NFL Random Thought of the Day

LAS VEGAS -- Toward the end of the first half of the Cleveland Browns' 16-20 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, cameras caught quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston chastising right tackle Dawand Jones after a blown block.

Jones allowed defensive end Tyree Wilson a free path to Watson on the third-down play, and he was hit as he launched a downfield pass to wide receiver Amari Cooper. The attempt fell incomplete to Cooper, who had broken free from cornerback Jack Jones.

Watson was seen yelling and clapping his hands at Jones immediately after the play, and Winston was held back by teammates on the sideline.

I can only imagine how Watson would react with the Texans Oline problems.

Attorney for women suing Brandon McManus says they have yet to meet with NFL
By Charean Williams
Published September 30, 2024 03:59 PM

Free agent kicker Brandon McManus faces a lawsuit from two flight attendants accusing him of sexual assault on a Jaguars charter. The NFL released a statement Monday saying it has found “insufficient evidence to support a finding that a violation of the personal conduct policy occurred.”

The attorney for the flight attendants, though, said they have yet to meet with NFL investigators.

“We are still working to schedule a meeting between the NFL’s investigators and our clients,” Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee said in a statement to Pro Football Talk. “The NFL hasn’t yet spoken with our clients, so I’m a bit confused as to why anyone could make any conclusions at this point.”

The NFL declined comment on whether the accusers cooperated.

Schefter has reported that an ACL rupture has not yet been confirmed....that tests continue.

There is no doubt that Reid has the diagnosis following the MRI which was run this morning. An ACL can almost always be diagnosed by physical exam.

The abdominal obliques have attachments to the hips and can cause hip pain............explaining how the injury was initially mistaken for a hip injury.

Here's another case of a player allowed to return to play in a game while injured and extending the injury.

"Considered day-to-day"????????? Even with injections, this is at least 3-4 week rest/rehab..................unless you're looking for a recurrent injury. And in a QB this core injury would certainly adversely affect his mechanics.

Report: Anthony Richardson day to day with abdominal, oblique injuries
By Charean Williams

Published September 30, 2024 06:00 PM

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson left Sunday’s game with what the team called a right hip injury. Coach Steve Steichen said Monday he did not think it was a “huge, huge injury” for Richardson.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that Richardson has oblique and abdominal strains and is considered day to day.
Richardson is not ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

He played only 14 snaps against the Steelers, initially injuring himself on a 14-yard run before returning for two plays and then leaving for good.

Richardson now has missed significant portions of three of the eight career games he has started.

He has completed only 50.6 percent of his passes for 654 yards with three touchdowns and a league-high six interceptions this season. Richardson also has run for 141 yards and a touchdown.

Now find out that beside a calf tear and Achilles tendonitis in one leg...................McCaffrey is suffering an Achilles tendonitis in BOTH legs! This is not good new since Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury. Once he is finally able to return, as a RB he is high risk for recurrence. This is not to even mention, with this set of conditions, significant risk for compensatory injuries are likely to follow him. I feel badly for this young elite RB.

McCaffrey?

Browns fan showing their class again

As Cincinnati's players were walking off the field at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, it appeared a drink was poured on Brown by someone in the stands at the conclusion of the Bengals' 34-24 victory.

"He's had it in both," Shanahan said. "I think it started in one, you overcompensate, it went to the other. Mainly one of them has just been bothering him, but he's had it in both."

McCaffrey is the perfect illustration of how players who try to play through a significant injury that requires rest/rehab commonly result in a compensatory injury.

Achilles tendonitis.. not sure I’ve heard that term very often. I know you said it’s an overuse/overcompensation injury so it certainly would seem it’s very common in the NFL yet it doesn’t seem to be so. Is rest the cure or is this degenerative for him? I also liked the guy and wished we could have drafted him.

To begin with, the term tendonitis is a misnomer. The suffix -itis means inflamed. For a structure to become truly inflamed, it requires a blood supply to bring the inflammatory response to the area. All tendons are what we call avascular, meaning they have no direct blood supply. I, like many of us who have treated this condition do not now refer to it as Achilles tendonitis but in fact is refer to it by "Achilles tendinosis" which is a degeneration of the tendon's collagen in response to chronic overuse.

