But... doesn't a three piece include a vest? Jacket, vest, pants?

Totally agree, and I wanted so bad for Keenum to be the guy (UH Alum here). Case only had a couple tricks up his sleeve mostly in the long ball and scrambling, but once blitzed could not find a hot read to save his life. I saw Mallet throw deep, sideline routes, hot reads, play actions and seeming do a good job of directing traffic all in yesterdays game. I'm not anointing him yet, but his in game IQ (in this small sample) shows much better than anyone since 3 years ago Schaub on this roster.
I wish we had started Ryan Mallett way back when. As early as the Cowboys game. We may have beaten the Cowboys and Colts with his canon arm. If we had just beaten the Colts we'd be in first place in the AFC South right now. As it stands now we're only one game back with a 5-5 record. We probably should be 7-3 if we had went to Mallett sooner.
But oh well, like J.J. Watt said in his post-game conference last night. "one game at a time. Let's go beat the Bengals now and pick up another win." If we can just finish strong and let's say we win all six games left, including a franchise changing victory at Indianapolis for the first time ever, we may win the AFC South at 11-5. I think the Colts could realistically end up 10-6 or 9-7. They may lose two or three more games.
This was my overall take away as well...he showed poise and control. Nothing said that more than the 2 minute drill before the half. He really seemed to know what he was doing. If he continues to show that, i think he/we will be alright.
This was his first game in the NFL and already put the same stats as a 10 year vet. He still has more games to go, but he played very well and seemed poised out there, something I didn't see Fitz do in 9 games.

The most unexpected outcome for me was, this...

Three-piece suit, pretty polished and composed, thoughtful answers, complimentary of his teammates, engaging of the media. Color me surprised.

Well said, man. I like his obvious command of the offense both in terms of obviously being comfortable as a leader and the reception his offense gave him as their new leader.
He did not look rattled at all during any part of the game. Even after the INT, which took a potential FG off the board, he looked determined more than anything else. I never saw a "wtf?" look on his face, but rather he was talking to his teammates and getting ready for the next possession.
Even little details like pausing during a snap count when two players went in motion impressed me. He stepped up and told Meyers to reset the count, waited for his offense to set, and then got the snap. That kind of attention to small details makes a big difference.
He looked like he was having fun out there, and I think that attitude is infectious. You can tell by the interviews with other players that they are excited about him being out there.
The jury is still out, of course, but I'll say it right here that I feel like the Texans have their QB. This guy and O'Brien have history. This is the guy our HC wanted, coached him in the same system as a rookie, and he got a 3 year learning experience from one of the greatest QBs and head coaches that can never been underestimated as it pertains to development.
I'm excited about the Texans future for the first time in a long time. If that's drinking koolaid, so be it. Pour me another cup!![]()
Oh come on bro. Get off that fence.
MSR
Stats are not all that matters. His passing yards are irrelevant, especially with how easily we were killing them with the run. Should we pass just to prove Mallett can pass? No, you keep doing what they cannot stop. Brady yesterday checked out of a play just before the half getting greedy and it cost him. Manning the same thing. Mallet did exactly what he needed to do.
Indeed!
Well at least 6 wins difference. Must suck though to go from first to last in your division in just one game. Glad we are not playing in that division. lol Sucks to be a Browns fan today.
Agreed!
For me, it was not just the zip on Mallett's passes that made the difference. More important was his anticipation. As soon as those players running short routes turned their head around the ball was there. That was not happening with Fitz. He always held on to the ball to long and rarely anticipated his throws. Mainly because he lacks the arm strength Mallett possess.
Yea it's only one game, but he looked great considering the circumstances. No question at all he understands the system and reads the D than Fitz could ever hope to. I may have to reconsider my 8-8 prediction with Mallett under center. I can feel our first win in Indy just around the corner especially if Foster is 100% by then.

