If it turns into a 6th, Mallet took over 40% of the snaps in 2014... that's worth a 6th.
If Mallet takes over 40% of the snaps this year, we are in deep do-do.

Now that Ryan Mallett is a Texan, let's tie up some loose ends on "Tex."
Mallett and his laser-rocket arm sat on the board until the third round of the 2011 draft because of rumored off-field issues including drug use. In three seasons with the Patriots he went from a guarded, smirking kid with an awful body to a mature, outgoing NFL player who took the job seriously. He went back and got his degree. He handled himself over the past few months like a professional. He's so far different than the player who came here...
not if 40% of those snaps result in wins...
So let's say OB truly believes there might be a future for Fitzpatrick & Savage.
Imagine Mallet never takes a snap for the Houston Texans.
He becomes an unrestricted FA next season & we don't even make an offer.
We lose a 7th round pick in 2016.
I think that is more likely to happen, than OB trying to get Mallet into the starting lineup.
Mallet is not going to be a successful NFL QB. But, if he does...
Mallet is not going to be a successful NFL QB. But, if he does, and takes us to the super bowl, then I will change my opinion. For now, out of the three of them, my favorite is Doc Savage, but that's only because of his name and there's lots of Doc Savage pictures to find and post.
Thomas is 60-36 as the Falcons GM. Richard Seymour had 2 Pro Bowls seasons after he was dealt. Asante Samuel had 3. Crennel, Mangini, and McDanels did't get it done as head coaches. None had head coaching experience prior. O'Brien has the experience and was successful. There's reason there to believe this will be different. There is a very strong propensity for players and coaches alike that leave the Belichick nest and get out from underneath Belichick's thumb, to fail miserably after leaving the nest. Unfortunately for the Texans they're LLLOOOAAADDDEEEDDD with folks who have left that nest.
Doc Savage looked more like Duck Sausage in the pre-season. Better hope he develops quick...

I don't really like any of our QBs right now. And yes, I'm just being a sore loser because Keenum is gone. haha

What is it you dislike about him?
Well maybe you already answered.
In all honestly, both Mallet and Savage have a chance to become something better with our new coaching staff. The question remains, Will They? I'm sure we all hope the answer to that is Yes otherwise we wouldn't be Texan fans.
As to Fitzypoo, he's garbage, always been garbage, and I have no expectations of him to be anything else.

This whole talk about the value of Mallet being low because Bellichek disposed of him is really pointless, he was going to be a free agent next year.
Hes caught on pretty fast. Hes got a good arm. Pretty confident, not afraid to make any throws, Duane Brown on @Ryan_mallett_15 #Texans
Before interview, @Ryan_mallett_15 stopped everybody so he could thank patriots organization for everything. Then said happy to be a Texan.
Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlantObservation about Ryan Mallett: He tall.
Mallett played Washington in the preseason and practiced against them for a week. Said he's been showing notes to new teammates.
James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSNRyan Mallett says his first few days have been a whirlwind. Knowing OB has made it easier. #Texans
QB Fitzpatrick says Mallett comes in with decent knowledge of the system but somewhat dift so he'll still have a lot of catching up to do.
Tania Ganguli ‏@taniaganguliMallett said he knows what George Godsey is thinking because of their past working together. If there is something he doesn't know, easy to ask
Ryan Mallett has the Pats speak down. Asked about what he's learned from Brady, said he he'd be here all day listing them.
"I'm definitely the shortest guy in the room now," Ryan Fitzpatrick on how the quarterback room has changed with Mallett's addition #Texans
I kinda see it the same way.
However, just last week we believed our season hinged on the play of Fitzpatrick, Keenum, and/or Savage.
Today we believe our season hinges on the play of Fitzpatrick, Mallet, or Savage.
I feel better now than I did last week. Marginally... but better.

Having read the Grantland article, I'm even more impressed with BB. That offense seems to be rooted more in the coach's ability to teach than the player's ability to learn. It's very hard to teach a concept to multiple individuals in ways that they can understand the concept, considering the different ways people can understand a concept.
If OB can be half the innovator of that system as BB has been, the Texans should be in could hands on both sides of the ball for years to come. Vrabel appears to be a DC/HC in the making.
Unless Belichick was doing someone a favor. Yeah, no. that's not going to happen.
I find that hard to believe. 3 years of work on fundamentals, like footwork, etc. have not changed his outlook? All of the film room stuff over the last 3 years and talking about strategy with Brady and the Hoodie means nothing? 3 full camps, and full season practices have not improved him as a player?
That's really hard to believe.
Really good film break down of Mallett's pre season with the Pats. Hard to not get a little excited after reading this

I hope so. I see Mallett starting sooner rather than later.![]()
"The Hoddie" taking care of a friend, no make that a "real friend", when it comes to securing compensation for a player on his roster who he may have already over-drafted ? Dang DB, up to now I was unaware of your considerable comedic skills. Not usually with Belichick, but I would not be surprised if he made an exception with O'Brien. They are still good friends, gave him a glowing recommendation to McNair for the hire, as well as to Romeo Crennel to come here as O'Brien's DC. That is not just just professional courtesy, but something real friends would do for each other.

Matter of fact, I want to see the reigns given to Mallett from game one. I don't care if we don't have as full of a play book and game plan.

I think Fitzmagic knew coming in he was a place holder for a QB of the future.
He was holding the place until week 1 of the season?

I just said that I would not be surprised. Purely conjecture on my part, but I figured you'd be smart enough to figure that part out.
Besides, like EllisUnit said, Mallet was all but gone with the Patriots drafting Jimmy Garoppolo, so there is obviously football team management in this scenario.
Did you watch "A Football Life" when they documented a year in the life of Bill Belichick? He's not the Darth Vader character some of you like to believe in. I know black and white is easiest to perceive, but life tends to be a little more nuanced in its vast gray areas. Thinking outside of our little boxes is not as dangerous as you might imagine.
If so, now that the league has had several years to check him out, how come the most the Pats got for him was a 7th round pick ? A 2016 7th round pick ? No, he was absolutely over-drafted.Over-drafted? LOL. What's comedic is you selling Belichick as too savvy to cut a friend a deal on the one hand and on the other basically calling him a sucker for having drafted Mallett in the first place. On talent Mallett was a first rounder and his stock dropped on the drug story. He wasn't over-drafted.
But see I get all nervous and confused, sweaty palms, then real frustrated and upset with all that "gray area" stuff. That's why I like the easy stuff, the black & white stuff. Please keep it black & white, 'cause I like those little boxes.

(on what kind of role did Bill Belichick play in his career) “We played a big role. He hired me to be a coaching assistant in 2007. I’m the first coach in the history of football to go from 0-12 at Duke University to being 18-0 before we lost the last game, 18-1. He gave me that opportunity and then promoted me up through the ranks there. I owe him a great deal. I learned a lot from him. I think that’s well-documented. I’ve said that a number of times. He’s been a great friend and mentor to me in this profession.”
~ Bill O'Brien, March 24, 2014

If he really said "accompanied" instead of "accustomed", I'm afraid his learning the system is going to be a slow process. There are a few just similarities with the playbook, but there are also some differences," Mallett said. "Im just trying to get accompanied to it, just trying to study, keep my head down and keep moving.
