Now that Ryan Mallett is a Texan, let's tie up some loose ends on "Tex."

Mallett and his laser-rocket arm sat on the board until the third round of the 2011 draft because of rumored off-field issues including drug use. In three seasons with the Patriots he went from a guarded, smirking kid with an awful body to a mature, outgoing NFL player who took the job seriously. He went back and got his degree. He handled himself over the past few months like a professional. He's so far different than the player who came here...

There is a very strong propensity for players and coaches alike that leave the Belichick nest and get out from underneath Belichick's thumb, to fail miserably after leaving the nest. Unfortunately for the Texans they're LLLOOOAAADDDEEEDDD with folks who have left that nest.

Mallet is not going to be a successful NFL QB. But, if he does, and takes us to the super bowl, then I will change my opinion. For now, out of the three of them, my favorite is Doc Savage, but that's only because of his name and there's lots of Doc Savage pictures to find and post.

Thomas is 60-36 as the Falcons GM. Richard Seymour had 2 Pro Bowls seasons after he was dealt. Asante Samuel had 3. Crennel, Mangini, and McDanels did't get it done as head coaches. None had head coaching experience prior. O'Brien has the experience and was successful. There's reason there to believe this will be different.

We dont know that for sure..... Most likely your right, but there is always that slim chance he could become a HOF QB. SLIM CHANCE, but it still exists !

That sounds reasonable, but I don't see it because he elevated Mallett immediately to #2 without even having the guy take one snap in Houston.

Also, there is more than one way he could take 40% of the snaps and still not be worth it.

If Fitz gets injured in week #1 and Tom just cant shake being a rookie, Ryan could very well get more than 40% of the snaps and we could still only win 4-6 games..

there's no way I want that to happen, but there are a multitude of ways we could lose a very early 6th round pick and have had an awful season with nothing from "The Texas Hammer"..

In all honestly, both Mallet and Savage have a chance to become something better with our new coaching staff. The question remains, Will They? I'm sure we all hope the answer to that is Yes otherwise we wouldn't be Texan fans.

As to Fitzypoo, he's garbage, always been garbage, and I have no expectations of him to be anything else.
 
This whole talk about the value of Mallet being low because Bellichek disposed of him is really pointless, he was going to be a free agent next year, if Brady goes down their chance to win it all is basically nil, Garropolo is there for 3 years, Garropolo(3years)+Roster Spot this year > Mallet (1 year). His possible growth or ceiling and its importance and value to the Patriots is non existent because they already have Brady and someone under contract. As it was mentioned Bellichek traded way some real good players, and it was not because they were worthless just that the other end of the deal was worth more to them going forward. I am not sure why people think Bellichek is this master con artist, its possible for both teams to come out better in the end.

These two guys are peas in a pod. If any coach has ever defined a type QB he wants, OB just did it.

I like that both fell to where they did for correctable off field issues for the most part. That's where coaching has a chance to shine and bring a diamond out of the rough.

Yeah he is, but I would be a lot more critical if the entire FA class wasn't garbage this offseason.

I kinda see it the same way.

However, just last week we believed our season hinged on the play of Fitzpatrick, Keenum, and/or Savage.

Today we believe our season hinges on the play of Fitzpatrick, Mallet, or Savage.

I feel better now than I did last week. Marginally... but better.

We all hate it when our pet favorites get let go or traded, that's just part of being a fan. But I'm not sure if I feel any better about our QB situation than before Keenum left. I still think Keenum will make a fine QB some day. We'll see. I just hope one of the three of our QBs get's it. I don't actually give a **** which one, and I'll eat the crow dinner if it's Fiztypoo, I just want to win some frigging games.

I agree completely. That article is very enlightening and educational from a variety of perspectives.

I think that offense explains a lot in NE, as well as helps to understand how Cassel took over with success when Brady went down. Too bad that this offense wasn't what he was getting in KC.

Not usually with Belichick, but I would not be surprised if he made an exception with O'Brien. They are still good friends, gave him a glowing recommendation to McNair for the hire, as well as to Romeo Crennel to come here as O'Brien's DC. That is not just just professional courtesy, but something real friends would do for each other.

