Nico Collins is a legit WR 1

From the article linked:

"Nico Collins has some of the best hands in the entire NFL and has never dropped a pass in his NFL career."

I agree that Collins has done a good job catching balls that are catchable. He only has 2 drops in 2 years. But, I don't see a lot of tough catches, either. Nico is no Nuke. But, I'm OK with making the catches you're supposed to make. That extends drives, leading to scores. But you have to do it every game. Be consistent. Post. The most important ability is availability. If Collins can do that, we can have the conversation of whether he's a #1, #2, or #3.

A line from the article that caught my attention “Players such as Braxton Miller, DeVier Posey, Jacoby Jones, and Jabar Gaffney” this is exactly why I’ll believe it when I see it from Nico.

That said, he’s had awful QB play, awful scheming, loads of WRs take till their 3rd season to be any good. Here’s hoping!

I didn’t read the article but as you have said in the past-

Be on the field playing and rest will solve itself.

Gotta stay healthy. Would be nice if he does become the number 1 receiver. He will have to handle his business or he’ll be on the train smoking out of Houston.

None of it relates to that past anymore thankfully, but understand scaring it’s not easily forgotten. Regardless, Slowick will spread touches around, multiplicity. Be nice to create Metchie/Dell rub routes and keep defense from plugging running lanes. Nico sure looks like he will fill big play, X WR role.

Toro Times is junk. Every piece I've ever read is total Marc V style straight-up propaganda.

According to this rag, every player the Texans have ever signed or drafted is an all-pro.

I'm not sure who writes it, but it's not worth wiping your butt with. It's completely useless imho.

I stopped reading it when I realized there was no objectivity to it.

I would be relatively entertained by someone trying to wipe their butt with their phone or a laptop..

I’d love to see it. In terms of physical measurables he “fits the profile”.

6’4” 215 34 1/8” arms 4.45 40. He’s got the physical traits to be an alpha for sure.

He certainly hasn’t had the best offenses to showcase his talents. Between the Michigan Shea Patterson led offenses and Texans, it’s not like he was playing with QBs that could consistently get him the ball. If Stroud is who the team needs him to be… he’ll consistently get Collins the ball.

Contrast him to a similar player, Tee Higgins, who has had elite QB play in both college and the NFL.

If Collins gets Tee Higgins production now that he has solid QB play and hopefully a well-coached offensive system i’d be very happy.

Higgins last season:

74 rec 1029 yards 7 tds

I’d be happy if Collins could produce like that. I think he has it in him. But he’s gotta be available to show it.

By #1 receiver are we talking 80+ catches, 1,200+ yards or just that he'll lead the team in targets, yards and catches? 'Cause, sorry, I'm gonna have to see it first to buy the former.
I’m not suggesting that’s not even necessary, just feed him the ball. So many more options available that it will spread around. Better way to measure him would be yards per catch and yards after contact.

it’s good not having a clear #1. Makes practice more competitive and we will see who’s the hungriest. One things for sure, 1 of these guys will breakout, too much talent

The Niners were successful on offense the last two years by running the ball.

They ranked 29th and 26th in pass attempts.

Last year, their no. 1 receiver Brandon Ayuk (first round draft pick in 2020) totalled 78 catches for 1.015 yds.

The TE, Kittle was second with 60-765

Samuel was third with 56-631

With our depth (including the RBs), I don't expect any of the receivers to surpass Ayuk's number, unless a couple of the weapons get limited due to injury or some unforseen reasons.

Looks like a fantasy nugget for Pierce

I think the design of the offense and the talents of the players the Texans have will dictate that there will not be a number 1 WR like fans are thinking about with Andre Johnson...nor is one needed for the passing game to be effective.

Where? Outside of MAYBE Metchie and MAYBE Nico, it’s has beens or maybes. There’s not a whole lot to hang your hat on in the WR room. They don’t have a legit #1 option on the roster.

He just needs a QB to get him the ball and the rest will take care of itself. Look at film of Nico, kid has speed and hands. Not to mention the ability to win jump balls and he runs good routes. He needs a bit more polish on them to make them great

Is a year with a accurate? Quarterback will show us what we have in Collins. It would be great if we could remove wide receiver as a need in 2024 draft.

I tend to have a much higher opinion of Nico then the average Texans fan I guess. Doesn't matter if he can't stay on the field though. This is a make / break it year for him. He has every chance to become "the guy" this year. Follow through and live up to your promise young man.

I'm in more of a "show me what you've got" mindset. When someone gets drafted, my hopes are high, but as time goes on, those hopes fade. Nico has at least been better than Devier Posey or Keshawn Martin, but he's still lurking in the background as a semi-Jabar Gaffney receiver. He's got to step up big time just to be a legitimate #2 receiver for me, so I'm not going to expect him to rise up to #1 status. If he does, that would be awesome, but I'm not expecting it.

I like Collins and remember watching him in college as well. Big, fast, strong WR.
I think anyone would take Higgins numbers and say that would work, but you have to remember that Higgins is the #2 WR in our system and got 109 targets his way. He's a #1 on many other teams in the league. I can't see Stroud throwing the ball so much that Collins comes close to those numbers. While Collins made good on his opportunities last year, he only saw 66 targets. Hopefully having Stroud helps that, but again, that's a lot of passing for the rookie. Burrow had over 600 attempts last year, which was 5th in the league.

