NFL Random Thought of the Day

PFT’s Week 2 2024 NFL power rankings

Published September 10, 2024 09:17 AM

1. Chiefs (last week No. 1; 1-0): It wasn’t easy. But when is it ever easy for the Chiefs?
2. Lions (No. 2; 1-0): The Lions are capable of suffocating most teams in the NFL.
3. 49ers (No. 4; 1-0): Yes, the 49ers are good enough to not have one of their best players and not miss a beat.
4. Ravens (No. 5; 0-1): Lamar Jackson won’t make it 17 games if he keeps absorbing — and delivering — hits like that.
5. Eagles (No. 6; 1-0): They need to get things going a little faster.
6. Buccaneers (No. 9; 1-0): Keep sleeping on them; they like it that way.
7. Bills (No. 8; 1-0): Josh Allen could be on the front end of an MVP year.
8. Texans (No. 10; 1-0): In his eighth year, Joe Mixon looks better than ever.
9. Dolphins (No. 11; 1-0): They had to dig deep to win. That will serve them well later in the year.
10. Packers (No. 3; 0-1): They need Jordan Love back, ASAFP.
11. Steelers (No. 15; 1-0): They don’t need a high-end offense to win, not with T.J. Watt around.
12. Cowboys (No. 19; 1-0): Better late than never to deal with some important contract issues. (It was still late.)
13. Bears (No. 13; 1-0): The regular season is very different from the preseason.
14. Bengals (No. 7; 0-1): They usually start slowly. This time, however, it felt different.
15. Rams (No. 17; 0-1): The Rams already have too many injuries, but they still nearly pulled off a huge upset.
16. Jets (No. 14; 0-1): Last year’s long strength was last night’s biggest weakness.
17. Browns (No. 12; 0-1): Most Browns fans would dump Deshaun Watson right now, if they could.
18. Chargers (No. 18; 1-0): J.K. Dobbins, when healthy, is one of the best running backs in the league.
19. Falcons (No. 16; 0-1): If any Falcons fans had bothered to show up on Sunday, they would have been chanting for Michael Penix Jr.
20. Jaguars (No. 20; 0-1): That’s the kind of loss that will get people fired (and not for embezzling more than $20 million).
21. Seahawks (No. 22; 1-0): Solid defense, good running game, good enough to get to 1-0.
22. Colts (No. 21; 0-1): They might not win many games, but they’ll be fun to watch this year.
23. Saints (No. 24; 1-0): They won’t be seeing the Panthers every week.
24. Vikings (No. 25; 1-0): It’s hard to tell whether the Vikings simply beat up on a bad team, or whether they have a chance to be good.
25. Patriots (No. 31; 1-0): Run the ball, play defense, win games.
26. Cardinals (No. 30; 0-1): They’re going to be better than expected.
27. Broncos (No. 23; 0-1): Bo Nix got a baptism by beastquake.
28. Titans (No. 26; 0-1): Blowing winnable games can make for a long, long season.
29. Commanders (No. 27; 0-1): Pro tip — don’t call designed quarterback runs the ball once the game is decided.
30. Raiders (No. 28; 0-1): At this rate, Davante Adams will want to dress up like a Jet for Halloween.
31. Giants (No. 29; 0-1): At this rate, Bill Belichick will be looking for houses in New Jersey by Thanksgiving.
32. Panthers (No. 32; 0-1): At this rate, David Tepper will be throwing drinks on himself by Columbus Day.

Popular Fox Sports host Nick Wright is one of those people. He was ready this week to write the history books on how the Browns controversial trade to acquire Watson will be remembered. From his perspective, it's already the worst transaction in the league's history.

"I think the Browns are in such – of their own doing – a terrible spot," Wright said during a conversation on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. "I don't think people understand what the cap situation is for them. They still owe him in cap dollars $173 million. They have $173 million in cap chargers owed to Deshaun Watson starting in next year. So he's unmoveable, uncuttable and he's unplayable. I think Jameis [Winston] gives them a better option. This is without question, the worst transaction in NFL history.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy ripped the Kansas City Chiefs' medical staff for a lack of urgency after he sustained an eye injury in Thursday's season opener, calling it "unacceptable" and "unprofessional."

"I was disappointed in the way the training staff of the Chiefs handled the situation," Van Noy said on his podcast Tuesday. "I was supposed to see an ophthalmologist ... and they took an entire quarter to get down to talk to me in the locker room -- which, to me, is unacceptable."
The Chiefs had no comment on Van Noy's remarks.

Van Noy suffered a fractured orbital bone in the third quarter while rushing Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The injury occurred when his helmet went under his chin strap while he was at the bottom of a pile that included Mahomes and Baltimore defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike.
The Ravens ruled out Van Noy about 40 minutes after he left the game with an eye injury. Van Noy described the injury as a "pretty good fracture."

"The way it took time was super unprofessional to me, especially because there were people in there, too," Van Noy said. "One of the doctors, or the friend of the doctor was in there double-cup fisted, styrofoam cups like everything was good and I just felt that was unprofessional."

Van Noy pointed out how the Chiefs received an "F" for their training staff in the most recent NFL Players Association report card.

"I understand how Kansas City, the players have given that training room an F," Van Noy said, "because with my experience, I would have probably gave them an F, too."

Tell that to Tony Gonzales. :)
I will but it's like telling a receiver who retires at a normal age (usually early to mid thirties) to tell it to Jerry Rice. To tell a RB he should play the volume of games as Frank Gore.

