Official TexansTalk NFL 2010 Mock Draft

Marshall Newhouse, Mike Johnson, or Mitch Petrus any of which would be great but Newhouse is faster and much more mobile and would seem to be a better fit in the ZBS.

Not advocating drafting him, but just wanted to point out that Gerhart is still on the board.

I hear a lot of people suggesting he will be drafted in the 2nd round, and that we should draft him with our 2nd pick. I think this mock shows that he should be available in the 3rd. There are just alot better players than him in this draft.

Eh, we are not real GMs. I would be ecstatic if Gerhart is available in the 2nd, but I really dont see it.

Hou Tex must be gone for the weekend.

The OG's seem to have the most value at this point. The good DT prospects seem to be gone and the FS prospects aren't as good as the OG prospects at this points.

I think there is a good consensus that Mike Johnson is the pick here if Hou-Tex misses his deadline.

I think Mike Johnson will be a very good OG but Marshall Newhouse seems to fit the ZBS better. Go check out their stats from the combine Newhouse is faster and more agile which Kubiak seems to like.

We are not rushing the Texans pick. Houtex can just make the pick Monday morning if he doesnt check in today.

Give me Newhouse,

If Caldwell couldn't beat out White and Caldwell was a 3 yr starter what makes you think Johnson can. Plus Johnson didn't show the athletism at the combine to be a fit in the ZBS. IMHO

Petrus would be a better fit in the ZBS than Johnson. IMHO

As far as I understood it keeps running through the weekend. He could have PMed his picks ahead if he was going to miss it on the weekend.

I'm with Super Mario on this.

The Texans' pick is the only really important one here and it's on HouTex to make it. I don't want this one to be a group pick.

One of the biggest things when looking at the OG's for me is where they're projected to play. In my opinion we don't need just an OG because he's rated highly... we need a LEFT GUARD. We need a guy that is going to beat out KASEY STUDDARD. For RG we've got Brisiel and Caldwell battling it out. It will be interesting to see where the new guy Smith ends up.

I can't speak for Newhouse, those more familiar please chime in on where he might fit. I was a big advocate of trading a late rd pick to Denver for Chris Kuper. But from what I'm reading, his ideal fit is at RG and I don't automatically assume a player is going to transition to LG with no problem.

Here's what Drew Boylhart says about Mike Johnson and why he's got my interest:
STRENGTHS
Mike is a smart, talented left guard who has the athletic talent to play more than one position on the offensive line. He is quick enough off the snap when blocking for the running game. Mike has good balance and quick feet that get him out to the second level for a screen or to take LB's out. He shows very good lateral agility when pass blocking and is strong enough to handle the bull rush. He's also quick enough to adjust his blocking assignment to handle any stunts thrown at him. Mike shows good mental stamina to be an excellent left guard in the NFL and looks to me on film that he could play Left Tackle, Right Tackle and either guard position.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Mike will need to go to the combine and prove through agility drills that he can play the left tackle position. If he can do that, he will shoot up the charts faster than a teenage boy turning off his computer to hide his porno sites from mom who's knocking on the bedroom door.

BOTTOM LINE
Mike is a starting left guard right now. He should be able to start for the team that drafts him at that position the day after you the draft. That means he has first round talent. What will dictate at what point in the draft Mike will fall will depend if he can play left tackle. Most of the time, players like Mike get drafted in the second or third round but the need for "ready to play" offensive lineman is so great in the NFL that I would not be surprised at all if Mike is drafted in the first round by a playoff team needing good offensive linemen. If Mike proves that he can play the left tackle position, he could move up into the top fifteen in this draft, so keep track of Rob's value board for this kid. No matter where he's picked, Mike is ready to plug in to your offensive line and play at a high level right away. Mike has pro bowl potential at a few different offensive line positions, which, for me, makes him a player I believe smart teams will be dying to draft early. I call him Mike (Incognito) Johnson because right now he is playing his position at a very high level and nobody seems to notice.

This also brings up something I've been thinking about. For 1st round Guards, we're looking at Mike Iupati if Kubiak/Dennison like him for our team. I'd love that but I question how NFL ready he is... seems to be raw.

What about Charles Brown from USC? He's a LT but from what I've been reading, if he doesn't make it at LT, if he isn't quick enough in the pros, he could be a pro bowl calibre RT or LG. What do yall think about drafting guy like that in the 1st... probably try and trade down in the 20's a little way? Sounds to be really versatilem, could be our LG out of the gates and a great backup LT/RT if one of those guys gets injured. Thoughts?

Newhouse was a 4 yr starter at LT for TCU.

Surely he can play LG and is the better athlete of the 2.

Not saying that Johnson would be a bad pick though.

Man this draft is deep.

I like this line of thinking.

BTW The Texans interviewed Bruce Campbell at the combine. So they may be thinking the same thing you are.

Fix the OL and draft a RB would be drafting to fix what Kubes said was job one this offseaso. Improving the running game.

Any chance we may draft an offensive tackle and shift guys around on our offensive line? Duane Brown playing guard or Eric Winston moving to guard and the Texans drafting a right tackle?

Just wondering...

Shouldn't the rules of the draft apply to all equally though. SuperMario's pick was 19 hours ago. Like Kiwitexansfan mentioned Hou-Tex could have PM'd his list to SuperMario or Texans4Ever like all the rest of us.