I think Nico is going to be very good if he stays healthy. Also, don't sleep on Xavier Hutchinson. I have been watching film, scouting reports and just a few highlights to see his really great plays all at once. And I can say that he looks very very good. True his level of competition is not as high as say SEC, ACC and Big 10 to name 3. However, he has very good separation moves, isn't afraid to hand fight or block, has ideal height, weight and speed. He had a 2nd round grade by many draft guides. I think either of them could be a true WR 1 if healthy and with a good QB. Hutchinson caught 98% of passes thrown to him with only a 4.3% drop average. On that 5% is considered about average and when you get to 7% or so then it becomes a concern. I think our staff will lower the 4.3 from college even more. These 2 could be very good, and on the feild (and healthy) at the same time could cause some problems for slower and/or slower DBs.

Are Collins, Hutch on the level of WR1's like Adams, Chase, Hill, Diggs? If not then you don't have a WR1

Devonte Adams = Rodgers/Carr
Ja'Marr Chase = Burrow
Stefon Diggs = Cousins/Allen
Tyreek Hill = Mahomes/Tua

Yep, not a Davis Mills type or Pep Hamilton system on the list...

Not saying that ANY receiver on the Texans current roster is a WR1. Saying that your comparison is flawed.

Diggs, Jefferson played with Cousins which I consider very comparable to Stroud

No excuses

I wouldn't call anyone on the Texans roster a #1 WR yet.
We will have to see what happens in camp etc. to see if anyone breaks out and has good chemistry with Stroud.

Maybe Collins breaks out, maybe Hutchison also, but I can't say anyone is really poised at this moment.

I'm trying feel all warm and fuzzy for the '23 season, but I'm having a difficult time being confident in a rookie OC/play caller and, potentially, a rookie QB under center. I expect some hiccups and rookie mistakes by both.
I'm looking forward to the '24 season, with both the OC and the QB being more experienced.
I honestly hope the Texans start the season, for at least the first few games, with either Keenum or Mills under the season, unless Stroud just blows the coaching staff away and is 110% hands down the better option.
Even if he does blow the coaching staff away, let him watch an NFL or two from the sidelines to see what it's really like. Stroud won't get that in pre-season games.

If Stroud is better than Mills he should start

If Stroud isn't better than the 32nd ranked QB then there's bigger issues.

Sounds reasonable. Good to see you're not making excuses for these clowns. Keeping it real.

Respect

A.J Brown, D.K Metcalf, Hunter Renfrow, Courtland Sutton, Chris Godwin, Michael Thomas, Stephon Diggs, Erick Decker, etc

What’s the common theme between these receivers? They weren’t looked at as #1’s and weren’t drafted in the 1st round. I get it. We haven’t had much success drafting wr’s in later rounds but sooner or later you get lucky and draft a pre-CTE Antonio Brown or Emmanuel Sanders. Rookies can become #1 during there rookie season. I expect with Cj dropping accurate dimes while having good intuition, we will have a #1 by week 9. Hutchinson shouldn’t have fell that far. Regardless, one of these guys will break out and maybe 2, just have to wait and see

so Texans advertising: "hey fans after mid-season, we just might have a WR1?

I fully expect Stroud to be vastly better than Mills or Keenum, I just don't expect it right away. Stroud is drinking from a firehose right now, trying to learn a new offense from a guy who's never ran an offense before. That's a pretty steep learning curve for both of them.
Why not let the rookie at least see a few regular season games from the sidelines before throwing him to the wolves? That would give the OL a bit of time to gel, since there should be at least 2 new starters, including a rookie C. Let Mills or Keenum take the pounding while the OL gels instead of the rookie? I don't expect to see 2002 David Carr level of poundings, but I do expect to see the normal growing pains along the OL.

Xavier and Nico have all the ability. Nico didn't stay healthy or have a good QB. And of course it is Xaviers rookie season. I really think our WR group is better than anyone is giving us credit for. Basically in Nico and Xavier we have to taller, heavier WRs who show good speed, awareness and hands. 2 potential difference makers, our true slot guys Dell and if he is ok Metchie. And then we have other players who have shown ability. And Woods no question is the senior WR and locker room leader.

I will try to find the article I read that showed just why our WRs cout be the sleeper group of the NFL

I dont think that he's going to take a pounding behind the OL. They will run the ball a lot and only throw the ball about 30 times per game at most. They can run the offense like Kubiak did with Schaub and not allow Stroud to audible out of plays. In short dumb down the offense for Stroud. They need to play the QB that gives them the best chance to win. No excuses.

Why don't you just put that in your signature? We get it.
Dont know how, I just dont want this to become another Derrick situation, where Stroud can do know wrong and if anything goes wrong it's on Ryans/Slowik etc...

If I was going to put anything in my sig it would be A-Holes are going to be A-Holes.

No excuses., if you want to put this in my sig feel free to do so.
