Jaguars’ Tyler Shatley knows about taxes and jet lag after seven games in London

Jaguars offensive lineman Tyler Shatley has played the most NFL games in London of any player ever. Tomorrow’s game against the Falcons will be his eighth, and next Sunday’s game against the Bills will be his ninth. And taxes and jet lag are two major complaints.

Shatley said players try to take sleeping aids before the team flight to London so they can sleep on the plane, but what they find is they’re just never going to adjust their body clocks properly.
“No matter what medicine you take or what you do, it’s going to stink and you’re going to be tired,” Shatley told ESPN. “And just embrace that. Embrace the stink because you’re not going to be able to make it. You’re not going to be able to adjust. Guys will stay up the night before so they can sleep on the plane and it never works. It hurts no matter, no matter what you try to do. . . . I haven’t heard of anybody being like ‘I found the golden ticket’ to not be just jet-lagged like a mug.”

Shatley also noted that the taxes in London mean his take home pay the next two weeks will be lower than it is the rest of the season.

“Percentage-wise [I’ve possibly paid the most in U.K. taxes],” Shatley said. “Obviously guys who make a lot more money and have had to pay more money, but I have had to pay more taxes to London.”

Those are two of the many issues that would arise if an NFL team ever made London its home. Shatley understands those issues better than anyone.
 
ESPN+ viewership from London game likely will be concealed, again

Last year, the Sunday morning (in the U.S.) game between the Broncos and Jaguars from London streamed exclusively on ESPN+. ESPN never disclosed the viewership numbers.
Instead, ESPN announced only that it was “the most-viewed event on the industry-leading streaming service,” with no further context and zero specifics.

This year, ESPN won’t commit to disclosing the viewership of Sunday morning’s game between the Falcons and Jaguars from London, which will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.

Presumably, if the numbers are dramatically better than expected, there will be a press release trumpeting the news. If they aren’t, there will be another vague statement that presents the information in the most favorable light, even if the information isn’t actually presented.

It’s not the first time it has happened with a London game involving the Jaguars. Six years ago, a Ravens-Jaguars game streamed exclusively on Yahoo, and the viewership numbers never were revealed.

I’m a proponent of transparency on all things involving the NFL. As the league pivots to streaming, how is it going? Are people watching? Are they not watching? The truth is the truth, regardless of whether it’s shared or buried. And if the number is low, it doesn’t change the fact that ESPN acquired the right to stream the game exclusively on ESPN+ as a way to get more people to embrace the new streaming reality.

For tomorrow’s game, ESPN and Disney have added a gimmick aimed at drawing in more viewers, with a Toy Story-based companion broadcast that transmogrifies the players into digital characters. Will that move the needle?

If it does, we’ll surely hear about it. If it doesn’t, we’ll simply be reminded that the ManningCast returns on Monday night for the Seahawks-Giants game.

All the reports were originally saying that Chubb was believed to have only suffered an MCL injury. I originally commented that it had to be a multiligament injury among other things.

As I find out, during surgery they confirmed and repaired a ruptured MCL, a ruptured medial capsule, a torn meniscus...................as well as the ligament I was sure was also ruptured...........the ACL [for this combination of injuries, definitely sustained a formal dislocation of his knee]. In a multiligament trauma, the ACL is commonly staged. In Chubb's case, the ACL repair will be addressed sometime in the next 2-3 months. Also undoubtedly, there has been significant articular damage................additional to the time he previously in 2015 sustained a serious multi-trauma to his knee............a dislocated knee, 3 torn ligaments (posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral and lateral collateral) and articular cartilage damage. The surgeon and team is now reporting that he will return for the 2024 season. If he is even able to return at all, which I believe is questionable, you will not be seeing the Nick Chubb you know. He'll likely also be looking at microfracture surgery.

Rotator cuff contusions are not really all that predictable. Gentle ROM (not throwing) rather than total rest actually helps avoid shoulder freezing. But activities that cause further trauma or bleeding into the tissues should be avoided. Healing for an overhead athlete can be anywhere from several days to several weeks. The injury causes significant pain and stiffness. Ice, steroid injections and anti-inflammatories can be used to treat it. Too early return to throwing or another hit the shoulder is likely to cause further damage. Derek Carr has a Grade II shoulder separation. Injection or not, he is not ready to return. His performance will be compromised, and if he sustains any more trauma to the shoulder, his subsequent recovery will be prolonged.
 
Another phantom call that lets the refs dictate a preferred Chiefs win. All these game-changing calls are becoming more and more common and are being much more difficult to set aside as "coincidental."

Sauce Gardner: I don’t even know what to say about late penalty

The Chiefs were able to run out the final 7:24 of a 23-20 win over the Jets on Sunday night thanks to some timely runs by Patrick Mahomes and a key defensive holding penalty on Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner.

Jets cornerback Michael Carter intercepted a Mahomes pass on third-and-20 from the Jets’ 40-yard-line with just over four minutes left to play, but the Chiefs got the ball back when Gardner was flagged for holding wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Replays showed what looked like the kind of incidental contact that goes uncalled on dozens of snaps in every game, but the penalty stood and the Jets offense would not get a chance to pull off the upset.

