7 if you count Prosch... I guess they really need Akeem Hunt's skillset and he's injured? They kept Todman and he didn't do anything Bruce Ellington esque at a position of need. But Hunt and Blue are injured so... not the way i'd go.

Maybe they'll cut one of them for a guy they like from another team's cuts? Definitely after Strong returns from suspension week 1.

The only way I can explain it is that some stupid fools are making the decisions. It was a big mistake to cut Weeden (the logical backup QB) and a mistake to cut Williams and keep Hunt. When they cut Weeden they must have expected to sign another QB from somebody's practice squad. If they can get Peterman, I'll agree, but that move could have waited.

Either planning to run the wishbone or with the exception of Blue, we probably have one of the fastest RB group in the NFL.

Maybe with the weak OL, the plan is to spread the defense and get these quick RBs into space. Do what other teams have been doing to us for the past couple of years.

Surprised we kept Dunn on DL. I thought there were several other guys that looked better. Todman is probably only on the squad until Hunt gets healthy.

I think they really like Dunn and Todman is being looked at mostly as a ST guy I believe

Also with Tom Savage's injury past it makes me really nervous to carry only two QBs. If he goes down (let's say Savage tears his ACL during Week 1 against the Jaguars), all of a sudden Deshsun Watson is starting and then what? Shane Lechlar as a backup QB? Brian Cushing as a third-string emergency QB? We would likely sign Weeden again at that point or any available free agent quarterbacks?
 
In fact, Shane Lechler is our punter and third QB right now. At 41 years old he would be older than Tom Brady if he saw any action at quarterback this season.

I have a right to be concerned with the Houston Texans quarterback situation. Usually I'm a positive guy but I can't be in this situation. Bill O'Brien hasn't gotten the position right since he's been here. I also don't trust his playcalling.

I was a big Gary Kubiak fan (also a big Wade Phillips fan) and very high on the Texans trying to sign Peyton Manning back when he was a free agent and his Indy days were over. Had we done what I wanted them to do we'd likely have won a Super Bowl or two, instead of the Broncos.

The past is over. I just don't trust Bob McNair or Rick Smith. We've had so many talented teams over the years but all we have to show for it is an 0-3 divisional round record in the playoffs. Three wild-card wins. Is that our ceiling?

I'm very positive and excited about the Astros and Rockets...
But the Texans don't breed that type of joy for me anymore.
We've had chances to build something special but blew it.

The reason Peyton was not signed and we did not win a Super Bowl was not Tick or Bob it was your boy Kubiaggy
 
I will say this though. I'm very excited and hopeful for the Deshaun Watson era once it begins. I want it to start as soon as possible. I don't think our makeshift O-Line, minus All-Pro left tackle Duane Brown, is as bad as our 2002 expansion team's O-Line was.

Watson wouldn't be killed every other passing play like a rookie David Carr was. I've seen people compare it to that but it's far from it. We have much better offensive talent overall. Watson is actually good at making big plays out of broken plays under duress inside the pocket. He can escape the pocket and make plays with his arm or legs. Plays that Tom "the statue" Savage would be sacked, Watson will not be sacked. Deshaun Watson may mask Bill O'Brien's underwhelming playcalling which will feature running the ball a lot anyways.

Then again it made Matt Flynn a very rich man!

Tom Savage = 4th year in the NFL. 0 career TD passes. Our front office had more faith in Brock Osweiler going into last year! If Savage were any good we wouldn't have overpaid for Big Os in the first place.

The bigger the game the better Watson plays.
That's even been the case during his collegiate career.
 
Also go back and watch the film closely.
Look at how many sacks Watson avoided.
Not that it matters being the preseason but still...

A few of them he made positive plays out of.
The O-Line play (backups) was absolutely dreadful as well.
Put Savage with our backup O-Line and he's sacked 9 or 10 times!

Savage played with the first-team offense.
One of those two sacks was a coverage sack.
Dude held onto the ball way too long inside the pocket!!!

Watson was running for his life for the most part.
I want to see Watson have more first-team reps.

I last played Right Tackls in college at Sam Houston State years ago.
I'm probably better than the Texans backup OTs. LOL (joke)

I'm not gonna debate you..let's wait and see how Savage plays before we anoint Watson. I like him but Savage based on what we have seen fits what OBrien wants. We need to see both with full compliment of #1s against #1 opponents.

Fair enough. Like I said I'm willing to cheer for Tom Savage and I'll support him entering this season. But this is a make or break year for him. He's a free agent to be next off-season.

His four-year rookie deal is already entering a contract year. So if he fails miserably or gets hurt, yet again, I honestly wouldn't re-sign him after the 2017 season ends unless he becomes a Jason Garrett type player (career backup and bookworm on the field). Deshaun Watson is clearly our future franchise quarterback. We invested way too much to land him.

Otherwise we may be in for a 5-11 or 4-12 season.
Our defense, by itself, can likely win four or five games.
With average QB play we're likely AFC South champions again.