Judging people, especially first ballot Hall of Famers to longevity unicorns is a bizarre exercise.

It feels bizarre having to argue that a 35 year old winding down his career is a completely normal thing because I feel like that's an extremely reasonable take to make. Maybe it's just me.

There was a reason for my smiley.

There's nothing in the down by contact rules that says anything about a head first dive.

when a runner declares himself down by:

falling to the ground, or kneeling, and clearly making no immediate effort to advance.
sliding feet-first on the ground. When a runner slides feet-first, the ball is dead the instant he touches the ground with anything other than his hands or his feet.

Stroud wasn't falling to the ground, kneeling or sliding feet first. He was diving for the 1st down marker. A blown call.
Or cheating.

Here is an article from 2018 'NFL rules will now treat head-first dives like feet-first slides'. Here is an excerpt from the NFL rules
"when a runner declares himself down by:

(1)falling to the ground, or kneeling, and clearly making no immediate effort to advance.

(2) sliding. When a runner slides feet or head first, or simulates sliding the ball is dead the instant he touches the ground with anything other than his hands or his feet, or begins to simulate touching the ground;"

I guess it is all a judgement call. Nowhere in the rules do I see that it only applies to QBs and RBs dive forward almost every game. Anybody in their right mind would know Stroud was going for the first down not giving himself up.

Kelce could retire tomorrow and walk right into the HOF, I don't think he cares what Whitlock has to say. He is 34 (35 in a couple of weeks), Rob Gronkowski retired at 32.. Why didn't Jason compare him to Gronk? It's not really fair to compare anyone to Tony Gonzalez.. That guy obsessively took care of his body and what he put in it.. still does.
That comparison would have certainly been questionable....................Gronk's laundry list of injuries and surgeries is too long to list..............Gronk after his back injuries and surgeries could barely stand let alone play by the time he retired.

He's already had to undergo abdominal core sports hernia surgery in 2022. Once you start having core/abdominal/back problems.............if you can even continue, you're looking at a cascade of potential compensatory injuries.

Joey Bosa has limited practice with a back injury

Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa had a limited practice Wednesday with a back injury.

He has not had any injury luck the past two seasons, playing only 14 total games. Bosa made the last of his four Pro Bowls in 2021 when he had 10.5 sacks.

He broke his hand in an Aug. 4 joint practice with the Rams that required surgery to repair the fracture but played 40 of 60 snaps in the season opener.

Bosa had seven tackles, a sack and two quarterback sacks against the Raiders.
He has 67 sacks in his career.

Okay then Jason Witten..
Witten played an impressive 15 years already, he contemplated retirement. He retired at age 35 while still playing well..............and he wasn't battling injuries. But, he said that via Bill Parcells' saying, “If you’re thinking about when you might retire, it’s time to retire.” And he had been thinking about it prior to his decision. He unretired after a year and played for the Girls again, having a more limited role but maintaining a commendable catch percentage. He ended up going to the Raiders for his 17th NFL season. That team as a whole ended up a mess. Witten could not be used effectively because the whole team collapsed.

But as you have pointed out, the "age of descent" for TEs is in their 30s.

The Packers are still saying that Love might play..............that's BS.

But it's most likely that Malik Willis will start.................heaven help the Packers.

Myles Garret didn't look great last Sunday. He didn't practice today due to a "foot injury" reported as "nothing serious." If it has anything to do with a recurrence of his toe dislocation, it is not nothing serious.

Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell were going to be arrested, until Dolphins intervened

The Tyreek Hill incident from Sunday nearly had an even greater impact on the Dolphins’ Week 1 game.

Appearing Thursday on PFT Live, Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald said that the Miami-Dade police officers on the scene intended to arrest Hill and defensive linemen Calais Campbell. If they had been arrested, they would have missed the game.
Kelly said that the Dolphins intervened, defusing the situation and ensuring that Hill and Campbell would not be taken in for the booking, processing, and other activities that would have made them unavailable to play. As Kelly noted, it helps that the Dolphins are a major employer of off-duty Miami-Dade police officers.

Even without that extra sway, it was the right outcome. One officer in particular escalated the situation and pushed for both to be arrested.

that was one of the goofiest things I saw. Who gets arrested for dark tint? I'd sue if I were Hill.

Tyreek Hill should have been arrested. Anyone else would have been arrested.

I understand why Hill did it. He didn’t want fans or media spotting him getting pulled over. That said…he handled it very poorly. Cops need to see into the vehicle. That’s basic safety 101. Maybe if Hill had been more cooperative, he could have convinced them to allow him to raise the window when they weren’t directly speaking to him. Or maybe they would have allowed him to pull into the player lot. I think his attitude started the issue.

That does not excuse the officer who yanked him out of his seat and forced him to the ground. I haven’t seen any evidence he was violent or overly threatening. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Both sides have blame but that cop was highly unprofessional and should be sanctioned in some way. He’s a loose cannon.

agreed.

I understand their job is tough & dangerous & I was told & tell my kids you treat cops with respect & follow orders, but we can't let them get away with this kind of behavior. They're not the gestapo, we don't like gestapo tactics.

Tua sustained another severe concussion, after a 4th down run. After lowering his head to pick up the 1st down, his head jammed into Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin. With no doubt, he immediately demonstrated the fencer's pose. This is not a good outcome, when in 2022, he suffered 3 (not 2) significant concussions....................and he was debating whether to hang it up or not. I never thought that his return was a good idea.