“The receiver ran into me, it was a collision,” Gardner said in his postgame press conference. “The same thing that was happening all game. They ain’t throw no flags. Pat threw the ball outside of the receiver, MC was there. He made the play and then the ref threw the flag. To me, personally, that’s like when you play basketball one-on-one and you go up to lay the ball up and you wait to see if you miss and then call the foul. I can’t believe that, that was just crazy. I don’t even think they threw the ball my way, at me, the first three quarters. And then they started throwing checkdowns, and the shot they take to get going, they get bailed out by that. Fourth quarter, crunch time, I don’t even know what to say.”

Jets head coach Robert Saleh declined to comment on the officiating after the game, but the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he got for berating those officials on the field after the final play of the game likely covered most of what he felt needed to be say about a very consequential call.

The last couple of years, with the Texans’ performance, I really haven’t watched NFLN. However, last week, I checked in on them for highlights and one of the host was getting his mustache shaved on live TV because the Falcons lost. Today, they were doing a Josh Allen bit and were tasting a Pepsi with hot sauce.

It seems they are spending more time on schtick and bits than football. Does anyone find their content entertaining?

I ain't paying 2 cents for NFL+ or NFLN or whatever it's called.

Although if CJ and DeMeco keep this up, I might reconsider. But I doubt it. I can find all the comment I need here, on this site.

But I do miss being able to watch some of those extra games that aren't normally broadcast.

Talk sports used to be all about sports discussion. Today you don't have to lool further that our own backyard.........where 790 and especially 610 at least half of the time are talking about barbecuing, nonsports celebrities, what they did on the weekend and other mostly noninteresting things. It apparently takes too much effort that they are not willing to put in to organize and plan out the reason most want to tune in to hear.

Guy radio. It's not recent. Just more pervasive. I was listening to one show, I don't know which, and somehow the topic switched to replying to graduation invites. It lasted 2 segments. And I listened just to see if any of the 3 or 4 guys talking would snap to "Hey, are we really on the air talking about graduation invites?" Aren't there producers that get shows back on course? I guess they think people want to listen to this crap?

I can’t stand John Lopez. He is the worse about it.
 
Patriots’ pass rusher Matthew Judonhas sustained a torn biceps..............a distal torn biceps. This injury (as opposed to a proximal biceps rupture) does not repond to conservative rehab. He will require surgical repair.

Always been partial to ESPN 97.5. They were in the toilet after the Blitz ended, but seem to be bouncing back with a lot of new (and some old) on-air talent.
 
Giants’ attempt at QB push play resulted in injuries to two players

One of the biggest problems with the quarterback push play comes from the risk of injury. Primarily to the quarterback.

But other injuries can happen. As the Giants learned the hard way on Monday night.

Via ESPN.com, the Giants suffered injuries to a pair of offensive players when attempting the play on Monday night against the Seahawks.

It happened in the first quarter, on the Giants’ opening drive. Fourth and one. It failed.

Both center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) and tight end Daniel Bellinger (knee) exited the game. They did not return.

“Yeah, both guys got hurt on that play,” coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

Like the team’s other home game, a promising opening drive ended in spectacular fashion with no points. And the opponent ran away with the game.

The end result? The Giants have lost a pair of home games by a combined score of 64-3. And they might have lost a pair of offensive players after attempting to run the play their division rivals in Philadelphia have worked to perfection.

ESPN doesn’t release audience numbers for ESPN+ game (again)

For the second straight year, ESPN+ had exclusive broadcast rights for an NFL game from London. For the second straight year, ESPN did not disclose the size of the audience for the London game.

Last year, ESPN didn’t disclose the viewership of Broncos-Jaguars from London. This year, ESPN didn’t disclose the viewership of Falcons-Jaguars from London.

Instead, buried in the release touting the viewership from Monday night’s game on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 was this declaration: “The Falcons-Jaguars traditional game presentation was the most-viewed event ever on ESPN+.”

That’s the same thing ESPN said after last year’s game. But without any numbers, it’s impossible to know what it means.

Bottom line? If they thought the numbers were good, we’d know what they are.

Josh Allen closing in on Steve Young for second-most rush TDs by a QB in NFL history

Bills quarterback Josh Allen scored the 40th rushing touchdown of his career in Sunday’s win over the Dolphins, and that moves him into some elite company in NFL history.

Allen is now tied with former Bills quarterback Jack Kemp for the third-most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback ever.

In second place on the quarterback rushing touchdowns list is Steve Young, with 43. Allen, who averages a rushing touchdown every other game over the course of his NFL career, should surpass Young some time around the Bills’ 12th game of this season.

But Allen will still be a long way from breaking the all-time NFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. That record belongs to Cam Newton, who scored 75 rushing touchdowns in his career. Allen is years away from threatening Newton’s record.

No other active quarterbacks are close to catching Allen. The active quarterback with the next-most rushing touchdowns, Aaron Rodgers, is certainly not going to catch him. After Rodgers, the active quarterback with the next-most rushing touchdowns is Jalen Hurts, with 29. The 25-year-old Hurts has a chance of eventually catching Newton, but he’s years away.

Lamar Jackson, with 28 rushing touchdowns, typically doesn’t run the ball in short-yardage goal-line situations, so he probably won’t catch Newton.

If Allen stays healthy, Newton’s record is within reach. For this year, passing Young for second place looks likely.