100% agree. If Savage has very good year he plays and gets big money..somewhere. Bad season and it is low ball avg guy contract elsewhere but not Houston. I will be drafting a QB 2018 regardless.

Yes, Prosch should be on there instead of Strong who doesn't count against the 53 for being suspended.

So somebody gets cut when Strong comes back, somebody gets cut when Brown comes back.

There's a discrepancy somewhere because heath is still listed on the roster which has 53 players. He's not on the position list which also has 53. Someone is there who shouldn't be.
 
This is driving me nuts. Someone is listed on the position list that's not on the roster unless I miscounted and I cannot find who it is.

Figured it out...

Battle red blog's numbers are wrong. There are only 25 on offense, not 26.

Heath is on the roster so there is actually 25 on defense not 24.

Yeah...OL and WR were my biggest concerns and after the final cuts...they still are!!!!

A fly on the wall told me that as the OL lined up to go in and speak with RS and O'Brien they came up with a brilliant plan...since our play on the field was horrible lets talk our way onto the roster.

"X" was the test rat:

RS: Why should we keep you on the roster?
X: I know my time on the field was a bit of a let-down but let me tell you....I love Houston, I love the Texans, and I really...really...really...really promise to try a lot harder (A tear and a sniffle for effect while meekly looking at the floor)
RS: "X"...that's all I needed to hear. We love you too!
BO: Go Get'm tiger...oh, and send Allen in next. Gotta love his spirit!!!
RS: I'm feeling better already!

X (Outside): Huddle up guys...let me fill you in on the line of s--t I just fed them. Oh! And they're eating it up like that t--d was candy coated.
OL: Looks like we gettin paid after all!!!

Even if DB hauls his a-s back in before game one...he's going to be a non-factor for the next 4-6 weeks...since my guess, he's probably way out of football shape.

Oh, and it even gets better...of all the years, this is the year they decide it would be in the best interest of the team to go with 2 QB's (wink)....is this a stroke of pure brain genius or just a pure brain f--t???

Note to Bill O'Brien:

In regards to your playbook, you might as well tear out every page that doesn't have something to do with plays involved in executing the Hurry-Up / No-Huddle Offense just so the team stands some type of chance of keeping Savage on the field. If Watson is sent in to QB behind this OL, I'm going to give him about 2 maybe 3 games before he's knocked onto the IR List b/c he's got just enough escapeability to run for his life and eventually a defensive player will make sure he runs no more this season. Weeden will probably be at home or in a deer stand somewhere in Texas when the team calls him back in.

RS, I certainly hope you're looking long and hard at the talent you've assembled on the OL, then ask yourself if you've truly done enough to help this team win.

Having only two QBs on the roster is not uncommon in the NFL. In 2013, 14 teams in the NFL had only 2 QBs on the 53 man roster. Because BOB has enough confidence in Watson to make him the no. 2 QB, Weeden became expendable and his roster spot can be used for a player who will actually see the field. I hate to see Weeden gone, but I think it was the right decision. Talent on the field is better than talent on the roster that will (hopefully) never see the field. If we get to the third string QB, our season is likely over and it doesn't matter anyway.

Majority of the league going with just two quarterbacks

At a time when everyone agrees there aren’t nearly enough quarterbacks to go around, most of the NFL has decided to only bother with two at a time.

After initial cuts yesterday, 19 teams stuck with just two quarterbacks, though that’s going to change in the next few days.

For instance, the Broncos are about to go to three, as soon as Brock Osweiler’s transaction is processed and he joins Trevor Siemian and the injured Paxton Lynch. And the Rams (Dan Orlovsky) and Chargers (Kellen Clemens) are expected to bring a third quarterback back in soon as well.

There are at least two teams carrying injured quarterbacks on their initial 53 who will likely go on the injured reserve/designated for return list later today (Cincinnati’s Jeff Driskel and Tampa Bay’s Ryan Griffin), and they’ll join the list of teams keeping a pair.

The Vikings will likely go back to three at some point after or if Teddy Bridgewater returns from the physically unable to perform list at some point after the first six weeks.

And then there are the poor Colts, who have four on the roster at the moment, and they may hang a banner for having the most quarterbacks of any team in the league since they hang them for everything else. [:spit:]

This list will continue to evolve over the next few days, but at the moment, here’s a division-by-division look at the quarterback depth charts:

Because BOB has enough confidence in Watson to make him the no. 2 QB, Weeden became expendable and his roster spot can be used for a player who will actually see the field. I hate to see Weeden gone, but I think it was the right decision. Talent on the field is better than talent on the roster that will (hopefully) never see the field. If we get to the third string QB, our season is likely over and it doesn't matter anyway.

I agree with the bolded part. But given the Texans history, we'll end up with a QB on the team that isn't on it now, and for any number of reasons. I don't see any way that the Texans go through this entire season without bringing on another QB at some point.
