NFL Random Thought of the Day

Your going to have up to 5 WR's on the field at the same time. Having 2 promising (1 coming off broken leg, the other with just 1 relatively healthy season) is not near enough. Mayer was selected with pick 35 just the year before. If he was all that as steelb claims, Raiders wouldn't have passed on highly regarded OL and CB to take another TE @ 13. Bowers was not the only top talent available. Look at it without hindsight. They obviously did not the Mayer was the long term answer
I’d say teams go 2 TE moreso than 4-5 WRs. 3 WRs sure depending on the team.

New coaching staff also played a role in Mayer’s standing. And does again. 3rd OC in 3 seasons for Raiders.

Looking at where Raiders slotted without hindsight Bowers was BPA and a weapon. As an offensive weapon he slotted in behind Harrison and Nabers last season imo.

Some teams go BPA (Bowers) other pass on BPA (BTJ/McConkey)

I would say Bowers was the best non QB player in last yrs draft. He's better than Bowers so Bowers went to the bench. Bowers had a historic rookie season and Telesco made a great pick.

Nope, I loved Bowers, I said at the time he was a rare difference maker. Although I didn't believe he would be this good. I didn't mention much about him, because I knew there wasn't a chance he would be there when the Texans picked. When he was at Georgia he was the best player on the field and with the talent on those Georgia teams, (teams in the SEC) that says a lot.

Yes I liked Bowers too, but this was about Mayer

You haven't explained how 27 catches for 304 yards and 2TD is an excellent year
Who had 27 catches and 304 yds. McConkey? was injured, but when he was healthy he was a playmaker. The combine showed how athletic he was and the Sr. Bowl showed what a great route runner he is. BTJ/Bowers it was obvious they were studs and sure fire 1st rd picks. I said BTJ was on par with Nabers before last yrs draft and wanted Caserio to pick him. I will stand by that eval. Both are game changing WR1's.

Mayer was solid, the Raiders passing game wasn't good and Adams got most of the targets. Mayer will do about what Schultz does in the passing game and probably be the best blocking TE the Texans have had since their inception. Not that this is saying much. He's still got 2 yrs on his rookie deal which is a plus.

No, that was Mayer's so called 'outstanding' rookie season

That was his rookie season and like the Texans, he spent most of his time blocking/helping out the Raiders OL. How many rookie TE's make an impact in their rookie yrs? Last yr he didn't play much because of Bowers. Sometimes numbers lie, there's alot more to playing the TE position than just receiving. Want to improve the Texans run game which in turn will help Stroud and the passing game? Draft Jackson and trade for Mayer. Mayer isn't a deep threat but as a receiver he's on a Kmet/Henry/Kincaid level as a TE. IMHO

OK, but the Texans have to go off their own evaluations. Not really concerned about a front office that was axed decisions.

If the FO decides to go for Mayer fine, but he's not the can't miss give up a 4th and more that you have been touting. Slow your roll is all I'm saying

What 4th rd starter level/upgrade player are you plan on drafting in the 4th rd? Also there's not another TE that's a starter level next yr guy that you're going to draft at 4-115. Not saying he's the best TE in the NFL, but he would be the best blocking TE on the team and he's not a bad receiver. Would you trade 4-115 for Kmet with 2 yrs left on his rookie deal?

A lot of people (rightfully so) wanted the Texans to take a WR with their first round pick in last year’s draft due to the strength of the class. Despite already having two promising WRs on the roster in Nico/Tank.

Bowers was the best offensive player at Georgia winning two national titles there… and he was the first player to win the John Mackey award back to back seasons as the nation’s top TE… and he fell to pick 13. Value is just too good to pass up sometimes.
I wanted Thomas Jr because he can run by people, he's 6'4, and he's young. He would allow you to to have Nico replacement already in the roster in 4 yrs while providing something they haven't had. Not only that, Tank would be attacking your 3rd cb. Teams would be forced to play 2 high, which they even did this year. Instead, they did the Diggs deal, gave up a 2nd and took a 16m dead cap charge and are back in the same position.