I think the best picks for the Texans in order are:

Marshall Newhouse-OG, great fit for the ZBS
Mitch Petrus-OG, good fit for the ZBS
Mike Johnson-OG, good OG but I don't think he's quick enough for the ZBS.

That's a good idea in the 1st round but not the 3rd, all the good OT's are gone but the really good OG's are still on the board.

What I'm saying is... no.

For me, at least, this isn't an exercise where I'm trying to be totally "fair" or trying to minimize the time spent on it. The players the Texans get are the most important thing. The mock is important to me because I get a better feel for which players are going to be drafted and a feeling for where. But it's really all about finding out what players may be falling to the Texans.

So, to me, this isn't like a game where there are rules that must be followed. It's more like a casual intellectual exercise.

Then you don't get a realistic feel for the Texans draft if the rules don't apply equally to everyone. There are 31 other members here who'd like to make their picks but they can't because we might be waiting for days for Hou-Tex to make his. It's not fair to the other members making picks if this thing is weighted in favor of the Texans. The real draft has time limits and rules that apply to everyone. How long are you willing to wait til Hou-Tex makes his pick?

It's now been 21 hours.....

Woah, guess it's time for a group pick, as far as I remember HOU-TEX hasn't PM'd me yet.

#1. This isnt a real draft. This is a Mock Draft.

#2. This is a Houston Texans forum. If that doesnt weigh in favor of the Texans, then I dont know what does.

#3. I am pretty sure he will be on tomorrow morning to make the pick. If that is not the case then I am fine with making a group pick.

Looks like Cleveland will still land Colt McCoy with their 2nd third round pick.

That would give them...

Earl Thomas
Patrick Robinson
Jahvid Best
Colt McCoy

That would be a solid draft by itself.

Given they are talking about McCoy in the second in real life, I think they'd be stoked.

constructive criticism: next time there needs to be a few edits to make this run a little smoother.

1. Like in the real draft if you miss you pick, the next team goes ahead.

2. If you miss your pick by more than say 2 hours, then a consensus of say 4-6 GMs make the decision.

3. No special rules for the person running the Texans. We have rules that state 6 hours per pick to keep the flow going and keep people motivated to keep participating. It has now been over 22 hours. since the Texans have been on the clock. That is far too much time in my mind.

Other players on my board that I really wanted: J.D. Walton C Baylor, Morgan Burnett FS Ga. Tech

Thanks.

I really wanted JD Walton. The dude plays with a nasty streak and attitude.

We'll see what we've got to work with in the 3rd.

OK, there it is. Hou-Tex himself telling us who he wants. If you have to pick for him, use his pick at least.

edit: I think he would be running to the podium with his card in hand for this pick.

It has been 24 hours, ie a full day that he has been on the clock. I do not think "running to the clock" is the best terminology, perhaps pinkie pushup-ing his way to the podium is more approp :)

Just got back from watching Baylor blow a chance at the final 4.

Wolf 6151 you won me over Hou tex has had plenty of time to make his pick. I think Tex4ever agrees. We should make the pick.

Damn, you are correct. I totally missed that. Burnett is also gone. Any other FS he might consider?
FS
Major Wright,Myron Lewis,Donovan Warren,Reshad Jones

OG
Newhouse,Johnson,Petrus,

OT that could shift inside to OG

Jason Fox,Selvish Capers

That should be a good list to go by.

We've got:

FS - Reshad Jones and Major Wright
OG - Mike Johnson and Marshall Newhouse
OC - I don't think anyone fits at this spot, shoot for Byers in the 4th
DT - Arthur Jones (just coming off of injury, probably too early) or Torrell Troup?

If we go BPA, maybe:

Dexter McCluster, WR
Mardy Gilyard, WR
Chris Cook, CB
Donovan Warren, CB

I left out Chris Cook, he would be a great choice in the 3rd rd. IMHO

Are you for going ahead and making the pick?

Not really. But if there's a consensus that we should do it, I'll take part.

The problem with the Chris Cook pick is that we've already got Kyle Wilson in this mock. And then Glover and Brice from last year. And Jacques and Antwaun and Fred. I think Chris is a good pick at this spot but just not with what we've done before. I threw him in there because... he's up near the top of my board at this point and he has to be considered.

Yeah, but Cook is big enough to play S too.

Having a S that can cover the TE or slot without having to change personel is invaluable.

This is why I believe Thomas will be gone before 20.

I copied and pasted the following post #487 from page 25 when I commented on the great pick that Hou-Tex made on Ben Tate in the 2nd round. Hou-Tex response is the last sentence. I think he fully intended to take the best OG available in the 3rd round and the best one's we've mentioned are all still available. I think our vote comes down to 3 guys:

Marshall Newhouse
Mitch Petrus
Mike Johnson

I personally like Newhouse and he gets my vote since he's the best available for the ZBS, but I don't think we could go wrong with any of them.

Interior O-line in the 3rd to make holes for the new running game Mike Johnson, Marshall Newhouse, or Mitch Petrus would be good, you already know about J.D.Walton and Matt Tennant wouldn't be bad either though a little early for him.

Yeppers, just gotta wait and see what I've got to work with. I might just go BPA if my C/G's fall off the board.

Isn't this thing shut down for the night now anyway? HOU-TEX did say before that he doesn't come on here on the weekends. It doesn't really bother me either way, I don't have a team to pick for.
