recapture. They spent a lot of time together.

But the more probable reason is that O'Brien is hedging his bet. Whether it's truly indicative of his durability or not, Mallett did miss time with injury. If Mallett does turn out to have durability concerns, Hoyer gives O'Brien the best chance to not fall below 9-7.

Ok, you're allowed to go to sleep now. Texans' deals will be done in the morning. I'd expect to see a deal done for Mallett & Hoyer.

:kitten:

Does he? I will certainly hope for the best if they go that route and Mallett gets injured but it's purely on trust. Hoyer hasn't sniffed playing as well as Fitz last year. And while I am sure he will get back into "the system" it's been three years since he was in it and he has zero starts in it.

Fitz is already an expensive backup. Hope they don't spend much more on Hoyer. Folks were upset spending $2 mil for Orlovsky as a backup. Anyway, minor deal.

My best guess is Fitz is dealt to the NY jets right after something is announced.

The Browns have had like 75 quarterbacks in the last 15 years, and even *they* didn't want Brian Hoyer.

LMFAO.

That tells you just how bad the Texans QB situation is .... Mallett & Hoyer .... :slapfight:

I just hope they don't cripple themselves going forward to have both now .... cause I don't believe either is the long term solution.

Well....to be fair....the Browns didn't have The System Of God in place for Jesus Hoyer to thrive.

Someone please .... explain to me what the hell OB has done to be considered such a great offensive mind / qb guru .... coach Tom Brady .... under Belichick ?!

I'm willing to give BOB/Mallett the benefit of the doubt. How Mallett progresses will be a sign of how good BOB is with QB's.

I mean Fitz as limited talentwise as he is finished with a career high 95 rating under BOB and that's nothing to sneeze at. IMHO

I'm really interested see what BOB can do with an arm talent like Mallett.

I'd like to know that myself. But I've never gotten a solid answer other than the brief association with Brady/Belichick so I just let it go.

That's the same number of HC and OC they had in that time too. I don't blame last years debacle on Hoyer. I blame it on the FO...as I blame all their other issues.

Done??

After long negotiations and the New York Jets being part of the roadblock the Houston Texans have re-signed Ryan Mallett.

The Houston Texans have re-signed free agent quarterback Ryan Mallett for the upcoming season. After pending negotiations and some talk between him and the New York Jets, the Texans are ready to move forward with Mallett on their quarterback depth char

Don't know how solid that source is.

Same source is saying we also got Hoyer.

The Houston Texans have added another piece to their 53 man roster and will add free agent quarterback Brian Hoyer.

To add to the Houston Texans free agent acquisitions, Brian Hoyer will also be added to the quarterback depth chart. This reunites Hoyer with his quarterback coach and offensive coordinator when he was with the New England Patriots, Bill O’Brien. He will also be rejoining Ryan Mallett, who was in the same quarterback room as Hoyer while both were in New England in 2011.

So you hate everybody who has played/coached in New England?

Hating on success?

Better find a new team to root for. The Texans are being modeled after the Pats org,

I hate the idea that anyone wants____________North/East/South/West instead of HOUSTON!

We need others to emulate US!

If it took eight weeks for O'Brien to replace Fitzpatrick with Mallett
and O'Brien wants to acquire Hoyer as insurance against Mallett's performance
Then possibly O'Brien isn't as confident in Mallett as many fans think he is or are themselves.

Or speaks volumes in his lack of faith in Fitz and Keenum. We know Savage isn't ready and got to have a backup that will give you some kind of chance to win