And let's be honest: Belichick most likely cares about his legacy, and no doubt he'd like to see at least one of his coaching tree branches actually grow instead of wilting away and falling off. Helping O'Brien with some backup QB that he was part of drafting, a QB that they had no intention of keeping, I honestly do not see how it would be that far of a stretch to believe.

I agree completely. For Mallet to get three years to sit in meeting rooms with Brady and Belichick, absorb their work ethics, leadership qualities, study habits, and overall approach to preparing for football week in and week out, I am sure that had to rub off on him.

I feel good about this deal for a number of reasons. I cannot predict what Mallet will ultimately turn out to be, but for the first time in a while, I feel some optimism seeping into me as a fan.

Mallett was going to be a Free agent next off season anyways, i'm sure they were just wanting to get something for him rather than get nothing. I wouldn't consider what we gave for him to say that is actually all he is worth.

He has had 4 snaps in the regular season so there isn't much to go off of for us to give anything more for him IMO>

Besides, like EllisUnit said, Mallet was all but gone with the Patriots drafting Jimmy Garoppolo, so there is obviously football team management in this scenario.

Did you watch "A Football Life" when they documented a year in the life of Bill Belichick? He's not the Darth Vader character some of you like to believe in. I know black and white is easiest to perceive, but life tends to be a little more nuanced in its vast gray areas. Thinking outside of our little boxes is not as dangerous as you might imagine.

I said a long time ago that I'd take Mallett over every QB on our roster. Nothing has changed for me.

I think Mallett has some things to clean up, but he has a chance to be really good IMO. Especially with that arm and his pocket presence when he's not getting pressure right in his face.
 
Matter of fact, I want to see the reigns given to Mallett from game one. I don't care if we don't have as full of a play book and game plan.

What's comedic is you selling Belichick as too savvy to cut a friend a deal on the one hand and on the other basically calling him a sucker for having drafted Mallett in the first place. On talent Mallett was a first rounder and his stock dropped on the drug story. He wasn't over-drafted.

This is exactly where I'm at.

I think Mallett gives us the best chance to win. If I'm right about that, I can't see how OB doesn't start him with a minimized playbook.

The concepts are the same.

I was wrong about the verbiage; it's more different than I thought. But with OB and Godsey there, they should be able to get him up to speed at least on the plays in the gameplan if not the whole playbook. At least, I'm hoping so.

If so, now that the league has had several years to check him out, how come the most the Pats got for him was a 7th round pick ? A 2016 7th round pick ? No, he was absolutely over-drafted.
Now the opposite ( being under-drafted) would be one Matt Schaub who was taken in the 3rd round by the Falcons who got two 2nd round picks when they traded him after he was a backup in ATL for several years.

I take a point of view that the jury is still out on Dimitroff. I believe the Falcons terrible season last year may be a direct result of the Dimitroff trade to draft Julio Jones and the enormous amount of value he gave up to make it happen. Some argue that loss value has come back to bite him in the butt. Right now there are some who are predicting the Falcons will again finish last in their division. If that happens I suspect Arthur Blank would have Thomas on a very short leash.

Another factor/negative against Dimitroff is he tried to trade up with JAX at #3 to draft Jake Matthews. They had a done deal until the night before the draft when JAX reneged and said the Jags are staying put. As it turned out Falcons still got Matthews at #6. Surely Blank noted that Dimitroff had pulled the trigger giving up precious draft picks when there was no need to. Especially in light of the Julio trade that has almost been universally condemned as a bad trade for Atlanta. IMO that leash is shorter and tighter and Blank is not so much gung ho mood but in a wait and see mode.

Well, think about this: the Patriots could have gotten a first round pick in a multi-team deal with the Bucs, Lions and Broncos, but yet Belichick made a trade with his former vice president of player personnel, Pioli,

So, you tell me, why is it so funny to you when history reveals clear precedence for this sort of thing?
 
OB on what Mallett has improved since he worked w/him in NE: His knowledge of our offense and his accuracy. Plus, "he's 3 years older."