This "injury" is not uncommon, especially in runners and the like with repetitive stress on the Achilles. As noted above, the tendon lacks a direct blood supply making it very difficult to heal any injury. Usually tendinosis starts very small, so that the damage is not felt initially. The player will then continue his activity, and the Achilles continues to degenerate over time. This condition is relatively easy and effective to treat when it first becomes symptomatic...............some short rest, pain medication, icing, massage and stretching exercises....................and this is why, although relatively common, you don't hear much about the issue. For whatever reasons, if the athlete and their medical staff ignore the need for quick short conservative treatment, the degeneration will accelerate and extend to a point the Achilles rupture becomes a significant possibility. What is unfortunate is that many treating the condition will unknowingly attack the pain inappropriately. While anti-inflammatory drugs like corticosteroids and NSAIDs are mainstays for treating tendinitis, these medications will actually contribute to and worsen tendinosis.

I hope this answers most of your questions.

Tua is now symptom-free. according to Adam Schefter, "so far to my knowledge, none of his consulting neurologists have said to him 'You can't do this.' "

The problem is that I doubt that most neurologists would tell Tua "can't." But they would certainly review the risks and strongly advise him to seriously consider a decision to return to football. I get the feeling that shortly I'm going to be watching the ultimate train wreck.

DW4 looks like Cam did in his last few years in Carolina after his big shoulder injury. That's not to excuse his dreadful play..He's been terrible. but the Browns and Jets organizations in particular have a unique talent and lengthy history of making their QB's look way worse than they actually are despite how much talent they have. I remember how Mayfield looked his last few years there...Almost the exact same scenario. Out there getting your ass kicked on a weekly basis while also being made the scapegoat for the teams' failures by the fans, media and in Mayfield's case, the organization. All the while you're trying to comeback/play thru injuries, **** coaching and most of all **** o-line play. Of course look at how Mayfield is playing now away from that dreadful organization. You thought our organization/leadership/foundation was bad here in Houston so you wanted out huh DW4? Cleveland said "hold my beer..". So on some level he had it coming for how he did us........Karma's a helluva thing.

He forced his way into getting a record contract despite being a perv at best and a sexual predator at worst. He's getting what he wanted and what he deserves at the same time.

He was clearly frustrated. He was consistently over/underthrown when he got open & he was open a lot.
No matter what the situation, how many of us would be getting away with ragging on our boss................especially in public..............and on camera for the whole world to see at that??

And he is going to receive more scrutiny in Cleveland than here in Houston. Houston media gave him a pass.

He's paying his penance for how he did us. So I'm not gonna say his end game in forcing his way out of here was to get that record contract b/c Cleveland didn't have to give it to him. All im gonna say is he got what he asked for..........& a whole lot more of what he didn't ask for & what he thought he was getting away from....Now he has a front row seat to a real dysfunctional organization.

The funny thing is, that situation is likely going to play out exactly how his last few years here played out. Stefanski & Brown will likely get fired after this season, but the Browns may not be able to hire a serious HC candidate b/c they know they'll be tethered to him...more specifically that contract........Unless Haslam does what that Denver group did with Wilson's contract and agrees to pay like 50-100 million of his contract just to land their coveted HC candidate............. & get him the hell outta there.

Ehh, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense...Flacco didn't return b/c he's 40 damn years old and he's a statue...& b/c they know that o-line would've gotten him killed eventually & DW4 would be right back under center anyway. Aside from that DW4's money is guaranteed so his butthurt feelings wouldn't matter at all...right about now, he'd probably welcome Flacco to play behind that trash o-line they have while he sits.

I dont see him dying from the concussions which is the ultimate trainwreck.

I definitely can see concussions shortening his lifespan, but that's his choice.

Flacco took them to the playoffs. It’s been said by multiple people, including on this board, Watson didn’t want Flacco back. He still looks good in Indy.

I don't know about that. I doubt he thought he was going to be able to escape the scrutiny of what his baggage brought him with any team. But like Kobe's situation, if he got somewhere and was able to win, he might've been able to get past it quicker. His dumbass chose the wrong organization to go to try and win though......Cleveland is allergic to winning anything lol.
