Ryan Mallett

I think the plan was to have him take over about now.

Let him play 5 games.

If he's good, then we'd be silly not to let him play the last two and give up a 6th round pick for him. And we can try to re-sign him.

If he's NOT good, then we stick Savage in there and we give up a 7th two years from now for him and let him walk.

5 games is a pretty short eval period for him, but so is 7 so...

I could see giving Mallett six games and if we're out of the playoff picture the final week starting Fitzpatrick. That is the only scenario where Mallett isn't playing all seven games.

I'm optimistic for the kid. I do not expect great things out of the gate, but I do think this is a great situation for him. He's got a great HC that has history with him and obviously believes in him. He's running a system that he's been studying for 3 1/2 years, most as an understudy to a HoF QB in the same system. He's got high quality talent at key positions, WRx2, HB, LT, and a great defense.

Seriously have not felt this optimistic about the Texans since 2012. I'm not going to predict a run, but I do think it is within the realm of realistic possibilities.

what makes u think that ..???? what if mallet stinks it up then im sure savage will get a shot

Besides playing musical chairs with his college career, spreading his 31 college games over 5 years and 3 enrolled universities? A career that must have made his grasping of the position something akin to trying to take the SAT during an earthquake. Maybe the fact that we added not only a veteran qb in the offseason but also traded for an educated guess to place above him on the depth chart. Maybe the way they've carefully gone about inserting Mallett into the role. Which is a guy who's had as beneficial an understudy role as any young qb could, polar opposite that of Savage.

Maybe all of those things makes me think they'd prefer a very measured approach to Savage getting his shot. Measured I'd guess to about 2015 at the earliest if they can help it. Even if Mallett stinks it up I imagine they'd prefer to continue running him out or re-inserting Fitz to end the season than chucking Savage out there haphazardly.

This.

And one more thing, physical tools for the position. The size and arm strength.

Blah blah blah blah. We gotta 'nother week and two days to find out what the **** is up with the Mullet. Personally, I can't wait. It should at least be different. Different bad or different good I don't know, but at least it'll be different.

You know, I've thinking about that all day. I think if I were O'Brien, I would have told the team and the team alone. Then sprung the change out on game day. Anyone who leaks the news early gets cut or at least docked a couple of game checks. That way the Browns spend all week getting ready for Fitz and -BAM!- out comes Mallett.

Browns don't really have anything to prepare for now other than knowing he has a strong arm...

Maybe the safteys will play really high and corners with huge cushions...

He got pretty upset with one of the reporters when they suggested he would do something like that.

It was probably his plan, but his anger got the better of him. I'd have done it anyway, then after the game tell them, "I lied."

well....not only that, but the word could get out that we actually have TEs on the roster that Mallett might throw to

I hope not , it is not Mallets game if he succeeds it will be deep .

I think Mallett succeeds with a strong Arian Foster and some quick outs and hitting slants and TE's over the middle to pull the safety's up, then hitting a deep pass or two

I watched his limited time in preseason and didn't see any Deep throws. They were mostly short to medium passes. While we ridicule preseason play, it's a better tool for judgement of NFL potential than college tape in my not so humble opinion.

A lot of QB could succeed with a RB of Fosters talent, but we need one who can also succeed when we do not have Foster and he can carry the team on his shoulders.

Cleveland is now a good team. Good time to throw Mallett in and see what he does. I have no preconceptions for Mallett other than his lack of game experience. And he's fixing to get that.

Yeah, we haven't seen one of those since when? Asking Mallett to carry the team in his first couple starts might be a recioe for disaster

That would delay the evaluation process. At some point, it must be determined if Mallett can succeed each week against teams that prepare for him... Surprising a team on game day could be advantageous, but it says nothing about his ability to be a starter in the NFL.

maybe mallett will start the game but fitz will go in after 1 drive

You'll have the six subsequent games for that.
I'd rather have the victory

I predict that the first play from scrimmage will be deep down the middle to a streaking AJ for a TD. NFL, meet Mr. Ryan Mallett. :D

Honestly, I would love to see a laser to Damaris Johnson. Reminiscent of the opening play in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State: Link. Your play would work too, though. :kitten:

I hope we run a draw... I hope Cleveland will be backed up looking for that big bomb.