I just read that Mayer missed 6 games last year due to personal reasons, not an injury.

The best information on Mayer to this point has come from Raider Nation Radio host Q Myers, who ruled out a few rumors that were going around about Mayer.

“In the Michael Mayer situation… it’s nothing to do with him wanting to trade or him in playing time or not getting enough targets. It truly is a personal situation. And from what my understanding is, what I’ve been told is that they didn’t know what was going on with Big Mike,” Myers said on the Locked on Raiders podcast.

“His family had to tell the team about a situation that apparently has occurred in his life before that has put him in a position where he’s in,” Myers continued. “And now that they know what it is, they feel like that they can get to a resolution of it. So, I don’t know exactly what that means. That’s the way that it was worded to me.”

A 4th round pick is not a “can’t miss” price. It’s just like the 4th round you would use on a prospect who has warts.

If a player is up for trade, of course that means there’s warts. But good front offices buy low on players then sell high. The Eagles just did it with Baun and Bechton.

Steel and I agree that Mayer is a “buy low” candidate.

I wouldn't count on Tank attacking any CB.

SEATTLE -- The Seahawks on Tuesday announced the releases of outside linebacker Dre'Mont Jones, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris, safety Rayshawn Jenkins and offensive tackle George Fant -- anticipated moves that combine to save the team roughly $27 million in cap space.

And that may only be the start of their pre-free-agency salary purge, with signs pointing to wide receiver Tyler Lockett likely being released later this week barring an unexpected restructure of his contract.

Obviously bad wording on my part. SteelB has give me the impression that he thinks Mayer is the cure-all of all ills that have ever been at the TE position. I don't agree or he wouldn't be available for a 4th round pick

I wouldn’t go higher than a 5th for Mayer. There’s some talent there somewhere..lbut he has been trash in his first 2 years. Last year he had like 160 receiving yards, and year before only around 300. I’d take a flyer for a 5th but no higher.

Not a cure all, but he would be the best TE on the roster. I might even give up 3-89 for him. He would immediately be the 2nd best TE in Texans history behind OD, which says more about the Texans TE's than Mayer.

This happens when a guy is stuck behind Bowers, who had the greatest rookie receiving year of any TE in NFL history. Mayer is an excellent blocker.

He wasn't good in 2023 either, at least statistically. If he's a plus blocker, that's a feather in his cap. I also get that the QB situation is unstable there. He MAY end up being very good, but I think it's a crapshoot. He's proven nothing at the NFL level thus far, and so for me...it's a 5th at best. If Nicky gives up a 4...I would be slightly miffed but ok. A 3rd? Hell freaking no.

Bears are trading A 4th round pick for Joe Thuney. Hmmmm.
Right and I understand that's a '26 4th round pick, not this year ?
He isn't that much of a tackle, but as a guard, yea pretty sure he could start for us ?
But I dunno maybe they've decided to go with a younger player to uprade their interior OL.

Mayer hasn’t lived up to expectations in LV….Green hasn’t lived up to expectations here in Houston.

I’d take a shot at Mayer if the Raiders would be willing to swap underperforming players. With a total of 6 picks…..I wouldn’t use a RD5 pick on a crapshoot.

I've got a question for you and this probably should be in the draft section, tell me more about Shemar Turner, I keep going back and forth between who I would like the Texans to pick, Turner or Ty Robinson?
I really like Turner. He's a scheme adverse guy and he plays hard, very hard. He will get a after the whistle penalty from time to time., but he's nasty. He's a Desoto kid too.Thats why I kinda backed off Grant in the 1st when Turner is there in the 3rd. He's a nasty, nasty guy too

Chiefs' Xavier Worthy arrested in Texas on assault charge

To be even more clear, Assault family member impeding breath is the charge. There were likely visible markings around her neck. In court, this I believe is a 3rd degree felony if I remember correctly, punishable by 2-10 years in prison.