I could be wrong but I do not remember Mallett throwing a pass to AJ behind the line of scrimmage hoping he would do something with it. AJ must be extremely grateful.
I want to see what happens when teams load the box and dare Mallet to beat them.
I know Fitz failed that test. ...when the game was on Fitz's shoulders we fans were in clench mode.
For the record, I think Mallet will pass that test because of the command of this offense that he showed on Sunday.
...but hold my koolaid for one more week.
Browns did that early until Mallett tossed a couple deep throws on them... when he connected on one they stopped
That's because the Browns suck.
Pittsburgh didn't stop going after Mettenberger after he scored on them twice & it worked out pretty well for them.
St. Louis knew there was a risk in blitzing Manning. But sitting back & getting picked apart didn't sound conducive to winning either.
you keep railing on that bad Cleveland team and giving the Texans no credit
I don't understand why you're trying to denigrate the Texans or the Browns. Any given Sunday ya know?
I'm just very disappointed in the Browns. .. I thought they would have been better. But I can't think of one thing they do well. I didn't think much of Hoyer & Hayden is the only guy on their team worth mentioning.
Before the game I thought their record was inflated, but I thought they had two quality wins... but the Steelers are a true Jeckle&Hyde team & we're about to find out what's what with the Bengals.
You are what your record says you are... at the end of the season. I don't think the Browns will finish 8-8.

So you don't think this was a quality win by the Texans. If the Browns finish 8-8 or better, will that change your tune? If the Texans finish 8-8 or better as a result of beating crappy teams like the Browns, will you be hyped up about the Texans? Most importantly, how does this play into your national rankings formula?

I think the team's play against the Cowboys, Indy, & Pittsburgh were better gauges of how good this team is than the win over Cleveland. I look at that game no different than the Raider's & Redskin's win. We dominated against a bad team.
At some point wins are wins. The Raiders and Redskins have a combined 3 wins in 20 games. The Browns have 6 wins in 10 games. 15% winning v. 60% winning - yes, there's a difference.
It's like the DPOY award. You can go by stats, you can go by W-Ls, or you can watch the game. Regardless of what their record is, the Browns are not a good team, or at least they didn't play like one Sunday.

I honestly think JJ Watt made them look worse than what they are. I'm starting to realize Watt is becoming a legend and I was taking it for granted.
If Mallett continues to improve, and Watt continues his dominance, then we may just go to the playoffs this year.![]()
if not the playoffs, outside looking in with a 10-6, 9-7 record is a very positive thing going into next year knowing you have a QB that can help you get wins.
and those records are not to far fetched with their remaining record.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a winning record at this point and missing the playoffs. Maybe if the qb situation is taken care of, we can start adding talent at other positions in the draft.
Are you suggesting we'll also be getting a new GM?
The one thing I hadn't considered is how his play was going to open up the running game by making the Browns open up the box. I never expected that day from Blue and I think with Fitzy, we wouldn't have gotten it.
As long as Mallet keeps up his performance the offensive will again go into a pick-your-poison for the opposing team's defense/DC, and with Foster's return the poison will be a bit more fatal!
11-5 baby!!!![]()
I don't think I saw enough opportunities of tough situations to say for a fact that Mallett is better than my initial evaluation of him. He's certainly earned the chance to show us more, but I worry that if an enterprising defense man-covers his receivers up and down the board and sends pressure after him, the results won't be pretty.
Rivers McCown isn't all that impressed with Mallett
With a great defense and consistently solid running game, all this team needs from Mallet is to be a game manager that does not make mistakes. They do not need a QB that can put the team on his back right now, and I think that is the key to understanding what O'Brien has in mind for his style of "complementary football".
If Mallett ends up being a QB that can carry a team, great! However, he does not have to be that for this team to be successful.
For those who can't get enough of toying around with the idea that we may actually have an honest to goodness quarterback:
More Vines & Kind Words
The day I start making my decision on whether my teams QB is good or not based on this dorks opinion, I'll just stop watching football.