Hello everyone, LONG time lurker

If it hasnt already been said, I think the offense will run much faster with Mallett at QB. That could be good-fast or bad-fast, but still faster in general.

Hopefully this helps the defense learn how to play better against teams that use the hurry up.

Howdy! Welcome to the board.

I'm hoping for the best. He looks to make much quicker decisions in the little I saw of him from this past pre season. Not much else to go by

I hope we can learn to score efficiently, say... 60% of our possessions. Hopefully that'll put pressure on the other team to score... making them one dimensional & predictable.

Welcome.

I think Mallett just going with the playcall more often will speed up the pace. I'd like to see a chart of how successful Fitz's checks were. Not that I know just how to determine that.

Hope so. I know OB has been frustrated with the drawn out hurry-up, and the bottleneck appeared to be Fitz. They tried different ways to get his clock moving faster with little success, so now they're trying a different QB. We'll see.

I'm not expecting Mallett to light it up. Every player on offense has been missing assignments and getting flagged. OB talked about one play earlier this season where two receivers ran the wrong routes and one offensive lineman blocked the wrong assignment. One play. These guys need to grow up and sharpen up.

And welcome to TTalk. :texflag:

I'm predicting something much less dramatic for Malletts initial NFL play: hand off to Foster going off tackle.

It's been mentioned before, even by OB, but one area of concern about Mallet is his accuracy and his completion percentage. The Chronicle this morning gave his completion percentage as around 60%. So I went and googled his high school and collegiate statistics.

His high school stats are in question - I got conflicting reports - but it seems his soph year he completed 48% with 18 TD's and 10 interception; jr year: 60%, 21 TD's, 6 interceptions; sr year: 48% with 31 TD's and only 3 interceptions.

His collegiate career included one year at Michigan and his final two at Arkansas. At Michigan he had a 43% completions with 7 TD's and 5 interceptions. His first season at Arkansas he had 55% completions with 30 TD's and 7 interceptions. His senior season he had 65% completion and 32 TD's with 12 interceptions.

Now, he's had three years of seasoning, so I expect a quick transition to a starting role; and I expect a relatively modest completion percentage of 60-65%. I hope he continues his past performance with a high TD/INT ratio. Pair this with our running game and we may still make a run at a playoff slot.

I can kind of understand looking at college stuff....

But high school?

Just wondering why that's relevant???

It's just numbers to help paint a picture of a guy with whom we really don't know how he will be on the field. I'm glad he went around digging for those statistics, because it's not like there's a whole lot of NFL numbers we can use to get an idea of who/what Mallett is.

I really hope Mallett works for the Texans, but I'm not so sure he's just going to come out guns blazing in week 1, especially with the Browns who I believe have a couple different players in their secondary with 4+ interceptions.

I'm excited about how Mallet looked today.

He only had 1 bad play that I remember. Got the ball out very quickly, handled the blitz well and made throws. Seems like his receivers aren't used to catching balls thrown this hard. Hopefully the drops get better going forward.

I'm excited about how Mallet looked today.

I am, too!

But, I got excited how Kennum looked after his first game, too. So, I'm going keep that in perspective, and see how he performs after teams get some film on him.

i loved seeing mallet throw to martin, little johnson, and graham. excellent distribution. his poise in the pocket is excellent so far.

Difference is, Keenum never won his first game... or any games for that matter.

Good **** from Mallett. Hopefully he keeps it going and we can keep the offense versatile. More play action and tight end involvement, please.

While I totally agree - there is a decisive difference: Keenum is lacking some things that you can't teach. Mallet has prototypical size and one of the strongest arms in the NFL.

He had great pocket presence and got rid of the ball quickly finding lots of different receivers. That's encouraging. He is throwing bullets but we knew that already. He wasn't really accurate though - I guess this (and him taking chances) could be the main thing holding him back.

But so far I like what I am seeing!

I thought he looked pretty accurate, except a few. also had a few drops that hit the receivers square.

Can't wait to watch the game tomorrow night. I had to listen to it on Sirius. Sounded like he had a lot drops. It also seemed like OB went all Kubiak with the running game and Blue delivered.

None of the announcers mentioned Mallet having accuracy problems, but I was listening to the Texans broadcast. They mentioned his rocket laser arm plenty of times.
